Chairman Mao Braised Pork and Hunan Style Fried Noodles
Pascale S.

Got take out from here using pick up on Door dash. The food was pretty tasty and a good amount for the price! We got the hunan style fried noodles and chairman mao pork. I'd get the noodles again, but didn't love the pork. Pork was a bit too fatty for me and didn't seem to have a ton of flavor. Noodles were really good though. Overall would give this place another try.

Ambiance: a friendly modern hunan restaurant with lots of seating and a dim environment. Service: extremely attentive and fast. The food was brought out incredibly fast. Food: I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup with rice noodles. The soup was incredibly flavorful and spicy. The noodles were tender and chewy. Highly recommend

Really fresh and tasty! The price-to-food ratio is also decent in the current market. My favorites: -string beans -eggplant w/ string beans -bok choy My friend liked their ma po tofu, but she said that the numbing spice (not sure what it's called) was a little heavy. Just FYI...

The food was absolutely amazing. Honestly the best Chinese food I've ever had. The Hunan style lamb was very refreshing and the flavors were fantastic. The spicy beef noodles were not too spicy and were really flavorful and delicious. It all came out very quickly as well. I will 100% be back just for the food and I live over 4 hours away!

After ordering, the food delivered quickly , literally as the men ran to and from with the generous portions of foods. Food was tasty, savory and packed with flavors & heat! Great vibe, with excellent service! Excellent Eggplant & Beans, Lamb & Pork Hock.

I was in Davis and got hungry and looked for a restaurant I've never tried before. Found Hunan Style. Never heard or read about this place so coming in blind. Ordered the Hunan style sautéed beef and the Hunan style fried noodles with shrimp. First with the noodles, there is nothing special about it. It's like any chow mein I've had before. I do like the smoky flavor from the wok. My favorite is the sautéed beef. It was tender and flavorful and spicy. I think I requested medium spicy and it's okay for me. Had leftover that I brought home and my sister liked it too. Ordered takeout of Hunan spicy chicken and this one I do not recommend. I feel like there is not a lot of chicken in proportion to the dried chilies. Plus there were bones and the way it was coated one may think it's all chicken but when you bite into it you may crack a tooth. Service was good and the person who helped me made recommendations what to try when I mentioned I am coming back. Next time I will try the beef fried rice and the scrambled eggs and tomatoes. Other recommendations were organic chicken in spicy oil, sautéed pork enoki mushroom fungus and egg, country style dried bean curd with pork, sautéed eggplant with string beans, and sautéed baby bok choy pot. Spacious and a bit dim inside. If you like spicy and feeling adventurous try this place. Thank you.

Bones!!!!

This place is awful, plain and simple. I got the hunan spicy chicken, just awful. Dry, no sauce at all, worst of all?? It had bones in it. Not just one bone, more like, every piece of chicken either had a bone on it or cartilage. Gross. If this is traditional hunan, I'll stick with the frozen food aisle at trader joes. Ya feel me

If you like spicy food, you must go here! Always parking available which is helpful. A lot of people, so the service was a little slow. Great authentic Hunan style in Sacramento area. Really enjoy the large gallon size of water container at the table you get because you will feel the spice at some point. I recommend getting the eggplant with green beans ($14.95) since it very fresh, cooked nicely, not spicy at all. The spicy flounder fish ($24.95) is indeed SPICY, will numb your mouth but does go away, the sauce does contain a lot of veggie options such as bean sprouts, wood ear mushroom, king oysters which is worth it for portion size and ingredients in the meal. Dan Dan noodles ($12.95) were alright, just mixed in with diced pickled mustard greens. Overall, the food was spicy and fresh.

Griddle Cooked Organic Chicken with Peppers

Very spicy! Since it is pretty authentic Hunan cuisine, expect all their best dishes to be hot and numbing. Hunan spicy chicken: B+ Quite tasty, usually one of the popular human dishes here amongst the American palate. Tiny bites of chicken that aren't too spicy unless you also eat the peppers straight up. Boiled fish with chili: A- I always recommend this dish to people who haven't tried legit Hunan food before. Hunan style beef: B+ Tender beef, lots of cilantro. Really good over rice but was a bit spicy for me to handle. Griddle cooked chicken w/ Mexican peppers: B I think the Mexican peppers were jalapeno. This dish and some other chicken dishes have small bones attached which is common in China, I'm not quite a fan of the extra work it takes to eat and spit them out.

Friendly service, good food. This place is one of the two Hunan style Chinese food restaurants on campus, so it's quite popular, especially among Chinese students. The interior is bare minimum, tables and chairs, not much wall decor, so the food is the focus. The menu has a lot of authentic Hunan dishes. Hunan is a province in China that a little of their food is spicy, oily and heavy on taste. But you can ask them to be less oil and less salt. We ordered beef fried rice, pan fried egg with tomato soup, pork slices with mushrooms stir-fry, Mao's pork knuckles, and garlic bean sprouts. The fried rice has dark soy sauce but it's not spicy at all. The soup is very generous in portions and it has a huge piece of pan fried egg and some chopped tomatoes. The Mao's pork knuckles is good! Very soft and flavorful. The pork slices with mushrooms is a bit spicy although it's not visible. I was the least impressed with this dish. Service is good. We arrived ahead of our friend's schedule and they didn't rush us to make orders. Food also came out fast. I wouldn't say the price is super affordable for college kids, but the quality is good.

Sauteed Eggplant with String Beans

Came here twice in 2 weeks! Now my fav go-to spot for Chinese food in Davis! My favs are the cumin lamb, spicy fish soup, and pork & mushroom! Service is great and fast.

They offer reasonable prices for good food, and their specialty is spicy Asian dishes.

I love Davis creamery!…read more Since my freshman year, I have been going to Davis creamery! It is one of my favorite places to bring friends to, or show to people visiting Davis. I like that they choose to make their ice cream in store rather than buying it in bulk or ordering it from a factory. If you are looking for a quick ice cream treat, I would 100% reccommend checking this place out! Everyday of the week, they have some sort of deal or happy hour sale going on which is worth it to schedule into your day. They have many different flavors and toppings and they do allow sampling! For those who cannot have dairy, they also have dairy free options which is why this place is a go to for large groups or people new to Davis! There are options for everyone. One thing to note, they do not have seating inside and oftentimes they have long lines. But they do have seating right outside under street lights. On busy days, staff are alwasy working as fast as they can and they are always happy to help. The best way to avoid the lines? Go before meals or go earlier in the day :) after dinner is always the busiest time. In the spring, you can also submit a flavor you'd like them to make and if it makes it into the running, it will enter the month of bracketology where visitors try new flavors created and the favorite will be added to the menu for a while. If you are new or just stopping by, I would reccommend trying this place! If you find a flavor you really love, you can always take it home in a pint!

Student workers were nice and the place was super packed. Pretty normal ice cream place indoors with mostly outdoor seating. If you've never had bingsoo/bingsu before, it's a Korean milk-based shaved ice dessert. MandRo offers fruit bingsoo flavors, such as strawberry and mango, as well as non-fruit options, including chocolate, injeolmi, and matcha. If you're not feeling bingsoo, they also have different drinks on the menu you can order. While they don't have as large of a bingsoo selection as some other places I've been to, I've enjoyed all of their flavors I've tried so far. My favorite is the strawberry bingsoo, since the fruit pieces are fresh and pair well with the snow. They offer two bingsoo sizes (regular and large), and the regular is great for sharing between two to three people. You place your order on a kiosk near the counter, and the workers will let you know when it's ready. There is plenty of seating inside as well. I saw they have a new Dubai chocolate bingsoo, which I hope to try soon!

It's a bit of a drive from Sacramento due to the traffic because of the construction. It was worth the drive to try something new. I've never had this type of Taiwanese shaved ice before. At least I think it's Taiwanese. It was described as frozen milk shaved like shaved ice. It's very fluffy and not chunky like regularly snow cones you get at fairs and festivals. This shaved ices don't compare. I loved the texture of the shaved ice in our Mango Bingsoo(Regular). The shaved ice was covered with mangos and dressed with sweetened condensed milk. I wish there was a larger portion of the condensed milk to pour on top of the plain ice when you run out of mangos. The proportions mango to shaved ice was pretty spot on, though you could always use another layer or two of mangos. I just can't get enough mangos. Price- This was pretty pricy and I would say it's a special occasion type of place. In addition i Size- The regular was the perfect size to share with a friend. For two of us the large would have been too much. Restrooms- They have one unisex bathroom in back. Thankfully you don't need a code to go in. It was clean and well supplied. Entertainment- They have a bookshelf of games to entertain you and your friends as you enjoy your sweet treat. Parking- There is plenty of parking as they share a private lot with the shopping center. It's nothing like downtown Davis where parking is scarce and there is a time limit. Menu- they have a large menu, mostly of drinks. They have a smaller menu of desserts. They had several flavors of Bingsoo(Regular) including a seasonal peach, mango, and our friends got the one with red beans and rice cakes. I had a taste and it was really good also. Would I go back? Yes, for a special occasion.

It's cute that it's small but it also makes for a very awkward door opening. There was only one other small group, three people, inside and we almost felt like we had to wait outside in order to go in. But we didn't and we squeezed in and it just felt a little awkward and uncomfortable. We both wanted cones so we can walk and eat with one hand. He ordered the vanilla double scoop in the larger cone. It honestly just tasted like regular vanilla ice cream from the store. And the cone felt like a cheaper type of cone. I also wanted a cone, but I mostly wanted the cherry ice cream with a little bit of chocolate on top. This request was not fulfilled. She told me that it was by scoop and could not do that. I feel like there was a way to make this work... Like maybe the last scoop give me a smaller scoop of cherry to account for the little bit of chocolate I would want. But I was just met with a no and no other suggestion. I then followed up and asked if this could be done in the cup, which she said it could be so that's what I ended up getting. The cherry and dark chocolate flavor were both decent but honestly, they weren't the best gelato or cherry or dark chocolate flavor I've ever had. The dark chocolate wasn't dark in my opinion dark. Not to mention this was incredibly expensive. For both of us it was $20, and although he got the double scoop and I got the large it's honestly like a regular portion of gelato or ice cream. So yes, it's definitely on the pricier side and they're way cheaper options even in Davis. It's not bad, but it's not the best. I wasn't impressed by any means. And there can definitely be improvements. We might be back just because of the convenience of it, but it won't be a place that we seek out.

When we left Davis and came back, we were really sad that there were no more Taiwanese food options, because we both loved the pork chop and meat gravy over rice so much. That being said, when we realized, honey D was there, we figured we would try it. The store itself is quite small, think fast service Boba shop size. The decoration is fine, the place kept pretty clean, not much more to say about it. The service is also really good, the staff working was very polite and friendly, and it turns out the owner must've been in the shop because she delivered our food and asked us if we've ever eaten this food before and offered to help. We ordered the fried chicken with pork gravy over rice, the beef noodle soup, and the lemon tea. To be honest, the beef noodle soup is not my favorite. Although the meat looks like it was freshly cut, I found it to be quite tough. I also was not really a fan of the bra, but I know the broth is also up to personal taste. For myself personally, I think the one at Dah Bao is better, and I've had much better in the Bay Area and outside of the bay. That being said, we both really enjoyed the chicken and rice. It was such a nostalgic taste, and we felt like the serving size was great. The chicken itself was really crunchy, so I imagine their other fried chicken and popcorn chicken options are also delicious. The tea was also very refreshing and helped to wash the food down. We plan to come back and try more of their braised meat and rice dishes, despite being a little disappointed by the beef noodle soup.
