Excellent food at HuHot! Mongolian grills are one of my absolute favorites, and this one didn't disappoint. If you've never been, the concept is simple but fun--you grab a bowl and load it up with meats, noodles, veggies, and sauces from the buffet (as much as you can fit), then watch as they cook it right in front of you on a huge grill. It's similar to hibachi, but with less of a show and more focus on the food. The atmosphere was lively and enjoyable, the prices were reasonable, and the food was fantastic. We have gone here many times The food is great. There are great options to add to your dish. The staff cooking our food and the wait staff are always very friendly. As for the manager he walks around a great deal but I have never seen him talking to or checking on guests or even smiling. There have been times when we were dining and the place was very busy. I always enjoy going here because I can get some lean protein and veggies that are ultimately simple, but yet still tasty. If you're not familar with HuHot, it's an All-You-Can-Eat mongolian grill. Grab a bowl, pile on some protein, such as either thinly sliced chicken, beef, imitation crab, or fish, grab some mussels even, and pile on them veggies to make yo momma proud. Afterwards, pick a sauce, or three, and head over to the giant grill, where the staff will cook your food as you watch. The ingredients are somewhat fresh; the meat is indeed frozen. But overall, quality is good. You can also order other things off the menu, like crab rangoon, or rice. DO NOT EAT HERE! Long story short, I found a large insect in my food.I was asked to leave once I brought it to their attention, my husband and I were asked to leave before I could even process what happened. They were very quick to get us out and while the manager did not make us pay, she did not allow me to ask questions, simply and very swiftly kicked lead us out of the restaurant. I reached out to corporate about this incident now TWICE, neither of the times have I gotten a response. Totally disappointing, but not surprising since it is Asian food in Iowa. The selection of protein is basic (low quality beef, chicken, pork, imitation haddock), didn't even have shrimp or eggs, and whoever cut all the ingredients needs to be fired. Half of the cut ingredients were the size of my palm. The noodles were complete mush, totally overcooked before they were even thrown on the flat top. The rice was dry and hard. The guys cooking on the flat top were all very nice, but they didn't really know what they were doing. Just kind of throwing the food around. I just visited this location but did not eat here and here's the reasons why: 1) None of the staff bothered seating customers. They didn't seem particularly busy considering there were five workers in the dining room but they were pro at ignoring the existence of five people waiting for a host/hostess to assist. Several minutes went by before I could flag someone down and ask for a table. 2) The table I was unceremoniously awarded was filthy. Neither it nor the bench seats were cleaned from the prior occupants and contained both wet and dry foreign boogery contaminants probably of an organic nature, but I wasn't about to go further into forensic analysis. A quick scan revealed the floor and overall the whole restaurant looked like it needed a serious cleaning. This is not right during COVID season or really any season. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the grief and hepatitis types A to C and eat somewhere that cares about customer service and cleaning. read more

God awful eatery. Run down joint in otherwise great location. Trying to cater to the masses with all you can eat buffet. You've got to take the time to stay in line watch the staff BURN your food. If you vegetarian or vegan beware your food will be tosses with the same spatulas as the carnivores. You end up with a mash of overcooked vegetable and/or tofu that I wouldn't even feed my dog! There is nothing healthy or pleasant about eating out here. Having to stand in line to wait on your food being 'grilled', makes it next to impossible to have a nice sit down diner with friends. I have not been here in ages. My brother was the one that suggested going and I am glad we did! What I like about HuHot is you can customize your own bowl of noodles just as you like to. Give me ALL the veggies and spicy sauce!! My bowl was delicious and oh so flavorful! My biggest complaint about creating your own is the thought of people potentially using their hands to retrieve topping options = risk for contamination (being a nurse I get a little OCD about this stuff). Come here and get your fill! As someone that lives a low carb lifestyle, I really cant go wrong with HuHot. With the addition of zoodles on their noodle buffet, I dont have to feel left out in the slightest! Their selection of meat is (almost always) fully stocked and there is something for everyone - from beef to chicken to seafood and even tofu. They've got you covered! My 4 stars come from the fact that the floors can get VERY slick and both my elderly mother and myself have nearly slipped and fell. The counter where you set your food also tends to get VERY dirty at busy times. It would be nice to see an occasional wipe off of that counter. Lastly, almost every time I go, my food gets overcooked. It typically doesn't bother me enough to render it inedible, but sometimes things get cooked down so much that they almost disappear. I've reviewed HuHot as a chain previously, but Matt hadn't been before so we stopped at the Lindale location. This is a choose your own ingredients style restaurant. Pick your meat, noodles, veggies, and sauce then get in line and watch the grill guys prepare your food. Pretty average, not gross but not good. This location is in the mall and has such a weird layout. I found it a little difficult to navigate, but I may just be on the cranky side today. I was also pretty irritated to see they charged us over $5 for two drinks when they come in a tiny glass with tons of ice. Refillable or not, that's less than a can of soda for 5 times the price... 3-stars because Matt liked the food more than I did, but we both agreed we wouldn't be returning. read more

My wife and I dined at this restaurant last night. We have dined at the Genghis Grill a couple of blocks away on many occasions and we enjoyed GG. We decided to try Hu Hot because we were already at the mall for other reasons. We were not happy. First, it was loud. Music was playing to loudly to talk. I even had to ask the server to repeat herself a couple of times and she was standing beside me. The booth where were were seated needed to be replaced. It is hard to explain but the seats just kind of dropped low when you sat on them. Apparently the springs in the seat were pretty much shot. Then came the food. First was the meat, and the beef was frozen solid. The amusing thing was that from the appearance of the meat, it was dropped and allowed to break into jagged pieces. The the noodle station... I don't want my noodles in the same bowl as everything else. The vegetable station was next in line. Several of the vegetable selection were still frozen together in clump as if they put the veggies into the pans then store the pans in a freezer. Last but not least was the sauce station. At least three of the sauces had ice cubes floating in it. Yes, someone had to purposefully have put ice into the sauce which as you can imagine will dilute it and make it watery. The food stations and the grill area were not exactly the cleanest places I have seen. When you watch the cooks with your food, you see the spatulas flying and chopping and food flying off the grill. The floor was actually wet around the grill. How they kept from slipping and falling, I will never know. I was not happy about standing there and waiting for 15 minutes for my food. Overall the place was dirty, loud and the food and sauce selections were sadly lacking. Service was non-existent. The serve, Stacia, was very slow. It took her ten minutes just to get us the check. It took 9 more minutes for her to come back and pick up the payment. The place was not busy. There were 9 tables and to cover those tables there were two hostesses, and three servers as well as what appeared to be a bartender. Will I eat there again? Not as long as there is a Genghis Grill two blocks away and probably not even if there were no Genghis Grills. read more

This was my first time eating at any hu hot and I was so impressed. Our waiter was very on the ball. He knew what he was doing and he never let our glasses become empty. When my husband and I went for our second plates he sat with our daughter and just talked while she ate. I would reccomend this place to anyone. This place was a different kind of experience for lunch today! The food and service was good. We choose to eat from the buffet. The buffet is all you can eat, and serves uncooked for you to put on the grill. My only complaint was that there was no shrimp on the buffet. We asked if they had shrimp available but was told that they only had them on Tuesday's and Thursday's. However, our waitress was very informative about how to create your own plates. It's now a tradition when I'm in Cedar Rapids to come here for dinner with my sister and her husband. I love restaurants like these, and there aren't any near where I live. It's a fun place to go, and you surprisingly can get through a very fulfilling dining experience in a short amount of time. Everytime I've eaten here I've had good experiences with the staff. The drink glasses are very small, and they've always been kept filled. The guys at the big grill have always made some point to socialize with my friends and I while they are making our food (they accept tips from a little jar where they serve you your plate so there may be a good reason for this), but all in all its a fun environment. The reason why I didn't give it five stars is because the meat are little frozen chips, and for some reason that leaves me unsettled. I've never had a bad digestive experience from here before, but it still weirds me out. I also really like how they refer to the sauces as "Weapons." I've had much success mixing and making very unique dishes. Next time I go, I'll try the s'mores dessert, which apparently comes out with its own little grill. read more

We have eaten at Genghis Grill multiple times and really enjoy the opportunity to put together a custom stir-fry. Since we were near the HuHot we decided to give it a try. I really don't expect to make a point to return. The food was alright, but I too find that I enjoy the Genghis Grill set up better. Ironically we must have been seated in the same booth as Kenneth. But now over a year later that booth is still saggy! The frozen meat threw me. I'm sure it helps prevent food poisoning due to cross-contamination or improper holding temperatures, but it seems like it would then take longer to cook. Hated that I had to waste bowl space with the noodles, especially since I had to fish the tongs out of them. Thinking about the germs on the handles and now all over the noodles was enough to make me consider a starch-less bowl. Nice selection of veggies. I think that Genghis has more selection, but HuHut still had the basics. Sauces. I know that they range from hot to mild as it goes left to right, but which sauce is in front of the other? Sometimes you can tell by looking, but a sign informing would be good. Also, without sampling, how do you know if you like the sauce? Again kudo's to Genghis for their little tasting spoons. Also here you need 3-5 ladles full. On my second trip I put the sauce in first and was surprised how much sauce that is. The show of cooking. Yes that big slab gets gross looking. I see them scraping it off, but what are you leaving behind? I don't have a food allergy, but all I could think about was if I did, I wouldn't eat there. The banging and flipping of the spats seemed designed to entertain, ok you can flip it and fling my food into the neighboring pile. I watched countless times as they pulled something back out of the food next to it. Also food cost must not be an issue, cause I saw lots of food hitting the floor. (Hey you're losing all of my beef!) Service was minimal as I would expect at a place where I'm plating up my my own food. Had to remind server of discount even after telling her at the beginning of the meal. We were there at 3pm on a Saturday, so it wasn't overly busy. So if you go, know what to expect. read more

My first time here was wonderful, and I couldn't believe that my 10 and 11 year olds got their all you can eat bowl for $4.99 (kids meal price)! What a bargain and the food is amazing. I filled my bowl with imitation crab and sausages and veggies and then topped with noodles and green curry. The chef cooked it in front of me and then I topped with peanuts. Soooo yummy. Absolutely awful. We have LOVED this place for years!! Weve been there 2x in 3 months and the first time of shock, I figured it was an off day. This time shows management doesnt care at all! First we waited for the hostess for way too long. Then our hostess was our waiter and he wasnt bad, it was obvious they were under staffed with a busy wkend of people christmas shopping. Preparing our food was interesting bc most items were low and the sauces were empty for even the 2nd trip up!! Then the cooks were counting their tips on the counter and arguing over a damn dollar. One said he was there first and the other said he was on the grill more.... WOW! Then the one cook wouldnt stop flirting and staring at my 15 year old daughter! I told him she's only 15!!! The waiter then gave us our check and we were wanting dessert but NOPE, went to DQ instead. I just couldnt believe how dirty it all was and the bathrooms smells absolutely horrid!!! Toliets had pee on them toliet paper all over the floors... the cook station was gross... I didnt even think I should eat what was prepared....so far we're feeling ok... but some sickness is about to happen with how nasty everything is!
