Cedar Rapids very own TENDERNISM!!! Don't sleep on BACKYARD BBQ! We stopped at Backyard BBQ late afternoon around 2pm so it was pretty empty. Lily was our waitress and she was so kind! We had our one year old son with us and she gave us orange slices to snack on while we put in our order. The backyard decor and vibe was so cool and our little one was dancing to the music playing. The food: *Our son has an egg allergy and we ordered the fried rice combo with no egg and they were able to accommodate.* Combo 1: Fried rice with 3 ribs, side of fried rice and baked beans. Combo 2: Fried rice with 1/3 brisket, egg rolls and waffle fries. The ribs and brisket were absolutely melt-in-your-mouth perfectly tender and juicy in a way that's hard to find. Seasoned perfectly I didn't even reach for bbq sauce at first. The fried rice was on point with a rich, satisfying umami flavor that had us going back for more. We wished we ordered more. The baked beans surprised me in the best way. I'm used to the classic sweet style, but these leaned savory with a subtle black pepper kick that made them stand out. Still totally delicious, just a pleasant twist on tradition. And the egg rolls? Don't sleep on them. Fresh out of the fryer, impossibly crispy, and generously stuffed with a great mix of pork, cabbage, carrot, and vermicelli noodles. They were honestly the kind of egg roll you think about after you leave. Highly recommend, this place delivers on all fronts!

    Brisket, and two sides

Excellent food great place. I wanted to try B BBQ and I'm glad I did. Ordered 1/4LB of brisket and two sides. It came to me in no time, the sides were great, the beans were to die for. They were lightly Smokey tasting and had pork cooked in with them, coleslaw was fresh. The brisket was fork cut not overdone and perfectly done. I am not picky about my brisket but this was like prime rib tender and moist. Highly recommend Backyard Barbecue. Very nice bar and interior, I will be back with friends and family!

My son spotted the pork tenderloin sandwich, and that clinched the deal for us. Since moving away from Iowa, this is something that is sorely missed. It was a pretty quiet weekday lunch hour when we stopped by. There was only one other customer in front of us, and the friendly gentleman behind the counter took our order and told us that it would be about 8 minutes for our order to be ready. In addition to the tenderloin, we ordered the brisket sammich and some onion rings. We were going to eat well that day. Unfortunately, things seemed to get away from him just a little bit. The people before us had also ordered two tenderloins, but for reasons unclear he only prepared their order instead of breading and frying all three of ours at once. Then some guy from DoorDash or GrubHub showed up to pick up an order, and then he had to stop everything and focus on that pickup. When he returned to the people waiting, the couple in front of us was starting to get a little impatient. He finally took care of them, and turned his attention to ours. Our tenderloin was breaded and put into the fryer. He gave it us, but we had to remind him that we had also ordered the brisket and onion rings, the latter of which he had not put into the fryer. Several minutes later our order was ready, but at this point it was over 20 minutes later. Having said all that, the food was quite good. The brisket was served in thick cuts and was tender and juicy. The tenderloin was also very good, with a nice crispy texture that didn't get soggy. It was served in a basket, and I felt that it would have been better on a plate because the tenderloin is so large that it's hard to get your hands around it when it fills up the entire basket. The onion rings were disappointing, though. I was expecting much more hearty, thick rings, but they were small and somewhat uninspired. Overall, this was a fine meal with just some logistical snags that certainly can be improved upon.

The pulled pork was good tasting and was served on a quality bun, however it seemed soggy from sitting in the steam table. Don't get me wrong it was still delicious. The cornbread is amazing.

The sandwich portions are generous and come with a small side portion and sliced pickles. The pulled pork comes without sauce and when we went, they only had spicy and blackberry sauce. As far as flavor, we agreed the pork was kinda dry but okay. I had the blackberry sauce, which I found runny and not so flavorful. My boyfriend had the spicy and said it was good, but the kick lingered in his mouth. My coleslaw was weak too. Overall, the location is perfect for this kind of meal. It's a reasonable price for what you get - sandwich, side, and drink. Probably great for local lunches, but we wouldn't go out of our way.

The meat has a great smokey flavor and is very tender. The baked beans have quickly become a favorite and the coleslaw is a close second. They offer huge sandwiches which include 6 oz. meat, one side and a drink for $7.50 or larger platters for around $11. They never keep me waiting long and they have many BBQ sauces to choose from including some interesting ones such as cherry habanero and blackberry. They are usually located around the corner of 7th Ave. and 44th St. in Marion behind Arnold's motor supply. So if you find yourself in the area around lunchtime it's definitely worth the stop!

First impressions were a bit confusing--the entrance makes you feel like you're walking into an office building. There's a door to the right with signage for what seems to be a sister bar that's only open on limited nights, but the actual restaurant is straight back. Once inside, the space is large and open, with plenty of room between tables and a sizable bar area. I sat at the bar and learned about their Whiskey Wednesday specials, which included several types of Old Fashioneds and whiskey flights. While it sounded intriguing, I opted not to partake. They also offer daily drink special themes. The menu is eclectic, with a mix of Cajun, Italian, and American fare. I went with the Cacio e Pepe with Elephant Ear (Orcchiette) pasta, and added shrimp along with a half wedge salad as a premium side. The pasta itself was delicious--perfectly cooked with a rich, peppery flavor. However, I wish the server had mentioned that the shrimp was Cajun-seasoned. While great on its own, it slightly overpowered the pasta. The wedge salad was a bit of a letdown--the lettuce was watery, which diluted the overall flavor. The dish also came with garlic bread, which was yummy. Service was outstanding--attentive, friendly, and efficient. Unfortunately, it was hard to get a real read on the restaurant's vibe because it was pretty empty on a Wednesday night.
