Honestly, this place was waaaay nicer too, in my opinion. My room was large, even if somewhat outdated, but God, the view of the forest from the room's large windows was unbelievable. I was mesmerized watching the falling leaves from the trees. There was a lounge area on the first floor with a coffee bar, seating, games, etc. I wish the fireplace was going, but my girlfriends and I split a bottle of wine and hung out for a few hours. Awesome inn that I would definitely stay at again.

This area of Vermont doesn't have much lodging choice except B&Bs and ski resort condos so for value, this one is worth it. Very convenient- on Rte 30 on the way to Stratton Mountain, Bromley Mountain, Magic Mountain, Manchester outlets, etc. My room and adjoining bathroom were small and quaint but clean and very comfortable. Breakfast is in their restaurant area- delicious food. We didn't try their dinner but it smelled great- apparently, they are a gourmet, multi-star restaurant. They also had afternoon wine & cheese. Owners and staff are really nice and go out of their way to make you feel welcome (it's a little jarring when you travel from city life- at first, you wonder why people are so nice!). An example was breakfast our first morning- we planned to leave for Stratton early without a sitdown breakfast and told the owners ahead of time not to expect us. In the morning, Ed had warm blueberry muffins that he ran out to us as we were packing our car...they were the best muffins I've ever tasted! Note to those who can't do without some modern conveniences- most rooms and their common rooms don't have televisions (yes, it's an old rustic inn in Vermont but if you're stuck inside without a book, it's nice to have the choice to use modern technology). The inn does have a couple of portable DVD players they will lend you if available. There's also spotty cell phone service in this area b/c of the mountains. Great for quiet getaways, ski trips (with the focus on skiing and relaxing), basically, for enjoying Vermont. I'll post an update after my March stay.

The owners were wonderful and made you feel right at home -without the awkward feeling of obligation to chit-chat that can happen elsewhere. The place is about as adorable as it gets - without feeling kitschy. Each room is it's own little "cabin" and it feels as private as it can be - unlike a hotel. There's a free continental breakfast every morning and a sign up sheet for the next morning's hot breakfast (paid). As nervous as I was, the bed was comfortable and the room clean but still homey. The heating system worked perfectly, and we were totally comfortable even though one night was the first frost of the season! Everything about this place was charming and cozy. The only - ONLY - drawback I noticed (which wasn't even relevant to me since I'm still injured) was that it's not in a running-friendly location (no sidewalks just not highway but not regular road) and you'd have to drive a little to find a place to go. Downtown is freaking adorable and only like two miles away, so it's not too bad. I would go back in a heartbeat - and might have to make a trip in the summer to enjoy the back patio each room had! I would go back in a heartbeat - and might have to make a trip in the summer to enjoy the back patio! Rating Comfort: 5 Appearance: 5 Cleanliness: 4.8 (the carpets are a little old - and I'm admittedly being nitpicky here but only because I did a workout in the room which required being on the floor and subsequently paid more attention to it than usual) Service: 5 Location: 3 (review from: https://thereviewsnobodyaskedfor.wordpress.com/2025/11/02/north-shire-lodge-manchester-vermont/)

I have almost forgotten how wonderful it can be to stay in a great B&B, and this one certainly…read morerestored my passion for it -- and then some. From the street it looked like a charming New England B&B and there are plenty of those in the area. What sets this particular one apart, in my opinion, are the following: * At the back of this charming home is a beautifully crafted, lush garden with a hammock and benches placed in strategic nooks designed for optimal book-reading or daydreaming. At the top of the small hill is a pergola -- for more daydreaming, or if you are a bride-to-be looking for a romantic venue, this tops the cake. * The added bonus: you get your own entrance to a walking trail (please see picture below) that connects to a network of trails. It's beautiful now in the the summer time. I imagined how much more beautiful it will be in autumn. I must come back. * The breakfasts are to die for!! Imaginative and definitely gourmet. BTW, I had stayed in some expensive hotels before (the Four Seasons, etc.) -- in my opinion, this B&B's breakfast is better. Way, way better. On my first day, the second course was freshly-baked frittata with a side of steamed kale and zucchini -- picked from their garden. The cheese had just the right gooey to it, and the eggs were fluffy. Day 2: French-toasted croissant filled with creamy custard and drizzled with maple-orange syrup. Yum! * The Owner, Lynn is a wonderful person who had lived in Brattleboro for a very long time and knows its ins and outs -- from where to get great cheese to Brattleboro's unique home architectures. Engaging when a guest needed help and wonderfully welcoming. Yet, I always felt I had my privacy. She has mastered how to be a great host. BTW, the rooms are clean and well kept with a touch of history and modern amenities -- for example: I had a double shower head (a rain shower and a handheld). One last thing: In a hotel or an Airbnb, I always felt unsafe -- locked and double locked. In contrast, in the three days that I stayed here, I left my windows open at night to feel the cool evening breezes from the garden, and during the day, I left my door unlocked while I ate breakfast at the dining room. Priceless. I would come back for the breakfast, or the garden and walking trails, or the wonderfully warm, welcoming atmosphere -- better still, get all three. This one is definitely worth going back to again and again whenever I find myself looking for a great place to stay in Vermont. Highly recommended!

You are familiar with the phrase "put lipstick on a pig?" Sometimes you end up with a beautiful…read morepig, actually. Such is the case with the Brittany, which is an old-school 10-room motor lodge of the type that used to be operated as a Ma-and-Pa business by owners who lived above the office and did all the work themselves. Many of these hotels have disappeared, most that remain are of somewhat questionable quality. Not so the Brittany: it has been reasonably spruced up and operated on a streamlined basis, such that (seriously, to my surprise) I had a better two-day stay than I had at the last two Hampton Inns I've stayed at. As noted, this is a self-service motel (it's so lo-fi, I'm tempted to call it a lo-tel) where you get a text with your room code and number and you let yourself in. The rooms are basic but comfortable (this may be the only hotel I've ever stayed at that didn't have "hotel art" on the walls, which was honestly kind of a pleasant change of pace). There is a breakfast room of sorts -- "The Gathering Place" -- which is a converted former room that has a cold a la carte self-serve selection of things. (The hotel is refreshed mysteriously while guests are out and about; I was up at 5 AM and the coffee, according to the machine, had been made nine minutes earlier, but I never even saw an extra car in the parking lot. Stealthy!) I wish the Gathering Place had been open a bit later than it was, as I wanted to play one of the games I had spotted at breakfast, but using Elf labor probably requires they lock it up a bit earlier. Similarly, there's a nice fire pit with a mountain view and adirondack chairs out front, but it's a mystery as to how one might use the fire pit without logs and such available. (BYO Duraflame?) The setting is quite peaceful, and while I could hear stirrings from the room adjacent -- there's only so much you can do with old construction to soundproof it -- the other occupants were quite quiet. Around you is a whole lot of nothing, although it's just a few minutes south of Manchester center, so getting provisions is easy. No microwaves in the rooms, but there's a mini-fridge, stocked with some complimentary water. The TV was also the tiniest screen I've seen in a room since CRT TVs went by the wayside, but all I wanted to watch was the Red Sox game, and they had NESN, so I soldiered on. There are a few other nits I could pick, but the old-school full-sized bathtub was a pleasant surprise and a big upgrade over all the identical awful shower-only bathrooms in almost every hotel around these days, so I will gloss over those nits. One particular kudos on the amenities: there was herb tea with the self-serve coffee! THANK YOU! It's appreciated by those of us who like a nice tisane before going to sleep. So this isn't a five-star hotel like the Four Seasons, but it's a five star motel within its class - decent value for the money, well-operated, quiet. The quiet part is all I really want from a hotel stay (that and having a door that locks correctly) and the lovely surroundings and the very very low key breakfast were big plusses.

Our first visit to Windham Hill Inn was over 25 years ago for an autumn wedding anniversary…read moreget-away. We have returned about 10 times since then as the ambiance and atmosphere of both the Inn and the West Townshend VT area have 'called' to us. We have loved the historic feel of the farm, the amazing food and generous and down-home hospitality. One of the greatest charms has been the individual and very unique feel and character of each room - no two are even closely alike. The original farm house which housed the kitchen, bar, living room, and dining area also had some 12-14 guest rooms. There is a second building on the property, a 140 year old dairy barn that has been converted to an additional 8 guest rooms. It also has a shared large living room / lounge with fireplace and full kitchen in the lowest level. With wide wood plank floors, four poster beds, fireplaces and soaking tubs, these rooms range from intimate and 'cozy' to spacious and airy. The original farm-house building was struck by lightning in the spring of 2021 resulting in a serious fire that did significant damage. This main building remains closed and repairs are still being planned. The entire property closed for a while and finally reopened, but in a somewhat limited capacity. Only the rooms in the barn are currently available and they are open in a self-serve type manner. You can reserve your room online and then receive a door access code to your room on the day of your arrival. You can check yourself into the room using the door code, though during our recent visit in May/June 2024 the friendly and welcoming caretaker Jason was present to welcome us. The barn building and rooms, as well as the pool and local grounds are all being well cared for and are in very good condition. There is no on-site food service available which is still a little disappointing. The 4 star cuisine (included in the original room prices) was one of the great appeals of the Inn prior to the fire. Room rates are now much lower which should make this an even more appealing (read affordable) destination. You should consider bringing your own supply of snacks to tide you over between meals. There is a small mini-refrigerator in each room to keep bottles, cans and perishables fresh. There was no ice in the room yet Jason offered to get some for us if needed. There is a Keurig coffee machine in the common area which was stocked with some tea and bold coffee along with creamer / half and half. We took a couple small coolers with us, one in which to put a small bag of ice purchased at a local convenience store and the other to hold our crackers, cheese, nuts, and other snacks. Beds are large (Queen or King) with memory foam toppers - tending toward being a bit soft. There is a large TV in the room with many options and there is robust WiFi inside the building. There is no daily room / cleaning service currently. West Townshend is a very rural area with few dining options. If you are here on a Friday from mid-may to October (4:30--7:00 PM) you should consider visiting the West Townshend Country Store at the bottom of the hill. They have an outdoor pizza oven with picnic tables. People come from all over for a pizza with locally sourced toppings, to sip some beer or wine, listen to live music and shop the pop-up farm stands for locally made crafts and food items. If looking for a variety of dining options, you need to travel 25+ minutes back toward Brattleboro or out toward Stratton Mountain and Manchester. While the 150+ acres of the property do offer some hiking trails, there are also many other local places, a short drive away, to explore the outdoors. Our favorite go-to is Jamaica State Park and a 5.5 mile (total out and back) easy-to-moderate hike up to Hamilton Falls. If covered bridges are your thing - there are several within a short drive of the property. We truly love our visits to Windham Hill along with the beautiful sweeping vistas and very quiet and laid back ambiance. We look forward to returning here again, many more times. We hope the owners do consider renovating the original farm house and bringing back some of the additional appeal of the original operation.
