This place is a hidden gem. Yes, it's American Chinese, not "authentic". That said, it's well prepared, fresh and very fast. It's a family run place and has been in the same place for 11 years now. We've tried it twice now and it's been excellent both times. Sadly we live only 2 miles away and have never tried before now because it doesn't have any curb appeal (being in a very small strip mall). Dinners are generous and not expensive. Service is fast, typically around 10 minutes. We ordered several shrimp dishes and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the shrimp they are using. These are easily 16-21 range shrimp. Actual "wok hei" on the lo mein! I'm giving them 5 stars for where we are. If we were in Chicago or San Francisco there the competition is a notch above it would probably be a 3 or 4 star. I've visited this location a few times and I can say from all the other Chinese food restaurants I've been to here in Cedar Rapids this one is by far the best. From the outside I wasn't sure but my boyfriend gave it a try and really liked it so I did too. Everything is decently priced and the Lady and her husband are friendly enough and quick too. Today I had ordered the Dinner Sweet and Sour Chicken with fried rice and the orange chicken dinner with fried rice incl uding 2 egg rolls. And they were both delicious! We get ECB couple time per month. It's always been good. Today was the exception. It was horrible. Noodles to soft. Chicken super chewey. Frjed rice looked like steam rice with grocery store seasoning added. Crab Rangoons that have maybe 1/4 teaspoon of filling. It was mostly won ton wrapper. It wasn't like this before. I made a huge mistake coming here. I ordered crab rangoons and beef lo mein. The crab rangoons were completely fried to a crisp and lacked in filling and flavor. The beef in the lo mein was not good. It had a horrible consistency- we're talking stringy and not tender whatsoever. The meat flavor just was not there. The noodles tasted rather bitter and had an off taste and there were only onions and cabbage in it. The onions even tasted weird, not close to regular onions. I really don't like to give bad reviews but if you are looking for good beef lo mein and crab rangoons this is not your place. read more

I received a message from the business stating the the reason that my food quality was poor was that Chinese food should be eaten fresh and that my taking it out of the restaurant was the issue. I ate it at my friend's home which was less than five minutes away. If they believe that caused undercooked food then why have a takeout menu? read more

Really nice people with quick good food. Sesame chicken and steamed dumplings are the best.

I have gotten take out from here many times, and the food is always delicious. It is a family run business and the meals are prepared fresh. The servings are generous. I love eating here. read more

Fast delivery but their food is hit or miss. Had their beef lo mein delivered & it was delicious! Sadly, next time I ordered it I'm pretty sure it was left over from their lunch buffet; soggy & greasy. Haven't been inside so can't comment on the environment or service. read more

I have gone to East China Buffet on Mt Vernon Rd for years. I'd recommend it to everyone, it used to be my favorite in town until recently. About 4 weeks ago, I ordered dinner to be picked up. (I always order either Moo Goo Gai Pan or Hot Braised Chicken with white rice). The Moo Goo Gai Pan tasted almost greasy, the veggies weren't bright and crisp, and the color brownish. It was gross, so gross that it went in the trash. I had noticed that they had changed ownership between my visit prior to this visit. Weds 7/20/2016 I decided to give it another try thinking that maybe I caught the cook on a bad day. I was looking forward to having my good ol favorite place back! This time I ordered Hot Braised Chicken. I got it home and there was barely any smell to it. Once again, it tasted greasy, there were TONS of green peppers but barely any mushrooms in it and the 4 that I found were cut up so small there was really no point. Not only did it taste greasy, but the chicken tasted and smelled funky. My college age son came over that night and even he wouldn't eat it and he will eat ANYTHING!! This dinner too went in the trash, Sorry East China Buffet, I gave you the benefit of the doubt after the first disappointment however, you don't get to burn me a 3rd time. We have visited East China for several years and have always called it "our Chinese" till last night. The wonton soup was quite sweet not salty as usual and the Mongolian Beef was about as bland as I've ever had ( that was with the two star hot request). We noticed different people serving, has this place been sold? We probably won't be back, our loss. read more
