He's been coming here since he was a kid and he said it's gotten more and more casual dining as the years go on but we still very much enjoy it! Their steaks are all great. Prime rib is perfect! I enjoy their crab cakes and their pizzas. The salads are fantastic but no salad is worth $20 in my opinion. Glad we stopped in here on a brisk Tennessee day-such a great place! I started with the spicy margarita which was perfect and definitely spicy. It was perfect! They take reservations, which I really appreciate these days. Seated quickly. Dorian took care of us and did an outstanding job. Our glasses never got close to being empty before they were refilled. I ordered the chicken fingers that came with "straw" fries and coleslaw. Large proportion sizes. Served hot and came with bbq and honey mustard sauces. Absolutely delicious. 2.18.24 The visit at this location was a disaster! The restaurant was extremely busy. Usually, that's a good sign. The young waitress, her name escapes me stopped by to introduce herself and get our drink order. Several minutes passed before she came back. We would have offered an appetizer but it didn't appear she was making regular rounds. We placed our order. The salads came out fairly quick. A huge plus, since we were hungry. I ordered a Fliet with a loaded potato, my usual goto when visiting J.A. The entrees were delivered, I however didn't get a steak knife. Had to wait several more minutes to ask for one. While waiting, I tried the potato. It wasn't hot. I sent it back and another was brought out. It wasn't hot either! A manager, I believe his name was Brian came by and asked if he could make another for me, I refused. Not sure how you could mess up something so simple! Not sure who eats cold potatoes, I don't! He stated that he would take care of it. Not sure what "it" was; the bill was still over $100 for a meal that I didn't eat. The 2 stars are for the salad. Server was affable and knowledgeable, even given the busy nature of things. I had the Caesar to open the meal, it was very good. Chose the Hyde Park for my main dish, a chicken sandwich with Monterey Jack cheese, came with their fries, which are the thinly sliced variety (my personal favorites). The Hummingbird (Jalapeno / Basil) martini is one of my favorite drinks, and they give you an extra sidecar so you can refill when you start running low. On my first visit to Tennessee, my buddy & I were taken here by our friend who lives in Franklin. This is a big, BIG restaurant done in modern steakhouse decor. I ordered the Filet with a fully-loaded Baked Potato and was NOT disappointed. I also ordered a Confidential cocktail, and I think it threw me for a loop later on. ;-) For dessert we all shared a massive slice of ice cream cake. Ive been here a few times..... I wish I could give this place a better rating. Food was great, and service was great. That's all that's needed right? There is one REALLY big problem. The smell. It's either the floors in the kitchen, or the grease trap needs to be thoroughly cleaned, or completely replaced. It's a pungent smell, and the reason I don't go more often. Especially if you are seated closer to the kitchen. My guess, is the orange tile floor in the kitchen, is just completely saturated in grease, and needs to be replaced. Walked in on a Tuesday night and was immediately seated. Amanda was our server and she deserves a raise! I ordered the Steak Maui and my wife ordered the house special Tuscan Steak. I was bit disappointed when I received the steak Bc it was well done (ordered medium well)...fortunately, the Tuscan steak came medium-medium well and my wife preferred well done. We just switched plates and made the most of our anniversary celebration. Really great neighborhood restaurant. Menu had a very wide variety and completely consistent good food. Menu ranges from Burgers, Creative Salads, Pizza to American Flare Entrees. Portions are large and service is very good as well. Drink menu including cocktails, wine and beer all have a good deal of variety and price points. I had lunch at J. Alexander's on Monday, February 1, 2021 on a snowy afternoon. This restaurant looked very busy as expected during peak lunch hour. Surprisingly, my party of 3 was seated within minutes, but we were disappointedly led through the dining area to a booth area that was packed with other people, only to find out that there weren't really enforcing limited capacity. interestingly, there was even a sign on the door saying something about limited capacity. Entrees: The grilled pork tenderloin was cooked well - tender, moist, and seasoned. The Thai 'bang bang' sauce was sweet and thought it paired well with the tenderloin; however, I just wished they didn't put too much of it on the plate so that the tenderloin was swimming in it. The mac and cheese I substituted the mashed potatoes for tasted pretty good for a quick mac and cheese. The steak in the Steak 'n' fries' was also cooked well and nicely seasoned. The orzo and wild rice was dry and bland, unfortunately. The baby back ribs were also very good; meat was tender and fell off the bone easily. Service was pretty good for a busy lunch hour. I would avoid this restaurant if you're looking for a restaurant that enforces social distancing and limited capacity. This restaurant just looked like COVID didn't exist at all... However, the food and service was pretty good, so I would stick with ordering to go for pick up. read more

So I was pretty bummed. I was looking forward to trying J Alexander's because, being here for 12 years, I have heard a lot about it. We finally made it a point to go last night for a date night and I really never thought anyone could mess up a filet. I was wrong, and very surprised. I asked for medium, it was a pretty thick steak, but it came out very raw in the middle. I asked them to please give it some more time and they ended up charring the outside of it so badly that the entire steak just tasted like I was eating coal straight off of a fire pit. Because our food had taken so long to come out already, I didn't want to ask them to make me a new one so I attempted to cut off some of the chardred pieces and drench it in béarnaise. That didn't work. My mouth tasted like an ashtray and the meat was so hard and even crunchy that it reminded me of the scene from Christmas Vacation when they overcook the turkey and have to try to dip it in water to even be able to chew it. Sadly, this was one of the worst meals I have had in my life. Service was good, atmosphere was good... but I would have thought one of the managers who checked would have noticed the steak was burnt beyond making it palatable. To add to this, how come every negative review is replied to in the same way? "Thanks for helping us figure out fine dining and how to cook a meal". Why would anyone want to spend $150 on a meal to help you figure out how to run a fine dining establishment? A lot of work in customer service needs to be done as well I guess? read more

Good martini and wine list. Only two draft beers, both happily local, and both pilsners. Preferred the Belle Meade to the Fat Bottom, the Fat Bottom was just too hoppy for my taste. Chose the daily special salmon dip as a shared starter. Chopped hot smoked salmon, lots of red onion, crunchy bread chips. It was fine, clearly freshly prepared and nicely plated. Just personally not my favorite, probably wouldn't order again. Split an Alex's Salad between us. We got two, still quite large, separately plated salads, very cold, very fresh, really crisp and delicious. For dressing, we both chose homey mustard, which was very good, a little pool put under the finishing salad toppings. Kudos for an excellent salad, nicely plated. Had the BBQ chicken and the Italian meats pizzas. They have a rocking pizza oven, these were clearly quickly cooked in a very hot oven. Some black char on the edges, excellent crust, toppings a bit floppy and greasy in the middle, as suits the style they're going for. Stuffed our faces and happily boxed the remains for the next day's lunch. Vibe is dark, a bit loud, upscale, really reminded us of a favorite Austin restaurant, Bartletts. Based on this first visit, I eyed a number of other dishes that I really want to try and am confident would be well executed and delicious as well, from a French dip to Mr Jack's crispy chicken, so we'll definitely be returning regularly. It's a chain, but it's executing at a high level, cares about quality and service, and is well worth a visit. read more
