Nicely made - but very uncomfortable bed.
    Denny K.

We booked this hotel, guided by the lovely photos shown on their website, as a part of a special 50th Wedding Anniversary road trip. But looks can be extremely deceiving; the room we ended up staying in was a far cry from the beautiful photos (at least 90% of them) shown in their advertising and promos. What we found (eventually, after asking for directions to the room 3 times) was a small room in the lower level, sparsely furnished with a lack of decor - meaning totally bare walls with a screw or two where photos should have been hung - rows of empty bookshelves lining one wall, an old springy, squeaky bed, perpetual, noisy "drip, drip, tap in wall all night long," spiders in the bathroom. This contrasts sharply to the beautiful photos shown in photos previously published. When I asked at the front desk about our room I was told, "Oh, you are in one of our Standard Rooms." If this is standard...it is the lowest standard of any room we've stayed in - in memory. Hard to control heat, weeds growing between window frame and inside window, bathroom door peeling - falling apart. (Would have eaten my deposit but simply could not find anything else within any reasonable driving distance.) Staff was pleasant and congenial. Restaurant was fine and fairly priced. But beyond those things, this was like staying in a motel in a squalid "film noir." And, while noted in some places as a B&B....sorry, Charlie, this is not a genuine B&B. Historic, fascinating story and underground tunnels....but not a place I would recommend staying. (And finding our room....another misguided adventure. Let's just say I know what the roof looks like...even though we stayed in the virtual "basement".)

I was saddened to see another of piece Springfield's history has turned tawdry. I was under the impression that the inn had been purchased and completely redone. My room was in the hotel area and obviously had a fresh coat of paint, no mini frig, no coffee pot, and home made curtains....no style and the tub shower in bath had cracks and the lever on tub was corroded.... Not going back.

Had a lovely stay and dinner at the Hartness House Inn! Delicious food, clean accommodations and the friendliest servers I've ever encountered! I loved my brisket sandwich and the two aps my table split - the sun dried tomato flatbread and the kale salad. Everything was fresh tasting and prepared beautifully! Highly recommend :) Side note: I encountered a similar experience as a previous reviewer (actually stayed in the same room it looks like), so I would confirm with the Inn that you want a room in the mansion if you're looking for that quaint BnB experience and not a more bare bones accommodation. Also, the chocolate croissants at breakfast are exceptional.

We just had a five star dinner at The Veranda at the Hartness House. We started with delicious crab cakes and Brussel sprouts appetizer, followed by Cedar Planed Salmon with a mustard maple glaze, and a brined pork chop in a spiced apple sauce. We topped it off with maple creme brûlée and peach cobbler. The service was impeccable! Highly recommend!

New owners/Innskeepers as of Dec 2014. There's only two hotels for the town of Springfield and if you can afford to pay a bit more, the Hartness House is well worth the money. I had biz in Springfield and would only spend 1 night there and found a little discount from Expedia as I'd booked my flights with them. The newest wing is like a typical motel room and the cheapest. BUT... you want to stay in one of the mansions rooms/suites. Luckily, I ran into the owner/mgr, Jules and he agreed to upgrade me to the room of my choice for a reasonable upgrade fee. Of course I grabbed the finest room in the house, the James Hartness suite... The suite has a fireplace in the living room, the bathroom while a little small has a new jacuzzi tub... a bit out of character, but I enjoyed the tub nonetheless. The bathroom door has a couple of all cotton terry robes which I also appreciated. Free continental breakfast of coffee and pastries. 4/5/15 On Weekends, They've upgraded to a full buffet breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, scrambled eggs, potatoes, french toast/pancakes, sausage/bacon, coffee, OJ... Very nice! During the winter, the restaurant is not open every day and I was unlucky in that it was closed that day so I had to order delivery food, which was surprisingly good... but that's another review. 4/5/15 Same chef but the Russian menu is gone and a more contemporary menu. I had the filet mignon entree with garlic mashed potatoes and winter squash. All good. I'd heard the town has been wired with fiber optic cable and can get 1gbs internet speed, so I was a bit disappointed that the free wifi wasn't great... They need an upgrade to it... No question, stay in the main house in the mansion and you will feel like an old money billionaire... if you are an aviation fan, you could stay in the aptly name room where Charles Lindberg stayed. Staying here is money well spent!!! 4/5/15 ~ I'm here for a weeks stay and I love it! There's plenty of meeting rooms if you wish to conduct business meetings and some of the rooms are large enough to have small business meetings or interviews when you need more privacy. Call to check for days and hours the dining room is open before planning to come up for dinner. Definitely the most beautiful and romantic dining room in town. Fantastic new Innskeepers Jules and Brad, you will definitely want to meet them

This is a beautiful romantic cozy antique steam punk paradise! Can't say enough praise to the staff primarily a young girl that took care of all our needs with care and finesse. We were the only couple last night and had the whole mansion to ourselves. Huge bedroom California king bed window in shower. Plus you are surrounded in antique luxury from a governors mansion who is also an astronomer so u go on a tour of tunnels under the house and see his projects. Educational and romantic perfect vacation place

Staying at the Hartness House seems more like staying at a friend's house than a hotel stay. This comes with its unique pros and cons of course, though I do believe the Pros heavily outweigh the cons. CONS: I'll start with the cons, as I believe they deserve to be mentioned so you know what you're going into: though I do want to stress that the positives make these nitpicks virtually obsolete. For one, the house is very old, and while this delivers tons of charm, the guest rooms could use a bit of modern updating to make them more warm and inviting. The couch especially had flat cushions and a slipcover that needed replacing. The TV was an older model as well, and therefore was large and looked very out of place in the otherwise Victorian-looking room. Replacing the TV with a newer flat-panel would have opened up the room and been much more discrete. The carpets also could use replacing; they were clean they just looked very dated and worn. I loved the Victorian charm, however, I would ditch the fake flowers. They collect dust and going without or providing fresh flowers when guests are booked would have gone a long way to make the room feel more cozy and less like grandmother's house. Lastly, the jets in our jetted tub didn't work (At least I couldn't get them to). I didn't even bother to complain about them, though, as I honestly just didn't care - but they should have been tested before a guest comes to stay in my opinion. PROS: The house is beautiful. It was very clean. I believe people confuse "Old" and "dirty" in many reviews so I want to point out that the room was very clean and the housekeeping did a good job of keeping it that way. While there were a few "worn" places in the room carpet or wallpaper; cleanliness wasn't an issue. The linens were crisp and the bed was fairly comfortable, especially for a small bed and breakfast venue. The room size (once again, especially for a small B&B venue) were spacious and charming. There were romantic books and poems to poke through, and plenty of closet space which allowed you put up all your clothes and luggage and really let the room breathe and feel like home. Our dinner at their in-house restaurant was delicious, as was the impressive in-room breakfast service we got everyday. But, the thing that really made out stay shine was the hospitality and personal attention you got as a guest. The staff was amazingly friendly and personable. They seemed genuinely interested in you and making sure your stay was memorable. We got the "Deluxe Elope" and I would recommend it a thousand times over for anyone looking for a small but intimate venue. Especially considering the cost - it's an outstanding value. We came in to elope from out of state and they took care of EVERYTHING. They helped up get our license, gave us suggestions for sight-seeing and eating out, provided the officiant, provided flowers (we even got some say on the color, even with less than a day's notice), our wedding toast, dinner, cake, and photography. The photographer was so friendly and professional. He had a great eye for attractive shots, let us do a few of our own ideas, and we didn't feel rushed at all. I also loved how he had some great suggestions for poses, locations, angles...everything. Not only that, but the photos were ready for us the next morning! Since this was an out-of-state elope, none of our family and friends were there so having good photography was very important for us and I was thrilled with the result. If you're considering eloping in Vermont, please consider the Harness House. They will make your day feel very special :)

My husband and I were in awe at the beauty of the Hartness House the moment we stepped inside. The decor was gorgeous- displaying the true atmosphere of a historical structure. Each room was unique complete with a design scheme from this era. In addition to the house itself, the staff was nothing but courteous and helpful. We had a chance to speak with the head chef Nick and couldn't be more proud of all the hard work put into the Hartness House. Breakfast was our favorite part of our stay... the blueberry pancakes were amazing!!

It was much more money. I figured I'd get a better rate because my husband was a disabled. I went to the actual website for the hotel itself in Springfield and the people that answer the phone and I don't remember her name right now, but she was amazing so helpful. Help me get straightened out help me to rebook the reservation, but then now is fast forward to yesterday. I came into the hotel. I was greeted very nicely by this beautiful smell in the hallway Like a pine tree Christmas tree good thing which I didn't know was an air freshener I thought at first was the Christmas tree in the hallway.. The girl at the front desk, Emily she was just filling in for her mother, which I didn't know that at first, but she was very professional very outgoing greet you. Good evening welcome when you come in the door explain who I was what I needed she ends up being able to give me a room like two doors from the actual entrance at the back at the handicap entrance. So my John didn't have to walk too far since you don't been sitting for almost 3 hours in the car to get here. It was tough so then we got the wrong. I got settled came down and asked her several questions she had no problem the girl that was doing the cleanup she her name was Donna. She was working and it was her birthday like hello don't even take your birthday off wow I then talk with her for a bit to explain some things about the hotel. Everything is fresh clean bright it's beautiful. I'm sure it looks just as good when it's not decorated for Christmas as it does today it's all decorated people, Christmas, decorations and trees and bows and this fake present under the tree. Everything was just amazing so far so now I'm having breakfast and I got to sleep late for the first time, I can't say how long but breakfast has it starts off with a waffle station then it has four different kinds of fresh juice then it has a cooler that has chocolate milk in it. It has fresh yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, regular sticks of cheese then they have cold cereal. They have hot cereal. They have fresh yogurt that you can make buffets with they have things and stuff they have three kinds of fresh fruit. They have a bread station that has bagels and English muffins and toast in it with peanut butter and jelly butter Have a microwave for heating. Then their hot station has bacon and sausage, and it also has cheese omelettes and scrambled eggs this morning if two kinds of fresh coffee, hot water for coconut tea. I mean, if you can't find something for breakfast here to eat then you have a problem I had a fresh buttermilk waffle with bacon. Everything looks delicious. Looks amazing fresh I mean this has been absolutely my number one experience in hotel and the best Western of all the times I've stayed I really enjoyed this one if they were all cookie cutter, I would be doing great. I think at one time we did stay at one of the one in Pennsylvania, and that was fantastic as well, but it's nice. You can go more than one and more than one state and it's just the same. I will definitely be back here again up here for a friendly family party tonight, but we're staying till tomorrow so we can have a real short brief vacation and get some sleep without eating anyways and being bothered and stuff. it's also literally a stone stove from the highway exit you cannot go wrong by coming off and using this as a rest stop is definitely something you should come to check out is not till 12 so I mean you have no excuse not to lay in bed. Take your time get some breakfast go back and relax and everything is just top-notch here. Also forgot to put up top all the employees address so professional in the beautiful royal blue best western shirts, nice pair of black pants and sneakers also into a swimming pool, which I'm sure we won't get time to use this time as we're getting super late last night and my husband was very tired and pain and today we have the party, but I will definitely come back and try the pool next time

Yes, it's an inn so small and a bit older, but that just adds to the cozy charm and makes it a perfect northern getaway. Breakfast is included and made fresh. You choose your options ahead of time, which was great. The TV in the room is small, but it fits the cozy vibe. There are plenty of books and games in the lobby and extra room for entertainment. One small note, I'd recommend staying in an upstairs room, as some of the floorboards creak and I imagine the sound carries to rooms below. Since we were only there for a short time, we mainly interacted with Peter at the bar and he was fantastic. He even added something to my drink to make it sweeter. They offered us a seat at the bar while they prepared out table and I had an amazing smoked old fashioned. We were seated shortly and from there on, the evening just kept exceeding expectations. Our waiter was really exceptional. I can't recall his name but he made the night extra special. We started with spicy tuna bites where we great and a perfect size for an appetizer. I had the surf and turf special which was really great. I sampled some of my husband's NY Strip and it was also very nice. We tried to save room for dessert and I had an exceptional peanut butter bar. That was awesome. My better half had a pistachio brulee cheesecake. It had a good flavor but I thought the texture was too soft, but to be honest is was good. It just didn't meet the same level as everything else. The atmosphere the whole night was wonderful. The place as low ceilings and there were a lot of tables so I thought it might be too loud but it was perfect. The hospitality oozed warmth, every person I interacted with was lovely and we left with big smiles on our faces. There are a number of parking lots; both days we arrived early so we had a choice of the 2 free lots near the base area. Equipment drop off is easy and the walk from the lots is not too far. The biggest issue is to get through the resort to the base lodge entails quite a lot of stairs. The lodge itself is what you would expect, nothing fancy but more than serviceable. The restrooms and changing areas are downstairs, which is made a bit harder by the angled staircase, which can be a bit challenging when you are in ski boots. The changing areas have seasonal lockers, rental lockers and free racks for bag storage which is appreciated. At the base lodge you have 2 lifts that take you up the beginner area and allows you to access the rest of the mountain. The main lift for the main face is a high speed 6 pack with ubble covers for the chairs. From the top you can make it to the other areas of the mountain. We skied all of the areas of the resort the Main Face, the South Face, Solitude and Jackson Gore. Okemo is great for cruising the Blues and groomed Black runs. Even though the conditions were icy and not everything was open Okemo provides plenty of variety and skiing. I really enjoy skiing at Okemo, the mountain is pretty easy to navigate. It's so pretty and the landscaping and flowers are wonderful. We loved the pool and hot tub as well. It's very peaceful and relaxing. The Castle building really is gorgeous as well. The staff at the hotel are very nice and want to be helpful. We used the spa and it was okay. The gym is large and well equipped. I had a massage which was okay. The room I was in had a window which faced the road and the traffic noise was louder than the spa music that was playing so didn't lend itself to relaxing. The massage was over $200 so I didn't think it was a great value because I didn't really feel fully relaxed after it. Ask for a treatment room on the pool side of the building if possible. We ate at the restaurant and it was pretty good. Prices were high but seemed to be about on par with another meal we had in the area. Service was nice. Our room was okay...very spacious but the lack of outlets is tough to manage in 2025 with so many devices to charge. I understand the building is very old so I get that there aren't a lot of plugs. My Verizon connectivity was terrible in the whole area and due to a wide-scale outage, Wifi was not working when I was there, which was problematic because I had to take a business call. That and a couple of other issues with our room led to us leaving early to find someplace that had a working Wifi connection but I have to say the staff were helpful and understanding. It was the off season and I think maybe they were a little short staffed but I get that it's tough for businesses these days. Overall, this place was fine and it is very beautiful.

The setting is beautiful, and the property has a lot of history -- over 125 years old and once belonging to Governor Fletcher, with only 12 rooms. Unfortunately, our stay was very disappointing. We checked into Room #9 and right away noticed issues. The bathroom door lock was broken, and I ended up getting stuck inside until my husband let me out. There were also many dead bees on the floor when we arrived, and by the next morning we saw live bees in the room. Since the windows didn't open, I had no choice but to kill them. Service was limited -- no housekeeping even when requested, and the hotel felt very understaffed (likely because it was off-season). The spa treatment was okay, but there was only one massage therapist available. The pool area was relaxing, but that was the highlight. The bee problem got so bad that we cut our stay short. Although we had booked for three nights, we left after just a day and a half, checking out at 9 p.m. on the second night because it became unmanageable. Staff sent a technician, but the only solution offered was to spray, and the bees kept coming back. The environment and historic charm are wonderful, but the property isn't being maintained to the level it deserves. Sadly, I don't see myself returning.

It was wonderful. I am a clean freak and I couldn't believe that walking around on the floor in barefeet, my feet remained clean. Everything was immaculate. The owner is very friendly and helpful. There are thoughtful extras everywhere - huge variety of continental breakfast items in the office for guests, basket of free treats in the room, good-size fridge and real freezer in the room, super comfortable beds and bedding, pure white hefty towels, and big room and closet and drawers. The price was incredible and we were only a half hour from Okemo. We highly recommend the American Grill Restaurant and the Red Slate Restaurant. The food was delicious, staff and chefs amazing, and the prices like pre-pandemic. Couldn't believe it.

I discovered Snowdon Chalet by chance when coming up to see a World Cup race at Killington. Jen, the owner, was amazing. I had to leave early in the morning to catch the race, so she made a lunch bag with a fresh muffin, snack bars, a box of juice, and a yogurt- and had it waiting for me when I got out the door at 6:00am. The motel has a truly hip, retro architectural vibe. The rooms are all updated, always clean, and stocked with goodies. Jen and her husband are very accommodating- the customer service here is like no where else. Very family friendly and they truly care that you're enjoying your stay at the motel and finding great things to do in the area. We've priced other places in the area. But you really get a vastly better experience and value at Snowdon Chalet.

Breakfast was delicious, too. The Inn is literally right on the Ottauquechee River...and the Historic Lincoln covered bridge (one of which Woodstock is known for) was 100 yards from the Inn itself. We sat one night in Adirondack chairs on the river's edge while sipping wine we bought and had a splendid evening. It's about a 10 minute drive to beautiful downtown Woodstock. Highly recommended!
