As you pull in the driveway, you are actually seeing the backside of the main building.

I stayed here on President's Day weekend for less than $70 a night. I was looking for a cheap place to rest and break up my drive to Okemo Mountain, which is about 40 minutes from here. After pulling into a deserted parking lot and checking in, I breathed a sigh of relief when I pulled to the back of the building and discovered all of the cars! I entered my room and was pleasantly surprised. Spacious with character! A wooden slopes ceiling made it feel like Vermont. A big slider covered with drapes, it was bright in the morning once I opened them! The view of the parking lot was disappointing, but not a big deal. The bed was comfortably, the shower was okay ... Hot, slight lack in water pressure - but again, it for the job done. The place stayed nice and warm, and there is a small entry way before the bed area so you can keep your ski boots and stuff. On top of that, a tiny offering if to go items for breakfast when you check out. Location is great. Seconds from exit 4 off of 91, 10 minutes from Brattleboro and 40 from Okemo. Again, less than $70/ night on a holiday and scho vacation weekend. Closer to Okemo, prices were 2-10x that! And the room was good. I'd definitely stay again.

This review is solely for the lodging part of the Inn.... which was definitely *NOT* to my wife's liking. Before making the reservation, I consulted Yelp for reviews and took note of the Inn's many five star ratings for the restaurant part of the business. However, what was *not* clear to me was that the Putney Inn's lodging is a motel-like structure that is adjacent to the highly rated restaurant. According to Wikipedia, an Inn is "generally (an) establishment or building where travelers can seek lodging and, usually, food and drink." Yes, the Putney Inn provides all that... to a point. My wife's main complaint about our room was that it was musty and dated. The bathroom was also a bit moldy, probably due to inadequate ventilation. After our first night there, we discussed our options the next day over breakfast in the Inn. My wife's disposition at that point had soured to the point of no return... so we cancelled our stay there, packed up our belongings, and ventured down the road to Brattleboro & spent the remainder of parents weekend in a comfy hotel.

Nice updated rooms with fridge and microwave. Bathroom updated too!

Had a wonderful time at the Putney Inn- the staff was friendly and efficient and room was clean and updated nicely. Can't wait to return- great room for the price and lots to do a short drive away.

Simple basic room. Slight weird odor. Beds were ok, clean and hot shower. Not bad for the price.

Always love our stays - and leave looking forward to our next trip!!!!…read more Staying at the Chesterfield Inn Bed and Breakfast is never a disappointment. From the moment you walk in you are treated with warm hospitality by the owners Judy & Phil along with their staff. Something that stands out is the staff have been the same, which speaks for the owners. I can't say enough about how friendly, accommodating, and welcoming, everyone. We stayed in the main building, in rooms 17, 15, 12 & 14 all have cozy accommodations that are spacious and very clean. Room 15 was a two-room suite with a gas fireplace that we enjoyed in the evening. Room 14 also has a gas fireplaced that we enjoyed. Our favorite room is 12 on the first floor with a private balcony. All the rooms have very comfortable beds, and each room has a small refrigerator. Each of these rooms all had a view of the mountains in the background. Breakfast is included and is served in the lovely dining room. Thersa is very friendly and always ensures we have everything. Breakfast starts with fresh baked muffins and fruit. There is always a selection for breakfast from eggs, omelets and either French toast, waffles or pancakes. I have enjoyed different omelets, the Cinnamon French toast, waffles w/strawberries and blueberry pancakes served with warm maple syrup that comes from a local farm. In the afternoon you can relax by the fireplace in the parlor and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a variety of fresh baked cookies that are set up for your enjoyment. I highly recommend having dinner in the dining room that is right on the premises at least one night during your stay. The chef prepares great meals, and the menu has a very nice selection. Service has always been exceptional. There is a nice selection of wine, beer and specialty cocktails to choose from. I would highly recommend taking a ride to the "Vermont Country Store" during your stay. The store brought us back to our childhood with the nostalgic toys, rows of penny candy and the original tins of "Charlie chips and much more! Judy and Phil, along with all their staff, are very kind and caring. Thank you all very much for a lovely stay. See you on our next stay. Kathy & Ray Milford, CT

Overall, a lovely, no-frills hotel with great views of the Connecticut River…read more The place is modern and seems like it was recently built in the last decade or so. There are electrical outlets in the right places, light switches work like you think they do, everything functions the way it should, and plenty of place. Wifi was good enough for a week's worth of work meetings using Google Meet with no drops or other connectivity issues. The speed test came out on the very low end though, so don't expect to be downloading gigabytes of data in only seconds. The staff is very friendly and they generally seem to know what they're doing, and genuinely seem like they want to help you have a good stay. This hotel won't win any avant garde design awards. It's neither badly designed nor 'designer', but that's okay. I wasn't expecting luxury decor and architecture here. I do wish the rates were a little lower. I get that it's basically all river views, but on the other hand, aside from free coffee/tea 7am-10am in the lower floor, there are really no amenities. The gym is a small room with very minimal equipment. There isn't much of a lounge/lobby to speak of except for a couch and a couple of armchairs. There's no onsite restaurant, cafe, or counter-service spot. There is a convenience store a 3-minute walk away, but that's about it. The location on the river is great, but if you want to grab a bite to eat or explore, basically anything other than some hiking in the nearby woods, you need to drive there. So walkability is not great at this place. All that said, it was a nice 'retreat' from the world, where I could get some work done during the day, and have a clean and peaceful place to sleep at night after adventures out in Brattleboro and beyond. Bathrooms: Spacious, clean, and functional.

There was plenty of counterspace in the bathroom and a heat lamp. Plus, the shower had doors and not a curtain, thankfully. The bed was huge and comfortable. I loved waking up and staring out over the river. The balcony was great and the view of the Connecticut River is so pleasant and peaceful. I appreciate the mini fridge and the coffee maker. Making coffee and drinking it in bed while looking outside was an absolute highlight. Plus, they offer coffee in the mornings in a common area, with access to a deck, but I didn't check it out. I'd appreciate some hooks near the door, but other than that, the room was perfect. Staff is so friendly and helpful. Everyone was very welcoming. Riverside doesn't offer any type of food or sundries, but there is a convenience store next door that offers a good selection of snacks and drinks, so that is helpful. When visiting this area of New Hampshire or southern Vermont, Riverside is the place to stay.

From the street it looked like a charming New England B&B and there are plenty of those in the area. What sets this particular one apart, in my opinion, are the following: * At the back of this charming home is a beautifully crafted, lush garden with a hammock and benches placed in strategic nooks designed for optimal book-reading or daydreaming. At the top of the small hill is a pergola -- for more daydreaming, or if you are a bride-to-be looking for a romantic venue, this tops the cake. * The added bonus: you get your own entrance to a walking trail (please see picture below) that connects to a network of trails. It's beautiful now in the the summer time. I imagined how much more beautiful it will be in autumn. I must come back. * The breakfasts are to die for!! Imaginative and definitely gourmet. BTW, I had stayed in some expensive hotels before (the Four Seasons, etc.) -- in my opinion, this B&B's breakfast is better. Way, way better. On my first day, the second course was freshly-baked frittata with a side of steamed kale and zucchini -- picked from their garden. The cheese had just the right gooey to it, and the eggs were fluffy. Day 2: French-toasted croissant filled with creamy custard and drizzled with maple-orange syrup. Yum! * The Owner, Lynn is a wonderful person who had lived in Brattleboro for a very long time and knows its ins and outs -- from where to get great cheese to Brattleboro's unique home architectures. Engaging when a guest needed help and wonderfully welcoming. Yet, I always felt I had my privacy. She has mastered how to be a great host. BTW, the rooms are clean and well kept with a touch of history and modern amenities -- for example: I had a double shower head (a rain shower and a handheld). One last thing: In a hotel or an Airbnb, I always felt unsafe -- locked and double locked. In contrast, in the three days that I stayed here, I left my windows open at night to feel the cool evening breezes from the garden, and during the day, I left my door unlocked while I ate breakfast at the dining room. Priceless. I would come back for the breakfast, or the garden and walking trails, or the wonderfully warm, welcoming atmosphere -- better still, get all three. This one is definitely worth going back to again and again whenever I find myself looking for a great place to stay in Vermont. Highly recommended!

This Inn is going to change your life…read more Months ago, all I wanted to do is book a cozy, romantic, farm B&B on our first-time New England escape. (which the Inn certainly delivered) But now...I can't stop thinking about the powerful reality of farm-to-table living and Jackie's insistence that we finally pick up and read The Omnivore's Dilemma on the nightstand in every guest room. The many awards and accolades this place continuously receives year after year speaks for itself. Let me tell you about our experience: We booked the Mustard Room and since Jackie had other rooms available, she upgraded us to stay in the Rose Room. Bonus. The bed was fit for a king and after a long drive we snoozed until the wee hours enjoying pure luxury. If only we could have spent more time exploring the rooms which were decorated with rich detail. Have fun playing board games in the front room or pick up a cozy book in the library room. The bathroom feels like a spa and the sunroom is where you need to spend your time. Better yet...get outside and explore the grounds! Learn how to build your own compost, collect eggs, pick vegetables, play with the animals and so much more. Lola just comes out and gives lots of love :) The 3-course candlelight breakfast was delicious! On how many occasions have you enjoyed a beautiful flower with your meal as you chat with the cook about how many more blooms you should eat for a balanced meal? My first popover was steamy and tasty. Too bad I filled up on the complimentary cookies in the pantry that I couldn't eat more. But you know what? These cookies were the number one recipe in town. No, really. They won the local contest for best cookie. I think I ate like 10 cookies in one hour. You have to stock up on the town's NUMBER ONE cookie!! No shame! But the food really is incredible. All straight from the farm. All organic, all sustainable. The partnership with local farms and shops is inspiring. Jackie gave us great tips on things to do in town and the best way to enjoy hot cocoa at Burdick's. (half and half). Probably the best tips she gave us were life-changing and inspiring for our future farm to table efforts. One day, Jackie! One day! You really need to stay here and taken an apprenticeship on sustainable farming. I still find myself wondering how much Coco and Lola have grown (friendliest goats in the world). Directions were rather complicated as it is hidden on a very noice lot, behind a local grocery shopping center with only a small service road address near an interaction with a major road through town. You really cannot even see it from I-91 because of the trees. Remember, this is Vermont, land of big green trees. My best hint for those looking, even with a map, is to turn at the Hannaford Supermarket and take the service road to get behind it. Our room was more elegant than expected for a quick service hotel. Though the heat took some help in adjusting as the weather had turned suddenly cold, we got help from the desk and it turned out not to have been on the "heat" setting yet and then we had two warm cozy nights. It had better lighting than most and because of vision impairment, I need that. I know many people…read morelove this place, and I was so excited to go here but I need to be very honest in the ways they can improve and why 3 stars and not 5 stars from us. The booking and check in process was smooth and easy. The front staff were very friendly on the phone and in person. They walked us around to show us the grounds. Our room was exactly as we expected so no surprise there. It was ready when we arrived, clean and stocked with the basics (towel, soap). We didn't have high expectations for a new/updated room as the photos are exactly how the room was. No fancy frills but clean and absolutely fine to stay in. The beds are not that comfortable but fine. The wall paper in farm house 6 was peeling a bit and wear and tear around the unit was present but we did expect the room to be outdated and didn't have any issues over all with the room. The main reason for our 3 star is really based on food, amenities, and grounds. As for food, do not have high expectations as it's very basic. I would rate it 2 at best, but it's all inclusive and does feed the mass groups. Our waitress the first night was awful, we didn't eat for almost an hour. She told us she was rusty and not ready for the groups yet. Little weird, but I guess she was being honest. The other night/day team were much better and more competent. One odd thing we did notice, food is not in abundance when it's put out for guests to grab. Once something runs out, it runs out. I'm all for not wasting food, that's very important but we noticed often food would run out (cookies, appetizers, and other items to grab-go). For example, the cocktail adults evening, majority of the finger appetizers ran out. Another night, they had watermelon for dessert and it ran out. Ultimately, we can't say we didn't eat, we did, some items just would run out and that was it in terms of offerings. Another concern was the indoor pool, it was freezing. Like unable to swim at all -cold- cold. I would think summer time the pools outside are much better, but we didn't try those as it was too early in the season (April). The toys on the main lawn near the sand pit and volleyball area are all broken and worn out. One of the swings broken and missing. The kiddie barn is broken where the kids play. The boats near the lake are all broken and dingy. I understand this place is more about family legacy and farm life, which yes is special, but most things I found are falling apart around the main lawn area especially. Just in general, broken or not cared for. I am not expecting anything to be brand new or perfect but they're run down. We did most of the kid events and the play doh was all dried out and the crafts very limited. We felt there could've been a few more kid friendly events going on (maybe a movie, more crafts, outdoor music/games, outdoor events). The activity staff seemed really uninterested when it came to many of the events too which was unfortunate. Rather than really engage the kids they often stood around. These are the main reasons for our 3 star review. The concept and legacy idea for families is awesome, but the upkeep just isn't there and not as much engagement as we hoped. I love being outdoors, and for my kids to enjoy their time outside and farm life but they need to clean up a bit here. A few things we did love, to be fair and honest, the farm animals, Pony Ride, Easter egg hunt, and magic show. They were fun and engaging. Also, my kids absolutely loved trying to get eggs from the Hens (despite the limited number, but that's not East Hill's fault, that's just kiddos who claim them all and run away before others get a chance to grab one from the Hens). I also had a massage, that's not East Hill, but their outside vendor they use in their main lobby. It wasn't very good. The lady was nice but the chair massage was not relaxing or enjoyable. She barely massaged me. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this add on. This spot has so much incredible potential if they just maintained it better. Such special memories for families to create here. I get leaving the rooms nostalgic and maybe the farm areas, but the grounds, toys, arts and crafts and a few other areas could use some upkeep. Unfortunately that's why this is only a 3 star from our family.

The room still has that older feel to it which is okay because there was plenty of room for the two of us staying there. The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were a little too squishy for my liking. Pillows are always hit or miss when you travel though. There was a mini fridge for our food, and even a microwave. The bathroom was pretty standard. The only downfall from the bathroom was that the shower water pressure was a little iffy. It seemed to hit right next to the handle bar in the shower which made it a little tight in there trying to not hit the bar. But otherwise, the bathroom itself was pretty good. This hotel compared to some of the other ones in the area stood out above the rest in quality and if we ever go back to Brattleboro, we will definitely stay here again. The promise of a few relaxing days reduced the sting of resigning myself to paying $300/night for the "privilege" of a private bath; although all accommodations go for more than $200/night, only two of the six options have private baths. (The slightly less expensive option than mine was booked for my desired dates). Two are small one-room spaces that they advertise as cottages but seem more to be sheds. Neither have any plumbing and require using common facilities for guests in the main house. Reaching an innkeeper was rough to begin with. He then kept misstating my desired dates and told me that they could later adjust it. I let that go and hoped for the best. The breaking point was discussing my arrival time. I understood and respected that check in time was 3:00 pm. I truly did not think that ask to arrivie at 10 am on a Saturday morning in mid-September and happily either leaving my luggage in the car or leaving it behind the desk at the B n B until my room was ready and quietly enjoying the property was unreasonable. I was not counting on my room even being empty then but figured that it likely would be. The innkeeper got upset and told me that they still would have been serving breakfast (to no more then 12 guests, some of whom likeky already would have started their day) and could not even think about "assimilating" a guest at that time, He fully knew that I was not expecting any attention beyond a "hey" and maybe a handshake at that time. I told him to forget it and hung up; despite having my telephone number and e-mail, he made no effort at damage control even to the point of a quick apology that they did not want me there that early. My subsequent call to at least leave things on a friendlier note went unanswered. Subsequent conversations with a couple of travel agents, two friends who regularly travel, and a friend who is an award-winning travel agent confirmed my sense that my request was very reasonable, This is aside from the owners arguably charging at least 2x what they should. As an aside, I NEVER have had a hotel or inn keeper deny a request to show up early and amuse myself until my room was ready.

When…read moreI plan a trip I look for accommodation well within the 4-5 star range, especially outside of the country or an area that might be tricky to navigate. When I heard about Frog Meadow, what appealed to me was the fact that it is a rustic, mountain / wooded retreat. And that's what I wanted .... rustic relaxation. They offer some rooms w/ private baths - and some rooms that have a shared bath ( perfect if you are traveling with friends). I chose what they call The Brook Cottage. Set away from the main house, next to a babbling brook, this magical little cabin features a queen bed, electricity with ceiling fan and air conditioning ( I didn't need it at the end of June - the property sits on top of a mountain and the entire cottage has screened windows that provide an amazing cross breeze). Relaxing in this cottage surrounded by nature, is just transforming. I have not slept this good in months. Imagine the most comfy bed .... with great linen and blankets .... in an enchanted forest. I'm not kidding - it felt like that. True, it does not have a bathroom. But I knew this and realized that I would be "Glamping" and that's what this is!! The bathroom is located in the main house (which they show you during the tour when you arrive). It is spotlessly clean, and they offer big robes and lots of towels. This is a MENS retreat, so they jokingly suggest that in the night when you have to - just water the trees lol - otherwise the bathroom is there to use at all times. It worked out fine. They have a wood fired hot tub ... a swimming pond ..... patio to relax on and enjoy the evening. Also available is a beautiful great room / living room with cable tv if you want. Then there is breakfast. Served in a large chefs kitchen / dining room combo and butlers pantry. Fresh fruits and granola and yogurts, fresh juice tea and coffee to start. They prepare a different hot breakfast every day featuring local ingredients. The food was awesome. The hosts are a couple that built this property from scratch, and they love what they do. Attentive ( but not bothersome). This is their home and they enjoy sharing it, and are so accommodating. ** I mentioned that I had spotty internet in the cottage ... and they moved the routers right away to improve the signal etc ( it worked great after that). They could have easily shrugged and said it's the woods - sorry.... but they cared. Frog Meadow is amazing and I can't recommend it enough if you are looking for a quality, gay b&b. If you are looking for a fussy froo froo boring hotel then go there. If you want rustic and comfortable glamping in a true VT paradise - then go to Frog Meadow!!
