When we got to the property and went to check in, we were greeted first by Otis, a small fluffy doodle - and it only got better from there. The owners were wonderful and made you feel right at home -without the awkward feeling of obligation to chit-chat that can happen elsewhere. The place is about as adorable as it gets - without feeling kitschy. Each room is it's own little "cabin" and it feels as private as it can be - unlike a hotel. There's a free continental breakfast every morning and a sign up sheet for the next morning's hot breakfast (paid). As nervous as I was, the bed was comfortable and the room clean but still homey. The heating system worked perfectly, and we were totally comfortable even though one night was the first frost of the season! Everything about this place was charming and cozy. The only - ONLY - drawback I noticed (which wasn't even relevant to me since I'm still injured) was that it's not in a running-friendly location (no sidewalks just not highway but not regular road) and you'd have to drive a little to find a place to go. Downtown is freaking adorable and only like two miles away, so it's not too bad. I would go back in a heartbeat - and might have to make a trip in the summer to enjoy the back patio each room had! My best friend and I needed a little r and r from our busy lives. Well we couldn't have picked a better spot. The beds were so comfy. No matter what time of day there was always fantastic hot water. We stayed here in cabin 1 this past weekend for my friend's wedding. She and her husband had booked up the entire lodge for their wedding guests. I made my reservation back in March and am so glad I did. Kerry, who along with her husband Tim have been the innkeepers since the late 90's have done a wonderful job providing a cozy, clean, yet simple lodge. Rooms are not over the top with modern fixtures or amenities but everything is comfortable and just what you need for a weekend. The king sized bed was quite comfortable, the spacious wood drawers and additional closet area by the door provided space for our clothing. Hand crafted wooden lamps and other rustic touches made for a very cute accommodation. My favorite was the view from our back porch area with two plastic Adirondack chairs. While the road is to the left of the room the view of the mountains is breathtaking and the property belonging to the inn is big enough to take a short stroll and admire the views. Everyone was very friendly from the staff at the restaurant located on site where we had a delicious homemade breakfast (pancakes and an omelet). You simply sign up for a desired time slot in the morning and arrive a few minutes early to get your coffee and a table. The bar had plenty of decor that made it feel like you were in someone's home, and some outdoor tables for when the weather is right. Kerry provided printed directions for the Lye Brook Falls hiking trail. It was a 2 mile hike with beautiful views of the falls, and we enjoyed the hike and the wooden walking sticks were a lifesaver. Total for two nights was $ 371.80 which was substantially less than some of the other b & b's. I would go back for sure. Great place in a beautiful location. read more

This motel is pleasant, but some elements limit the comfort level. Sitting on a picturesque hill, sadly above a busy road, the view from each room is idyllic. Unique in that the facility features 14 small cabin rooms immediately side-by-side like an old-fashioned drive-in motel. Our room had been freshly, and smartly, appointed in modern colors with a country/Rockwell nostalgia. Though great care has been taken to modernize the room, there were some glaring and unrestful issues. The bed is terribly uncomfortable- not a minor issue in a motel. The toilet is the tiniest thing I've ever seen. When the neighboring room turns on the shower it sounds like a Lear jet taking off. Breakfast was included in the stay. We chose 'both' breakfast options of scrambled eggs with bacon and a delicious corn muffin. The second option was French toast with a maple-pecan butter and one sausage link. Both offerings were very tasty. The breakfast menu changes daily. Coffee is seemingly endless. Our only criticism about breakfast was that the coffee lacked flavor. The owners and staff were very friendly. It's clear they want your experience to be a good one. They even sell craft beer and wine in the lobby area which you can take to your room. The breakfast area is a pub in the evening that seems to host an impressive array of liquor and some pub food. Our plans couldn't accommodate a stop, but it looked inviting. I'm not sure we would return. Neither of us slept much- mostly tossing and turning on the old and most uncomfortable mattress. And though much of the stay was pleasant, this facility rates three stars in our experience. read more

I'm literally going to write a review everywhere about this place! My husband and I stayed at the lodge for three nights and it was the best place we've ever been. Rooms are very spacious, clean and cozy. Each room has a different interior. Great view and amenities. It's owned by a great couple (Tim & Kerry) who are on site 24/7. Very friendly and always ready to help. We had a chance to spend some time with Tim at the pub and he told us some very interesting stories about the lodge. Will definitely come back. Spent a weekend at the North Shire Lodge during a fly fishing guide trip. These accommodations were fantastic. Rooms and grounds are very clean, spotless bathrooms. Furniture is new-rustic and solid. Our room had HD TV with a built-in DVD player, medium sized fridge, microwave, and coffee pot. The lobby has some refreshments, and a zillion DVD's to borrow. Views of the mountains from the room are spectacular. Breakfasts were darn good too. You sign up at the front desk the day before choosing which option you want and a time, and when you arrive it is ready for you. They also do some continental breakfast too. The on-site pub and lounge area is cozy. Pub food was better than expected. The nachos are impressively large and a meal-in-itself. The owners/operators are friendly and very hospitable, and really give it some Vermont charm. I really have no complaints, and would stay here again. read more

For around $100 (on a holiday weekend!) you get you own cabin-like room, with exposed beams, cozy decor, and a view of the mountains and countryside...and a yummy breakfast is included! When you pull up to the Northshire Motel, it's really adorable. Seriously... there are fifteen separate cabin-like rooms, all painted red on the exterior, lined up next to each other. The room itself was clean and pretty basic, but that's what we were looking for. It was small, but not cramped for two people. Up until now, I'm thinking to myself, not a bad find at all. Sure, the room could be a little bigger, and it definitely resembles a motel rather than a hotel, but it's all good. Completely accurate according to the website, and Beth M. describes it perfectly. (I loved the beams and cabin-like interior, too!) Plus, we're only here for a night... We ended up in a room with two double beds versus a single king bed, because we went during the crazy "leaf-peeper" season, and they were completely booked. The beds are advertised as "extra-long" double beds. Um.... no. They are just regular doubles. When my 5'7" self can curl my toes over the end of the bed, it ain't king-sized. And it could definitely be that I'm spoiled by my Tempur-Pedic at home, but these beds were smooshy and totally uncomfortable. When my husband and I woke up the next morning, we were both in discomfort. A note for families, just know that they charge $20 extra per person over the allotted two guests. (And for families with really little ones... they don't have porta-cribs, so definitely plan accordingly!) So we paid a grand total of $170+ for a pretty small (albeit clean, cozy, with a great view of the beautiful area) room, with marshmallow-y beds, during the most expensive week of the year in Vermont. (Usually, their rates are approx. $99-$119/per night.) So overpriced for what it was. Bottom line... good lodging choice for singles/couples looking for clean, no frills accommodations. The room was very clean and comfortable and what a view from the sliding glass door down the valley. They also have discount tickets for the Hildene-Lincoln home tour, so ask for them. We spent a night at the North Shire Lodge during our New England road trip at the end of June. The motel was fine - very clean and well kept. There were DVDs to borrow which was nice since there wasn't much else to do in the evening. The lobby area had snacks and beverages which I guess you could purchase - it wasn't explained to us. There was also a bar area which I think was open to us, but again, it wasn't explained to us...we didn't feel welcome to ask questions so we just got our own snacks and beverages from the grocery store. Overall, the service we received was just kind of awkward and lacked the warm, welcoming feeling we got at most other places we stayed. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. We slept well in the king size bed. We enjoyed sitting in the lawn chairs outside our patio as the sun went down. The view was very beautiful. Breakfast seemed fresh and homemade and it was tasty. Not a lot of options, but what we got (blueberry pancakes for my husband and a frittata for me) was good. We loved sitting on the deck with the mountains in the distance. I imagine this place is much more lively during ski season - not much going on in the summer. No complaints, really - just not the ideal area for us personally. read more

If you are looking for the quintessential Vermont lodge experience, I highly recommend the North Shire Lodge. We stayed here for almost a week as we led up to our Vermont wedding in September. Everything from the wonderful and extremely comfortable accommodations, to the incredible breakfasts and friendly/very helpful staff made our experience the very best. Love this place! I booked a cabin online for New Years weekend. $109 on a holiday weekend is a great deal, especially for what you get here. We got there at around 8 pm and checked in at the front desk. They had super cheap tickets to Bromley for $49 that had no blackout dates, so we picked up a couple of those for New Years Day and headed back to our cabin. Sure the cabins are simple. This is not the St. Regis. But they had everything we needed. The view out of the back sliding glass door of our cabin was beautiful and the room was really clean. There was a tiny leak under the sink which the owner was so apologetic about but it was no big deal at all. We have had similar leaks at other hotels with no apology at all. While we were snowboarding the next day it was fixed and our rooms were made up. They have a ton of channels and DVD/VCR players in every cabin and a vast selection of DVDs and tapes to borrow for free. They also sell wine and beer in their bar which you can take back to your room. Their bar is super nice and we had a great time sitting by the fireplace playing board games and having nightcaps and dessert. The breakfast was great - oatmeal, cereal, bagels, lots of tea - and on the weekends the cinnamon buns were the BOMB! Maple flavored icing, yes please!! We will never stay anywhere else on our future trips to Stratton. read more

I stayed here in June of 2012 and could not say enough great things about the North Shire Lodge. From the moment we stepped into the office to check in to the moment we left (a day later than we planed- we couldn't bear to leave), my expectations were far exceeded. This is definitely the place to go to relax with your partner in a serene atmosphere. The innkeepers are so helpful and kind. The room was great, from the comfy bed with luxurious bedding to the sliders providing a breathtaking view. There are board games and DVDs in the office for guests' use free of charge. The DVD selection has to be commended- the selection is way better than any Redbox or Blockbuster! The food was amazing, really. We enjoyed dinner at the pub on our first night. We had the pub to ourselves, save for the innkeeper. He chatted with us about our plans and was able to make some hiking suggestions. Actually, he lent us some trail guide books to look through overnight to make our planning easier- how cool! Breakfast is included with your stay and is certainly a must do. When we went, the breakfast was posted the day before and you were asked to sign up at a specific time. Actually, I kind of liked this- it helped us plan our days. On one day, the breakfast was served with eggs and I just asked that they not make the eggs since I don't eat them- wasn't a problem. The next day, the breakfast was a frittata, but the innkeeper graciously offered me double of something else. I have to say, I loved the fresh fruit that came with each breakfast as well. Plus, the pub itself is a real treat to check out. All in all, the North Shire Lodge is very clearly lovingly cared for by kind Vermonters and is a special gem in a special part of New England. Chose to stay here a night because I used to live in Manchester VT years ago and wanted to visit old haunt. Was looking for a view in the morning of the Green Mountains and this place advertised that. We got in late at night so did not see that till the morning and was NOT disappointed. The individual cabins do have a gorgeous view of Mt Equinox provided by a set of large sliding doors. Room was comfortable and spacious. Area is quiet but still right on a main road. A big plus was a hot breakfast provided by the proprietor - no dinky continental. This was a terrific apple/cranberry sausage omelet with potatoes and coffee. What a great touch! And she (cook and proprietor) was a very amiable host. Breakfast was served in an intimate bar/lounge/restaurant that is for guests only. Will definitely make a return trip. read more
