I've come here specifically for their jamppong "Chop Suey" noodle soup for decades . If you don't know what it is, it's basically a spicy seafood noodle soup. You can have it with no spice, mild, or hot. There are so many Korean restaurants on northern but I usually go to this one bc it has a parking lot. Their food is decent and delicious. Sometimes I also get the noodles in brown sauce, which is pretty good too. When I come with family, we always get the Sweet & sour Fried Beef. They also have a shrimp version if you like that. Also, the Chicken in garlic sauce is yummy. These dishes are meant for sharing and big in portion. You can ask for white rice to go with it. The beef fried rice is also good too. The kimchi fried rice is delicious but a bit pricey. One thing that I wish they have more of is the ban chan small dishes appetizers. I wish they had more variety like other Korean spots. read more

Me and my family have been coming here for years! The owner of the restaurant always comes by to speak to us in fluent Chinese (they also speak Korean). We are creatures of habit so we always order the same thing so I can't tell you too much about the other menu items. Jajangmyeon and Seafood Noodle Soup are their star dishes. There is something about their gooey gravy sauce and soft noodles that keeps us going back. If you wanted to order their rice dishes, the sauce consistency is the same as the jajangmyeon but has this salty chicken flavor. The portions for those are HUGE, so one is enough to share for 2-3. Everyone says this place is not that great, but I disagree. I've been eating here for the past 5 years and I have to say, it's one of the better chinese korean restaurants from the neighborhood. It's not as good as you jjajang me champpong, but they are pretty darn good! ESPECIALLY THE DESSERT WHICH IS CANDIED SWEET POTATO I love coming here because at the end of your meal, they give you a plate of these delicious babies with your check. I prefer this chain compared to the one they have in flushing. It's generally less crowded even during peak hours and there's more parking spaces. Also, it's easier to find if you're new to the area or if it's your first time going. The food is great, I usually get the same things but I recommend their black bean noodles (), spicy seafood noodles (), sweet and sour pork (), and sweet garlic shrimp () and the fried rice. The English names of these might not be accurate so forgive me, but these are the dishes I usually order and they're delicious!! The prefer the service here also. Since there's less customers, there are more waiters and waitresses available. The food comes out a bit quicker also. Oh!! There's also this one waiter who is a native Latino but speaks Korean fluently!! It was quite a pleasant surprise but he's my favorite waiter~. So overall, I recommend Sam Won Gahk! They serve good Chinese influence Korean food!! One of the first things that popped out of my mouth when I saw my parents at JFK is: "I want some ja jang myun." Well, one reason to go home for the holidays is to be pampered...and Korean Chinese is my idea of being pampered with food I crave. I've been going to Sam Won Gahk for my ja jang myun for years. There's a good amount of pork pieces along with diced potato and onion, a lot of black bean sauce to coat your noodles, and the noodles have a nice texture. My father generally gets the jam pong, which is noodles in spicy soup. If you are like my father and are staying away from spicy food, you can request that the soup be "white" or non-spicy and still get noodles in a refreshing soup. My family also almost always orders the tan soo yuak, sweet and sour beef fried in a potato starch batter and served with a clear sauce (as opposed to a red sweet and sour sauce). I am also a big fan of the hae sam tang which is braised sea cucumber...hm, if you don't like sea cucumber, definitely not the dish for you as there's just tons and tons of sea cucumber here. I am definitely a fan of sea cucumbers (they are also very curious and odd marine life...they can turn inside out...although thinking about that might turn you off sea cucumbers even more). read more

I should have read the reviews before going to this place but it was a surprise from my parents and I did not want to hurt their feelings about it. The restaurant itself is very cozy. Reminded me of places in Korea actually. There were 4 waitstaff and two busboys and they never once refilled my empty water glass despite the fact that our table was right in front of the attending waiters. I should have sensed that something was wrong when our very simple "lunch specials" were taking so long to come out of the kitchen and other people who had ordered after us were getting their food much quicker. Plus, the waitress didn't even ask us the kind of soup we wanted. Side dishes consisted of kimchee, yellow pickled radish, slices of raw onion and a tablespoon of black bean sauce. The hot and sour 'seafood' soup consisted of ONE shrimp, lots of shredded onion, two pieces of kimchee and the soup base from a very commonly known instant hot and spicy noodle that we often have at home. I was a little disgusted by this. The Chinese Lunch Special is really horrible. I got sick and so did my mother after eating the "fried rice" and what was supposed to be chicken but turned out to be tasting very OLD and dried out. My mother got the garlic and pepper fried chicken and it was really bad, though the sauce was okay, the meat was OLD. So was the chicken and broccoli. It tasted very very OLD and dried out. No flavor. My dad got the Szechuan tofu which was basically hot and sour soup mixed with soft bean curd and fried rice...yucky fried rice. If they are indeed famous for the Jahjangmyun then they should take all the other garbage off the menu and stick with what is good because it definitely made me reluctant to go back there. Perhaps if everything else in the area is closed down and my car dies and I have no way of hopping public transportation into Flushing, then maybe I will try the Jajangmyun at this place. read more

The owner is super nice and welcomed us into the restaurant by calling my group "very good looking." He knows how to make us happy before we sit down! The menu and food was sort of recognizable for me, but I like how the dishes have been "Koreanized." The Ja Jang Myun is pretty good here. Not overpowering like the Chinese style. Mi Papi and the owner are boys from back in the day so my review is slightly biased because we always get free Soju haha. I'm also always amazed at those Chinese/Korean hybrids that are capable of speaking both fluently. Amazes and confuses the crap out of me simultaneously. The place used to be a bar that I went in my adolescent years illegally so it was eerily familiar when I first stepped in. I then mentioned it to my father and he said, "yeah you weren't 21 yet when it was a bar." Oops =X There's plenty of seating with two floors. Upstairs is where the big round tables are for parties of over four. The spicy seafood noodle soup is a must, I love the noodles and the broth. The record in my prime was 3 bowls :oink: Their sweet sour beef or shrimp is also very well battered, fried and sauced with little chopped bits of carrots and garlic. But I regularly get the egg drop soup, gumpung shrimp, and fried rice and its good every time except now the portions are getting smaller and smaller :( yet, I still go back. Their Fried Chicken in Garlic and Pepper Sauce is kind of bland, mostly because it is not salty enough. Also, as a Korean-American I think I can safely say that their kimchi just tastes like mediocre pickled cabbages sprinkled with hot pepper flakes just for the mere sake of trying to look like kimchi. The dining area and tables/chairs are placed very sparsely. Decor is very plain though some aspects of the place such as the windows could be characterized as gaudy. Their Brown sauce noodles and Ja-pong (noodles in "spicy" seafood soup- except that it wasn't spicy at all) were just okay. I do have to compliment them for not making them so greasy, a mistake I've seen many times. Though they could add some vegetables to the Brown Sauce noodles. The fried chicken with sweet and sour place was more batter than chicken..thin slice of flour with barely any chicken. Not worth the carbs. Standard Korean Chinese menu. If you order in advance they will have your food ready for you when you sit down. Service is a little slow. The sauce is too sweet for me, but the spice level was good and there was allot of meat in my buljajang. The noodles also standard. The sweet and sour sauce was pink and tasted like pineapple sauce (Always get it on the side!) And they couldn't make it spicy for us, boo. But the pork was perfectly fried and we ended up eating all of it anyway. It does go well with jajangmyun. Major plus is parking lot. Huge portion. Love this place! Twice I brought my sons friends from his church to have a private party and they love this place. They loved the black noodles & I love the seafood noodle. We also ordered the other dishes and they really taste good. On some occasions, we ordered take out, especially when I am having party. The bad thing, they don't deliver and whenever I ordered take out, they make mistakes. Just like the crispy beef with sauce..(sauce on the side) they forgot to put the sauce, and my husband has to come back to pick it up again. This is by far, my favorite (chain?) restaurant in Queens. I've been living here all my life and practically grew up on Jja Jjang Myun & Tang Soo Yook. I'm not sure whether this review is on the Sam Won Gahk in Bayside or Flushing (there are two). I personally prefer the Flushing one because I can take a bus there rather quickly from where I live - it's location is very convenient by the way. On to the actual food review... If you are Korean in Flushing and never heard of or been here before, you probably are a hermit. They've been here even before I came to Flushing. Most restaurants come and go around this area - the restaurant turnover on the real estate here is unbelievable. Sam Won Gak has been in Flushing for a long time almost as long as Kum Gang San (a Korean-Japanese restaurant in Flushing) because they serve the best Jja Jjang Myun (I usually get the double-sized), Jjam Bbong, and Tang Soo Yook. Those are the three staples of Koreanized Chinese food that this restaurant is known for and righteously deserve my personal award for "Best in New York." I've been to all Jja Jjang Myun places around town, and this place blows other places out of the water because of its consistently delicious "black sauce." The people greet you very warmly when you walk in except when it's very crowded busy (I guess understandable). I've eaten here for almost 7 years and it has always been the best Koreanized Chinese food. Even my relatives from California and Washington State come here whenever they visit. read more
