    Sichuan Chicken
    Jackie J.

I was waiting for my car to be ready for pickup at a friend's mechanic shop and I walked into SuYu Pei on 16th Ave SW for lunch at 1:15 today (Thursday) and was greeted immediately and told I could sit wherever I'd like. Not even 20 seconds later my waiter, Leo, showed up and told me about the lunch specials: For $10, you can choose from a large list of lunch items, each including an entree, side of rice, and a cheese Rangoon! He could tell I was stuck with all of the choices so he asked me what kinds of things I normally liked and recommended his favorite dish, so that's what I chose. I ordered the Sichuan with chicken, but you can also order it with beef, shrimp or tofu. I'm not lying when I say the food came out, piping hot, in about three minutes. Anyone who knows me knows I love sauce. I didn't have to get any extra sauce for this bad boy, it was sauuuuucy! The white rice was nice and sticky, the way it's supposed to be, and the cheese Rangoon was crispy on the edges and soft and all the way filled in the middle. Leo was so knowledgeable about the menu and fun to talk to, not to mention quick at noticing and asking for refills or if I needed anything else. I even found out that we knew a lot of the same people and we talked and laughed about that fact for a few minutes. After he brought me a box for the rest of my food, I told him my car was getting worked on at a shop nearby so I might sit a while longer if that was ok, and he looked concerned and told me the area wasn't super great for walking and asked me if I needed a ride back to the shop! Talk about customer service! I'm currently still sitting in the booth at SuYu Pei, but if I didn't want to be, I could be in and out in 20 minutes easily. With the amazing customer service, super tasty food, and quick delivery times, If you're looking for somewhere to stop on your lunch break, this is definitely the place!

Simple atmosphere. Nothing fancy but the food quality is very good, hot, and so fast. Madi was my server and she gave the best service. i went there on a Wednesday between6-6:30 and the place was pretty full but everything was good and fast. This is the mid Western United States so authentic chinese food is difficult to find at best and especially getting authentic chinese ingredients is even more difficult but they dk a great job regardless of what some reviews say the quality of food is excellent. Thanks to Madi and the Chef! Great job!

Mongolian beef. With white rice. Order was plentiful.

Walked in, greeted, ordered take out, they was quick and the food was hot. Great, welcoming atmosphere.

Tried the Shanghai Style Spring rolls for the first time. Couple of mini tomahawks showed up in that wax paper bag. I mean I'm over here looking at a maki roll with pieces of tuna so big it looks like they wrapped a roll of nickels in rice and nori. Their level of quality is has gotten so high I'm not sure they're capable of making a mistake let alone a bad dish. 03/08 Update New week. New order from the folks on the SW side. I've admittedly had this arrow in my quiver for a while but can't drop another review too soon and throw exclusive vibes. Don't get me wrong I have strong feelings but I am also low-key into Pho House. What can I say? I guess I'm a House guy. Anyhow, had an eye doctor appointment down the street (shoutout Dr. Fitz. SW side legend in the eye health space) so it was no brainer takeout time. Snuck the order in quick after battling through the little air puff machine. Food was ready in 20 minutes. Somehow you can get speed, quality, and value under one roof. It's immaculate. Since we're here it's probably the right time to discuss depth because this menu has a lot of it. In the interest of transparency I did have the Tuna Maki roll again. I have it every time. It's simple and it's beautiful. If you're the reading type and get deep enough into the menu you'll find the find Pad Thai. You might be thinking to yourself, "Are they really this agile?!" If you asked I think you already know the answer to the question. Order the Pad Thai. Trust me. And while you're at it grab a Shrimp Tempura roll, too. The eel sauce will have you in your feelings after one bite.

We tried their snow-aged sake this time (yes, aged in snow for three years!) and it was incredible--smooth, clean, and unlike anything else you'll find around here. As always, the sashimi was fresh, beautifully plated, and melt-in-your-mouth good. We mentioned we were celebrating a special event, and they surprised us with the cutest orange "bear" fruit carving. It's that kind of thoughtful, personal touch that makes this place unforgettable. I can never resist their Taiwanese popcorn chicken--crispy, tender, and packed with flavor--and the Three Cup Chicken tasted incredibly authentic. You can really tell this place is run by owners who care about getting it right, both in taste and presentation. Warm ambiance, kind service, and dishes that actually taste like home--Sushiya is a rare gem in the Midwest.

Sushiya, on the other hand, is the go-to spot. The flavors here are superior in every way. The seating inside is limited, but you can watch the sushi chefs working on the line, which is fun to see. It's clear they handle a lot of online orders because they were constantly busy. There's also a kitchen in the back for cooked dishes, though it's not visible from the dining area. Everything we tried was delicious, and I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. I especially enjoyed the lunch portion of the Katsu Don--it had a lot of onions, but I didn't mind. I did ask for extra spicy mayo for my two deep-fried sushi rolls, as they were a bit bland on their own. The spicy mayo seemed house-made, with far more spices than I've seen at other sushi restaurants, and it was genuinely spicy, which was a nice surprise. The restaurant itself was quiet, aside from my best friend's child having a little meltdown at the end of the meal when his food wasn't coming fast enough. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd happily return.

Located in a mall, it looks unassuming. There were about 7 tables inside and many more tables on the outside in the mall. I ordered the jjampbong (seafood noodle soup), which is a common dish in Korean owned Chinese restaurants. It was delicious and spicy. I really liked how you could still taste some of the char from some of the ingredients being flash cooked in a wok before being added to the soup. I have to say this might have been my favorite experience of eating jjampbong, and I've had some really good ones in Los Angeles. I came back the following day for lunch again. This time I ordered the baby clam thin noodle soup. Another hit! The flavor of the soup base was spot on, and the clams were already taken out of the shell, which made it more convenient to eat. I would definitely order both again if I visit Iowa City again. The food and service were excellent. The owner checked up on me to make sure everything was good.
