This is the best Indian food I've had in Baltimore! The new location has a beautiful dining room and fancy bar. There is an extensive list of exclusive cocktail creations and a sizable wine and beer list. Get the salmon! You won't regret it. Absolutely delicious. While some of their staff is green and still learning the timing of working a dining room, the older Indian woman and a few others seem very invested and are hands-on to make sure everything runs smoothly. She made sure we got out the door in a timely fashion. We appreciate her efforts. We've lived in the neighborhood for years and the new space for indigma is very beautiful. Have been here twice for the lunch buffet since they reopened. They have some of the nicest and most attentive staff/owner I've ever encountered. The food is great across the board. Fresh naan, great tandoori chicken, and loads of veggie options. When I was there this Sunday they had a lamb dish (rare for an Indian buffet) that was phenomenal. What I love most is that they aren't afraid to add heat. So many places have the heat level of every dish at 0 and it's boring. I appreciate that they trust their customers. Also their selection of chutneys, pickles, and raitas really compliment their offerings--and if they sold their onion chutney by the jar I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've been one of the unfortunate ones who have somehow missed coming in for a taste since this beautiful establishment has reopened 2 blocks from it's former site. Thankfully I found my way in tonight. This is hands down the best food I've had in months. It crossed all boundaries and was simply delicious. Wow I ate in here and was not impressed and frankly turned off by what happened at the end. :( The ambience is nice but wow the waiter was WAY pushy. He was an older gentleman who clearly only cared about the dough. One of my 4 friends was driving and he attempted to convince her into drinking for about 3 long, awkward minutes...as she repeatedly stated she didn't want a drink. Tactless. The food was good. Chicken tikka for $16 good? Nope. Also the check was super sketchy. One of our friends ordered 2 dishes so was going to pay the tip. We put our credit cards down on a check that looked normal . He brings back receipts and had charged our cards an additional 20% for tip! He goes "oh, by the way i added tip." That is only standard for parties of 6 or greater...which we were NOT. I got butter chicken and it was INCREDIBLY salty - I had to gulp down water the whole time I was eating it. With that said, the rice was delicious, they gave me a little cup of rice Pudding and some small chutneys for free that were absolutely delicious, maybe the best onion chutney I've had from an Indian place. The lunch buffet at Indigma is great. It allows you to sample many of their dishes for a very low price (b/w 8-12$ if I recall correctly). I got the meat option and she got the veggie. My lamb was very tender but in retrospect I probably should've gotten the veggie too (no slander to their meat, I'm just not that much of a carnivore usually) She had some amazing coconut milk dish that blew my taste buds away. The Kheer at dessert was also the best kheer I've had in 4 years. Tip: After the first round (yes, I'm a fatty, but I did run 12 miles before I went) if you want more you can tell you waiter which specific mini-dishes you'd like to have again, so you don't have to eat all 8 if you don't like all 8. I've heard amazing things about their dinner, but it looks a little pricey, so I think it's just so great that their lunch is so affordable. read more

How disappointing. You can see Demetrios' review for more specifics of the evening, but here's the breakdown: - First thing's first: The dishes were MEDIOCRE. My Aloo was watery and bland while my partner's Lamb dish was tough and inconsistently cooked. - Took them an HOUR to prepare a 2-curry Take Out Order (after they told us originally 15 minutes and after their ordering service CALLED US to tell us to come pick it up), so I wasted 40 minutes waiting for the order AT the restaurant while the hostess kept saying "it's almost done, it's almost done." - When I spoke to the owner, he was very unapologetic, first blaming the hostess and then blaming their ordering service. After 5 minutes of (very calmly and nicely) expressing my disappointment, he turned to his hostess and said, "Give her a rice pudding to make her happy." Now, I understand that Friday nights can be busy (although their dining room was not even close to capacity), but I was offended by the unapologetic and dismissive manner. His comment that "You have to understand - most people pick up their orders late" -- really? I have to understand that? Because last time I checked, I was the CUSTOMER and I was doing THEM a favor by picking up the food when I was told to, by waiting patiently and calmly for nearly 40 minutes while my partner drove around in CIRCLES, and by allowing him the opportunity to not lose a customer. Solid lunch buffet, and it's decently priced for the amount of food you get. The place smells amazing! I love that they have numerous types of curries, pampadam, samosas, and a lovely salad bar. Their kale salad is delicious! They do a good job of "massaging" the kale until it's tender. The most recent time that I was there, I really liked their goat and fish curries. Indigma catered my dinner party providing all of the vittles, from mango, avacado and chana salad with its silken flavours, peppery mango shrimp, seabass, salmon in mixed vegetables, malai kofta and spicy vegetable biriani. Each dish was well seasoned and delicious by itself as well as together. My family enjoyed it all having second servings; the gathering was a success in no small part because of Indigma's excellent cuisine. I recommend this restaurant and its catering. I would call this the best Indian fusion restaurant in Baltimore! The couple that owns the place always makes you feel at home and go out of their way to give you great dining experience. Fantastic meal on a slow Sunday evening, only a couple other tables when by all rights this place should be packed! I should preface this by saying we've eaten at some of the best Indian restaurants in the US (in DC and NYC) and Indigma is darn close (and a heck of a lot more convenient!). The space is pleasant and inviting, my drink (Taj-tini - cognac, Grand Marnier and key lime juice) was prepared perfectly and the service was prompt and attentive. We ordered 3 small plates, each better than the next: the Gobi Manchurian (crispy cauliflower doused with a dark red sweet/spicy sauce), crab naan crisp (a round of naan sliced in quarters slathered with an Indian Fusion version of crab dip - delicious and refined), and the avocado-mango chaat (with chick peas, formed in a stack kind of like a vegetarian version of a seafood stack - chaat is a broad term for a type of Indian street food and this is an interesting take on it). I wish I had taken pictures of these plates! We shared a main of spice-rubbed and pan-roasted whole pompano (not on the menu but available "for regulars," which we hope to become) - we had asked for something so amazing that he wished more people would order because it's so good, and it was! The fish was delicate, moist and absorbed well the fragrant spices. Pompano has one main center spine of bones so it's fairly easy to eat one side then lift out the bones and eat the other side... but it was so good I couldn't stop myself from picking up the bonier pieces and nibbling at the tender flaky meat. I think Sunday is "free dessert" night but we opted instead for their "award winning" cardamom creme brulee and it was absolutely worth paying for - the design painted on the plate in berry and chocolate sauces alone was amazing! The restaurant was nearly empty, thank goodness, so our lateness was not an issue. Waited in the bar area while the rest of the party arrived, enjoyed a delicious cold Taj Mahal beer, large format, which I shared with another person. Seated in lovely, high-ceiling room with view of the Washington Monument and the church. Beautiful. The dining area filled up quickly after we were seated, and the noise level immediately rose. For five of us seated at a round table, we all had to lean in to hear each other. Even my twenty-something children, who are used to shouting at each other at crowded noisy bars, commented on how hard it was to have a conversation. Lovely menu, clear explanations. Server was accommodating, sweet, lovely. She detected immediately that we were only ordering vegetarian entrees. We asked for her suggestions and she confirmed that all were good choices. The building appears to be an old elegant rowhouse that has been restored and updated. Rest rooms are upstairs, and one can imagine what the house must have been like in its heyday. We had garlic naan and rosemary naan, Gobi Manchurian (cauliflower, tomato, peppers, onion, soy), BENGAN MIRCHI ALOO (eggplant, green pepper, potato, ginger, cumin), SHIITAKE MATTAR (shiitake mushroom, green peas, soy, madras curry sprinkle, tomato), BENGAN MAKHANWALA (Indian eggplant, capsicum, tomato, onion, coriander, cream), and SAAG PANEER (Indian cheese, spinach, cardomom, clove, garlic). Every dish was delicious, yet muted. Spice levels extremely tame, and lacking the exploding vivid flavors that I normally associate with Indian food. We figured that the spicing was toned down considerably for the gringo crowd, and who knows if we would have liked the food had it been more vividly flavored. I for one wanted vivid, I may not represent the general dining public. Service was good. We did not wait long for anything, or at least not too long. When we ordered another beer it came quickly, and the food came out within a reasonable time. It could be that because we were seated on the early side we experienced no lags in service time. Total bill for 5 people, including 3 large format beers and 2 mango lassis, was about $140 including tax/tip, so that's $28/person. Not terrible but not cheap for a lovely elegant evening. My daughter lives in Mt. Vernon and there are many places for interesting food nearby and not far away. My #1 objective in this situation is to enjoy time with my family, and the acoustics made this very difficult. The food was good. Indigma is OPEN!!! That being said, obviously it doesn't hide my excitement very well. I needed someone to cater my sister's baby shower, and what better way to sent her into motherhood than with delicious Indian Fusion?! From the beginning to the end, it was once again such a pleasure to deal with Tony. I contacted him with my budget and he came up with the perfect menu for me. And came in under budget - how many times can you say that about anyone?! I needed something that was all vegetarian with vegan options and he revised the menu for me twice, without me even giving him an idea of what I wanted except for "Um...finger foods?". What I ended up with was Chana Masala, Veggie Cutlets, Veggie Kabobs in an insanely amazing sauce, samosas that stayed crispy even through the 45 minute drive, and enough naan and papad bread to feed an army, along with 2 different kinds of sauces. I picked up the food and it was hot and ready exactly when I needed it. They will deliver for an extra fee, as well as provide utensils and serving platters (also extra fee). If you're looking to hold an elegant and impressive dinner or lunch, order catering from Indigma. Everyone will love you for it and leave happy ;) read more

Wow. Thank you, Tony for owning and operating Indigma - hands down the BEST food I've had since moving to this city 2 weeks ago - definitely the best ethnic food. We carried out a spicy lamb dish, eggplant ki subsi, jalapeno garlic naan, and some avocado pakoras from there last night and it was AMAZING. As in, tasted home-cooked type of amazing. The chef made all the dishes just as we asked - very (but not absurdly) spicy. Everything was perfect. OK, and I'm not going to hold back about the avocado pakoras. We got it only for the reason that it's not everyday that you see avocado at an Indian restaurant, much less in pakora form. It was...different. I personally will be sticking with the more traditional types of pakoras. Will I revisiting? Yeah. Probably, umm... every week. It's THAT good. Indigma, you are officially my go-to Indian Food Eatery of choice while I live up here...and I eat a lot of Indian food. read more

Living in Mount Vernon, there's a huge number of Indian places to try. If that weren't the case I might give Indigma 4 stars, but I think they earned the 5th by virtue of being just a little bit better overall that Akbar, Kumari, Mughal Garden, etc. Indigma edges these guys out on all fronts: decor/atmosphere, food quality, variety, and service. On top of that, their take-out lunch buffet is $5 per pound. That's an insanely good deal no matter how you slice it. I think the best strategy with Indigma is trying to go outside of your comfort zone. They offer more adventurous dishes, so it's kind of a shame to go there just to have whatever staple dish you're always used to. You'll be rewarded in a big way for trying something new here! read more

Delicious food, value and service. Hip dining atmosphere. I'd eagerly come back anytime! We went for the lunch buffet. Their new lunch menu has three buffet options available: vegetarian ($7.95), meat ($9.95), and veggie-meat combo ($8.95). Each option comes with a pre-set menu of 10 dishes. These 10 dishes are served in individual bowls, all beautifully arranged on a white rectangular dish. Instead of getting your own food, the waiter replenishes your bowls as many times as you'd like. I tried food from both the vegetarian and meat menus, and everything was outstanding. It was much lighter than normal Indian buffet fare and just as flavorful, so I didn't feel gross and stuffed at the end. It was an absolute treat to dine at Indigma on Halloween evening! We arrived about ten minutes prior to our friends; naturally we headed to the bar. Tony, the owner, was exceptionally welcoming, and jumped behind the bar to pour drinks for us. For a Saturday night, the crowd was relatively small, but keep in mind this was also Halloween night. Our friends arrived shortly, and after finishing our first drink we decided to have a shot before dinner. Two of us requested lime juice in our shot, and when Tony discovered he was out of lime juice, he was ready to send someone to the store. We quickly refused his offer and chose another shot. Add a star for the attempt to go over and above..... Dinner was fantastic. Everything about the service was extremely accommodating; from our request to serve our meal family style for sharing purposes, to a fresh table cloth after spilling some of the appetizer on the table. Speaking of the food..... we ordered the open face samosa, which was a delicious mix of spinach, peas, potatoes - perfectly spiced. The gobi manchurian featured a flavorful sauce covering the cauliflower, which was crisp and crunchy. The entrees shared amongst the four of us included dal makhani (a combination of lentils with a nice spicy flavor); lamb xacuti which was deliciously flavored with hints of coconut; murgh masalam, a spicy red sauce over chicken, and shrimp entree which also featured coconut in a curry sauce. Absolutely delish. The bread was flavorful, warm and tasty. Everything served was not only eye catching, but extremely tasty. Also enjoyed the lychee creme brulee with some cardamom chai. We enjoyed the twist on typical Indian food, and would absolutely come back for another meal. Indian fusion can be a hit or miss but I was willing to give it a try and was quite excited for this new experience in Baltimore. The service was friendly and the food was ok. The problem of the night was the big advert of 20% off for happy hour, which is posted on the sign at the front of the restaurant and was repeated to us by the bartender/waitress when we entered. After we had ordered a mango lassi each and our appetizer and entrees, a few minutes passed before the server returned to inform us that it is only 20% off if you purchase an alcoholic beverage! This was the first time in life that I had ever heard such a thing and the first time in any of the over 40 countries I've visited. Not even in Kazakhstan or Nigeria where I've had some pretty weird service did I ever encounter such oddness. It felt like it was a bit of a bait and switch. It was not mentioned until AFTER we had placed our orders. We were pretty irked and I had to mention it in this review because really? Come on! If you want to only give 20% off for those who are drinking alcoholic beverages then please say so at the beginning, not after we've placed our orders. It cast a shadow over the experience, sadly. We ordered the avocado pakora which itself was nicely lightly batter fried but I thought the accompanying sauce was not delicate enough to do it justice. My friend ordered the szechuan lamb and really enjoyed it. I had the veggie thali with spinach, dhal, eggplant and a kofta tikka masala. They were all tasty, especially the sauce for the tikka masala. I'm accustomed to my dhal being a bit bland to complement other spicy dishes but could adjust to the heat of this dhal. The rice pudding was perfect,not too sweet and the mango lassi a worthwhile non-alcoholic selection. If you want to drink this is the place to go, as they have a fully stocked bar and you'll get 20% off :) The decor is lovely with a large crystal chandelier in the back of the premises. The service here was terrible and I'm not sure I will go back again. Their food was just OK, not very authentic, but I'm sure everyone loves this place because the presentation is so nice, not necessarily because the food is so great or different. Every table got bread except for us, and when we asked for bread noting that every table got it, the owner/waiter just smirked and gave us 4 tiny strips of crispy naan. We got their Avocado Nirvana (based on previous reviews) and they just cut an avocado in half, stuffed it with a boiled egg, and poured over a crushed lentil sauce- I wouldn't get this again. Their Gobi Manchurian was cauliflowers fried in a hot Asian sauce- tasted exactly like General Tso's chicken, except with cauliflower- get this if you want a vegetarian General Tso's chicken, but I thought it was too saucy. Their clay oven pomfret was tilapia baked crispy with a nice char- definitely NOT the best fish I ever had, but it was good. I didn't like how they only gave you one small, square bowl of rice. Their lychee creme brulee was good but was served warm and liquidy. Isn't creme brulee supposed to be cold and firm? The sugar coating was soggy and burnt, not crispy. It tasted like it just came out of the oven but never set. The lychee flavor was hardly noticeable. The caramelized mango was like soaked, sugary slices of mango (not fresh) with charred marks on it, couldn't really taste the caramelization, with a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream. The owner/waiter only came to our table once to top off our water and cared less that we were there. They basically take basic, not-so-good Indian food and put it into little containers and white dishes with swirly sauces to make the restaurant seem cooler/better than it is. Saturday Brunch ($12.95, with naan and limited dessert option.) SETTING: A few seated tables in the front parlors, so a moderate/quiet time of day. SERVICE: Friendly service, though could have monitored water levels and need for plate removal a bit more. BREAD: Perhaps warm naan, wrapped in a basket, would be ideal for the cooler months. Good flavor and texture all the same. Offered on the table during buffet. VEGETARIAN: Generous collection of vegetarian options, which were kindly labeled. SPICE/SERVICE: A bit more guidance on which dishes are the spiciest would be ideal. When asked, was offered that they were all about the same. Upon tasting them, the truth was revealed. I expected as much, but would have appreciated a clearer story to begin with, to avoid wasting food. BEVERAGE: Mango lassi being served with ice cubes and an overly-long straw in a cactus margarita glass was a bit odd and humorous, especially for $4, but flavorful nonetheless. RESTROOM: Inner ladies restroom doors do not lock well, though the purse hooks are helpful and the space was clean. DECOR: A few authentic decor pieces, roses on each table, and colorful painting of existing, historic details within the building are nice touches, though some elements could use "a woman's touch" to easily bring it up another style star. VIEWS: Front parlor rooms offer great views out high windows of Mt. Vernon's historic architecture and trees. ACCESS: Kindly note that although it says it says "wheelchair accessible" on Yelp, there are steep exterior stairs, so an alternative entrance would have to be known via calling in advance. read more

This place is excellent - I love Indian restaurants which are not only vegan friendly but have a vegan portion of the menu clearly labeled. When I saw this on their online menu, I told my friend we had to come here. We made a reservation at 9 PM for 9:30 (short notice, I realize) and as we came in, they knew we were the web reservation peeps. They had a table ready right away, and the server was super nice - he checked to see what kind of whiskey they had, and was just overall very accommodating. The food itself was awesome - vegetable coconut korma, and gobi manchurian - with perfect naan and rice. For two people, drinks & all the typical Indian sides - it was very affordable. And the decor/location is fabulous. I love the old house feel, and the view out onto Mount Vernon. Great place, and a nice change in pace for the usual (awesome) Indian type joints. I arrived at Indigma frustrated from trying to find FREE parking for a good 20 minutes on a late Friday evening. I'm from North Carolina, so my parallel parking skills are a bit elementary, so I can park with ample space only! lol. So I may have passed a spot or two, but only because it'd take me a good 5 minutes holding up traffic to park. So I just ended up using valet for $7. Anywho... onto the food review. Am I an adventurous eater? Guilty. Am I a picky eater? Guilty again. So I'll admit that when trying Indian food I go with staples I'm familiar with, then if those met my standards I'll come back again and be the less picky but adventurous gal when ordering. So this was my first time at Indigma. After I calmed down from my parking frustrations, here's what we ordered: -Open Face Vegetable Samosa: Banging! Definitely get this if you come here Chicken Tikki Masala: Wasn't the best I've had, but it had a little heat, and it was flavorful enough. -Lamb Korma: My friend ordered the Lamb Korma, and I liked that much better than my own. The lamb was nice and tender. -Naan: It was light and fresh. -Basmati Rice: Good covered with the curry sauces from the entrees of course -"Grand" Gulab Jamun: Didn't like this either, it was like two wet doughnut balls soaked in honey and grand mariner. It was really sweet, but I didn't like the consistency/texture of it. (So we both ordered this initially, and when the owner/head chef saw we hadn't finished the dessert, he offered to let us try the rice pudding on the house.) -Rice Pudding: It was sweet, but there was a spice used that I don't think belonged. And I didn't like the texture of the rice, it wasn't soft enough. I actually ended up coming to Indigma about four times this year with friends and once with my sister for their lunch buffet. For $13, this place is really worth it. They open at 1130 with all foods steaming hot. The one time I went around 130pm, most of the food was gone or somewhat lukewarm. That being said, it is a lunch buffet so first come first serve. Best Indian food I've ever had. My husband isn't really into middle eastern cuisine, but he decided he wanted to stop in for dinner one night after leaving the Walter's and smelling the lovely scent lofting from the door. The restaurant itself is beautiful. It's vibrant colors and fresh cut roses give an upscale feel combined with the old character and charm. I enjoyed the tandoori chicken while my husband had the chicken tikka. He took one bite, looked at me and said, "Oh my god... this is REALLY good!". They bring out chewy fried bread pieces with dipping sauce which my daughter loved. She also really liked the green dipping sauce in particular. The portion size was decent and for middle eastern food, it really wasn't expensive. I think it was $45 with tip for two full size dinner entrees and an order of roti. They do offer small plates if you're into that. We will definitely be back. This is looking like it's going to be one of our favorites! read more

(11/11/2011) Went to visit the reincarnated Indigma ("INDian enIGMA") at it's new location, across the street, since the 5-alarm fire that took it out December 7, 2010. They're in the ex-Patron (mediocre Mexican), ex-Tony Cheng's (80's upscale Chinese) space. The interior has gotten a nice paint job, lots of vibrant sherbert colors (fuschia, tangerine) with gold trim; like a beautiful sari. Service is careful, attentive, prompt. We talked over our selections with our server (he was very helpful in suggesting a harmony of plates and their timing). Started with the Mango Paneer, marinated shredded paneer folded with yellow peppers and sharp scallions, surrounded by swirls of a mango puree and tamarind sauce(?); and the Asparagus Pakora, al dente sweet asaparagus spears in a chickpea batter deep-fried, tasty, went a little limp moments after getting to the table (eat fast). I think we were missing the ginger-carrot chutney (so can't say anything about it), we amped up the flavors with some cilantro chutney, chili sauce and mango pickle; was a little confused by the superfluous garnish of baby spinach leaves, but ate it anyway. The kulcha, naan stuffed with potato and peas were just OK (small cubes of potato seemed not well integrated), and went kind of tough after it cooled, but flavors were nice, and, of course, useful for scooping. The server's suggestion for his and the chef's favorite lamb dish was the Lamb Poriyal (a traditional Kerala dish); a delicious slow-roasted dish flavored with many complex spices (curry leaf, ginger, black mustard seed), so glad we took his suggestion! The basmati rice that came with the lamb had a tinge of saffron and garnished with fried shallot slivers; the grains did feel a little underdone. The least successful dish of the night was the Mini dosa sampler: the veg was potato and cauliflower (filling), meat was chicken (boring), seafood was shrimp and maybe squid(?) and peas. The dosa crepe went soft pretty fast, and it was a little wan. The dosas also came with the usual accompaniment of lentil "soup", but this one was thick, like a stew or mash that was a little on the sweet side, and had large chunks of potato and maybe butternut squash. A friend dubbed the food "nouveau Indian". It's not exactly the best Indian food I've ever had, but they have lots (an almost overwhelming number) of innovative things on the menu that set them apart from their neighbors nearby. The menu has plenty of interesting sounding things, and they are so welcoming (both Mr. and Mrs. Chemmanoor stopped by our table to check in on us); we'll def be back to make our way through them. read more

This is consistently the best Indian food I've ever had, and it just gets better every time! I don't know how they do it, but we are incredibly lucky to have such amazing Indian food here in Baltimore. The profile of spices is way beyond the other restaurants and the meat is always so tender and juicy. I cannot recommend this place enough and can't wait for the next meal! read more

My boy and I were looking for a place to eat late on a Thursday. Sadly it seemed like everywhere was closing. We decided to try this place. Even though they were getting ready to close they allowed us to sit. Everyone was super nice to us even though I know they were probably ready to go home. The owner even came over and chatted with us. Plus, the food was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the mini dosas. We'll definitely be back. read more

Great food, lousy service. That's the short of it...for the long...read below: Indigma serves some of the best Indian food in Baltimore. (I have eaten at most of the restaurants in the city and the surrounding counties.) I have visited Indigma three times: twice for dinner - Saturday evening (live sitar!) and a week night; once for the Sunday lunch buffet. Both times I was equally impressed WITH THE FOOD. All the dishes that I have tried have a complex, high-quality ingredient, from-scratch taste. The curries vary, so the dishes are interesting. They also have different, regional dishes that are not always available at other restaurants. HOWEVER, the service is close to terrible - some of the worst I've experienced. I've had the same waiter twice. The first time he was unfriendly, impatient and not helpful, but the orders came quickly and the food was so good, I let it slide. But the second time (same server), he was rude, poured wine in my friend's water glass and failed to get her a fresh water, didn't give us any chutneys, (while all other tables received the usual complimentary servings) and didn't bring part of our order, which still appeared on the bill at the end of the night. The same hostess has been there each time and she is extremely awkward and talked to me like I was either incredibly amusing, an idiot or both. SO, go for the Sunday buffet - best Indian buffet. Hands-down. That way, you can serve yourself. read more
