Two families (11 adults) visited for dinner recently. Since Sam Won Gahk is under new management and likely has a new chef, I was initially worried the restaurant might lose its diverse menu, signature flavors, or quality of service. Fortunately, they have maintained everything that made them great - in fact, the presentation and taste of the dishes are now significantly better. We were very happy with our meal, though the service was slightly lacking. The waitress wasn't as attentive as we'd hoped; we had to wait for tea refills and struggled to place additional orders in a timely manner. To be fair, she appeared quite exhausted from a long shift. Nevertheless, we were very disappointed when she said 맛탕 (mattang; sugar-coated fried Japanese sweet potatoes), a usual dessert, was out of inventory. Despite that, the food was excellent. Warning - Horrible customer service and offensive management. On Jan 11, 2026 we had lunch at this restaurant. We found a long, black hair in our soup and promptly notified the owner. We expected an apology but were astonished that the owners accused us that the hair was from my wife. We were mortified. After losing our appetite, we left. Due to the apalling service, I left a very small tip. As I was getting ready to enter my car, the owner ran out and demanded why I was upset. I couldn't believe that the owner wanted to confront me for his restaurant's error. He asked us to look at their kitchen to prove the hair didn't come from his restaurant. My wife and I obliged and took a quick look at his kitchen which was a huge mistake. The kitchen was in disarray and God only knows the cleanliness of his restaurant and the quality of food he is serving his patrons. We were about to leave when the opener's wife grabbed my wife's hair in some desperate attempt to validate that the hair was from my wife. The hair that we found was long and black while my wife's hair is light blonde. We were outraged and considered calling the police. The owners have no sense of decency and customer service and was trying to place blame on us when they were clearly at fault. This experience ruined our day and here is fair warning that this restaurant is unclean and the owners are unfit to run a business serving food to the public. read more

New Management We visited here on a Sunday afternoon and I hadn't been back because several years ago, when I tried an old childhood restaurant, the food was not good. However, when we returned, we were told the owners changed, they added a few new items to the menu like the pictures seafood dish and the jjajangmyun was delicious. My friend was in town and was craving for some classic Korean Chinese cuisine. I'm all down for the old school restaurant vibes but the food was nothing extraordinary. For a Sunday night, it was a bit slow. I've been to the Flushing location before and was told the Bayside location was better. Can't say I agree much but at least the customer service was alright. The tang su yook flavor overall was lacking for me and was over powered by the use of cornstarch in its sauces. It was like gelatin at that point. Jja jang myeon was decent. I came here for lunch with my wife and her family. I am not a big Korean food fan because noodles and spicy food are not my things, But my wife says this place is good and I had to give it a try. And most of the dishes we ordered were noodles. I got a little taste of some of the noodle soups and thought there were okay. I thought the shrimp dish we ordered was good, and I enjoyed the side kimchi dishes. The service was as excellent as the food came out quickly and hot. We entered from the back parking lot entrance. Don't forget to bring your vaccination card and ID upon entry. For a Friday night there was plenty of seating. We didn't have to wait for a party of 4. For appetizers we got fried dumplings and sweet and sour pork. Not a lot of places give good portion sizes for appetizers. I was impressed we got a plate full of dumplings. Not just 3 on a small plate or something like that. And they were huge chunky dumplings too. Fried pork was juicy and saucy. For main we got the fried rice and black bean noodles. Both were average but they fill you up. You start with the hot tea set and the small pickled dishes. The red kimchi was great and it paired well with everything. Can't wait to come back. read more

Been coming here for a while and love the food. They have a great lunch special which is basically a combo of noodles with some other dish of meat or vegetables. The servers are very attentive and fast. The place is pretty wide and there are a good amount of seats even for larger parties. Can't wait for my next lunch visit here. Classic. Sam Won Gak -Bayside- is old school Korean Style-Chinese in all the right, delicious ways. The restaurant is brightly lit, and clean. Decor is 90's style Asian American Living Room - think lots of wood, landscape paintings, and usually some community program on the tv. So yes, not exactly romantic but it is nostalgic as if you're visiting your parents or grandparents home. Now, the service is no frills, but not unfriendly. Also, it's nice to see that employees seem long-term; which say's good things about management. This time I went on a rainy night so I ordered Noodles with Chop Suey Soup (Jjampong) because I really craved something with broth. The noodle soup definitely hit the spot. It was savory, not too spicy loaded with vegetables and some seafood (largely squid, shrimp, etc.). My group also ordered their famous Shrimp with Pepper and Garlic Sauce which tasted fresh, sweet and slightly vinegary. Needless to say, it was a hit and consumed in marathon speed. Their fried dumplings seemed to have changed- but for the better. They're bigger, a bit doughy, crisp and you can really taste (I think) the chives. Of course, all the dishes come with little servings of kim-chi, raw onion, yellow beets, and undiluted Black bean sauce. My family and I have been going here for years now, and though a lot has changed in the neighborhood, this establishment has been in a positive way pretty consistent in terms of food, service and management. Also, kudos for actually having a parking lot!- though yes, during the weekends and holidays it can get busy. For much much easier mixing at home, like to rinse noodles in hot water to loosen them up, drain really well, then mix with the sauce. I came here for a special event, and there are private rooms in the basement which was very nice. It's a quiet and intimate place if you're looking to have a group dinner or celebration (e.g. baby's first birthday, bday celebration, etc.) The employees were very accommodating and attentive. We ordered the course meal and the total was very affordable (on a per person basis of course). The dishes were very interesting and there was so many different kinds. We ended up bringing home leftover for days! Although secluded, you could hear the chairs moving upstairs and it was awkwardly silent. The room had a very dark decor and it felt like a dungeon. It would be nice if they lightened it up a bit. I think some light music in the background would've made it a little better. This is the only reason for the one star knockdown :) read more

I love to see the red pepper and layer of red hot oil layer floating on the top. They give your plenty seafood, scallops, squid, shrimp and mussels. The broth is deep and rich. I came here on Christmas day on a spur with my family and family friends. I'm sure street parking wouldn't have been too difficult but as it was a pretty cold day, we just went for valet and the guys were super chill. When we went inside, the restaurant was bustling so I knew that this place must be good. As basic Koreans, we ordered many servings of meat and classic korean soups (jjigaes) and seafood pancakes (haemul pajun). All the food was really delicious and I honestly had nothing to complain about. The staff was very nice and attentive and the cooked the meat for us without making a mistake of overcooking them. We chose this place because there's another with the same name in Flushing that is excellent. I was slightly disappointed. The black bean noodles lacked flavor, which might have been excusable if the noodles were at least hot. The noodles and sauce were lukewarm and even after adding red pepper flakes, it wasn't any better. Not that it was necessarily bad but it wasn't good either. The shrimp fried rice was alright. They had a good amount of shrimp in it. It wasn't greasy so I liked that. However, there's nothing that really sets it apart from other fried rice that I've had in other places. The side dishes of the kimchi, onion, and pickled radish were good. The kimchi was tasty, the onion wasn't spicy, and the pickled radish wasn't too soaked in the juice. The food came out in a little over 10 minutes, which was good since we were in a hurry. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, bright, spacious, and clean. It's located just close enough to Bell Blvd without getting lost in the hustle and bustle. Street parking isn't difficult to find. The staff is very attentive and friendly so that's a plus right there. Nothing to complain about. I went in for lunch and ordered the combo: seafood noodle soup and jajangmyun. I had been craving jajangmyun for a while but ended up loving the seafood noodle soup more because it was more sweet and rich in flavor. Having lived in Bayside for the last 12 years, I was always wondering what this "Korean-Chinese" restaurant was.. And 2 weeks ago, my friend took me here cuz she had a craving for Jajangmyeon.. Loll I'm like, sure..why not? Came on a Thursday afternoon.. It was dead. One lonely guy in the corner slurping down his bowl of noodles and huge plate of mapo tofu in front of him. Sat down, and we both agreed on ordering the same, a bowl of Jajangmyeon, and this dish, I forget the name, but it was sweet and sour beef, fried and tossed in a gooey sauce. Food came out relatively quickly. The waitress gave us a pair of scissors with our Jajangmyeon.. I guess to cut the noodles cuz they were too long. But I didn't. I don't know how I feel about a random ass pair of scissors going into my cooked food. O_O Um..no thank you! Loll The black sauce wasn't very flavorful, though I liked the texture of the noodles. It was very filling too, but in a sorta satisfying way. The sweet and sour beef, despite the unappealing gooey appearance of the sauce..was actually quite good. Had lots of flavor and I actually enjoyed it. Interior decor was meh..nothing special. Floors looked rather old and could use cleaning. Service was good. Servers were courteous. There is a relatively small private lot in the back with about a dozen spaces. Plenty of residential parking nearby. I don't think I'm gonna come back. If you're trying to call in a take out order coming from Flushing they will repeatedly tell you they are in Bayside instead of taking the order. Called multiple times bc they just kept saying "HELLO?? HELLO? HELLO?" the 1st time while trying to place an order in Chinese (they speak Chinese). Final call I spoke English and they would NOT take my order and repeatedly said they are in Bayside and not Flushing. Had to give them their address for them to let me place my order the 5th time I asked if I can place a take out order. By then I was pulling into the parking lot. This place really up'd their game. For a long time I thought that this place was far inferior to the Flushing location but the food here was vastly improved. We ordered the usual items and it was delicious. I think this place is slightly more expensive - tang soo yuk was like $20 but with a slightly larger serving?! I've been going around to try all these Korean-style Chinese restaurants and this is the latest one i've tried. Keeping in mind what I've had in all the other restaurants, this one wasn't spectacular and not my favorite. We had one jjajangmyun, one jjambong with extra seafood, and the fried shrimp with sweet and sour sauce. jjajangmyun: good flavor, not too salty, but a bit too sweet jjambong: not spicy at all so you could really taste the salt. There wasn't much seafood in here at all even though we already got the extra seafood. Other places have a lot more squid, shrimp and mussels. I also choked on the squid cause they didn't remove a part of the skins and it got stuck on my throat... fried shrimp: a good portion and it tasted really good. The sauce wasn't very sour which I didn't mind but I know others like it more sour than i do. they have a parking lot in the back which was very convenient! read more

Korean Chinese fare is a specialty that peppers the landscape of Bayside and Flushing. One comes here to enjoy jjajangmyun, jjampong and the Korean takes on sweet and sour chicken and/or pork. The competition in this space is pretty fierce and Sam Won Gahk does a decent job of providing diners with a good meal. The jjampong (spicy seafood noodles) are pretty good and the broth is spicy and flavorful. The jjajangmyun on the other hand was a bit bland but certainly passable. The sweet and sour chicken was pretty good with lots of crispy fried chicken covered in sauce. The sauce here is a bit sweet for my taste (I thought it could've used more sour) but that's personal preference. Prices here are fair and I think its slightly cheaper than the other Korean Chinese restaurant down Northern Boulevard. My only issue here was that the servers albeit nice did not understand or speak a lick of English. It made ordering more difficult than it needed to be.
