I was waiting for my car to be ready for pickup at a friend's mechanic shop and I walked into SuYu Pei on 16th Ave SW for lunch at 1:15 today (Thursday) and was greeted immediately and told I could sit wherever I'd like. Not even 20 seconds later my waiter, Leo, showed up and told me about the lunch specials: For $10, you can choose from a large list of lunch items, each including an entree, side of rice, and a cheese Rangoon! He could tell I was stuck with all of the choices so he asked me what kinds of things I normally liked and recommended his favorite dish, so that's what I chose. I ordered the Sichuan with chicken, but you can also order it with beef, shrimp or tofu. I'm not lying when I say the food came out, piping hot, in about three minutes. Anyone who knows me knows I love sauce. I didn't have to get any extra sauce for this bad boy, it was sauuuuucy! The white rice was nice and sticky, the way it's supposed to be, and the cheese Rangoon was crispy on the edges and soft and all the way filled in the middle. Leo was so knowledgeable about the menu and fun to talk to, not to mention quick at noticing and asking for refills or if I needed anything else. I even found out that we knew a lot of the same people and we talked and laughed about that fact for a few minutes. After he brought me a box for the rest of my food, I told him my car was getting worked on at a shop nearby so I might sit a while longer if that was ok, and he looked concerned and told me the area wasn't super great for walking and asked me if I needed a ride back to the shop! Talk about customer service! I'm currently still sitting in the booth at SuYu Pei, but if I didn't want to be, I could be in and out in 20 minutes easily. Simple atmosphere. Nothing fancy but the food quality is very good, hot, and so fast. Madi was my server and she gave the best service. i went there on a Wednesday between6-6:30 and the place was pretty full but everything was good and fast. This is the mid Western United States so authentic chinese food is difficult to find at best and especially getting authentic chinese ingredients is even more difficult but they dk a great job regardless of what some reviews say the quality of food is excellent. I have been a loyal patron of Pei's since they were located on the NE side of town. Love their food. Hot and fresh. Great fried rice and crab rangoons and always treated well. I was recently there for lunch and ordered my usual mandarin fried rice. It comes with shrimp, chicken and beef. The amount of meat in my fried rice was so sparce it was extremely noticeable. I didn't say anything at the time but if I dine there again and notice the meat portion of the item is still lacking I am afraid I won't be eating there any longer. I could simply order fried rice and save the money I am charged for an item with meat. I would miss eating there so I am hoping this was a one time oversite. read more

Those who know Dave from his prior role at Pei's know that he took over this former restaurant space and is slowly making it his own. The food is so worth overlooking the atmosphere that some reviewers complain about. When they first started out they served the meals in containers as they moved from a take-out-only place. Big deal. Look at it as a unique business model v complaining about it. The rangoons are packed with cream cheese - they don't state they have crab (that way they can be vegetarian). The rangoons are a family recipe in taste and design (not folded allowing for even more cream cheese!!) and echo Pei's Mandarin of yesteryear. The rangoons are well-known to and loved by those of us who have lived here for years. Never had a bad meal. Those of us who know this institution will continue to come back and enjoy a good meal. Everything was very fresh and our meal was delicious aside from one thing... the egg rolls were literally dripping with grease, so we did not enjoy those, won't order them again. I've tried a lot of Chinese places in Cedar Rapids / Marion. Some have been slightly better than others. Some have been very good for a short time. Since I first tried SuYu Pei, every meal I have had there has been absolutely fantastic. They are not just slightly better than the other options. They are head and shoulders above any of the other Chinese restaurants I have tried in Iowa. SuYu Pei is the only place I can think of where I constantly try new things because everything I try is better than the last. If you like spicy food, I highly recommend the Singapore mei fun. If you don't like spicy food, I also love the Mongolian chicken / beef / pork, and the princess chicken / beef / pork. read more

They make it easy to order takeout or delivery. I ordered the Mongolian Chicken lunch ($10.00) which includes Fried or Steamed Rice and a Crab Rangoon! I also requested a bowl of Hot and Sour Soup ($6.00) for an appetizer, with Water ($0.00) to drink. Smaller cups of soup ($3.00) are available. Melissa, our waitress, stopped by a number of times to assure there were no issues and we were satisfied. Pei's food hit the spot! I left VERY satisfied. SuYu Pei's is highly recommended! I'll be completely honest - as far as the food goes, I'd say that this was a 4-star experience. However, I don't want to be "that guy" that gives this new restaurant its first sub-5 star rating. Also, I have a soft spot in my heart for the original Pei's Mandarin over on 6th Street. That was a regular destination for us when I still lived here, and on our visits back to the area we would often go back. So when I learned that this is the next iteration of Pei's, I knew that I wanted to give it a try. The new menu is relatively simple and easy to understand, classified by sauce/flavor rather than meat or vegetable category. That is, instead of having a chicken or pork section of the menu, you can choose from "Mongolian" or "princess" or "General Tao's", and then pick your protein (beef, shrimp, tofu). We ordered takeout, which was a bit problematic at first. The first half dozen times I tried to call, the phone would ring but then would convert to a busy signal. For a while we wondered whether the restaurant was still in operation. We considered choosing a different place, but I was committed to checking this place out and decided to just get in my car and start the 20 minute drive, and I would just place my order when I arrived. However, about 5 minutes into my drive I was able to get through and place the order. I did have just a teeny bit of trouble finding the place, because currently the sign for the former restaurant is what's visible from the road. There is a temporary canvas sign hanging below it, so as I pulled up close I could see that I made it to the right destination. In our takeout boxes that evening were: Orange shrimp - nice plump breaded shrimp coated in a sweet and tangy orange sauce. As is often the case with these kinds of dishes, there was more cornstarch than necessary, but it was a good bite. Chicken chow mein - a fairly standard dish, but pretty well-executed. The chicken was tender but the dish could used some more vegetables. It was cooked with a brown sauce that made the flavor a little difficult to distinguish from our other two dishes, but I appreciated that it wasn't too salty either. General Tao's pork - be advised that even though this is not labeled as a spicy dish, there is a little bit of heat. Flavor-wise, it seemed to be similar to chow mein and the tofu dish, just with a little kick to it. I liked the mix of vegetables in this dish, but the pork was perhaps a little overcooked and slightly tough. Broccoli tofu - as already mentioned, the flavor was similar to the pork and noodle dish. This isn't necessarily a criticism but it wasn't possible to determine the similarities in advance based on the menu description. To be certain, the other flavor options do make themselves clear. In any case, this tofu dish was my favorite of the evening. So, this was an enjoyable and nostalgic experience for me. Glad to see that the Pei family is back in the game, and I'm looking forward to getting food here again when my path takes me back to CR. read more

The best chinese food I have ever had, Beijing and Panda aren't even in the same ball park. Everything is so authentic, especially the recipes. I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp and the shrimp was way over cooked. Like a deep fat fried little pud of leather. I also had an egg roll and the cabbage was very coarsely cut and all of it wanted to come out on the first bite. I can only judge based on this one meal so maybe the cook was having a bad night. read more
