Hong Kong milk tea .. iced and hot... Unsweetened so you can sweeten to your liking with sugar
    Angelica T.

We have been ordering frozen asado siopaos from new town bakery for over a decade and taking them home to California or having family bring them to us. They are THE BEST siopao on the West of North America... And I just recently realized I've never had them fresh out of the oven so we went to get some this trip and they didn't disappoint. Definitely get it if you get a chance We heard their Lo Mien & brisket Mami were delicious so we had to try them too. Not being much of a noodle person, I wasn't all that into it. The lo mien kinda reminded me of egg drop soup with other ingredients inside them. The soup was good and so were the fixings but I just like my noodles thinner. The brisket Mami was ok too. I prefer my meat more tender and less fatty but to each his own right? The prawn turnover was pretty good but it would have been better fresh out of the fryer. As it was, we took home most of it to air fry later. The taro turnover was great tho. The outside was nice and flaky, the inside with taro and pork. Delicious. We also got the salty donuts which were nice to dip in the soups we got. We also got Iced hong Kong milk tea and hot milk tea. They were both unsweetened so you can sweeten it to your liking. I liked the hot version better, myself. Service was good until the rest of the servers went on break and left one person to run the shop. It got crowded and there was a wait for both the people eating in the restaurant and the ones ordering to-go at the counter. Overall the place had a mom and pop donut shop vibe with tables to the side. No tv for entertainment tho so you people watch instead.

Bbq pork buns are the best! Hands down. Foodie tourists are brought in by the bus loads to this restaurant. I kid you not.

FYI this place is closed until 3/1! They should've updated their Yelp hours. We came all the way from Seattle. Baos are legit though!

This place have a consistent long line. The staples are always sold out if you don't come early - such as egg tarts, BBQ pork buns and pineapple buns. Service is good. The are known for the white baos with savory fillings. Also a large selection of sweet pastries. You can dine in as well. But most people get boxes to go. There is a small parking lot - just need to be patient for the next person to leave to get a spot. Some staff speaks Cantonese, Tagalog and English. Menu items in these 3 languages as well.

This is the go to for buns since I can remember. Although the portion has gotten smaller and the price has gotten higher but it's still good. The shrimp turnover is a must when you go there but make sure you get there early as they get sold out fast.

Received these lovely sesame balls with red bean paste inside :) irresistible. We can't wait to see their bakery for ourselves!

I bought some buns to go: chicken, spicy pork And some sweet sticky dumpling with peanut and red beans. Sweet dumpling were almost same with Maxim's. Be careful to bite peanuts one because everything inside comes out easily. Very powdery filling. Meat buns : I recommend to warm up 20 sec before eating. The fat in the meat turns juice and bun's dough soaks up. Very tasty.

I had not been to the New town bakery and restaurant in quite awhile, after what happend this past Sunday,i dont think i will be back for a long time. I ordered a dozen pork and beef steam buns to go,when i arrived home,i discovered they had not been cooked, the insides of the buns were filled with raw uncooked meat. A picture is worth a thousand words....

We are visiting Vancouver. We were walking though Chinatown and we were looking for a dumpling place. All we encounter is tons of homeless people or drugged up people on the street or alleys. Plus none of restaurant looked inviting, finally deep in the town, we see this place called New Town Bakery and restaurant. In the front of the restaurant, it's the bakery. It had a long line up. You must go deep inside then you will find another line up for the restaurant. We didn't have to wait more 3 minutes. We were seated , and we ordered food easily.!We shared pork and shrimp dumplings, fried spicy tofu, vegetarian steam buns and oolong tea. The service is top notch and super quick. The food is excellent. The price is very good. Despite the crazy mess of outside of the restaurant . The restaurant itself is quaint, clean. It looks like mini diner. I am happy to discover this place while visiting the town. I will definitely recommend for dim sum or regular Asian dinning place. As they say don't judge by the cover.

    Siopao!
    Long K.

Siopao! The BBQ pork steamed buns are so good here! Every time I trek across the border, I always make an effort to go out of my way to pick up these goodies here. Despite a Chinese background, this bakery caters to a lot of the surrounding Filipino community as well. Each siopao is $2 now (a mild price hike over the last 1-2 years), but worth it. They're consistently made fresh and large, and stuffed. The BBQ filling is mildly sweet and addicting. The flavor is even better if you order a side of their sauce (don't forget this part either!). Theres also to basic Chinese bakery items as well, egg tarts etc. They have a regular menu with some Chinese takes on Filipino dishes (i.e. pancit). Prices are cheap and lines are consistently at the door at peak hours.

    Chicken siopao

Don't get me wrong, Newtown used to be great back in the day.. For the price you pay for these siopao buns, the filling is they give pretty pathetic. Paid $3.50 for chicken buns for a little meat ball inside. $4.50 for bola bola? Forget it. And on top of that, the customer service is so bad. The cashier is impatient and a bit rude. She doesn't really understand English well.

    Fresh Siaopao
    Kathy Y.

My boyfriend keeps dancing about how he has been going here for 15 years with his family but I'm used to Maxims or Keefer bakery in Chinatown for my baked goods. So I decided to join him.. Ambience: 1.5/5 super small, tacky and crammed. Displays are not visually appealing. The workers speak basically 80% Chinese and 20% English but warning you may have to repeat your order more than once. We had the Siaopao which was deliciously good. 4/5 and the Apple tarts 4.5/5, crispy flakey and just the right amount of Apple and filling inside! The vegetable spring roll I wanted to try, for a $1.30 can't go wrong! The inside was filled with bokchoy, carrots, water chestnuts, mushroom and some bamboo which was delicious, but super oily. So 3.5/5 The sesame red bean balls were pretty good and not oily, but smaller than Maxims. So despite the oiliness and Rudeness I give them 3.5 but Yelp only allows 3,4, so 3 it is.. Everything's approx $1.10,$1.30 per piece. If you order under 6 items you will be charged gst, also very important! CASH ONLY!!!! We had to walk a block to the HSBC to withdraw some $.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.

She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. Yes come on a date or impress business clients/boss or family celebrations.

I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024…read more This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.
