To keep things short, I love the way that this place perfects EVERYTHING. This place has not only the best food I've ever tasted in my whole life, the service was amazing, but also the ambience felt like I was in a whole new country! Everybody in Iowa should go to this place IMMEDIATELY! First of all, the food is heavenly. I tried the Crunchy Roll, and even though I am allergic to seafood, this piece of deliciousness was worth the anaphylactic shock! Next I tried the Orange Chicken and this was equally as amazing as the Crunchy Roll. To sum up the food here, the food I have tried is absolutely amazing. The second reason I love this place is because of the service added. Our server was not only incredibly kind, he was also working really hard in his job. The kindness of this man was unbelievable. He was apologizing for the smallest things, and he noticed imperfections in the food I didn't even notice! I was looking at what he was doing and he was doing this to everybody! This was my favorite restaurant to frequent whenever I revisited my hometown. It's very sad to say that the quality has gone ridiculously downhill with each passing year. What was once a hub for authentic Chinese dishes has now become a shell of what it once was. Everything is Americanized to the max now and the quality of the dishes have also suffered since then along with the portion sizes. I came here with a group and we ordered the jumbo crab, some rolls, and some beef and kung pao chicken dishes. WE WAITED AN HOUR FOR OUR FOOD. We literally sat by the counter area where the dishes were placed and ready to be picked up and the dishes were just SITTING THERE ON THE COUNTER instead of being served to us once they were ready. Now, I understand that wait times tend to happen when you have a group, but it was ridiculous to have to sit there and see our dishes being placed one by one on the counter and getting cold instead of just being served to us. We even ASKED IF WE COULD have the dishes served to us when they were ready but none of the servers complied. They also forgot our drinks several times... After waiting an hour, we finally got all our dishes at once. Although the crab was good, the kung pao chicken and beef dishes were cold and the taste also suffered as a result. Then our entrees: fried rice, spider roll, pad Thai, sweet 'n' sour chicken, orange chicken, pineapple fried rice. One person thought their food should have been hotter. Why oh why did I just now find this place? Only several days before I move across country and I find an amazing Chinese food restaurant with a menu longer than the great wall. If there was a downside to this restaurant it is that the menu is so big that it borderlines on daunting. I had the generals chicken with noodles. Absolutely amazing! The chicken was cooked perfectly, the sauce was just the right blend of spicy and the noodles were absolutely incredible. Best of all, the portion size was so large that I had enough to take home for lunch the next day. If this restaurant were in a better location with a more appealing curb presence, it would be packed all the time. Unfortunately, it is in a rather awkward strip mall and not really visible from the road. You really have to know it's back here in order to find it. Do yourself a favor and track this place down. Probably the best Asian food I've had in a really long time. This is something you would find in the nice parts Chinatown. I had the broccoli beef which was pretty basic but the meat cut with a fork. Service was good and you can definitely make it for lunch. I highly recommend it. read more

We couldn't be happier with our first dining experience at the Mandarin Spice Asian Grill. We were pleased that they were having dine in during the COVID 19 scare. But thankfully all the staff was wearing the clear plastic face shields and the tables were intentionally spaced a good space apart. The menu has a great selection of Asian fare. We tried the 'Appetizer Combo' and could quickly tell we were in for a great dining experience. We then enjoyed the 'Fried Rice with Seafood'. Large portion with a light but flavorful mix of yummy well prepared seafood. Last but not to be over shadowed, we were blown away by the rich flavor of the 'Roast Peking Duck'. Most restaurants require a day advanced order to enjoy a Peking Duck, but not at the Mandarin Spice. Like any rich food, you should have a good drink to clean your palate. I chose a nice cold 'Blue Moon'... While not an inexpensive meal, the quality and portions were very appropriate for the cost. We will definitely return, and we will bring friends. A romantic setting with great food, setting and ambiance. At Mandarin Spice you are greeted at the front door by a life sized Chinese Terracotta soldier statue. The restaurant is decorated throughout with similar impressive decorations. The food is superb. They offer dishes from throughout the Orient, including Japanese, Chinese, Singapore, Korea, etc. These include a long list of sushi, fried rice, noodles, soups, salads and other specialty dishes, like pad Thai and Korean Barbeque. In my opinion, the sushi is the best in Cedar Rapids, including raw, cooked and vegetarian rolls. If you like cooked sushi, check out the Monster Roll. It has tempura shrimp, cream cheese and crab. They're delicious. The appetizer combo is really good, too. It includes firecracker shrimp, egg rolls and cheese ragoons. They also, in my opinion, have the best fried rice dishes in town. They taste a lot like hibachi grill food. All of their dishes look and taste like they were cooked and plated by an expert chef. I've been trying to make the rounds of places that we/ve never been to, and today it was Mandarin Spice Asian Grill. A friend has dined there so we headed on over. About 11:30 on a Sunday morning, and it didn't look like it was open yet, since the windows are very dark, and there was no 'OPEN' sign visible. Not to worry, it was open for business, and we were not the first diners. We were seated promptly. I was surprised that the interior is actually pretty classy. On Sunday they had a buffet, which was $19.99, but that's just an invite to overeat, so we kept our wishes to the regular menu, which was fairly extensive. We shied away from the sushi, and the small plates, and went right for the entrees. The server was cordial and allowed us enough time to browse the menu. Our entrees, Pineapple fried rice, with chicken added for $2, and the Beef Brisket and broccoli were very nice, and the portion sizes were quite adequate. The food was served hot and was pleasing to the palate. I'll definitely make a return visit to try more of the entrees. The after church crowd made the place hum with activity, so it looks like there are quite the number of regulars. read more

This place is apparently one of my parents' favorite places to eat, but on my a recent visit with some of my extended family, it was entirely disappointing. For one, service was unbearably slow. After getting seated, it took over 10 minutes for someone to come by and take our drinks order, and then it took several minutes more to take our food order. After that, it took nearly 45 minutes for the food to come out, and when we were seated it was already past the dinner rush and the restaurant was less than half empty. Service aside, the food was mediocre at best. Some things were good, such as a couple of the small plates. Most were average, and a couple of the items were really not that good at all. The "Buddha's Feast" was far too salty, to the point of being unappetizing. The fried whitefish, while beautifully presented, was too heavily breaded and overcooked, resulting in a dry fish. It was served with an excessively sweet sauce (yes, I know it's labeled as sweet and sour, but the name implies a balance and this dish clearly didn't have it). There was also an inadequate amount of vegetables in this dish, which is a shame because they were actually pretty decently prepared. A couple noodle dishes were well received, but the general consensus was they they weren't particularly memorable either. Prices were also a little more than I would have expected, which made this experience even more disappointing as we paid a goodly amount of money for a meal that ultimately failed to meet our standards. My parents assured me that they've had better experiences in the past, but for now I can't really recommend this place. We may come back some day, and if we do we will be far more circumspect when we make our selections. read more

My go-to place in Cedar Rapids where they offer really good roast duck and steamed fish (but you may need to call ahead to check if they have them in stock because they are ordered in fresh and don't always have them in stock). They also have a great variety of dishes including sushi and they have happy hour specials for their sushi menu. Another nice thing to note is that they offer Sapporo and Kirin Japanese beer that's not commonly found in restaurants around iowa. Just ordered to go during "lockdown" and had a hand rolled spicy Tuna roll, Volcano Roll, Crunchy Roll, Rainbow Roll and Kani salad. All were decent, and I'd say much better than the last time we dined in. I'm guessing the fish is all sushi grade, but I haven't seen any declaration on their menu mentioning that. (I believe it has to be, but I'm no expert.) The young lady who took my order was very polite, and attentive to what we needed (extra chop sticks, wasabi, etc), and our order was packaged with care. If you are looking for a solid Sushi pick in the Marion, IA area, Mandarin Spice is the place to go! These folks are my wife and I's go-to Sushi establishment in the area, without a doubt. Their Sushi is very good, the ambiance is warm and comfortable, and the staff are very friendly and attentive. We have been going to Mandarin Spice for quite a while and all of these attributes have remained consistent. My wife and I typically order some tea, a couple miso soups, and a few roles to share, and everything is always great! The environment is a little darker, but I like it with the styling and art, making it very comfortable and warm feeling. The staff always have been nice to us, our food regularly comes promptly, and the waiters and waitresses tend to check in with us about the perfect amount. The only reason why I'm not giving them five stars is I can't say that they are particularly unique.
