My family of 4 had a truly great experience at the Hartness House! As we were planning our stay, the staff (Nina) was communicative and accommodating...they answered my questions and helped us pick the perfect sized room for our family. the room was so clean and comfortable, we all slept great (much needed after a full day skiing/snowboarding at Okemo, 25 min away). The mansion is just incredible, full of antiques and luxury-level charm. Tyler took us on a fascinating tour of the underground tunnels, he painted a crystal clear image for us of what it was like to live during a time where innovation and leadership shaped history. There is just so much to see and explore! The home is close to some great restaurants...we highly recommend! read more

We booked this hotel, guided by the lovely photos shown on their website, as a part of a special 50th Wedding Anniversary road trip. But looks can be extremely deceiving; the room we ended up staying in was a far cry from the beautiful photos (at least 90% of them) shown in their advertising and promos. What we found (eventually, after asking for directions to the room 3 times) was a small room in the lower level, sparsely furnished with a lack of decor - meaning totally bare walls with a screw or two where photos should have been hung - rows of empty bookshelves lining one wall, an old springy, squeaky bed, perpetual, noisy "drip, drip, tap in wall all night long," spiders in the bathroom. This contrasts sharply to the beautiful photos shown in photos previously published. When I asked at the front desk about our room I was told, "Oh, you are in one of our Standard Rooms." If this is standard...it is the lowest standard of any room we've stayed in - in memory. Hard to control heat, weeds growing between window frame and inside window, bathroom door peeling - falling apart. (Would have eaten my deposit but simply could not find anything else within any reasonable driving distance.) Staff was pleasant and congenial. Restaurant was fine and fairly priced. But beyond those things, this was like staying in a motel in a squalid "film noir." And, while noted in some places as a B&B....sorry, Charlie, this is not a genuine B&B. Historic, fascinating story and underground tunnels....but not a place I would recommend staying. (And finding our room....another misguided adventure. Let's just say I know what the roof looks like...even though we stayed in the virtual "basement".) read more

I was saddened to see another of piece Springfield's history has turned tawdry. I was under the impression that the inn had been purchased and completely redone. My room was in the hotel area and obviously had a fresh coat of paint, no mini frig, no coffee pot, and home made curtains....no style and the tub shower in bath had cracks and the lever on tub was corroded.... Had a lovely stay and dinner at the Hartness House Inn! Delicious food, clean accommodations and the friendliest servers I've ever encountered! I loved my brisket sandwich and the two aps my table split - the sun dried tomato flatbread and the kale salad. Everything was fresh tasting and prepared beautifully! Highly recommend :) Side note: I encountered a similar experience as a previous reviewer (actually stayed in the same room it looks like), so I would confirm with the Inn that you want a room in the mansion if you're looking for that quaint BnB experience and not a more bare bones accommodation. We just had a five star dinner at The Veranda at the Hartness House. We started with delicious crab cakes and Brussel sprouts appetizer, followed by Cedar Planed Salmon with a mustard maple glaze, and a brined pork chop in a spiced apple sauce. New owners/Innskeepers as of Dec 2014. There's only two hotels for the town of Springfield and if you can afford to pay a bit more, the Hartness House is well worth the money. I had biz in Springfield and would only spend 1 night there and found a little discount from Expedia as I'd booked my flights with them. The newest wing is like a typical motel room and the cheapest. BUT... you want to stay in one of the mansions rooms/suites. Luckily, I ran into the owner/mgr, Jules and he agreed to upgrade me to the room of my choice for a reasonable upgrade fee. Of course I grabbed the finest room in the house, the James Hartness suite... The suite has a fireplace in the living room, the bathroom while a little small has a new jacuzzi tub... a bit out of character, but I enjoyed the tub nonetheless. The bathroom door has a couple of all cotton terry robes which I also appreciated. Free continental breakfast of coffee and pastries. 4/5/15 On Weekends, They've upgraded to a full buffet breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, scrambled eggs, potatoes, french toast/pancakes, sausage/bacon, coffee, OJ... Very nice! During the winter, the restaurant is not open every day and I was unlucky in that it was closed that day so I had to order delivery food, which was surprisingly good... but that's another review. 4/5/15 Same chef but the Russian menu is gone and a more contemporary menu. I had the filet mignon entree with garlic mashed potatoes and winter squash. All good. I'd heard the town has been wired with fiber optic cable and can get 1gbs internet speed, so I was a bit disappointed that the free wifi wasn't great... They need an upgrade to it... No question, stay in the main house in the mansion and you will feel like an old money billionaire... if you are an aviation fan, you could stay in the aptly name room where Charles Lindberg stayed. Staying here is money well spent!!! 4/5/15 ~ I'm here for a weeks stay and I love it! There's plenty of meeting rooms if you wish to conduct business meetings and some of the rooms are large enough to have small business meetings or interviews when you need more privacy. Staying at the Hartness House seems more like staying at a friend's house than a hotel stay. This comes with its unique pros and cons of course, though I do believe the Pros heavily outweigh the cons. CONS: I'll start with the cons, as I believe they deserve to be mentioned so you know what you're going into: though I do want to stress that the positives make these nitpicks virtually obsolete. For one, the house is very old, and while this delivers tons of charm, the guest rooms could use a bit of modern updating to make them more warm and inviting. The couch especially had flat cushions and a slipcover that needed replacing. The TV was an older model as well, and therefore was large and looked very out of place in the otherwise Victorian-looking room. Replacing the TV with a newer flat-panel would have opened up the room and been much more discrete. The carpets also could use replacing; they were clean they just looked very dated and worn. I loved the Victorian charm, however, I would ditch the fake flowers. They collect dust and going without or providing fresh flowers when guests are booked would have gone a long way to make the room feel more cozy and less like grandmother's house. Lastly, the jets in our jetted tub didn't work (At least I couldn't get them to). I didn't even bother to complain about them, though, as I honestly just didn't care - but they should have been tested before a guest comes to stay in my opinion. PROS: The house is beautiful. It was very clean. I believe people confuse "Old" and "dirty" in many reviews so I want to point out that the room was very clean and the housekeeping did a good job of keeping it that way. While there were a few "worn" places in the room carpet or wallpaper; cleanliness wasn't an issue. The linens were crisp and the bed was fairly comfortable, especially for a small bed and breakfast venue. The room size (once again, especially for a small B&B venue) were spacious and charming. There were romantic books and poems to poke through, and plenty of closet space which allowed you put up all your clothes and luggage and really let the room breathe and feel like home. Our dinner at their in-house restaurant was delicious, as was the impressive in-room breakfast service we got everyday. But, the thing that really made out stay shine was the hospitality and personal attention you got as a guest. The staff was amazingly friendly and personable. They seemed genuinely interested in you and making sure your stay was memorable. We got the "Deluxe Elope" and I would recommend it a thousand times over for anyone looking for a small but intimate venue. Especially considering the cost - it's an outstanding value. We came in to elope from out of state and they took care of EVERYTHING. They helped up get our license, gave us suggestions for sight-seeing and eating out, provided the officiant, provided flowers (we even got some say on the color, even with less than a day's notice), our wedding toast, dinner, cake, and photography. The photographer was so friendly and professional. He had a great eye for attractive shots, let us do a few of our own ideas, and we didn't feel rushed at all. I also loved how he had some great suggestions for poses, locations, angles...everything. Not only that, but the photos were ready for us the next morning! Since this was an out-of-state elope, none of our family and friends were there so having good photography was very important for us and I was thrilled with the result. This place is a Jekyl and (mostly) Hyde story. We stayed in a king room in the "hotel' section for 2 nights. CONS- no grab bars in the shower, toilet seat lower than death valley for the handicapped, no amenities in the bathroom (not even soap on the sink), didn't clean the room after the 1st of 2 nights, and the room furniture looked like it came from a yard sale. PROs- nice coffee/sweets set-up in the morning in a beautiful sitting room in the main inn, which was a decent hike from our room. At their prices, a certified loser! read more

We stayed at the Harkness House, skiied at Okemo, and ate dinner in the restaurant. It's a small, informal restaurant with interesting options, great friendly service, nice beer list and delicious food. I tried the special Wagyu (type of beef) Burger, which was delicious! read more

Arrived 3:30pm and the front door was locked. Eventually a woman came to the door with a huge dog, to let me in and check me in. One of the reasons I chose this place was for their in house Russian restaurant which sounded perfect...unfortunately they are closed except Friday and Saturday nights. The room was OK...needed some updating and repairs. The mattress was strange, and the pillows were horrible...did not get much sleep. Came down for breakfast at 8am, and guess what???...nobody was around, no smell of coffee...nobody to even get a receipt from... Will never stay here again, and I suggest that you all do the same. read more

My friends live in town and I was up visiting for foliage. Since we didn't feel like cooking we decided to eat out. After googling a bunch of places, we saw the on line menu featuring some great sounding Russian food, including several vegetarian options which work out great as one of us is a vegetarian. We also thought the two pages of vodka martinis on the menu would keep us happy during the meal. A phone call got us a reservation no problem, and a long hour later we were there, greeted by Maxx the black lab and seated. The server gave us menus, told us about the new ravioli which is also vegetarian, and then said she'd give us a minute. We asked about the martini list and were informed that they don't serve alcohol any longer but we could have brought our own. This is where disappointment came in. We were actually looking forward to those martinis. Had we known we wouldn't have wasted our time, or would have brought our own adult beverages. I guess that is one of the reasons that the place was empty on a foliage weekend. We opted to go to Black Rock down the road which was crowded but still no wait, and had a great meal with a glass of wine. If you don't serve alcohol, take the two pages of drinks off your website, remove the bar menu off your website and let people know prior to arrival that it is byob. I wonder how fresh the food would have been...no customers so everything is frozen is my guess, but for $24 do I want frozen chicken kiev? Nahh I can buy a box of it from the freezer section and microwave my own for much much less. read more

Beautiful old property with a very interesting past. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They seem to really love the property and the history that goes along with it. There's some cool underground rooms and tunnels which they are very happy to show you. The breakfast was also quite good for a continental breakfast. The only issue was the bed in the room we had. The room seemed newly updated in one of the newer additions but the bed was old and too uncomfortable for two large adults. They seem to be in the process of renovating and I really hope they continue to help keep this historical gem thriving. read more

Extremely picky about ahi tuna but the seared ahi was second to none (and I have tried a significant amount). How about artisan pizzas, ribs, tacos... hell you name it, every dish on the menu is going to be best-in-class. That said, also a wonderful selection of local wines, beers, ciders, and spirits if you're just looking for a pint, snifter or snort. The staff is friendly and the chef is a one-of-a-kind artist with a flair for fusion but a sincere dedication to craft. Wonderful stay at the Inn. Came up for a ski trip with my son. The Inn is very pleasant. We stayed in the back. Our room was not fancy but clean and comfortable. We ate both nights at the Tavern and had two great meals. My son is a vegetarian and the chef, Ben, was very fantastic making off-menu accommodations. The Tavern itself is very pleasant with wood planking and exposed stone. Lisa the bartender/waitress makes a terrific Old Fashion and was extremely outgoing. All the staff were pleasant. The property is a about 1/2 hour from Okemo. We had a great time. read more

My husband and I were in awe at the beauty of the Hartness House the moment we stepped inside. The decor was gorgeous- displaying the true atmosphere of a historical structure. Each room was unique complete with a design scheme from this era. In addition to the house itself, the staff was nothing but courteous and helpful. Traveled to New England with a friend who grew up near the Hartness House. We were welcomed with warmth by the innkeeper and taken to a lovely double room on the 3rd floor. The place is old and well-loved. I admired the detail and thoughtful care given to every room in the place. We explored the grounds in the morning and met Max, the wonder dog. Breakfast was cooked to order and delicious. The innkeeper was gracious and kind. We topped off our visit when we encountered two deer in the roadway as we were leaving the property. We stumbled upon this place while passing through Vermont and couldn't have been happier. It was a slow weeknight so they upgraded our room free of charge to an adorable little Victorian suite with a Christmas tree in the room. We had dinner in the tavern which had delicious food and an impressive cocktail list. Our free breakfast was the most surprising. Typically free breakfasts are mediocre as well all know, this one was made to order with multiple options with local ingredients. Booked for two weeks. Advertised 24-hour coffee and breakfast as you like it---NOT. Had no TV or wi-fi for three days, sheets were never changed after 2 weeks, fresh towels occasionally, no glasses/cups in bathroom to rinse mouth after brushing last 5 days of stay, bed was made occasionally, no phones in room, had to "special request" a dresser to put my clothes along with hangars to hang up our dress clothes, floor was never swept, and upon check-out was billed two nights at a higher rate than quoted even though we were locked into rates. Maybe good for a one or two night stay but not for a long period of time. Would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Dinner at the new tavern is very good. The restaurant had been mediocre for a number of years. It's great to see its quality dramatically improved under new management. Prices are also much more reasonable than in the past. The menu changes regularly and is fairly diverse. Braised kale salad is great. The pesto pizza is very good, and spicy. I recommend the pork belly tacos if they come back on the menu. Pickled vegetables are a house specialty and are in a number of dishes. read more

We eloped with a Hartness House Package, and our expectations were surpassed! It was just the 2 of us, and our 2 friends who drove in for the wedding, and dinner on Easter Sunday. Our 2 nights here were terrific. I recommend the full package, because the spa is amazing. We did it the morning of our service, and were so relaxed. The breakfast was terrific, and our wedding dinner was wonderful. We flew in from the west coast, and were not disappointed with anything. Alex, Alla, and the staff made us feel very welcome, and very special. The JP, Steve was very sentimental, and personalized the service. We could not have asked for a better experience. We will definately return for a visit. You should know they are gay friendly, and gay welcoming. Wonderful people, amazing place - perfect experience. Extremely romantic. After two nights staying here for a small wedding. I can say the staff and rooms are very nice. The feeling of this B&B is very warm and cozy.. However please bring allergy medicine w you. A large group of us stayed here for a wedding and all of us had allergy problems because of the older rooms having lots of dust and mold in the rooms. Honestly I've never seen a B&B that doesn't have common amenities available to guests. I realize that this is not a hotel however the pricing of lodging is far more expensive than hotels. FYI do not use local salons here in this town. We used a local salon for hair and makeup for a wedding.. Disaster. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for a LONG time, as we stayed at the Hartness House during Christmas of 2008, but as far as I'm concerned, better late than never, because I MUST honor this place. My husband and I are huge on Christmas and really prefer to spend it with family and "traditions," however, that particular year we could not afford to fly to California (where our family was) from NYC (where we lived at the time), so we decided to do something within New England. Cue the Hartness House. I found it by researching highly rated B&B's in the general area. I hadn't been to Vermont since I was in high school, but remembered how much I had loved it, so thought it would be a great time for us both. You know how sometimes you get so excited for something you think you might be ruining it for yourself because it probabley won't live up to your expectations? Well, this was one of those times where the experience exceeded our expectations. It wasn't that a bunch of super swank things happened; it was the total package experience of pure relaxation. It's so hard to find that feeling now adays and it only exists in a few places anymore in America. When we first showed up, the Christmas splendor hit us full force. A beautiful snowfall blanketed the exterior, and huge icicles hung from all of the over hangs. As we entered the thick front door with a Christmas Wreath, we were greeted with lovely decorated trees and all kinds of other festive decorations, not cheesey and hideous, but ones that totally fit into the feeling of the house. As we checked in, we were in "New York Mode" to the max, speaking quickly and being intense. The woman at the front desk was so chill that as she walked away to grab our room key we looked at each other and said, "Damn, we're being a*&holes! She's giving us the clue here that it's time to relax!" She took us to our room and let us know that the morning coffee, which is brewed at 6am, was right next to our door. HELLO?? Thank you. Our room was complete tasteful New England Country goodness and it made a person relax immediately. Thereafter, we went into bliss mode. We kind of glided from one experience to the next, time began to have no meaning, and those 3 short days felt like a small lifetime. We had lovely breakfasts, lovely dinners, lovely walks in the forrest. We read in the parlor, watched The Nutcracker and Christmas in Yosemite on the television in our comfortable room. They even give a super fun tour of the subterranian lair and telescope built by the namesake, James Hartness! The service, the food, the decor, the enviornment, the whole thing was such a fantastic experience that we still bring it up all the time AND are planning on spending a week there next year. For two people who were at first worried it wouldn't feel like Christmas because it was just the two of us and we were not used to that, I tell you to anyone who is listening: magic can happen when you least expect it! Beautifully renovated. Unfortunately, the rest of the Hartness house is outdated and very musty, which is a weird welcoming to a rather nice restaurant. Food is solid, not overly inventive, but solid. Desserts are boasted to be homemade, but not really worth the talk. Service is pretty obviously undertrained and the weakest part of the experience. We couldn't have asked for more kindness, teamwork and willingness to accomodate our lifestyle and vegan diet to make our wedding nothing less than perfect. Long before we found Hartness House Inn, we looked at a couple other Inns; only to learn they were not interested in a lesbian couple holding a wedding at their facility, nor were they all that willing to create a vegan menu. The main rooms were fantastic(and a friend could even bring her dog and stay in the cottage rooms)and the entire place had a romantic and relaxed ambiance. The Chef went above and beyond in creating a delicious vegan menu for our guests on our wedding day, as well as for our breakfasts. Their incredible job has won them not only our gratitude and admiration, but the loyalty of some of our guests who told us when they visit again, they will stay at Hartness House. The grounds are great to hike on and there is a nice little brook behind the house only a few steps away which is worth seeing. The food is regular tavern/bar fare. We stayed at the Hartness House for Valentine's. Rooms are clean but a little small. Staff were so helpful and friendly! The new spa is really nice, it has a jacuzzi, saunas, tanning booth, massage chairs and a nice lounge. Dinner was delicious but a bit pricey. We were given a tour but unfortunately it was too cold to open the lens of the telescope. But it was still pretty cool to see the underground tunnels and their little museum. My husband and I were married here in 2007. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect wedding! The room we stayed in was amazing! The food was amazing!! The atmosphere of this place is so relaxed and romantic we couldn't help but enjoy ourselves. Our parents and siblings met us up there and stayed in rooms in the wings at the back of the house. The room we rented out for the ceremony and dinner was gorgeous. It had a beautiful stone fireplace perfect for pictures. We were married in February and everything was covered in a fresh coat of snow adding to the beauty of our wedding photos. I can only imagine the beauty of this place during the other seasons. I hope to return here someday soon. If you are looking for a beautiful, romantic place to have a small intimate wedding this is the place!
