I've had barbecue all over the country--from Georgia to Tennessee to Texas--and I can honestly say this was the best brisket and bbq pork ribs I've ever had. The brisket was perfectly cooked: incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with natural flavor. What really stood out was the seasoning. It enhanced the meat without overpowering it, allowing the rich, smoky beef flavor to shine through with every bite. The customer service was just as impressive. Everyone was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and attentive, making the entire experience even more memorable. Outstanding food paired with exceptional hospitality is a rare combination - a gem hidden in Cedar Rapids. Highly recommend the place if you're ever in town.

From the minute you park you get a whiff of the smoker with apple wood ! My favorite smell ever. The food was also the very best I can remember having. The brisket egg roll was surprisingly my favorite thing I tried. The ribs a close second. Chicken wings did not even need sauce!!

Cool Place, Good Food, Good Music. Only thing I suggest is Jalapeños, they didn't offer any. My favorite, the Brisket Egg Rolls. Mac & Cheese was just ok. The Burger was good but I like a Firmer Bun. It was Good and we will go back.

If you haven't visited Midnight Smoker's new (and permanent) location.. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Simply no one in CR does it like this place. Stopped in for dinner on Saturday and the line was out the door (which consistently stayed that way while I was there for about 60 minutes). Although the line to order (YES, you order your food at the counter and then go sit down) the staff was helpful and kind. If you're a fan of pork belly you MUST go on Saturday, it's only a special on this day. I tried a little of everything and I was blown away by the quality. The best items in my opinion: 1. Smoked Mac and Cheese 2. Pork Belly Sandwich 3. Ribs 4. Pulled Pork You can't go wrong with any of the options though, to be clear. There was one female worker in charge of the dining room and she is AMAZING. Courteous, patient, kind and pretty hilarious too. She was quick to tell us that she can order drinks via her mobile ordering device and we don't need to stand in line again for another drink.. much appreciated since it was SO BUSY! Top notch employee that I look forward to seeing again! The owner was also out in the dining space conversing with guests which is always nice to see. He even offered our table some special sauce not featured (which I don't want to put here because... secret) which was surprising and such a treat. The sauce was amazing, but who's surprised by that? I have been a fan of Midnight Smoker since their location in Newbo and I am so HAPPY this place is not only excelling, but are pushing boundaries and staying true to what they love. I will absolutely be back and I hope everyone has a chance to taste this one-of-a-kind place.

Update: New location, same amazing food. This place is such a gem, and even more so now with its new location! The team here did an incredible job with the concept and indoor ambiance. Walk up counter allows for quick and friendly service, and delicious fresh BBQ.

    The menu.

I all but wept when Q-Dogs closed. But as the saying goes, a window closes and a door opens. Midnight Smoker is an open door in the BBQ landscape of not only CR but Eastern Iowa and all of the Midwest! Anyone can do good pulled pork. It takes skill to do good brisket. Midnight Smoker does EXCELLENT brisket. The pulled pork was excellent too, as were the seasoned potatoes (PERFECTLY fried), the smoked Mac & Cheese, and the beans were tasty too (though with a tad more kick than I prefer). Great environment. Great staff. FANTASTIC food. I hope it's Midnight forever in Cedar Rapids!

My son spotted the pork tenderloin sandwich, and that clinched the deal for us. Since moving away from Iowa, this is something that is sorely missed. It was a pretty quiet weekday lunch hour when we stopped by. There was only one other customer in front of us, and the friendly gentleman behind the counter took our order and told us that it would be about 8 minutes for our order to be ready. In addition to the tenderloin, we ordered the brisket sammich and some onion rings. We were going to eat well that day. Unfortunately, things seemed to get away from him just a little bit. The people before us had also ordered two tenderloins, but for reasons unclear he only prepared their order instead of breading and frying all three of ours at once. Then some guy from DoorDash or GrubHub showed up to pick up an order, and then he had to stop everything and focus on that pickup. When he returned to the people waiting, the couple in front of us was starting to get a little impatient. He finally took care of them, and turned his attention to ours. Our tenderloin was breaded and put into the fryer. He gave it us, but we had to remind him that we had also ordered the brisket and onion rings, the latter of which he had not put into the fryer. Several minutes later our order was ready, but at this point it was over 20 minutes later. Having said all that, the food was quite good. The brisket was served in thick cuts and was tender and juicy. The tenderloin was also very good, with a nice crispy texture that didn't get soggy. It was served in a basket, and I felt that it would have been better on a plate because the tenderloin is so large that it's hard to get your hands around it when it fills up the entire basket. The onion rings were disappointing, though. I was expecting much more hearty, thick rings, but they were small and somewhat uninspired. Overall, this was a fine meal with just some logistical snags that certainly can be improved upon.

The sandwich portions are generous and come with a small side portion and sliced pickles. The pulled pork comes without sauce and when we went, they only had spicy and blackberry sauce. As far as flavor, we agreed the pork was kinda dry but okay. I had the blackberry sauce, which I found runny and not so flavorful. My boyfriend had the spicy and said it was good, but the kick lingered in his mouth. My coleslaw was weak too. Overall, the location is perfect for this kind of meal. It's a reasonable price for what you get - sandwich, side, and drink. Probably great for local lunches, but we wouldn't go out of our way.

They offer huge sandwiches which include 6 oz. meat, one side and a drink for $7.50 or larger platters for around $11. They never keep me waiting long and they have many BBQ sauces to choose from including some interesting ones such as cherry habanero and blackberry. They are usually located around the corner of 7th Ave. and 44th St. in Marion behind Arnold's motor supply. So if you find yourself in the area around lunchtime it's definitely worth the stop!

Well, I guess my 500th Yelp review is as good a time as any. I don't eat potato salad, but I have to start with the potato salad because my wife loves Willie Ray's potato salad so much that I actually order it as my side just to give to her. So, I guess it's pretty good. I'm pretty sure I've had every entree at Willie Ray's. I think their best entree might actually be their barbecue chicken, but I also love their ribs. A lot of places make ribs that I think are too fatty. My guess is the ribs are the same before they go in the smoker, and the ones I consider too fatty just haven't fully rendered. Regardless, the ribs at Willie Ray's never seem too fatty, or too greasy. They're always cooked just right, and have a great flavor. The entree I get the most is probably the pulled pork. It's also very good. It's not as good as the ribs, but I usually go to Willie Ray's for lunch, and something about ribs just makes me sleepy. Their brisket is awesome, too. They seem to run out of that pretty quickly, though. If you ever go there and they have a side called chicken ro-mac, definitely try it. They don't seem to have it often. So, you don't want to pass up an opportunity to try it. Based on the name, and the flavor, I'm assuming it has Rotel tomatoes in it. Other than that, it's mac and cheese with pulled chicken. I highly recommend it. Anyway, I've never had a bad meal there, and I've had a lot of meals there.

First impressions were a bit confusing--the entrance makes you feel like you're walking into an office building. There's a door to the right with signage for what seems to be a sister bar that's only open on limited nights, but the actual restaurant is straight back. Once inside, the space is large and open, with plenty of room between tables and a sizable bar area. I sat at the bar and learned about their Whiskey Wednesday specials, which included several types of Old Fashioneds and whiskey flights. While it sounded intriguing, I opted not to partake. They also offer daily drink special themes. The menu is eclectic, with a mix of Cajun, Italian, and American fare. I went with the Cacio e Pepe with Elephant Ear (Orcchiette) pasta, and added shrimp along with a half wedge salad as a premium side. The pasta itself was delicious--perfectly cooked with a rich, peppery flavor. However, I wish the server had mentioned that the shrimp was Cajun-seasoned. While great on its own, it slightly overpowered the pasta. The wedge salad was a bit of a letdown--the lettuce was watery, which diluted the overall flavor. The dish also came with garlic bread, which was yummy. Service was outstanding--attentive, friendly, and efficient. Unfortunately, it was hard to get a real read on the restaurant's vibe because it was pretty empty on a Wednesday night.
