My wife and I shared a Mango Chicken Rice Bowl at the Des Moines World Food and Music Festival earlier this month. The rice was pretty good, but our chicken was very grisly and fatty, and while the flavor was OK, it didn't make up for the sub-par poultry. From seeing reviews elsewhere it appears we may be the outlier and just got a bad serving, but it just wasn't very good.

This place deserves way better than a 2-star review, so it is pleasure to include my own and boost the ratings. I didn't even look at Yelp before we went and I think I'm actually glad. We happened to be driving past when we noticed Caribbean Kitchen in a parking lot off of Mount Vernon Rd. We had intended to hike and then grab dinner on the way home, but decided to whip around and take advantage of this food truck opportunity instead. I was immensely grateful for a more unique option for takeout during the pandemic! We took a quick look at the menu and placed our order as the crowd started to develop around us. I believe this is a husband and wife duo and they were very friendly and accommodating. It started to rain while we were in line so we rushed home to devour our food. And I mean devour! I opted for mango chicken rice bowl with jerk sauce and my fiancé had the jerk chicken sandwich meal. Its quite a sandwich too! He said it was amazing and was so full he could barely eat his macaroni after. I was a little less impressed, particularly with the rice and beans though because the chicken was awesome! I just wish it had been a little larger portion size. That said, I made sure to grab a card and look them up because we would absolutely eat here again. We overlooked the special of the day which was essentially jerk rib tips so hopefully they'll have that next time too.

Best Jamaican food in Cedar Rapids! I'm a regular customer that's had the entire menu and I can say everything there is amazing!

Given that we were late in the day, there were also a few things on the menu that weren't available such as the yam fufu but that's okay. Had I did not realize that this place serves Ethiopian food in addition to other African and Caribbean food so I was absolutely overjoyed to order some familiar foods off of the menu! My husband had the tibs with potatoes and carrots and beets. He found the peppers to be fresh and bright and delicious, and the beets were tenderly cooked. He definitely was regretting not asking for it to be spicy because this was not spicy at all! A great point for dipping your toes into Ethiopian food without the intense spices and flavors that it is known for. I had the signature spinach and beef with cassava fufu and it was quite spicy and very flavorful! The spinach was obviously very fresh and high quality and retained a beautiful bright color of green. I am hoping to come back with more people earlier in the day to try out more of their food!

Every dish burst with flavor, and the seasoning was outstanding. Friendly service. My only complaint is that the bathroom can be difficult to reach, especially for those with mobility challenges.

I tried Koffi Grill today, and I really enjoyed my meal!…read more I know nothing about African food, or Caribbean food. So, I don't really know how to describe what I had. My meal was beef kebabs with yellow rice. The beef kebabs were incredible, but if I describe them, I don't think I'm going to make them sound very good. The beef chunks were kind of dry, but it seemed like they were supposed to be a little dry, and I don't think they would have been as good if they weren't. They had an amazing dry spice rub on the outside. If the beef had been jucier, I think that would have totally changed the experience of the spice rub. I don't know whether that makes sense, but hopefully you try it, enjoy it, and agree with me. My side was yellow rice. At first, I thought the rice was really bland, but there was some sort of seasoning in it that kind of builds on you the more you eat. It's not at all of a hot spice type of seasoning. It was a very good meal. I would highly recommend it.
