I ordered TOI for my proverbial last meal because I was looking for a fight and the folks in that kitchen stand there every day throwing haymaker after haymaker. They don't miss when they swing. You know it and so do I. Hand up accountability - I ordered food for a party of one this evening. Without a doubt my DoorDash driver thought there was a family of four on the other end. We all know that's why we have them leave the order outside. No rational person wants to feel the searing gaze of judgment. Since we're being honest I think more people should know that you can DoorDash an ice cream cake from DQ. Do with that what you will. And listen when the food is this good it's not your fault if you can't decide what to get any just get one of everything. Every now and again the kitchen does get a little loosey goosey with the spice level and we just have to accept that. Every one of us knows the game we're playing when we order Indian Food. Taste of India offers you a good choices of India food. They have some traditional options you can choose from which is good. The vegetarian selection is great. The service was good and the team in the back is good and quick. The portions are nice size and the Flavor of the food is good. The atmosphere is great to sit and dine in. read more

I am re-igniting my love for Indian food... I really don't know why, but in the last few years I have gone from indulging in Indian food at least once a month, to not remembering the last time I had it. Well, last night my husband reminded me that it was an option... and BOY was it delicious. We've been to Taste of India before, and now I can't wait to come again after being reminded of their delicious offerings. We ordered two curry dishes (masala dal and chicken korma) and some naan to share, perfect for a dinner for two -- plus a next-day lunch for one! We also ordered the chicken pakora for our three-year-old, or as we told her "spicy nuggets," which actually weren't that spicy and she ate happily! On top of the yummy food, we also like the chill casual atmosphere that made us feel comfortable bringing our child. We will be back! read more

Again a rating that isn't quite 5-star but not 4-star either, 4 1/2 stars is fine for a restaurant I always come back for. Over the years the quality and flavors have waxed and waned a bit, this time it's a little down. Mango lassi - prepackaged, overly sweet, I need to remember to stop ordering these here. Naan - light, fluffy, chewy, slight brown char, loved it. Jasmine rice - similar to the naan, light, fluffy, basic rice, no spices for flavor or savoriness. Perfect. Samosas - tasted like northern Indian/Nepalese spice but without the chickpeas. Incidentally, I'm not sure there were more than about 5 peas in the combined chaat of the two samosas. Butter chicken - lacked the depth of flavor normally associated with the dish. It had the spice, it had the light sweetness but it was missing something, not sure what it was. My friend ordered the lamb biryani and he enjoyed it, though he's not a fan of raita in general, but it was good too. The chutneys, cilantro and tamarind, are always good, this time is no different. The service here is always fast and friendly and the restaurant itself is always warm and inviting. Bathrooms are clean too. Overall a positive experience as usual, this is just one of those wane times that happens, no biggie. I'll be back. read more

I went here on Saturday for their Lunch buffet. Not only was the atmosphere amazing so was the food. Everything was so delicious especially the garlic naan. I do wish the food was spicier, as some foods seemed like they should be spicy but weren't. Other than that it was amazing read more

Ownership changed in 2022. Before this switch, this place was one of my fav places for North Indian food. However, after the change in ownership, the food isn't all that great. However, compared to Taj Mahal, which is one of the oldest Indian restaurant in Cedar Rapids and has terrible food, Taste of India's food is amazing! As for the music, they are probably playing the same instrumental music CD since last 9 yrs but its low key and doesn't interrupt conversations. I'll still keep going to this restaurant, I like the food. But I will stick with the regular food order of Paneer Bhurji or Butter paneer masala and Naan. read more

The staff were so attentive and pleasant. We must have encountered four different workers who each seemed free to be themselves and brought great interaction to the table. The food is usually good. However do not expect service here. Apparently you cannot order Tandoori chicken or any dishes that take longer time to cook if it's past their close time. They close lunch at 2:30, we tried ordering Tandoori chicken at 2pm but they refused to cook it because they close at 2:30 regardless that they are open & that it is only 5 minutes past close with people still here eating likely after 2:30. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but the person in our party has health issues and can only order tandoori due to their restrictive diet. I've never been in a place that refused to cook a dinner well before closing time due to the dish being cooked 5 minutes longer than their closed time. Pretty ridiculous! read more

I've heard people list Taste of India as a reason to live in Cedar Rapids and I'm inclined to agree. An expansive, delicious menu awaits you with consistently good service. I've never been to India but I've heard the food is authentic. I haven't been to the buffet in a couple years. I remember it being quite good, but if you're hoping for some spiciness, you'd be better off going to Taj Mahal's buffet. There's also this server there who puts his all into it. As he drops food on your table he says stuff like "Mulligatawny soup? Oooh yeah" or quietly sings "rice rice baby." He's basically a national treasure. Rice is included with entrees but their naan is definitely worth checking out. Portions are lovely, closer to 1.5-2 whole meals, especially if you get an appetizer. Lately every time I visit TOI I am even a bigger fan of them. There are couple of incidents I would like to share. First one is CR faced an insane storm last one where CR community lost power for atleast a week and in some cases(like mine) we lost for over 11 days. And guess what TOI came up with an idea to feed CR folks irrespective of who is coming in. They were preparing fresh food everyday for over 250-300 peeps of CR. That to with out power. They had a huge successful drive which was thanked and appreciated by everyone. I myself was going in continuously for 5 days for both lunch& dinner to get food. Sushil and Vikas and all of TOI team thank you for the service during the time of the need. The second thing I wanted to share was that I am unsure they mention it anywhere but they have special pots pans spatulas and PEOPLE for cooking veg food. Absolutely fantastic! This place has it all; great food, atmosphere and service. Food-Of course, Indian cuisine. They do it right! Lots of curry and other spices in generous portions. Authentic Indian food cooked to perfection. The menu is extensive, but I will give a few examples; the Curry Chicken is great and can be customized (like all their dishes) with the level of spice ("heat level") from non spicy to medium to high. Like most of their dishes, it is served with a medium sized bowl of rice, so you will not go home hungry. The butter chicken is similar to the curry spice, just with less intense spices. They have a whole list of bread products. The ones we tried were flat breads, some plain, others had things like garlic cooked within them and served with incredible sauces. The atmosphere is nice. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and gives an "Indian" feel to it. The service is great. In addition to highly attentive wait staff, they have extra staff, who constantly check on you to make sure your water and other drinks are full. I don't think I have ever been in any other restaurant with a more attentive wait staff. read more

Wow. I mean, wow. This place was amazing. We started off by ordering the chai tea. This is a drink which I get nearly every coffee shop I go to. I can say without a doubt that this chai tea was absolutely incredible with just the right amount of spice... fine, I will say it. This was the best I've ever had. We started off with the paneer tikka. I had never had that dish before but it will now be something I order every chance I get. To think that something as simple as sliced cottage cheese could have such an incredible taste... where have you been all my life? Now, onto the main course. Of course, we had to get an order of naan. The naan had wonderful flavor without overpowering any of the other foods. The butter chicken was mouthwatering and the chicken vindaloo provided a perfect spicy kick to the meal. This may have just become my go to place in Cedar Rapids for dinner. The Mon-Fri lunch specials are dependable, affordable, and more than enough for lunch and leftovers.
