I've been here quite a few times. It is conveniently located on Joyce St. with some street parking on the side streets and the back. Heard that this establishment is related to the legendary New Town Bakery & Restaurant on East Pender St. The bao tastes exactly like New Town's - soft dough and pork asado so delicious! Really loved the way they made their bao buns, delicately made and buns are perfectly round and shaped. My visit today though was a bit disappointing. Has inflation affected the craft that built this bakery? The handiwork was sloppy, there seemed to be a lack of care in pleating the dough and the buns were flat as though squished. This one is super transit friendly - being right by Joyce Skytrain - there is also plenty of street parking in the surrounding areas. Place is very clean - and the steamed buns smell so great! - Service was very fast - and they serve you with a smile - but nothing above and beyond. Didn't try the drinks, so I can't be the judge of those, however I heard they are pretty good. It was my first time trying the drinks from Bao Bakery, I heard they used ceremonial matcha in their matcha lattes so I gave it a try. It definitely wasn't too sweet and had a deep earthy flavour, I would rate it as one of the top matcha lattes I've had this year. Would love to come back to try their hojicha. I also grabbed a Chicken Deluxe (Bola-Bola) which I recalled enjoying during my last visit a few years ago. Unfortunately the price increase from $3.75 to $5 and what seemed like a thicker bun exterior compared to the filling meant that I probably wouldn't repurchase again given the price point. I haven't seen this bun offering at other locations so it's worth a try once - particularly if you like salted egg which is inside the bun. I've gone to Bao several times for their siopao. Deliciously squishy bun and tasty fillings. Bao's got a variety of selection that reasonably priced and is conveniently located for commuters. Service was friendly and quick. The bakery only had a few seats. This trip I also tried the Ube donut and ube siopao. I prefer the siopao, the combination of the bun and creamier consistency of the ube hit the spot. Though convenient for commuters. People driving might have to circle around to find a spot. This is conveniently located near joyce skytrain station and bus loop. It is closed on Monday. For the longest time I didn't realize that and always thought it hardly opens. Now due to the covid-19 pandemic, it has become a take out place with take out window. So no, you could not even enter the store to check out the items visually. Menu is placed on the glass panel. Unless you are a regular or check Yelp for pictures, you can only use your imagination on what the buns and rolls and snacks look like. I like the fairly new item -- ube sesame ball. It is delicious but have it while warm or at least on the same day. It is quite hard and chewy and oily the next day. The steam buns are also good. Bbq pork (asado) is my favorite here. Siew Mai is not bad too as are the lumpia. I tried the halo halo on my first visit and I was not a Gan of it. So I just stick to the steam buns and other snack food. Ive been coming here a lot more because it's close to my house and one of the only places that have ube breads and baos! The ube paste is not to sweet but very tasty. The bao itself is usually quite soft but there was one time it was a little dry. We also quite enjoy their chicken deluxe buns, the coconut bun, bacon onion bun and curry beef bun. Bao Bakery is just across the street nestled in the busy junction of Joyce Collingwood station. The amount of times I've walked by, I always notice a line outside the front during these Covid times. That's how you know a place is good. Slowly but surely, I'm trying out what they offer. Parking is difficult to find in this area. Easy to get to if you bus or skytrain. We tried a few baos and some other pastries like egg tarts and weiner bun. It was good but not great. This was the fourth Chinese bakery that I visited during my time in Vancouver for my trip and it was awesome! I visited this bakery yesterday at 6:35 P.M. and it was pretty quiet inside. Also, the service was good when ordering and the staff was nice. The first item that I got was the Ube Donut which had the perfect level of sugar on top, ube that had a good sweetness level, and a soft texture. The next item that I got was the Pineapple Bun which was soft and had a wonderful sweetness level. Then, I got the Egg Tart which had an egg with good flavor and a crust with good texture. The fourth item that I got was the Pineapple Coconut Bun which had a good amount of coconut, balanced flavor, and a good amount of sweetness. The fifth item that I got was the Apple Tart which was soft and had the perfect level of apple flavor. The last item that I got was the Steamed Chicken Bun which had a fluffy bun and tender meat. Just recently discovered this bakery and from all the great things I've heard I made sure I got a good variety of pastries! And now I wished I gotten more! The selection here is top notch! But do make sure you go early because they do sell out some selections during the day. I honestly loved each of these buns I can't pick a favourite! I got the Apple Tart + Ube Donut + Panko Beef Curry Bread + a variety of their steamed buns. They even have frozen steam buns available too! You sell baos? You have a bakery? Bao + Bakery = Bao Bakery. Get it? Bad jokes aside, Bao Bakery is a great neighborhood joint that has a good variety of options, at a reasonable price. The buns are all huge, service is quick and they take credit card. NICE. I'll split this review into two parts, the baos and the bakery. The baos are excellent - massive steamed buns filled with your choice of filling. The bun itself is incredibly plush, pillowy and pliable with a neutral flavor (and color) to let the filling shine - everything that you want from a steamed bun. The bbq pork is not as sweet as other bbq pork buns I've had, which I really actually like, especially for a savory breakfast. The chicken buns are also deeply savory. The regular pork bun does have some meatball effect density going on, but that's normal. Can't really go wrong. The bakery on the other hand is ok. Egg tarts lack that flaky crust feel that I really want in the pastry but the egg custard itself is lightly sweetened eggy awesomeness. The hot dog bun has a slight sweetness to it, which I personally find a bit strange but I do appreciate the burnished crust. Pineapple bun is craggly but not as much so as other places I've been. The sesame balls are huge and crunchy and stuffed with red bean. In other words, decent but not its strongest point. Stick with the baos I say and get the bakery elsewhere, but for an all in one shop, it's definitely convenient, especially given its location. Also very vegetarian friendly! read more

I came for the hype that is ube sesame ball. Excitedly, I hungry-ordered a bunch of their menu: ube sesame ball, sesame ball, fried shrimp dumpling, curry beef baked bun, pineapple baked bun, coconut baked bun, barbequed pork baked bun, siu mai, asado steamed bun and bola bola steamed bun. Some items were on the higher price point compared to other establishments. The steamed buns were solid, both in flavour and fluffiness of bun. The baked buns are the better choice, in my opinion. Sesame ball, siu mai, fried dumpling were better than other places. BUT the one thing I really came for, the ube sesame ball was a disappointment - it lacked flavour and was super dry. Yeah, I'm not sure if it was only this visit, but I recommend the other things I listed were good, but proceed with caution for the ube sesame ball. read more

This bakery is such a great addition to the Joyce-Collingwood community! My family and I have been regular customers here since their opening day. Throughout the years, their quality, price and taste have been consistent and amazing. It is very affordable and the ingredients they use are fresh. I find that the buns here are always fresh and big portion and very filling. My favourite items here have been the BBQ pork buns (baked and steamed are both good), the egg and ham bun is AMAZING, the weiner buns, fried shrimp dumplings, bola bola steamed bao, siu mai, cinnamon donuts, coconut buns, and egg tarts are amazing. TBH every single thing here is amazing and I've never been let down. The steamed bao buns are cheaper than New Town and I honestly think that they are comparable and even better (more meat filling). You also can buy frozen bao buns/dumplings from here and make them at home. Their coffee drinks are delicious as well. I have to say this place is more trendy (the name says it too) compared to its competitor. Newly open and seems like already a popular place. Lots of people lining up. Only issue, I have here is that its pretty pricy for Asian buns (double the price compared to other competitor and some triple). But the meat inside is quite meaty in the chicken deluxe buns. The reason why I am giving it 3 stars is because compared to other Vancouver bao in the area, its good. But if you compare it to Asia or Kam Dao in Richmond, its still very different in taste compared to the very Asian Style. But again this is probably not authentic Chinese bun. Its a mix of Chinese, Canadian and Filipino and some sort of western style. Its located near Joyce station so location wise is convenient. read more

This trendy bakery sells traditional baked goods and steam buns. We bought a couple of apple tarts, a couple of pineapple buns and a couple of coconut pineapple buns. All of them tasted wonderful. The apple tarts were soft and fluffy and smelt very good. We visited this bakery after 8pm. There was 50% off after 8pm on weekdays. It was awesome! We would love to go back and try some steam buns and other baked goods especially there would be a discount after 8pm. There is a plenty of street parking that we wouldn't need to worry about looking for a parking spot. You can walk and don't need to drive if you live in this neighbourhood. Other than buns and baked goods, their iced matcha latte and Halo Halo on their menu look very good. Their siumai is popular as well. There are so many things to try. I was glad when they opened! I take the 43 and it's always nice to have good place for steamed buns after a long commute. Having early and late store hours is great. I can get a hot bun before taking the bus in the morning, and another one after taking the long trip from UBC. Chicken Deluxe /Bola Bola is my favorite - it's a mix of chunky fillings inside - mushrooms, vegetables, meatball-like meat?. The bun itself is tasty, so if you consume the fillings first, the 'left over' bun portion can be eaten by itself without a problem! I look forward to trying their siumai next time! read more

I would say when it comes to siopao, Bao Bakery is my go-to. Nice and respectful staff. The service is very quick and their packaging doesn't look cheap. My favorite to order is their chicken siopao while my daughter and my fiancé likes pork asado and sometimes I would order siumai which I also like. Keep up the good work. I just tried a couple of the fresh individual buns. I noticed they sell frozen steam buns all packaged up. Prices average around $12-14 per half dozen, so $2+ per. I quite like the set up and the friendly service. Perhaps a bit pricey for the location, but the quality is at par. They should do well being next to Joyce Station. I can't think of another decent Asian bakery within a mile radius. So this one should be a profit maker. read more

Strolled into this place out of curiosity today and was so delighted by the big selection of baos & pastries! They have all kinds of steamed buns/bao, some plump, delicious looking siu mais, egg tarts, and more at really affordable prices. As I just had lunch, I settled with a big thing of cinnamon twist bun and it was less than $2! Clean interior, friendly service (you go to the counter and order), and they have coffee & teas. This place serves the normal Chinese bakery buns but also steamed buns too, which on a cold day, tastes really good. =) The prices are higher than other bakeries but then again, you are going for quality. The buns are about the same size as other bakeries, but taste fresher. I do tend to go to Maxims a lot as it's only a couple of blocks away from my house and they have smaller buns which have special price. However if I'm in the neighbourhood or driving by Bao Bakery, I may stop by to grab a red bean bun. On some occasions, there is a line up here since there really isn't another Chinese bakery nearby. This is a more modern style Chinese bakery so maybe that's why the price is higher. read more
