Went to J. Alexander's just last night. Nichole was our server, she was great. Arrived for our reservation time 5 minutes early. Waited an additional 10 minutes to be seated at the table that was open the whole time. Strike 1. Then was seated at the table, FIRST table when u walk into the bar. Strike 2. If we wanted to sit at the bar and bar area, we would have asked. We came there for less than bar like atmosphere, but ended up really being at a bar. Strike 3. Reservations should be specific....if the table is going to be a bar table tell us. We asked for another table and were told there were no others, though a party of 2 arrived right after we were seated. Food was good, not Michelin star by any means. Your NSO Mac and Cheese isn't all that. If u r making a 3 cheese dish, one should taste the 3 cheeses, NOT onion. So this review deviates from many others but we r no sheep. All the rave bout J's seems to be hype. And I will agree with another about wine glass prices. Extremely inflated. Beyond inflation price. Overall, I don't believe we received the value that we paid for. Again if we wanted to be at a bar, we would have went to one. Toledo has no shortage of those. Over priced 2 course meals. While the food tasted good the service and ambiance were not! I eat out 3-5 times in a week at a variety of places. This is the first time I have noticed puddles all over the table from our glasses . Sopping mess. The salt mill didn't work. There was very cold air blowing on us. And we were back against a waiter/waitress stand where I heard an entire conversation about a table of guest from a waitress . Besides all the talking and dish clanging behind me. (And breaking of dishes)There was customer at the bar yelling across the restaurant as well. So load it was difficult to hear the waitress or talk with one another. Waitress didn't bring our drink refills until we stopped her when she was walking by us. She also was not knowledgeable about the menu. I had not eaten here in at least a decade likely. We came in because Eddie Lee was out of prime rib and we were celebrating my parents anniversary and that is what they wanted to eat. We decided to dine out and chose this place because my husband was craving J Alexander's! We hadn't gone grocery shopping and it was later at night. We were seated in a booth right away by the bar and Jacob was our waiter. He did an excellent job of taking good care of us and not rushing us nor dragging it out! We ordered the famous spinach con queso for appetizer, it's always served hot and perfectly cheesy! I ordered the grilled chicken salad that comes tossed with black olives, feta, tortilla strips, and I hold the tomatoes. The chicken is perfect for any salad, thinly sliced, but big pieces and warm. It's tossed in a white wine vinaigrette, just the right amount. I can never eat it the whole plate so it stays fresh for my lunch the next day. My husband ordered the fish special which was Parmesan crusted hake, recommended by Jacob! It was an excellent choice and it was a generous portion! What makes J Alexander's stand out and us a repeat customer is their attention to detail and top notch service. No one I know does it better with their impeccable and seamless service from the moment you step in the door. The staff works hard at taking care of each customer by promptly waiting on you and timing out the serving of drinks, apps, and dinner. One of my favorite restaurants. The atmosphere and the service is on point. Try the salsa and chips as an appetizer you will not be disappointed. It's certainly not a as good as it gets" five-star, but I'm definitely a four-star fan. They seem to have a very large footprint throughout the States, but Toledo's is the first and the only location I've been to. I must have been to J.A's a handful of times already, but I was surprised I never reviewed them. J.A's is certainly not a place to go grab a quick bite if you're an average Joe like myself. Nor is it a once-a-year anniversary dinner place that you have to plan 6 months ahead and save up, either. Yes, you and your family of three will spend a cool buck and a half for a Sunday brunch if you happen to crave decent red meat or bbq ribs. But for the most part, you can get away with decently priced lunch specials at around $20 or $30. My coworker is a sucker for their steak salad, and I happen to love their fish sandwich with shoestring fries. In some ways, it reminds me a lot of another restaurant chain called Houston's out West. They also serve menu that round around the same price-range. They also serve shoestring fries and fall off-the-bone bbq ribs. And both establishments incidentally started in Nashville, TN, so I find out.. What's I personally find most impressive about J.A's is the consistency of food quality and service they offer. Of the 5 or 6 times I've been already, I've never been disappointed with either the food or the service. Regardless of whether I'm there for a company lunch or a family dinner, I've always found the food to be just right, and the service to be very prompt. The only small complaint I have, which is no fault of their own, is that sometimes their clientele can be a bit of a downer. I'd like to blame it on the affordability of their menu in that you sometimes run into people with a bit less class who will have very little regard to their surroundings. I'm talking about people who can't keep their voices down nor control their swearing whilst talking. I admit that I'm especially more sensitive about this since I usually dine out with my little one. And I admit, it's not like I haven't been "that dude" who can't keep his voice down at times either. But I'd like to think I pick a time and place to be rowdy. Maybe it's a wrongful impression or expectation I have of J.A's that it *should* only attract people with slightly more class, when I know damned well that's just not the reality or the people, nor the need for restaurants to not discriminate.. I personally wouldn't classify them as a "steak house," even though they offer decent selection of steaks. There certainly are a few other steak houses I prefer to go if I'm craving a very good slab of Delmonico cut. (Local people will know exactly what I'm talking about) But for anything else from fresh Caesar salads to steak sandwich to baby back ribs, I'm totally okay with J.A's. I continue to keep J.A's as an option for semi-casual dining, and I don't see them failing me any time soon. The day they fail me will be the next time I write about them, I guess.. read more

It's sad to say this establishment is really going downhill. Since covid every time we go all the prices go up by one dollar. Some items are $5-$10 more than before covid. Normally this is my husband and I's favorite restaurant for special occasions and we've never been disappointed up until today. The food was still excellent but the service was terrible. We went in at 7 on a Wednesday and they weren't busy at all which we thought would work to our benefit. However, our server was less than personable or attentive and she actually was never the one to deliver any of our food - she sent it out with other servers. The pop was flat and even so, my husband's drink went empty and sat empty several times. We felt rushed to make a decision while ordering and she took away the wine menu from my hands as I was looking it over. We were actually there to celebrate my birthday and also a promotion... so an enthusiastic server and great service would have made the day absolutely perfect but when we told her we'd like a piece of pie for my birthday, she just trudged off without even saying "Oh it's your birthday? Happy birthday!" Or anything of the nature and she sent someone else out with the dessert. She didn't thank us for coming in or ask us how our meal was, nothing... normally we can't get over how amazing the service is so we were kind of thrown off. She could have been having a rough night, or, perhaps she thought because we aren't the normal age of most of their patrons, that we wouldn't tip well? We always tip over 20% there because we expect to given great food and service... but tonight because of our service, she only earned 15% and got herself the tip she probably assumed we would leave anyways. I had the filet mignon and I asked for medium but it came out without any pink. I swapped my baked potato for my boyfriend's mac and cheese which was good on my part- he said the baked potato was cold and tasted like it was barely heated up. My dad took care of the bill which was nearly $400, so for that reason I feel as if the food could have been prepared a little better. It's a pretty expensive restaurant which is fine, you just expect a little bit better of an experience than the one we had that day. Warning- long wait on weekends (like an hour or longer) and super expensive meals but it is delicious. Before at a previous visit I had an issue with the service, and the staff saying a certain item was on the menu (they mixed it up and didn't tell us it wasn't available until 20 minutes after we ordered)... this time I called ahead of time to make sure that item was available because it's the only WOW item I've ever gotten there before so it's the only excuse I have found to be dropping $30-40 on a single plate of food. Although that is still SUPER expensive it's a nice dining experience if you get the right server who knows what she's doing I've heard great things about the carrot cake but I also haven't tried it - instead I tried the chocolate cake and it is good but the food is already so filling I rarely need dessert. The chocolate cake is good BUT it sounds crazy I just prefer Chili's molten lava cake. (Cheaper, more rich, and perfect balance of chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream with that awesome hard shell on top) For special occasions - or a treat yourself moment - J Alexander's fits the bill, but definitely be prepared for that bill. read more

Fantastic evening for the most part. Drinks at the bar while we waited were expertly crafted, the gin martini was exactly what the doctor order. Our table, despite being in the middle of the restaurant offered plenty of space and there was minimal traffic from other patrons. We were assisted by a triumvirate of wait staff. Kyle was our primary server, he was an absolute gentleman and made a perfect pair with Jayden who kept our drinks topped off all night. It did feel a bit like Zac was still in training despite his claim of being involved for 6 months. He just watched while Kyle and Jayden orchestrated a perfect evening. I hope the best for those two in their future. It's amazing when 2 people can lift an evening like they did. Even if the food wasn't amazing (which it was) they were worth the visit. Today my friend and I had dinner at J. Alexander. When we walked in we where promptly greatest by the hostess, and informed of the 10 minute wait! (10 minutes?? That's it??? WINNING!!!). We saw a few.open seats at the bar, so decided to just go ahead and dine at the bar. Maddie was our server tonight , and she was phenomenal. She took the time to personalize our visit today. She took the time to fully answer all of our questions, as well as tell us her.personal favorites. It was evident that Maddie genuinely enjoys her job. Despite the restaurant being it's typical busy environment, she took the time to listen to our tales of our lives and our career's. Never once did she appear to be annoyed or seem as If we where an inconvenience to her night. She never rushed my friend while he was.on story telling mode. Our food came out and was cooked to perfection. (Hats off too the chef) As well as delivered in a timely fashion. Not to mention was absolutely delicious. Went there this past Sunday for dinner. I was really disappointed overall. I had a lot of people recommend that I go, and even dish recommendations. The chicken soup was great, carrot cake also excellent, everything else was a let down. The person I went with orderd filet mignon with brocolli, I ordered prime rib with orzo and wild rice. The sides were fine, but her steak was overdone and was extremely bland. My prime rib was okay, but extremely fatty. Would have sent both back, but we had already waited over an hour for our meal at that point and had plans for after dinner and we were already pushing that time. We arrived at 430pm, were seated immediately and didn't leave until 655pm. We ordered a dessert to go, and they did cover that for us as compensation, which was appreciated. I was just really disappointed with the experience. The server was weird, kept staring and lingering without doing much. We had to ask for water refills twice before someone came by to fill water, but with the waiting for food that long, it makes waiting for water much more frustrating. We each ate less than 1/3 of what was on our plates and he never asked how our meal was. The manager came by, not by request, and asked and we were able to share our thoughts, but overall, just a really poor experience. I'll have to try them back another time, but it will be a long long time until I do. read more

Having said that, I would definitely recommend it for just that- business. Maybe it changes at night, but hey, I can't speak to that. We ordered the queso and spinach dip for an app- it was delicious!! So cheesy. For my entree I had the Maui steak. If you've ever been to Houston's restaurant, it tastes just like their Hawaiian ribeye. It was cooked to a perfect medium and I ate every bite!! For my sides I had steamed broccoli and the kale salad. Broccoli was nothing to write home about but the kale salad was one of the best I've had!! Others at the table had the cilantro shrimp (huge portion and very tasty) and the rotisserie chicken. Both of which were good. Don't skip out on this place for lunch!! read more

Disappointing experience tonight. I mean this in all honesty - this place is starting to slip. Someone needs to catch it before it dives into a free fall. I have loved this place for years. So what is wrong? The restaurant appears to be cutting items from the menu and making sub standard replacements. Maybe I'm just unlucky and only my favorite things were targeted, but here's what we noticed just tonight was missing: The Kobe beef burger is gone The deviled eggs are gone The AMAZING salsa that came with the queso dip (I used to buy bottles of it off the restaurant) has been replaced with a really mediocre pico de gallo ALL craft beer (maybe even all beer) is gone The cheesecake is gone The seasonal specials menu is gone (though a couple items from it are now on the permanent menu) In addition, the meals our table received did not seem like the same quality as in the past: The salads had less cheese The new York strip was fairly bland The Cole slaw was dry And the Manhattan Martini we ordered was absolutely horrible - almost unpalatable This was a birthday visit by the way, so this was all rather disappointing. And it's part of a trend that seems to have started in late 2019 or early 2020. The rattlesnake pasta has been undercooked on a couple of occasions during that time, for example, and the menu changes started around then. I don't know if the restaurant is making cutbacks due to a rough covid year, but this place used to be the best in town. The warm carrot cake is all the reason to eat here! A friend and I were dining here for dinner. The intimate ambiance of the restaurant was very calming and quiet. We were greeted and seated immediately. Everything is pristine from the tables to the layout. It is very inviting. Our service here was excellent. Brandi did an outstanding job throughout the evening. She was very attentive and friendly. We started off with the Spinach con Queso. A huge bowl was delivered to the table with a basket of chips. This was wonderful. Very creamy and cheesy. The flavor was great. Of course we didn't leave any in the dish! For my meal I chose the Country Club with the loaded baked potato. Huge sandwich... huge potato. The sandwich was delicately toasted. It was piled with meat and toppings perfectly. i would definitely order this again. The baked potato was delicious with it's loaded goodness of cheese, bacon and sour cream. For the cherry on top, my friend convinced me to order their carrot cake. She had eaten one prior and said it was the best she'd ever had. Well, I would have to agree. The huge piece of cake was easily split between us. It was warm and perfect. The food was good, but not orgasmic. My steak was ordered Medium Well and cooked Well. Not too big of a deal. The $12 Two-Swallow Martini was a Ripoff; tantamount to a sexual assault on my wallet. I have paid $10 for mixed drinks and martinis in Ann Arbor before at several venues and they were MAN Drinks... not sissy. two swallow drinks. Mike P suggested that Angelos Northwood Villa in Erie may be a better bet when it comes to Priime Rib. I say that it would have been a better bet and worth the drive on several levels. I liked my meal here "ok" and my check was $87 for two... pre tip. HOWEVER, I have had orgasmic meals at Angelos, more drinks, stronger man drinks, bigger portions, my fav liquor in stock (Yukon Jack) , and a general feel good about it...... for $92 pre tip for two. In conclusion: Many other places to go to for a more satisfying feeling after a $100 + post tip dining check. And the $12 two swallow Martini is insult enough to keep me away. read more
