OG Review (02/28) (updates below) The folks on the SW side just fire off missile after missile out of that kitchen. Found this new dish tonight. Spicy Sesame Cold Noodles. Unreal. Tried the Shanghai Style Spring rolls for the first time. Couple of mini tomahawks showed up in that wax paper bag. I mean I'm over here looking at a maki roll with pieces of tuna so big it looks like they wrapped a roll of nickels in rice and nori. Their level of quality is has gotten so high I'm not sure they're capable of making a mistake let alone a bad dish. 03/08 Update New week. New order from the folks on the SW side. I've admittedly had this arrow in my quiver for a while but can't drop another review too soon and throw exclusive vibes. Don't get me wrong I have strong feelings but I am also low-key into Pho House. What can I say? I guess I'm a House guy. Anyhow, had an eye doctor appointment down the street (shoutout Dr. Fitz. SW side legend in the eye health space) so it was no brainer takeout time. Snuck the order in quick after battling through the little air puff machine. Food was ready in 20 minutes. Somehow you can get speed, quality, and value under one roof. It's immaculate. Since we're here it's probably the right time to discuss depth because this menu has a lot of it. In the interest of transparency I did have the Tuna Maki roll again. I have it every time. It's simple and it's beautiful. If you're the reading type and get deep enough into the menu you'll find the find Pad Thai. You might be thinking to yourself, "Are they really this agile?!" If you asked I think you already know the answer to the question. Order the Pad Thai. Trust me. And while you're at it grab a Shrimp Tempura roll, too. The eel sauce will have you in your feelings after one bite. read more

I love this place. I have eaten here a number of times with my friends and even tried the Door Dash route once with it and it was still delicious. Their service is always friendly and on top of it. Their food is fresh and good and they give you a lot. Absolutely love the Crab Rangoons! I have not had a bad experience or meal there and would absolutely recommend it! read more

Not quite 5 stars but not 4 stars either. I'll simply say, over the many years and many times coming back to Sushi House, I've never had a bad experience, 4 1/2 stars would be ideal. This is one of the two places I come to every time I'm in Cedar Rapids, Taste of India is the other place. I always over order and take food home with me. Today I ordered the gyoza, yakitori, sizzling rice soup but today I skipped out on the sesame chicken. As I said before, I've never had a bad experience here, this time was no different. Having said that, I will say that of all the times I've order the chicken sizzling rice soup, it's only ever been "sizzling," twice. The flavor is alway excellent and it's what I always wish for when I'm sick. The broth is light but flavorful, mixed with the onions, peas and chicken. The rice is supposed to be heated then poured in the soup at the table and therefore sizzles in the bowl, I haven't seen that done in years. I liked the spectacle of it as much as I liked the soup. Sushi House will remain in my list of restaurants to return to when I come to Cedar Rapids, they've been there from the beginning and have done nothing to change that fact. read more

First time dining here in years and it was just as good as I remember. Clean and inviting atmosphere with a sense of privacy thanks to the bamboo plants in between rows of tables. Our server was delightful. She was knowledgeable and attentive. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Angry Dragon Roll. The quality is excellent for prices that aren't going to break the budget. I have gone to this restaurant more times than I can count, from dine-in to take-out. It's one of my favorites because the food quality is consistently high with excellent service. Not to mention that the interior atmosphere is ideal, with seating set up in smaller sections spread throughout the restaurant. I cannot recommend enough. read more

We had made reservations through Yelp, so when we stopped in for Valentine's Day and the hostess said they don't do reservations, and ushered us to the hall to wait, I was a little worried...HOWEVER, within 5 minutes, we had a table and were placing drink orders and ordering some crab rangoons. I cannot speak highly enough of the level of service we experienced. Our waitress had six different tables (including ours) sat between 4:55 and 5:10 - she CRUSHED it. I swear she was running back and forth the entire 60 minutes we were there, but our food was fast and delicious (we did the Spicy Crispy Chicken, Crunch Roll and Orange Dragon Roll), and we did not get to the bottom of our drinks before our waitress was back to get refills. Gluten free due to celiac disease- ate confidently with recommendations from waitress. They have gluten free soy sauce on hand. Ate an avocado and cucumber roll as well as edamame and chicken broccoli stirfry. Originally asked for pad Thai and waitress was good at indicating regular soy sauce is in the original recipe and unable to be made gluten-free. Most authentic sushi have ever eaten and one my favorite restaurants ever! The service is always prompt and friendly! The menu has Japanese,Chinese, and a plethora of options. I used to love their Ohi Tashi which was a spinach appetizer,but they no longer offer that dish. I am obsessed with the many sushi dishes that include cooked options for those that don't like raw and it is clearly marked as to which is raw and which are spicy. They Ambiance is lovely with a bamboo wall separating some tables from the booths. I have taken my grandson's and we sat at the sushi bar to watch our orders being prepared! So fun, and yes! I've never really been a sushi gurl, but the rest of my friends like it and this is the favorite restaurant in town. I appreciate Sushi House for its variety of vegetarian options. Often times, the veggie offerings are super basic and boring, but not here. I usually get shiitake, yam tempura, and cucumber avocado maki rolls. The shiitake in particular is super flavorful and has an interesting texture to it. And the plating is really pretty of course, adds a nice touch. Service has always been friendly and quick, even when the place is packed. They've definitely made me a person who craves sushi now and that's certainly the best endorsement I could think of :) read more

Stopped here for the first time today for lunch after a really long drive. The host was quick to sit us with a waitress being quick to come over to take our drink order. We went for their sushi and the rolls were very well priced. Definitely could have gotten more than intended if I wanted. All four rolls shared with my friend were delicious & came out extremely quickly. The Honey Roll (the white roll in the left side of my picture) was my favorite tho, with sweet potatoe and cream cheese. I added the spicy Mayo and eel sauce. I definitely will be dreaming about that roll for months to come! The decor was simple but pretty. I specially loved the gold kimono on the wall. read more

I went to the Sushi House for lunch and I had to wait 10 minutes before getting sat. It was extremely busy inside when I went. I liked the indoor decor, as it was very festive and unique. I ordered an L1 Sushi Bento Box, which I hadn't ever tried and didn't quite know what was all in it, but I thought I'd give it a shot because I wanted to be adventurous and try something new. The food I ordered was ok but way over fried. My waitress was very kind and efficient. Overall, pretty average experience. read more

I've frequented this restaurant with many people over the years, and also gone by myself multiple times and every time they have remembered my order! Very personable staff, I stuck with them through COVID although they had a rough patch with staff asking if you planned on tipping before ordering anything but service has improved a lot since then and so had business. The food is good here. Typical Japanese, Chinese and other Asian cuisine. However, we had a bad experience here, due to the long, long lag time in between when our food was brought out. We were in a group of four. We all ordered our food at the same time. So two of us got our food about twenty minutes later. We tried to politely wait until the other two people in our group were served. Our waitress, who I felt sorry for, was clearly embarrassed, as the clock ticked on. We finally ended up eating our meals as half an hour had gone by and it was getting quite cold. Finally, forty minutes after the first two entrees were served, we got the other two (this was a full hour after we ordered!). Although our waitress was very apologetic and even the host stopped over to apologize for the inconvenience, no money was taken off the bill and we were not offered so much as a free drink. I don't typically "yelp" on here and I try to give positive review in general, however, this experience was very bad. I had to let the Yelp community know about it! read more

Wife and I came here for dinner tonight. Nice ambiance, friendly & efficient staff. Sushi is good, not great, though the presentation is very good. Prices are reasonable. We started with the age-dashi tofu. The skin was nice and crispy, and the tofu was hot. The sauce was a bit bland. I had several fish egg nigiri, a salmon skin roll and eel roll (see first photo). I have never seen flying fish roe such a brilliant red - it is normally pink. I don't know if this is a different variety or whether there was some coloring added. Taste was good, and the salmon roe was excellent. The salmon skin roll was ok, I like mine with the skin crispier, and the sauce for both rolls didn't have the rich taste I am used to. The eel roll was disappointing, I couldn't find any eel. We walked away satisfied, but I have been eating sushi for 40 years all over the country so I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to this stuff! read more

I was charged twice for my order yesterday. Came in to get my takeout, they told me there wasn't an order, so I ordered again with the cashier. An hour and a half later, I get a call from my husband who said this restaurant called and said my order was ready. This was the one I had ordered the 1st time. Called to get my money back and the lady who checked me out was arguing with me and wouldn't let me speak with a manager. I emailed them yesterday and have not received a response. Overall this place was a mix of some mediocre food and some pretty great food. The biggest challenge I think is just trying to do too many things at once - they're simultaneously doing a full Japanese kitchen menu, a sushi bar, and a full Chinese kitchen menu. From what we tried I'd say that the Chinese dishes were pretty good, the sushi was not (although it's possible this is just as good as you're going to find in Cedar Rapids), and the Japanese was okay. i did have the tonkatsu which I thought was done pretty well, and their katsu sauce was tasty and had to have been made in house. Nothing blew me away, but the dishes out of the kitchen were all pretty well executed. The tuna maki I had was not good at all though - it was dry and the fish was not quite cut right - had a bit of stringiness to it that shouldn't be there. Most of the sushi here seems focused on the very American idea of cramming a dozen ingredients (and I mean literally with some of the "special" sushi here) together into a roll, and coming out with something with no distinct flavors that's worse than what you can do with a few quality ingredients well-executed. read more

Pretty solid meal at the Sushi House. Ordered Fried Rice w/ Chicken and a couple of sushi rolls. Rolls were very good. I had the Smoked Salmon and the California. The fish in the salmon roll was fresh tasting and both rolls were tasty and presented well. The Fried Rice was a huge portion, had plenty of meat and also had good flavor. Service was almost too good! I don't know if it was because it was late in evening or this was normal, but the staff seemed to be in high gear. This used to be one of my favorite go to spots in CR and I keep going back hoping it will be as delicious as it was back in the day. Unfortunately I've had some very bad experiences here before. Be sure not to go there within 45 minutes of closing time, I've seen the service go downhill incredibly quickly. This last time I was here the food was good at best, the ingredients of the sushi didn't seem to be fresh and the service was rushed. They're crabmeat rangoons are DELICIOUS though and super cheap. We ordered the Iowa roll (not on the menu - they haven't updated the menu in years), Philadelphia roll and the Mother'a Day roll. I didn't feel greatest after eating it.we did order crabmeat rangoons as well. They're always delicious and super cheap. Be sure to check the specials board as you walk in, there's usually decent rolls on there, albeit a little pricy though. They also have a picture menu online that they don't ever mention, but it's very helpful to figure out what to order since the staff often times isn't super helpful. Normally I love this place but the past few times I've tried to order over the phone they were so outwardly mean to me I just decided to go in to see if they were just busy. When I got there I told them I wanted to order to go and asked what they recommend because I wanted something new and the guy at the counter completely rushed me and said he didn't know what I should get. The woman who seemed to be in charge was also incredibly rude and complaining I only spent $13 to him. I would have spent well over $50 not including tip like I normally do but I felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable I just wanted to leave at that point. Honestly if you're looking for service I hope you get one of the nice servers, otherwise just cut your losses. I really want to like this place because the food is awesome it just doesn't seem like they want anyone there. read more

I stopped by the Sushi House last Thursday to treat myself after a long week in Cedar Rapids. I am from Council Bluffs and was in Cedar Rapids on business. I walk in and placed a to-go order of four rolls, spicy tuna, spicy crab(special), negiri, and the Manhattan Specialty Roll. I placed my order with the very nice hostess and my rolls were ready in about 10-15 minutes. Very fast compared to other sushi places that I have ordered from in the past. All of the rolls were delicious and fresh. The Manhattan roll was awesome. The sushi is a tad more expensive than what I am used to in Omaha, but the company paid for it, so I was cool with that. If I had to pay out of pocket, I wouldn't have gotten four rolls, maybe just a couple. When I'm in Cedar Rapids again, I am definitely stopping by the Sushi House to grab some sushi! read more

My bill was $64. The food was good but it took me 3 shots of the $5 hot sake to determine it was off and I wanted something else. After being told by the waitress "well you drank most of it, it will be up to my manager" and the cashier saying afterward "she paid for your drink, next time tell us sooner" they took it off the tab. In my 39 years of eating out I've never experienced such insulting side comments. I don't care about the price, it's the principle. I tipped $38 and apologized to the waitress that they would make her pay for my bad drink and left. read more
