I ask my father-in-law where I can take him for dinner. His answer "I can do steak." No problem, except I'm visiting from SoCal and don't know anything about Toledo area Ohio. I look up a couple places and took a chance on J. Alexander's. We're dressed causal but go in to be greeted by 3 hostesses in all black dresses and pearls. We felt totally underdressed after looking at the dimmed but elegant space. But-- most people were dressed casual as we were. Laura was our waitress and got us started with a couple Porter beers and the Spinach con Queso appetizer which was great. Entrees come with a house or Caesar salad. The salads were big and made me not want to eat it all to save room for my NY Strip. Well that didn't happen. A simply Caesar but a very tasty one, so I ate it all. My steak was great. My Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese side was not. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the taste was simply not good. Almost had a kind of sweet aspect to it. I had about a quarter of it and left the rest. The service was EXCELLENT. Laura came by a few times and was extremely efficient. More importantly - I think we had about. 5-6 different servers who brought us out different things. (Water, salad, appetizers) So I was almost expecting the lack of continuity with the servers to lead to something getting messed up. It didn't happen. Great job. Very pleased. Hands down the best steak I had so far in Toledo. It's right behind Ruth's Chris in quality when it comes to steak. Ordered myself a New York Strip that comes with a side of yummy Caesar salad and their AMAZING Not Your Ordinary(NYO) mac n cheese. The steak was perfect! It was thick and juicy. It's one of those steaks you don't need A1 or any other sauce to eat it with. As for the mac n cheese, a friend recommended it and it blew my mind away on how good it was. I'm usually the guy who stay aways from mac n cheese but theirs got me wanting it more and more. This place is definitely one of the nicer ones in town. It's elegant and the cost is a bit more than your average joe. In the end, you'll end up spending more but the service you'll get is outstanding and the food is freaking delicious so you'll get your money's worth. I will be back. read more

I've been going there since it opened but never again! The cooks did not have mask on and were eating while cooking and setting the plates to be delivered. Waiter was totally untrained. It took him 15 minutes to get to our table. Ordered drinks and that was another 15 minutes to get. Ordered our food for dine in and it came out as to go. When I mentioned it to another waiter he initially suggested that we just eat it out of the to go box then offered to get plates. When our waiter stopped by he blamed the kitchen even though you could clearly see on the receipt the order was rang in as a to go. He did try to make it right by offering a dessert but after 20 minutes of being ignored we left. Looked for a manager as we were leaving but none were around. This is my third visit in three different states. It seems I am a fan of this large Corporate chain. I've had the steak and frites, roasted chicken, fish sandwich, Caesar salad, deviled eggs, and carrot cake desert. Each location prepared each item to the corporate standards. Especially good were the deviled eggs. Drinks are a good pour and wine selection by the glass were plentiful. Service is attentive. The restrooms are well tended to, thanks for that. I have been coming to this place for over 20 years. I really hate to give this review, but hopefully things change....I will go back, but not anytime soon. First I know there is inflation, but prices have risen on the food to a level I am not quite comfortable with yet...other restaurants in the area have not raised their prices as much as "J" has recently. As for our experience, our server was new to serving and drink service was slow. We received drink before the salads arrived, one after the salads arrived, and another after we were done with the salads. I looked over at the bar and there were only a few patrons at the bar with 2 bartenders so I am not sure what the excuse was.... As for the food, I love their cilantro shrimp, Cajun chicken(rattlesnake) pasta, and Maui steak. Tonight's meal just didnt live up to the standards. The steak was cut thinner than I am used to and it tasted like they didn't clean the wood fire grill very well from what they were cooking before my steak went on. The mac and cheese was good, but the coleslaw(which we usually love) was almost inedible. Maybe it is just a bad night, or maybe they cant find anyone that wants to make money....not sure? read more

We had waited for a while and made our way to the bar. After waiting at the bar and ordering drinks we stood off to the side and a gentleman eventually made his way to the bar and asked for another chair for his wife. The bartender told them they don't have any other chairs but they decided to stay and order food. Another couple was leaving and gave us their chairs since WE had been standing waiting longer than this guy coming up and popping up there to get a seat. Maddison who was the bartender made it known that we were "rude" for not giving the chairs to the guy who basically was just trying to cut the dinner line and to sit at the bar and eat even tho we checked in way before them. It will be a very long time before we go back. Her behavior was very childish. When my husband got up to get our table she started to eye the customer to tell him there was a free bar chair. I plan on calling corporate Monday, more training needs to be done on her part. I'm assuming the way she acted that she knew the people but it was sickening how she made her comments and behaved. read more

The food is excellent, but ordering takeout is a hassle. We ordered for our office and gave our office phone number. They apparently need a cell phone for the pickup, the staff never told us this. We wanted to pay over the phone but after 10mins of explaining this we were told we couldn't do this but could pay with the text on our order. It took us 25min to get this al straighten out. Great atmosphere, great service , great waiter. My nephew and I each ordered the prime rib. His was cooked to perfection and mine was uneatable. Just a bad cut poorly cooked. Our waiter was a real pro and apologized and the manager removed it from our bill. Nephews was perfect in every way so go figure. Everything else was first class. I have eaten in many of the J Alexanders throughout Ohio and never had an issue so I'm sure this was just an unfortunate odd incident. I would eat here again. Normally have a very good experience at this restaurant, but tonight was off. I ordered dessert to go and waited 50 minutes after paying before I finally got it. No one stopped by to tell me that there was going to be a wait. I asked about how long it would take and was told that they were making fresh carrot cake. 30 minutes later I asked again and the manager said he would come to my table. The manager did not come but someone brought out the carrot cake, but didn't acknowledge the wait or apologize. I'm very disappointed that no one ever explained the situation or apologized for the wait. read more

Update below....I have not been to J. Alexander's in years. They have removed the warm delicious croissants and replaced them with nothing. My daughter had a French dip and the prime rib was delicious. It melted in your mouth. The french fries were appropriately seasoned. My Alex salad arrived first and it looked like a piece of art! The even took the time to arrange the warm croutons around the outside of the salad. After the salad the Hyde Park chicken sandwich arrived with a hair, mayonnaise and an onion on it. The menu stated it would have lettuce and tomato. The bill arrived WITHOUT a discount. The service was horrible. Many times I needed to take a drink from my daughter's pop. I won't be back. Update...the management gave me a $15 Be My Guest coupon to return and I did. To be fair I ordered the Hyde Park, the same way. The sandwich again arrived with mayo. I asked for a manager and it was quickly fixed. The sandwich was moist and delicious. The fried were perfectly seasoned. The waitress was a complete turn around from the one I had before! Rare visit to a spot across town from me on a Friday night. We went a little early and had no wait. But they were already busy in a good way. Lots of guests, but everything was running well. Busy but calm. It reminded me of when all nice restaurants were staffed by experienced, professional staff. The service was the standout on this visit. It was on point, pure and simple. A half dozen different people interacted with us in some way, because the concept is that everybody helps. It ended up like clockwork in my case, and the impressive service was reflected in an impressive tip. Price points are just under top tier steak restaurants. Just above other chains. Think $50 for a steak, $20-30 for other entree selections and $15 for a cocktail as of summer 2022. Salads, etc ala carte. Speaking of salads, the "Alex's salad" was fresh and well-presented but lacked a couple promised ingredients, like bacon. Large portion, as is the Ceasar, which was a little bland but also fresh. The lettuce was more iceberg than romaine, which is a Ceasar sin. Lacked parm. Croutons were interesting and sparse. Flavorful but chewy rather than crunchy. Couldn't really finish it all. Opted for the prime rib, a signature entree. It was excellent, well prepared, and well portioned. (Went with 16 oz cut, 12 and 20 are available.) Creamy horseradish is provided, and in my case, the combination of the creamy horseradish, prime rib and smashed potatoes provided a moment of sublime and ethereal prime rib perfection. I could have lived in that bite for the rest of my life. Au jus was a little weak. But the potatoes (they sound easy to make but are hard to make and hold) were so good (like the top mash potatoes I recall in many years) they more than made up for it. A carry-out carrot cake was ok. Like the salad, passable but underwhelming compared to the entree. Bottom line: I would call this spot a very safe choice for a good meal in 2022, and a standout great service experience. Plan for a shot wait during busy periods. But they can handle being busy, no problem. The staffed seemed to like it busy, and like what they do. Instead of feeling too busy or stressful, it just felt like the place had life in it. read more

I have been trying to get take out a few times a week to help restaurants during the closures of the coronavirus. I did take out a few weeks ago for Jalexanders. The messed up my order and put mayo on when I asked no mayo. I had to throw the bun away. I thought I would give them another chance. I called to day from work, and when asked for a take out order I was told we open at 12pm. I asked if I could leave my order as I would pick up at noon. She replied well I'm getting this set up. I can't decide if I would give this place a 3 or 4 stars. But I went with 4 because I do find myself here every so often when i Don't know what else to eat. I've been coming to j. Alex for a long long time. And I used to love it back then. But more so within the last few years it's been a hit or miss. Some days it's good and some days it's just ok. When it's good. They are good. My strip steak gets cooked the perfect medium rare, more on the rare side is how I like it. The NYO Mac and cheese is spot on. Their loaded smashed potatoes is phenomenal. But when they are off, they are off. The last few times it was either I had to send my steak back because it was medium well, and I just can't get myself to stomach dry meat. And/or the food is really greasy and doesn't sit well. Their cypress salad is bomb. And I love it with extra cornbread croutons and their honey mustard and champagne vinaigrette dressing is delish!!! Tried this place off of several recommendations we received. The atmosphere is very nice and classy with a great vibe as soon as you walk in. The staff is very knowledgeable and polite. The spinach queso is an absolute must have as an appetizer. I had an excellent ribeye called the Steak Maui and was cooked perfectly. My mother had the New York strip that was cook to perfection as well with broccoli that was really good. Our little man had the steak burger and he loved it. The Caesar salad is very good which is a must for me at any good steakhouse. My wife had the Steak Maui and loaded baked potato which I think could have used more loaded toppings but steak was perfect. The only room for improvement is the "not your average Mac n cheese" that might be as good as proclaimed if they took out the onions and mayo or miracle whip twang. The drinks were made perfectly which was nice. All and all this place was great and we will return. The only reason for 4 star and not 5 was the Mac n cheese. read more
