My husband I eat here at least twice a week. It is our go too always! What I really like is the fresh veggies they use and the Mongolian and Szechuan entrees. I love spicy and order extra spicy and they don't play, it's spicy and good! Love the fried chicken wings as they are unique with a yellow spice. Pork fried rice is amazing and is an option at lunch included in price ($10). They are wonderful people as well. The ambiance is nothing special but I'm there for the food not the ambience. We moved from the SW side of Cedar Rapids 7 years ago. We miss our deliveries from China King so much that we drove over to get takeout last night from Mount Vernon. It was as great as we remembered! Lemon chicken was so flavorful, Mongolian Beef - delicious and the sesame chicken was crispy and saucy and so good! Egg rolls, crab Rangoon are good, too. My husband always gets the pork lo mein and I got hot and sour soup. So much food and we will have a few meals from our order. read more

Momma always said, life is like strip-mall Chinese fast food, you never know what you're going to get. I'm talking about the order at the counter, Asian-American (emphasis on American) kind of place that all seem to be the same. Occasionally you find one that's pretty decent, but mostly not. Such is the case with China King next to WalMart south. Is this some sort of franchise? There's a China King in Marion with the same signage, but the clerk said they aren't related. I believe it, the one in Marion is much better. Both seem to be family run however. The first thing we noticed after we ordered our dine-in dinners was the cheapo plastic ware. I thought, I hope that means they put their money in the food instead of dinnerware. That was wishful thinking. The fried rice was probably the best part of the meal, it had good flavor and pieces of white meat chicken. I had the General Tso's Chicken which featured tough, grisly chicken with lots of breading in a sugary, slightly spicy sauce. The wife had the broccoli chicken. She said the veggies were good, but the chicken was mostly fatty pieces that looked like skin. She left most of it on her plate, I think it was chicken anyway. I really have to wonder where they source their meat. I don't even know where you find such poor cuts. Make the trip to Marion and pass this location by. read more

If there had been somewhere else within reasonable walking distance, we would have gone there, but we were getting tires at Discount Tire across the street and it seemed like it would be a good idea. Not so. First appearance was a faded, strip mall Chinese place. But it only got worse. After giving our order to the very non-welcoming man behind the counter we went to sit down. The order was dumplings, Kung Pao chicken and another chicken dish. The first table looked a little sticky. The second was as well and the third and so we sat down and tried to limit our exposure to the surface. I told my daughter is was very beneficial to have a table top this tacky and sticky; an earthquake won't spill your water. We didn't use the restroom, but looking at the greasy looking floor and the dirt along the walls leading there, I didn't want to know. In a short while my Kung Pao chicken made it's way out to me. The first thing I noticed was the eight peanuts on top. Yup, that was it. Eight. Then I noticed that the meat had been deep fried, not stir fried as most places serve it. The green peppers had met the same fate as they were blistered and greasy. Even the sauce looked greasy. We waited as the second meal had yet to arrive. About four minutes later it did. But what about those dumplings (an appetizer)? They will be right out, the female who had been dining at sticky table number 1 informed us. The forks that have been mentioned by several reviewers, still the really cheap ones. I had to look at two different tables to find one container that held a knife. I went up front for some sweet n sour only to find none. Duck sauce was the closest thing they had. I would have asked but no one acknowledged me as I stood there, so I went back with duck sauce. I hope no ducks were killed to make it. (relax, it's a joke.) So the meat was overcooked, the chicken fried rice (really chicken?) was unique and the crab ragoons were nothing to write home about. Over half way through with our meal and the dumplings arrive. I really wish they hadn't. The balls of meat inside of them would have bounced had I taken the opportunity to dribble them. The dough portion was overly thick and could have used a little more tenderizing. The other chicken dish was bland, it was a hot and spicy option and as with mine, flavorless. We went to leave and someone else was walking in and I wish I had taken time to pull them away and rescue them from what they were about to consume. I had not the courage, but I hope that this review might save someone. read more

1/4 star. Some little chinese joints are gems. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A GEM. The place is very dirty, all the tables, chairs, surfaces, floors, walls - everything - is covered in a greasy patina that indicates it has never ever ever been wiped down with any kind of detergent or cleaning agent. There was a pile of food LITERALLY in the middle of the dining area floor when I was there for carryout, and it had been there for a while. As soon as I'd placed my order and sat down to wait I started regretting my choice, as I could see more of the kitchen and the dining area. The food itself had a peculiar taste to it - I had a basic Gen Tso's chicken and egg rolls, the latter wasn't terrible but the chicken was just downright strange. I'm not a picky eater but I questioned myself as I ate this order (I'm a guy who used to eat 3-day old un-refrigerated pizza for breakfast so consider that here) and the gut-bomb feeling was not far behind that doubt. I'm not saying the food was tainted, not exactly, but...from what I saw of the place itself I wouldn't be surprised. Avoid this one if you have any other choice. I was surprised to read some of the negative reviews but I noticed they all seemed to be pretty old so I can only assume they have taken the negative comments and made vast improvements. I thought the beef lo mien was great, the noodles were fresh as were the veggies. There was ample pieces of meat and veggies not just stuffed full of noodles. The flavor was perfect! We also got the shrimp egg foo young and it was fantastic and hot, topped it with their gravy and I was in heaven! The order is quite large so it is something you could probably share however it is so good I'm struggling not to eat the entire thing myself! The egg rolls were honestly not my favorite, not horrible by any means and I may get them again but I've had better (and worse). The hot and sour soup had just the right amount of spice for me, some places make them a little too hot for my taste but this was exactly how I like it. Our delivery guy couldn't have been much nicer and we had an over all great experience. We have been struggling to find a good delivery in the area. There were foreign objects in some lo mien we got (it looked like shells or something but we didn't get sea food - that took me awhile to get over but I won't be going back there) from our regular spot and there was another that just seemed quite pricey and the flavor wasn't great at all. I had the General Tso's chicken it was over cooked and dried out, plus needed more heat/spice. The chicken fried rice was pretty good, but I did think it was over priced and the inside of the building was in need of repair and looked like it needed a good cleaning. I would steer clear of this place and head to HyVee for a cheaper dinner and much better food quality, plus it is a whole lot cleaner. read more

Awesome Takeout That Will Keep You Coming Back! Chinese food is comfort food for me. China King has great food at a great price and they are super quick. The employees always greet you with a smile and I have never had to wait for an order if I call it in first. Sure the plastic ware isn't the highest quality but it is better than the spork you get at the franchise fast food places. The food was not what they show on the menu. I ordered sweet and sour chicken (showed on the menu with veggies) and got a box of greasy chicken chunks (mostly skin and fat), questionable rice and odd tasting sweet and sour sauce. I asked for egg rolls and got crab ragoons instead, which I wouldn't mind except I am allergic to shellfish. (My friend ate them and said they tasted like crap) The staff didn't seem to know what was going on around them, and the entrance area was flooded in a HUGE puddle of water leaking from a plant that you had to step over to get to the counter. All around review- I wouldn't go there, I wouldn't reccommend it, and if someone mentions they are going there for lunch I am going to make a face. read more

This was the most nasty way too salty, hard chicken, would not give to the dogs kind of food!!!! Wasted 30.00 bucks on this food, also, nobody fixing the food wore gloves or washed hands. I eat here all the time. But only for the Crab meat rangoons. They are pretty good problem is that they are VERY greasy. I Had the sesame chicken, the sauce is good but the quality of there chicken is HORRID. You can't even swallow it because it is un chewable. Ether it is very fatty and you just don't want to swallow it or it is very hard. I recommend that if you want good chinese food, pay the extra price. I just placed an order from a hotel from Beyond Menu online. The fried rice had no flavor, was steamed rice not fried, drink wasn't in the bag, General Tao's chicken was hard as a rock and overcooked. No chop sticks, no plates (hotel). I called back and the woman who spoke hardly any English yelled at me and refused to refund the few items that were not there. I explained that she either refunded my money for the few items or I would dispute the entire charge. I never got one clear answer from her other than her arguing with me that it was my fault from what I could make out, for not asking for plates. I called the online food service and they explained that they got in touch with the owner, he refused to give me a refund because I gave him bad feedback on the review. Said he would make my order over. Like I would be dumb enough to eat anyhting from an angry restaurant that screwed up the first order. Funny how she spoke horrible English, but the owner could answer for the Beyond the Menu rep. I am a Chinese-American and have no problem with Chinese speaking people. They have no business ansewring the phones or getting nasty with people who can't understand them or their complaints. Guess the owner should be on the phone and maybe they wouldn't have so many issues. Still does not excuse disgusting food. read more
