This is a decent Americana Chinese place! I'd call it fast-casual, but only if the service was fast. We waited about 25 mins for our food, so don't come too hungry. However, they did serve complimentary tea and the ambience was nice. The booths were comfy and the table was clean. I really liked the Beer Beef Shortrib Claypot with Japanese pumpkin! The meat was well-marinated and the kabocha (j pumpkin) had that lovely tender stew texture! My only critique would be to choose a different cut of beef. It was hard to eat since each piece had bone in it. The general chicken tastes more like an orange chicken. Not very spicy. The garlic bok choy was pretty standard. I think the fried rice was slightly bland, but I've had worse in Davis. The portions are definitely smaller here, but I personally prefer quality over quantity, especially with Chinese food. Delicious Cantonese food in Davis for a great value! Didn't expect that when my brother, a student in the area, told me about it. In comparison to the OC area, the prices at this place are better. Garlic Eggplant with Cod Filet in a clay pot was definitely my favorite dish. It was simple but the sauce/garlic enhanced the dish a ton. The eggplant for this dish is usually deep fried (which this place seemed to do) and was cooked just right. The fish was also fried and had a batter that wasn't too heavy. Be careful with ordering clay pot dishes though as it usually very hot. Beef Chow Fun was standard to what I've had at other canto places. Had some crisp bean sprouts and green onions to pair with the chow fun and beef slices. Braised tofu and veggie with black mushrooms is a great vegetable pick. The fried tofu, carrots, and mushroom is served on top of bok choy. There's a good amount of tofu included. Restaurant interior and restroom is clean. The service was great on both of my visits. Usually people complain about bad service at canto restaurants, but I didn't see any of that here. There is always something left over to take home. This time we did try a couple new dishes that we have never had (sautéed short ribs w/ honey pepper sauce and stir-fry fish filet w/ black bean sauce) and they did not disappoint! What I like most about their food is that they have strong flavors. Most of the dishes are pretty authentic Hong Kong Style. Service is mediocre, but it's like that at most Chinese restaurants. Choose your style of protein (chicken,beef, fish, shrimp) and style of cooking, accompanied with white rice ( like orange/broccoli/mongolian). Loved the chewy, slightly crunchy skin of the rectangular tofu which was in contrast to the soft inside. We also ordered regular braised tofu--the same tofu as that in my claypot--was good too, just w/o the salty part. We also ordered these sticky sweet salty wings that were tasty. Chairs stacked in a corner, people sitting at tables doing busy work, old Chinese guy in the back, the works. One guy at the register wasn't wearing his mask when we walked in, but put it on when we did. They handed us a menu and let us take our time ordering. The free lemon tea with Yelp check in was great, it tasted like the sweetened iced version of the hot tea you usually get at dim sum. The guy who took our order was very quiet but very quick. Our food was ready by the time we came back from a Starbucks run (15-20 minutes). We ordered orange chicken, BBQ pork chow mein, and beef chow fun. Everything was PIPING hot when we got home! Orange chicken was great! Nothing was soggy or under seasoned, 8/10. BBQ pork chow mein was alright, a little skimpy with the meat and a lot of veggies, 6/10. What a great accidental find! On 01/20/2019, my family and I were in Vacaville doing some shopping. Came dinnertime, our first two options didn't pan out because of long lines. I frantically searched Yelp and found Tasty Kitchen, a Chinese restaurant in Davis, that looked somewhat interesting. After scanning through a few reviews, I was very skeptical about their low rating, and decided to give this place a try. When we pulled up to the restaurant, it stood out like a beacon in the night because it was the only business open in that block of downtown. The quietness, cold temperature, and light drizzle created an eerie vibe. Perhaps the Gods were still weeping over the loss of Ofc. Natalie Corona of Davis PD, who was ambushed 10 days prior (R.I.P. sister). We walked in at around 6:35 pm. The inside of the restaurant was a complete opposite of the outside environment. It was noisy and packed with people, with several large parties waiting to be seated. Fortunately, a table opened up for us just when I was putting down my name on the wait list. I looked around after we sat down. The interior was spacious, brightly lit, and marginally clean. Decorations were minimal. There was a large TV near the cash register but the screen was frozen. The clientele was diverse. One of the staff brought us hot tea and menus. Their menu featured primarily Cantonese fare. After a few minutes of perusing, we ordered the following dishes: - Beef Stew and Tendon Clay Pot ($13.95) - Spicy Seafood Tofu Clay Pot ($12.95) - Braised Shiitake Mushrooms with Chinese Mustard Greens ($11.95) - Salt and Pepper Pork Chops ($10.95) - Hot Szechuan Chicken ($10.95) - Rice x3 (~$5) The beef stew clay pot was first up. The large chunks of beef and tendon were tender. The sauce was authentic Cantonese. The lettuce on the bottom took on the sauce very well and was an added bonus. The spicy seafood tofu clay pot was made with scallops, fresh squid, shrimp, and fried soft tofu. The ingredients were fresh and prepped well. The slightly spicy brown sauce was accented by the addition of dried shrimp, roasted garlic cloves, and fermented black beans. It was delicious. The vegetable dish was delightful. The Chinese mustard greens were very fresh and perfectly cooked. The shiitake mushrooms were meaty and added a nice earthiness to the dish. The right amount of sauce was applied so that the freshness of the ingredients could shine. The salt and pepper pork chops were excellent. They were meaty and the exterior was very crispy. The salt and pepper taste was intense but not overbearing. The chicken dish was not authentic Sichuan but nonetheless delicious. Thinly sliced chicken breast was stir-fried with two types of bell peppers, onions, and snap peas. It was slightly spicy and had great "wok hay" (breath of a wok), as evident by the light scorch marks on the vegetables. The chicken was very tender and moist. The portions were very generous. We ended up with a lot of leftovers. Service we received was excellent. The young staff was friendly and our requests were taken care of promptly. With T/T, the total was only $77 (I paid cash and received a 5% discount). We were very glad we gave this place a try. The food was absolutely fantastic and the pricing was very reasonable. My brother went to Davis in the late 90s and I remembered how bad the Chinese food scene was back then. He and his Chinese friends actually look forward to going home on the weekends just so they could eat some real Chinese food! How things have changed since then. The young Aggies these days are lucky to have a place like this. Spareribs were battered, deep fried, and wok tossed with in a sweet and sour sauce and pieces of pineapple, bell pepper, and onion. The sauce had a nice balance. The amount used was appropriate, just enough to coat the spareribs while maintaining their crunch. The spareribs were meaty but not over battered or greasy. Excellent! - Curry Beef Stew Clay Pot ($13.95): The beef and tendon chunks were very tender. The sauce was mildly spicy and very good. The beef pumpkin clay pot - meat weirdly tasted like TJ packaged short ribs, but the pumpkin was delicious Tomato beef chow mein + $2 for Hong Kong style - the Hong Kong style was worth it for the crispy noodles :) the tomato beef however was not tomato beef. Tasted like sweet and sour - like exactly like sweet and sour, I was disappointed and left craving sweet and sour chicken when I wanted tomato beef noodles. I wish the flavors melded more cohesively. The country style rice noodles sounded amazing: BBQ pork, duck, and shrimp cooked in the duck juices with bean sprouts and green onions. If the server hadn't told me the noodles were cooked in duck stock, I would not have been able to tell. Not much flavor. The restaurant itself is pretty big and can seat a decent amount of people. The hot & sour soup came out first. This was one of the worst dishes that we ordered in my opinion. It tasted like buffalo sauce that was turned into a soup. My table each had a bowl and that was it. The fish and eggplant clay pot came next and I can say this was one of the best. The fish is fried and is put into this sweet and sour sauce with eggplant that soaked up everything. It was literally so good and would be better with a bowl of rice! Next came the beef chow fun, nothing really special but it was still pretty good. The kung pao chicken was also really good, but a warning if you do not like spice or cannot handle spice, do not get this. The szechuan pepper is used for this dish so there is a numbing kick to it. Last, the chow mein came out and this was also nothing special, but it still satisfied us. The last time I came here it was Silver Dragon, which I still miss. We came in on a Friday during lunch hour. I had the lunch special-General Chicken. It came with steamed rice so I upgraded to egg fried rice. It was okay. I would've preferred my fried rice to be a little more fried but thought maybe this is their style.
