The place itself is pretty nice and comfortable. The food is pretty good and the $5 menu from 11-2:30pm is pretty decent. Unfortunately the waitress was not friendly and seem to be rushing us to leave at noon time. Definitely a good spot if they improve the service and attitude.

Cuisine: 7 Service: 7 Decor: 7 Value: 8 Overall: 7 I was in Bayside on August 8th for a work meeting and found this new restaurant by accident because it's two doors down from my original target place, Nan Bei Ho. I walked in and found David, owner of three other Shanghainese restaurants (The Bund in Forest Hills, Bund Dumpling House in Astoria, Shanghai Time in Manhattan) at the helm, who I am familiar with. This is his fifth restaurant, after selling Shanghai Eats in Flushing two years ago. Clearly he'a doing something right. Yesterday was his first day of soft opening. I happened to be his first customer even though I originally wanted Taiwanese food. With this restaurant, he is introducing a new concept that's very popular in China - 私房菜. Literal translation is "Food Cooked in Private Kitchen". What it really means is that dinner will be reservation only and preordered. That will allow the chef to buy the freshest ingredients and make whatever you want on the night of your visit. For example, they can do a live 5-6 lb Carp Three Ways, utilizing the head for soup, body for braising, and tail portion fried. Also, instead of frozen eel that many restaurants use, they can serve live eel instead. As long as you know what Shanghainese dish you like, you can order it. I'm pretty excited to give that a try and more than happy to setup an event if anyone is interested. As for my meal that day, I had a bowl of Mini Wonton Soup, which was such a good comfort food. Then an order of David's signature item, Pan Fried Pork Soup Dumplings. The ones at Pan Bao 66 in New World Mall food court certainly is amazing, but don't sleep on these. Check out the amount of broth in a single soup dumpling from my pic. Lastly, David brought me a few Nutella & Banana Dumplings (off menu) to taste. The filling was not bad, but I gave him some critique on the skin. For dinner, I also brought home some cold appetizers - Shanghainese style Spongy Gluten and Drunken Chicken. Both were decent, but I had better in NYC. I certainly plan to come back for dinner. Hopefully, they can make some of the dishes from my childhood growing up in Shanghai that is hard to find, or not available at all in the US. Regardless if they can or not, I'm glad I have an option for the freshest Shanghainese food possible.

I was excited to stop by iShanghai during the 2nd week of their soft opening since I read good things about the owner's other restaurants. The restaurant was packed when we arrived around 1pm on a Sunday. The restaurant had about 10 tables, 2 of which were for bigger parties. Most of the diners seemed to have finished their food and were waiting around for their checks. The 3 waiters were mostly occupied in the kitchen and not available for service. It took about 15 minutes or so for them to provide checks, clean up the tables and seat the new wave of customers. I noticed that we were the 2nd party to sit but the waiters tried to take our order last. We ordered the Shanghainese pan fried pork soup dumplings ($1 per bun promotion), steamed pork soup dumplings, and the Shanghai style pork chop over rice cake. The steamed soup dumplings came out first and at first glance the sizing and thickness was inconsistent for each soup dumpling. It was apparent that the non translucent buns were thicker and doughier. The taste of the filling was very subtle and not as flavorful as I would have liked. The pork chop over rice cake was not what we were expecting. The rice cakes were fried and crispy, but were a bit too dense and hard to eat. I was hoping the thick brown sauce to be on the sweet side but it was very salty. The pork chop was crispy but nothing to write home about. Lastly, the pan fried soup dumpling were certainly very crispy and juicy, but it was just too doughy. I prefer the ones in New world mall better and for a better value too. I really wanted to like iShanghai but they didn't deliver on service or food for their soft opening. I don't think I will be returning but I hope that they do better in the future.

My in laws heard a new soup dumpling opened so we decided to check it out. The place is on the smaller end with about 2 round tables for 6-8 people and maybe about 6-8 4 tops. We came here on two separate occasions and both time, we didn't have to wait too long for a table. I was pleasantly surprised by the pork and pork/crab soup dumplings. The skin was thin and it was packed with flavor. The mala soup dumpling seems to more fragile. They were popped upon arrival. It was not too spicy and still kept the mala flavor. The service was friendly and attentive. The mala soup dumplings were undercooked and they immediately gave us a new batch plus heated up the original batch for us. The con is the portions were small but it allowed us to try more dishes. I would come back!

New Shanghai restaurant opened in Bayside. I was very excited to go there for lunch during their soft open. Everything was delicious! I thought their shredded beef with hot peppers over noodle soup , which happens to be one of my favorite dishes, was excellent and very flavorful. The xiao long baos were also very tasty! We also ordered their pan fried pork soup dumplings to go. The restaurant felt spacious and tables were not crowded or top of each other. It was busy during Saturday lunch but the wait for a table was not long and the noise level was not bad. Their prices are reasonable and service was attentive. My compliments to the Chef - I will be coming back to try other dishes on the menu.

We went for dinner on a Saturday and it was not busy. Simple decor inside and service was okay. Good family combo dinner deal but mediocre food. The 4 of us got the Shanghainese Drunken Chicken, Crabmeat With Pork Soup Dumplings, Fish Head with Tofu Soup, Shredded Baby Bamboo With Pork, Chicken With Basil Casserole, and Braised Pork on the combo. We also added an order of Mapo Tofu, and Shanghainese Salted Cabbage With Pork Rice Cakes. Everything was okay, nothing really standout. The Rice Cake was bland and the soup was salty.

Low key place with AMAZING pan fried SOUPY buns... dough is thin like a dumpling, pan fried upside down so the pinched bottom is golden and crunchy, the pork filling is substantial and fresh, and the delicious soup makes each bun a perfect bundle of happiness. This bun tastes like good fortune. This is one you write home about.

I'm half Shanghainese and very excited to have this restaurant open up near me. Their shredded pork with udon was very tasty. Pork buns were juicy! Scallion pancakes were too oily but the bamboo shoot with pork and egg over rice lunch special was very good. Will definitely order from here again and try other items!

Food is not so bad. But not making sense when they ask for cash and still charges tax for that. And 3% more fore credit card.

The filling was decent, but the vinegar on the side was too mild. I'm used to a darker, more robust vinegar with XLB, so this didn't quite hit. Braised pork - very tender and flavorful, served with quail eggs. This was one of the stronger dishes. Yangzhou fried rice - not too oily which I liked, but served with only 5 an small shrimps... Sweet & sour shredded potato (cold dish) - slightly spicy, I really enjoyed this one. It was part of a promo where you can get it for $1 when you spend $30 on entrees, so definitely worth adding. Overall, I enjoyed the meal. Not everything stood out, but it's solid enough that I'd recommend it, and I'd come back to try more of the menu.

I've come here during prime lunch time on Saturdays and there's always been plenty of tables in a nice clean ambiance. In terms of the quality of food, I would say it is definitely up to par with decent serving sizes... my go to orders are the pork soup dumplings, pickled mustard greens and spicy fish stew, and pan fried buns. The bathroom is also outside the restaurant and shared with the mall so you will need to grab a key to go, in case that's important to you :)

Also ordered garlic shrimp, which was very juicy and flavorful! Would definitely back. Ordered the wine soaked chicken, nine-spice rabbit, and a bowl of rice. I'm always on the hunt for a great xiaolongbao, and I was hoping nothing had changed since my last visit. Thankfully, they were just as good as I remembered. The skin is thin, and there's a generous amount of soup inside, which is exactly what I look for. That said, the crab meat noodles were disappointing this time. The amount of crab meat seemed significantly reduced compared to before, so much so that if I hadn't known what I was ordering, I don't think I would have been able to identify it as crab meat noodles at all. We also tried the osmanthus cakes, which my sister really enjoyed. Personally, I'm not a fan of the mochi-like texture, so while I can appreciate why others might like them, they just aren't for me. The restaurant itself is still beautiful, and the servers remain extremely polite, as you'd expect at a place of this caliber. I'll definitely be coming back again...at least for the soup dumplings.
