Samosa Naan Butter Chicken Basmati Rice

Again a rating that isn't quite 5-star but not 4-star either, 4 1/2 stars is fine for a restaurant I always come back for. Over the years the quality and flavors have waxed and waned a bit, this time it's a little down. Mango lassi - prepackaged, overly sweet, I need to remember to stop ordering these here. Naan - light, fluffy, chewy, slight brown char, loved it. Jasmine rice - similar to the naan, light, fluffy, basic rice, no spices for flavor or savoriness. Perfect. Samosas - tasted like northern Indian/Nepalese spice but without the chickpeas. Incidentally, I'm not sure there were more than about 5 peas in the combined chaat of the two samosas. Butter chicken - lacked the depth of flavor normally associated with the dish. It had the spice, it had the light sweetness but it was missing something, not sure what it was. My friend ordered the lamb biryani and he enjoyed it, though he's not a fan of raita in general, but it was good too. The chutneys, cilantro and tamarind, are always good, this time is no different. The service here is always fast and friendly and the restaurant itself is always warm and inviting. Bathrooms are clean too. Overall a positive experience as usual, this is just one of those wane times that happens, no biggie. I'll be back.

The place was clean and servers were professional. I ordered the lamb vindaloo with medium spice level. The meat was tender and the flavors were very delicious. The cubed potatoes in the dish balanced the texture and flavors of the gravy and lamb. I will come back to try something different the next time I am in the area.

The service is great and food is delicious and authentic. The ambiance gives the Indian vibe the minute you walk in. Would recommend this place for sure

Ownership changed in 2022. Before this switch, this place was one of my fav places for North Indian food. However, after the change in ownership, the food isn't all that great. However, compared to Taj Mahal, which is one of the oldest Indian restaurant in Cedar Rapids and has terrible food, Taste of India's food is amazing! As for the music, they are probably playing the same instrumental music CD since last 9 yrs but its low key and doesn't interrupt conversations. I'll still keep going to this restaurant, I like the food. But I will stick with the regular food order of Paneer Bhurji or Butter paneer masala and Naan.

The food was delicious. Our waiter was very sweet and prompt with lots of cuisine related jokes. The seating was fine nothing spectacular but overall a wonderful place to eat!

Absolutely delicious food, I am always grateful for the plethora of vegetarian options. Also appreciate that when I ask for no spice here, I get a truly mild dish that is still packed with flavor. The service was great. Nice, clean atmosphere.

I feel like it's about time I update my review since this is still my favorite restaurant in Iowa, and the reason I gave it a 4 was due to the fact that the service used to leave a lot to be desired. I love this restaurant, and the food is so good that I'd probably go eat it even if someone slapped me every time I walked through the door. The service has really become good the last few years, and the employees seem to be enjoying their jobs, which always makes me happy to see. The restaurant is still beautiful, and I don't know what I was talking about in my last review. The butter chicken is probably my favorite restaurant dish ANYWHERE I've been.

The soup and bread in particular? Total show-stealers. Uniquely delicious, and deeply satisfying. Applause-worthy. But then... the intermission. Despite pre-ordering, our meal arrived a full 30 minutes late. A delay so predictable, it might as well be part of the script. From what I've heard, this isn't a one-time twist--it's a recurring subplot. And the response from management? Less "We're so sorry" and more "This is just how the story goes." Here's the plot twist: I'd still come back. The food is that good. But sadly, the rest of my family won't be returning for an encore. Five stars for flavor, minus two for timing and tone. This place could be a blockbuster--but someone needs to fix the third act.

Seriously, this place can help. Try their Rasam soup, a little spicy-for some, but full of so much flavor!!! Didn't expect much from the veg noodles but again, packed full of flavor! Lastly I chose masala dosa which came with two different sauces of choice. All of it was superb and didn't break the bank. Trying more of their food next time.

Masala is also very good as is the buffet next to Englert Theatre; but when it was snowing and I wanted somewhere quick on the west side, I saw they had their own website so I placed a to go order. The butter chicken was very good. The sauce was authentic, although the consistency was a little watery. The rice it came with was very fresh. The standout was the chicken Mommo appetizer, which looks like an Japanese/Asian dumpling, but it's traditional to North Indian and Nepalese cuisine. Overall the portion of chicken with rice, the dumpling and an order or roti was $30. Could have been cheaper but fed 3 people even though it's an American portion of 1. The roti was not good. I'd try the naan next time. Hence the 4 stars and the butter chicken sauce was too watery like a soup.

I ordered delivery one Thursday evening and got the chicken tikka masala (spicy) and butter chicken (medium spicy) as well as a duo of vegetarian samosas and some naan. Food came on time and freshly made, it was piping hot! The spice level was appropriate on the two main entrees I ordered-- though I may go spicer on the butter chicken next time. I was delighted by the samosas. Divine. Compared to other Indian must-haves in the area, I think the pricing is a bit steep for the amount of food you get. Exotic India is mouth wateringly good! I can't wait to try more on their menu.

I thought that I had posted this review back when I wrote it in January. Apparently I had not…read more Since I wrote this I have verified that the chicken entree I mention in the review was chicken 555. I have also tried a lot more items from here, which have all been fantastic. Those items are chicken biryani, chicken curry, chili paneer, multiple kinds of dosa, and a bunch of things they've given me samples of. Anyway, here is the review that I thought I posted: I tried Leela's Kitchen for the first time tonight, and I absolutely loved it! For those who don't know, Leela's Kitchen is a small take-out South Indian restaurant tucked inside of the Amoco gas station at the corner of Blair's Ferry and C Avenue. I tried a lot of things, and I didn't know what most of them were, but I'm going to try my best to provide what little information I can about the things I had. My favorite thing was a dish of chunks of chicken lightly sauced with a very flavorful sauce. I had asked for the chili chicken, which they were out of, and the guy who took my order recommended this and said it was kind of like chicken 65. It was out of this world! My second favorite thing was the masala dosa. I actually ate it with the sauce that came with my wife's samosas, because I absolutely loved that sauce, and I thought it went great with the dosa. (I think it's tamarind sauce?) I don't usually like samosas, but I thought my wife's somasas were better than what I'm used to. I also got butter chicken and rice for our daughters. One really loved it, but said it was a little spicier than she's used to, but not too spicy. (She's 12. So, she's not someone who eats a lot of spicy food.) Our other daughter didn't seem super impressed with the butter chicken, but she didn't dislike it. I should mention something about spice. I'm not sure about this, but I got the impression that the spice levels just are what they are (as opposed to how some places ask you to pick a spice level). The reason I think that is that the guy who took my order seemed genuinely concerned that the chicken was going to be too spicy for me. It wasn't too spicy, but my thought is that if they were able to adjust the spice level, he would have just had them adjust it instead of being worried about whether it was too spicy for me. I actually prefer when places just serve things at one spice level, though. If I'm going to try an item, I want to try it the way it's supposed to be. Restaurants don't feel like they need to ask my salt level, sugar level, garlic level, etc. I like when a restaurant just makes things the way they're supposed to be made. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal from Leela's, and will definitely be back!
