My husband and I had such a unique and enjoyable stay at this cool little inn. It is rich with history and one of the most unique and interesting hotels I have stayed at. Our first visit to Windham Hill Inn was over 25 years ago for an autumn wedding anniversary get-away. We have returned about 10 times since then as the ambiance and atmosphere of both the Inn and the West Townshend VT area have 'called' to us. We have loved the historic feel of the farm, the amazing food and generous and down-home hospitality. One of the greatest charms has been the individual and very unique feel and character of each room - no two are even closely alike. The original farm house which housed the kitchen, bar, living room, and dining area also had some 12-14 guest rooms. There is a second building on the property, a 140 year old dairy barn that has been converted to an additional 8 guest rooms. It also has a shared large living room / lounge with fireplace and full kitchen in the lowest level. With wide wood plank floors, four poster beds, fireplaces and soaking tubs, these rooms range from intimate and 'cozy' to spacious and airy. The original farm-house building was struck by lightning in the spring of 2021 resulting in a serious fire that did significant damage. This main building remains closed and repairs are still being planned. The entire property closed for a while and finally reopened, but in a somewhat limited capacity. Only the rooms in the barn are currently available and they are open in a self-serve type manner. You can reserve your room online and then receive a door access code to your room on the day of your arrival. You can check yourself into the room using the door code, though during our recent visit in May/June 2024 the friendly and welcoming caretaker Jason was present to welcome us. The barn building and rooms, as well as the pool and local grounds are all being well cared for and are in very good condition. There is no on-site food service available which is still a little disappointing. The 4 star cuisine (included in the original room prices) was one of the great appeals of the Inn prior to the fire. Room rates are now much lower which should make this an even more appealing (read affordable) destination. You should consider bringing your own supply of snacks to tide you over between meals. There is a small mini-refrigerator in each room to keep bottles, cans and perishables fresh. There was no ice in the room yet Jason offered to get some for us if needed. There is a Keurig coffee machine in the common area which was stocked with some tea and bold coffee along with creamer / half and half. We took a couple small coolers with us, one in which to put a small bag of ice purchased at a local convenience store and the other to hold our crackers, cheese, nuts, and other snacks. Beds are large (Queen or King) with memory foam toppers - tending toward being a bit soft. There is a large TV in the room with many options and there is robust WiFi inside the building. There is no daily room / cleaning service currently. West Townshend is a very rural area with few dining options. If you are here on a Friday from mid-may to October (4:30--7:00 PM) you should consider visiting the West Townshend Country Store at the bottom of the hill. They have an outdoor pizza oven with picnic tables. People come from all over for a pizza with locally sourced toppings, to sip some beer or wine, listen to live music and shop the pop-up farm stands for locally made crafts and food items. If looking for a variety of dining options, you need to travel 25+ minutes back toward Brattleboro or out toward Stratton Mountain and Manchester. While the 150+ acres of the property do offer some hiking trails, there are also many other local places, a short drive away, to explore the outdoors. Our favorite go-to is Jamaica State Park and a 5.5 mile (total out and back) easy-to-moderate hike up to Hamilton Falls. If covered bridges are your thing - there are several within a short drive of the property. We truly love our visits to Windham Hill along with the beautiful sweeping vistas and very quiet and laid back ambiance. We look forward to returning here again, many more times. We hope the owners do consider renovating the original farm house and bringing back some of the additional appeal of the original operation. read more

The Windham Hill Inn is simply one of the finest inns in Vermont. From rustically elegant guest rooms, to a warm and fresh dining room with superb food, to a quietly attentive staff, this property surpassed my expectations throughout my stay. I especially appreciated little touches like clearing my car of overnight snow, and sending me off with bottled water for the road. Turndown service and wonderful goodies at both check-in and during the cocktail hour just made me feel cared for in the right way. Highly recommended. To the few negative reviews: These must have been based on false expectations. If you're looking for a ubiquitous high end full service resort, this isn't it. My third time here, as perfect as always. Beautiful inn in a gorgeous setting. My boyfriend and I came up for his birthday. The in has lovely rooms to chose from, lots of delight and surprises, like chicanes and a note on your bed during turn down, tea cookies with afternoon tea, cheese board in the afternoon, beautiful mikes of hiking on the property with a river and waterfall, snowshoes to use, bathrobes and slippers in the room and fireplaces or gas stoves in each room. I called to make a restaurant reservation for an off peak Sunday night sunset. An older woman answered and asked if I was staying there. I told her no. She then proceeded to tell me yes they were open but it was going to be very very busy, they wouldn't be able to provide proper service, and started giving me recommendations where I was staying, including a place that has closed down for good. I couldn't believe it. Either close your restaurant to the public or keep it open. This woman did not give a very favorable or polite impression or feeling. Beautiful little spot tucked away just outside of the Green Mountains. Less than a thirty minute drive to Mt. Snow. We went for an evening, staying in the Pied-a-Terre room. We ate both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant in the inn. The food was amazing. My boyfriend said it was one of the best filets he ever had, my scallops were fantastic and the service was so, so great! We had Lisa waiting on us for both meals and she was so fun and welcoming. We'll come back just to see her again! The room itself was beautifully rustic, with a fireplace and views looking onto the neighboring mountains. I love this place! Very frustrating ‼ We have been waiting on a refund for a payment in May for a reservation we had to cancel due to COVID-19 travel restrictions-- numerous requests and promises from inn keeper that owner has been advised. I loved this quaint inn tucked away in the hills of Vermont. The grounds are spectacular, with peaceful gardens and lovely views you could just watch for hours. The interior is beautiful... every sitting room, dining room, and lounge is perfectly decorated and welcoming. I enjoyed the little touches of tea/coffee and cookies served 3-5 and the complimentary cheeses served during happy hour. The restaurant was amazing! We had dinner and breakfast there and every course of each meal was quite amazing. We stayed in Kate's room which was clean and simple. I think the pool and deck could use a few enhancements and the spa could use more services and available times for the price you are paying. Otherwise an amazing property. read more

Why would you frame a lie? Windham Hill Inn is an extremely high-amenity inn deep in Vermont. We stayed there over President's Day weekend and skied at Stratton (about 45 minutes away). The innkeeper was extremely friendly, and the room was nice. It was odd that there was a framed note explaining that heat and AC were controlled for our room via the floorboard heat system (all rooms are named, and the note was customized for ours). It didn't actually work, though, and when we inquired, the innkeeper said there was actually a thermostat for central heat. Why would they have an incorrect note about the heat? Why would they frame a lie? The inn itself was wonderful and the complimentary breakfast was in line with the best I've had at a five star hotel. The service was extremely conscientious. So, why 3 stars? We're early 30s and the other clients were all in their 50s or acted like characters from SNL's Lowered Expectations skits. I'm sure we were the only ones skiing and other guests' (very quiet) conversations were about antiquing or perhaps taking a short walk (but not on the snowless cross-country skiing trails -- apparently, they're "too steep"). The dining room was always very quiet, even when full, and we found ourselves talking in hushed tones despite ourselves. The walls are very thin. The guests in the next room knocked on our door at exactly 11pm to ask us to stop talking because it was keeping them up and was "inappropriate, given the hour." It was a very nice stay, but probably more appropriate for the retired set than an active younger couple. read more

We stayed at the Inn over 3 nights in July. We picked this B&B because we wanted to get out of the city for a few days for some peace and quiet and we got exactly what we were looking for. The property is just BEAUTIFUL in the summer. Tour the flower gardens and the chef's herb/fruit/veg garden. Everything is in bloom! A run/hike through the trails led us to a small waterfall - a must-do! Just be sure to bring bug spray for the hike. Our room was small but very appropriately (and tastefully) decorated for a country inn. We were not concerned about the size of the room since we were out exploring during the day anyway (golf at Stratton Mountain, shopping in Manchester and exploring the old village of Grafton). We did not experience a problem with the air conditioning in the room, so did not ask about controlling the temperature. We only bumped into a few other guests (at breakfast and dinner). Its true that they are generally older than us (we are late 20s), but it did not concern us as we were there for some peace and quiet anyway. Staff was very attentive! Katia, the inn keeper, is a pleasure. We were at the bar chatting with Dan, our sommelier, about a random topic. When we retired to our room that night, we found a print out of additional information on the topic slipped under our door!! The staff was super helpful in arranging a tee-time for us at Stratton also. The food was absolutely delicious. Do NOT miss breakfast!! The included breakfast is unlike any other hotel breakfast - fantastic and attentive servers, fresh ingredients from the garden outside and delicious options that change daily. Dinner at the restaurant is equally as superb.... a little pricey if you include a bottle of wine but worth every penny ! If you are expecting hustle and bustle and nightlife, this property is not for you. But if you are looking to get away from it all, beautiful scenery, attentive staff and delicious food included, Windham hill is for you! read more

We just had the most exquisite experience at this lovely, rare place. I can't even begin to say how perfect our stay at Windham Hill Inn was. From the moment we arrived, Rachel and staff made us feel welcome and spoiled on every level. we've traveled quite a bit and this was honestly one of the best places we've ever stayed. Every detail was take care of: beautiful views, privacy, serenity, fresh cookies, thick, thirsty towels, spotlessly clean, comfy bed, scrumptious breakfast - several amazing and included-in-stay courses... Our dinner, overseen by the erudite and attentive Alexander, was delicious as well, and a very luxurious and romantic experience. Oh and the POOL. Just the perfect temperature and overlooking a stunning mountain vista. And I want to mention Rachel again - she is a real gem for the inn. She was completely attentive while never being intrusive. SO sweet -- and funny, too. Just the best manager for this special place. read more

Idyllic get away. If you are looking for a quiet place with nice people, and great amenities to read books and just mellow for a few days. This is ideal. If you want a party scene go elsewhere. We walked over to Up The Hill yoga (5 minutes) and had a great yoga session in between an excellent breakfast and lunch. There is also great xc-skiing places nearby. Our favorite is Viking. And as an added benefit, they actually have a charging station for our Tesla. All in all a perfect get-away weekend. read more

I recently spent 3 nights at Windham Hill Inn and was extremely happy with the experience. The Inn is lovely - tastefully decorated and cozy and has gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. Every staff member was friendly, personable, and went above and beyond to make sure my and my friend's needs were taken care of from morning to night. I stayed in the Henry Hobbs room which has a soaking tub that I used two days in a row, both times in the afternoon. Previous guests have mentioned low water pressure and a $50 fee. Well, I had absolutely no problem with the water pressure either day and as for the $50 fee, that is totally optional. You can OPT to have a "butler drawn bath" with added oils, scents, etc. for $50, but it is an OPTION. If you don't want the butler drawn bath, then run the bath yourself at no additional charge. That's what I did. It was wonderful and, for me, a luxury to have a soak in the afternoon after (an attempt at) snowshoeing on the grounds. The bar officially opens at 5:30 but they'll open it earlier if you ask, which my friend and I did, all three days. A yummy cheese platter is set out at 5:30. We ate at the restaurant all 3 nights - excellent food and service. Dan and Katja recommended wines, all of which we enjoyed. A lot. I had a ton of wine questions and Dan (wine/restaurant manager) very patiently and kindly answered them all and recommended some of his favorites. He's a great resource and graciously shared his time and knowledge with us. As for the property, I can't speak much to the gardens, etc. which were covered in 3 feet of snow, but what I did see was beautiful. Like a winter wonderland, and I loved it. And, again, the views are amazing. My room was on the first floor near the reception area, just to the left of the entrance of the Inn and I had no problem with noise. Having said that, you DO hear things...you WILL hear things...the house was built in the 1800s, so it's not going to be sound proof. That, to me, is part of the charm of staying at ANY older property. If you keep your expectations in check, you'll be fine (that applies to just about everything in life, though). As for the other guests, there was a pretty mixed bag when I was there..20s up to 70s, I guess. I'm not sure why it matters, though. I don't book myself into a secluded inn in Vermont for the party atmosphere anyway. I do it to relax and to get away from city (New York City) noise and city stress, and that is EXACTLY what I got at the Windham Hill Inn. "Very enjoyable stay, again..." My wife and I stayed at the Windham Hill Inn in March when they were having a special. We chose the Meadowlook guest room which we had tried to book in the past when we stayed at this inn and finally were able to secure this room. The room is very nicely decorated and very comfortable. The room overlooks the meadow hence the name Meadowlook. There is a large soaking tub, large bath with an over sized shower. The price for our room without a special deal would be on the high side but that's what you would have to expect for an elegant quality inn. Our stay as in the past was relaxing. Katja Matthews the innkeeper and her staff are top notch. Katja being from Germany provides the inn with the type of European attention to detail one would expect. The staff is very attentive and someone is always near the front entrance to assist guests. Our meals were unique and delicious. I had the broiled salmon over risotto and my wife had the filet minion both of which were made to perfection. The wine list is very broad and can accommodate anyone's taste for fine wines. There were two choices for breakfast pancakes or Eggs Benedict. We chose the latter. There is nothing like a country breakfast with local ingredients. For those considering the Windham Hill Inn please visit the website which has a lot of very good information, pricing, photos, specials, etc. If you have questions call Katja and either she or one of the friendly staff will answer your questions. Sometimes I read reviews were people complain about the price of the room the food and worse write a lengthy review eight months later. I normally just write those reviews off since most people can't remember what they had to eat from two nights ago. In summing up my wife and I will definitely return to the Windham Hill Inn in the future for another relaxing stay to view the sunrise out the window of the Meadowlook room. read more

My wife and I visited Windham Hill Inn with a group of friends. I am giving it 5 stars for these reasons: 1) Details: the inn is managed incredibly well. From the guest's perspective every detail is considered and there are no shortcuts in the quality. This includes very good beds, very clean rooms, extra blankets in the closet, coffee/tea and cookies in the entrance, and music to listen to in your room while enjoying the fire place. We arrived at midnight and there was a fresh fruit plate waiting in our room. They anticipated every need and we got to enjoy it from the minute we arrived. 2) Food- they have a great chef, creative dishes, and fresh and flavorful ingredients. Throughout the day they offer well selected vermont cheeses, fresh baked cookies, coffee, tea. 3) Charm- the rooms are in an old barn house and a large main house. The main house rooms, the guest rooms, and the "barn" are cleverly decorated, providing a nice overall atmosphere. Great views and a crackling fireplace make it very settling. 4) Hospitality- our experience was very good. Every staff member had a personal sense of responsibility in their job. I suspect this is the result of good management by inkeeper Katja Mathews, who's team works seamlessly to create a warm and comfortable setting. 5) Location- it is about 25 minutes driving distance from 2 great skii mountains. If you do not ski, there are a number of other things to do. If you do not want to do those things, you can get a good book and read by the fire all day as some guests did. I do not know what everything sees in this place, there was no safe for valuables, old dumpy furniture, and what I think is not correct, no one on staff over night at all in case a guest is ill, or a fire. We had to carry most of our luggage in ourselves as they have no carts, and our room could not be locked to the outside, but they supplied a broom pole to put in the slider. I could understand if this were a 2 star resort but it is far from it, and not cheap. We will not return. read more

To me, this was a quintessential Vermont inn experience. Yes, the furniture is dated but it has the worn feel of being in the country. Everything was clean and the staff and the food were incredibly wonderful. Gardens were outstanding, grounds for hiking are accessible, apples for picking are outside your door, and Adirondack chairs are available to sit in for sunrise/sunset. It's not a hotel, so yes, there are times things are unattended, but I liked the privacy, frankly. Plus, having tea, coffee and treats available in both the barn and the main house added an extra bit of hospitality. The innkeeper, Katya, knows your name from Day 1 and is gracious and accommodating. Not sure what some other reviewers were expecting, but to me this is what I signed up for. The Inn is very nice as such places go...the real highlights being the location and gardens. A very beautiful spot for R&R. The restaurant, while very good, is not up to the standards we've found at other Relais & Chateau. The wine list is impressive and very reasonably priced. My wife's venison was the best I've ever tasted, my pheasant tough and nearly inedible. The signature Grand Marnier soufflé was nice, but overpowered by the caramel sauce. The service was outstanding...fun and attentive. As far as the accommodations go: nicely decorated, but no reefer and water pressure was totally unacceptable. I'll be seeking a concession for this when I check out. A dribbling shower for a supposedly nice B&B is appalling. Oh, they also wanted $50 to fill your tub ( can't figure how they can even accomplish this with the low water flow!) and provide salts and such. Never visited a place where this wasn't an include amenity! read more
