We found this restaurant thanks to Yelp. We were seated right away. Menu and tea were dropped off shortly afterwards. The menu offered an extensive selection and it was difficult to decide. We ended up ordering assorted sashimi, aburi combo, tonkotsu ramen, seared amaebi nigiri and tuna toro nigiri. The kitchen was fast at making our order. The sashimi was fresh. The aburi sushi were all made well although I found it to be a tad sauce heavy. The ramen was alright. The broth could be more flavourful. There was a decent amount of noodles and the pork was flavourful. I enjoyed the potato croquette. It was freshly fried and tasty. Service was great. I came here for dinner recently. The restaurant had a relaxing atmosphere and service was good. In terms of food, I tried their Spicy Chirashi Don. The Chirashi had Salmon, Tuna, Snapper, Tamago, Masago, Tako (Octopus), Ebi (Shrimp), and salad with various vegetables. All the sashimi were quite fresh and the octopus was the best as it was soft but still had a bit of a crunch. The sweet spicy sauce really completed the dish. This Korean-operated Japanese restaurant is located in the Sullivan Square Shopping Centre. Their menu is extensive but I ended up ordering all sushi. I order 4 rolls for takeout which came out to almost $40 (they give 10% off for cash payments). I've tried their lunch bento boxes before and I think those were more delicious compared to the 4 rolls. I personally found the rolls too saucy and soggy. The yam tempura in the yam tempura roll was not crunchy and the chicken in the chicken teriyaki roll was overcooked. The special mango roll I ordered was overly sweet from the mango sauce and wasn't very appetizing. Another special roll I ordered was topped with loads of dried onion which were unfortunately soggy. I ordered takeout but service was decent. They were able to accommodate my request for mayo on the side though I wish they ask customers if they would like bags before charging $0.40 for the takeout paper bag. My daughter and I just finished our meal- caterpillar roll and one of the no rice specialty sushi rolls (forgot the name) and both were yummy! Miso soup and the Karaage appetizer (squid) were tasty. My daughter had the Taiyaki ice cream for dessert, she usually gets the mochi but tried this for the first time. Great homemade mango sauce on the side and went well with the ice cream/wafer. She wanted to order seconds lol. In the past we've ordered both the assorted and deluxe sashimi which are always fresh and delicious, and have enjoyed other dishes like the tempura, teriyaki beef and chicken katsu. A delicious sushi restaurant that has great quality, fresh fish, an aesthetically pleasing interior, and reasonable prices...in Surrey? The outside was very unassuming, as it looks like a standalone generic building in the middle of a strip mall. Once you come inside, it's a completely different story. There is lots of great looking traditional Japanese decor, and tons of open space - featuring several dark wooden tables and booths, wooden floors, and dark walls. I quickly and randomly picked this place cuz it was so close by, and arrived with a large group with no reservations...and to my pleasant surprise, they went out of their way to be super accommodating and friendly. We even kept on ordering more food, because everything tasted so delicious! The sushi was so beautifully presented and very fresh, they don't skimp on their portions and they have so many options (their menu is HUGE). They have everything: appetizers, sushi rolls, sashimi, nigiri, aburi sushi, rice bowls, curry...and even ramen! Since we ordered so much, they also gave us complimentary mochi ice cream to finish off our meals! They are surprisingly quite comparable to other mid-range restaurants found in Vancouver, but in terms of how they rank to other sushi restaurants in the area, they definitely stand well above their competitors. This is definitely where you want to go to eat sushi if you're in Surrey, and more people need to give them a try. Okay, true Japanese food is hard to find in the suburbs but the next closest thing is Korean-Japanese places like Isshin! I'm so happy I decided to stop in for a lunch break. I ordered a udon bento, which came as a veritable feast! I was so surprised how much food it came with...and this is one order! I did also get a Philadelphia Roll because....I was hungry and I wanted a smoked salmon typa roll! The udon wasn't all that interesting (i prefer mine with more broth) but the tempura....oh, the tempura...! The perfect selection with sweet potato, eggplant and prawns. The coating was piping hot and extra crispy but the batter wasn't thick. It was so......so........good! And the philly roll is the nicest I've had in a long while! Overall, I was very satisfied with my meal. What really pushed this to next level greatness was the takeout packaging! No Styrofoam here; cardboard boxes, including a cup-shaped one that allowed for an open top so the tempura doesn't get soggy as fast! Pleasantly surprised. Recently visited this newly renovated sushi place for lunch and although I didn't expect much, I really liked the food and it was fulfilling. I went with the Udon Lunch Special. It came with: - A small bowl of vegetarian udon noodles - Tempura(prawn, sweet potato and eggplant) - Salad with orange sauce - 8 piece Alaska roll - Miso Soup All were delicious, I especially liked the tempura as they weren't burnt or overly greasy. Udon was good too. It was a very fulfilling lunch and at $12.95 it's a good value I think. We also shared Mochi dessert which came as a mix of green tea and mango. Incredibly fresh sushi but the customer service is what makes it a 5 star establishment. My niece was fussing and ended up needing breast milk. My sister didn't have any cover so she tried to cover as best as she could. One of the servers came by and offered my sister her jacket which we graciously accepted. A friend suggested this fairly new restaurant in the area. There wasn't a menu on yelp. I finally found a menu on their Facebook page which I noted was just put up in March 2018. I ordered the scorpion roll as it sounded the interesting and I was looking for a snack. The menu priced it at $11.95. I placed the order and was advised it would take 20 minutes as the roll was baked. No problem, thanks for the heads up. When I arrived to pay, the lady helping me at the front asked for $15.70. In my head, I couldn't figure out why taxes were so much more so I asked why was it &15.70. The server indicated that it was the price. I told her that I ordered off their menu on heir Facebook page and it indicated that the roll was $11.95. She went off to look up the price of the roll on the in store menu and showed me that it was $14.95. She then mentioned that they just changed the menu prices yesterday....... Seeing as the menu I found was put up for the business owners on their official Facebook page, I kind expected them to honour the price posted as a courtesy as there was an error on their end. Server just said sorry. Had they honoured the pricing, I would've been happy to tip over that price increase. But obviously that did not happen hence this review. Perhaps in the future, they should go over the pricing when placing an order so you know what you are paying. As for the roll itself, I wasn't a fan of it. The salmon was fishy. Came on a Sat night with my husband and got seated right away. The menu is quite extensive so it's a bit intimidating. I knew I wanted to try the Aburri sushi and I'm glad I did. We ordered the Seared Saba Oshizuki, Salmon Aburri, Charashidon (off menu), Assorted Tempura, and Agedashi Tofu. Everything was delicious and our server was very attentive. Price is good in relation to the portions. We ate the food too quickly before we could snap a picture. My husband raved about the chirashidon. The Saba brought back good memories from Japan. Tonight my parents offered to treat my family and my in-laws out to eat at this restaurant because my in-laws were visiting from out of town. On top of this, it was also my mother-in-law's birthday. We chose Isshin because my husband and I really enjoy their food. Tonight, the restaurant chose to use seating cushions (on the bench) that were not thoroughly dried from their wash, and they were still quite damp. The one my mother sat on was still so wet that the water seeped into her pants as she sat. Initially we were horrified because we thought maybe a previous child had had an accident on the cushion! To make matters worse, when we brought this to the attention of our server, the server acknowledged that the cushions were still damp from their wash. My question is: why would you use cushions in your restaurant if you know that they are still wet? Honestly, it was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in Lower Mainland/Vancouver/Surrey (and my husband and I eat out all the time and have been too many types of restaurants.) Plus the server said that the cusions had been wet since their wash two days ago! Now, cushions that stay damp for that long and are not dried properly are inclined to develop bacteria and mold. It is incredibly uncomfortable and distasteful to sit on wet cushions. Period. It was offensive because there was no apology and the waitress brought us extra napkins as if this was going to make my mom feel better. The other cushions on our bench were also damp. My mother was quite upset by the sensation of having to sit in wet clothing for dinner. She felt like she had wet her pants. This was not what she expected in a quality dining experience. I don't think the restaurant realised how uncomfortable the night was for her, nor did they take responsiblity that they were at fault for the experience. They offered us a few free miso soups and a $10 gift certificate to make amends. But this seemed like an empty gesture for what was supposed to be an important night of our family coming together after not having seen my in-laws for two years and celebrating my mother-in-law's birthday. Instead of wanting to take our time, we felt like we should eat and leave as quickly as we could. My mother wanted to go home to change out of her clothes. The rest of the evening we had poor service with some dishes coming out fast and others taking forever. The simplest menu item (which was for the children) came out the latest when the kids had been waiting even well after all the adults had eaten their meals. In the midst of all this, even my mother's order was taken down incorrectly. There was no reason for her to order Box B because she hates sashimi. Whether it was their fault or hers, this mistake was a result of the confusion and disarray that the initial cushion ordeal created. She was upset when the order was being taken and nothing had been said or done by the management to make her have any sense of peace. Furthermore, they ran out of chicken karaage for the bento boxes and offered to replace them with gyozas which we did not want. When we asked for ika karaage as a replacement, their server's response was that it would be extra for the replacement, but because of the incident with cushions they wouldn't charge us. They made it seem like they were doing us a favour by not charging us "extra" for an adequate replacement of a dish that they ran out of. The food tasted mediocre after this experience. I was extremely disappointed by the way the management chose to handle the situation. It is unfortunate but Isshin will need to re-evaluate the level of quality in their service and atmosphere if they want to reinforce the cost of their menu items. People go to dine out with their family not merely for good food, but dinner "together" (as they call themselves) is also an experience. I felt awful that at the end of the night my hard-working mother paid for a meal she did NOT enjoy and for an experience that was far from ideal. read more
