Would I eat this before leg day? Also yes. The Smothered Burrito (aka the villain arc meal) It comes out sizzling like it's announcing its presence. Completely drowned in melted cheese. Sauce everywhere. Zero shame. You cut into it and it's just layers of juicy meat, sauce, and chaos. This is not a "cute little lunch." This is a "cancel your plans and commit" situation. I have heard good things about this place so I wanted to give it a try. The place is very roomy, almost felt like I was in a school cafeteria. So, if you have a group I am sure they can accommodate. The margarita tasted a little like Mt Dew, so I guess you would say on the sweeter side. The chips were good tasted home made, and the salsa was also good, I have had better for my personal taste but it was still yummy. We had a chicken con polo (sp?) and it was good, again not our favorite in the area but still delicious and a generous portion. Staff was pleasant and I believe a manager or owner stopped by to see how we were doing which I felt was a nice touch. Good place to visit but not our regular Taco Tuesday venue. read more

Huge open seating restaurant with their full service bar and checkout separating bar seating from the main restaurant. I will never be a fan of the open seating style but I understand why places do it. We came in and there were 3 people waiting for To Go orders, while we wait, we saw at least 7 more To Go orders come and go. So apparently this place is a big To Go hub, I didn't know that. My preference will always be to sit down in a restaurant and be waited on. The staff was fast and friendly, the only minor issue with that was having to wait to pay, she dropped the check off and said she'd come back but she got lost in the liquor inventory and didn't come back - no biggie, we went up front to pay. We ordered barrel margaritas, the queso fundido (queso and chorizo) with our chips and salsa, he ordered the Quesa birria tacos and I ordered the arroz con pollo. Margaritas - they went heavy on the Gran Marnier so it was a little sweeter and had an orange flavor to it, which is fine with me. Queso fundido - good flavor but a little salty. Quesa birria tacos - my friend didn't think the consommé was anything special but he would order the tacos again. The portions were big enough to take some home. I had the consommé later and I thought it was good. Arroz con pollo - warm, good, slightly smoky flavor. Too salty so I'm wondering if the queso was the salty culprit. Seemed like the queso was on one side and not much on the other. I took part of mine home as well. Overall a good experience. Food seemed a bit salty but otherwise the flavor was good and so was the margarita. We will return. read more

I had the quesabirria tacos and a michalada. Food was amazing and the michalada was just the way I like them.

I was hearing lots of good things about their birria so had to try it. We got birria ramen and quesabirria tacos. Chips and salsa were good. The quesabirria was good but prefer them at a North Liberty joint. The ramen was pretty good but wouldn't order it again as it was too salty for me. I also wanted to try the Dubai chocolate strawberry desserts that are sold occasionally here but the timing didn't work out. Will have to come back to try at some point. read more

Service was excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpful Food was hot fresh and delicious. The salsa was some of the best I've had in a very long time. The queso on the other hand was a little bit bland. Kids had the tacos and they scarfed them down with no complaints. Their plates were basically licked clean. I had the assorted tacos, the steak and the pastor tacos were my favorites. My wife had the burrito bowl which was huge and flavorful. Everything was really good The restaurant was a bit loud which was alright for us with our kids, but I could see how that might detract from some folks. They had a sign for 2$ tacos and margaritas on Tuesdays. We'll be back to try that out for sure. There kids tacos, my assorted tacos, burrito bowl and queso came out to 64$ which is typical for a meal for my family. We all just had waters. Everyone left full! read more

Loved this place! Nice, trendy decor including a full bar and loads of art, and pub lighting. Would be a great casual first date spot. The menu is modern Mexican, with a focus on Birria but plenty of other stuff to choose from. The staff was super friendly and attentive, making sure our salsa never ran dry. One of us got a salad which was mostly toppings and delicious, another got a "stuffed birria potato" which was basically a bowl drowning in consume with mega toppings, and I got a birria chimichanga which fat and amazing. I'd go back here anytime to meet with friends or have a nice simple date. Prices were very reasonable for the massive quantity sizes. read more

The food is mediocre. I think the owners idea about having a good restaurant is atmosphere. I think the decor was all ordered from the Oriental trading company catalog, it has a really cheap feel to it. I think they mainly focus on fancy drinks? I didn't have any drinks because I don't get into the fancy ones. I'm not sure what the draw as to this place, it doesn't seem very authentic and quality made food. read more

We have been here before and the food has always been great. The staff are great and attentive. There is alot of seating, with a large bar. The parking gets difficult since it's in a strip mall. We got the Quesabirria Pizza pack. It's so good. The flavor is spot on. It comes with street corn, rice, beans, and juice for dipping. It was our meal for 2 nights. The birria tacos are seriously amazing! The meat is super tender and juicy, and the crispy tortillas make them even better. Dipping them in that rich, flavorful consommé takes it to a whole new level. Then, there's the tres leches cake. It's ridiculously moist, soaked in all three different types of milk and topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, it's sweet but not over-the-top. 2nd time today at Rio Burritos. I had the Ceviche (shrimp n fish) tower minus a sauce they pour over it. Not only is it the most exquisite display I've ever seen, but the best tasting mix and did you look at the amount? I've got left overs for sure but need to find someone to share it next time. I finally got a chance to try Rio Burritos. So, the food was fantastic. I had a burrito al pastor and an agua de limon. The burrito was cooked perfectly. The tortilla was cooked just enough to give it some color, but not burnt. The ratio of fillings was great. There was plenty of meat. Everything was very flavorful. The chunks of pork seemed a little girstly, which I've never experienced before with pork, but it oddly didn't really detract from the dish. All around, it was an excellent burrito. Also, it was gigantic. That's easy to do if you're stuffing the burrito with filler, but that wasn't the case at Rio. There was a lot of meat in the burrito, and no beans. I didn't notice rice or poatao, either. It really seemed like everything that was in that burrito was put there because it made the burrito better, not because it made the burrito bigger. That's fairly unusual with places that serve generously sized burritos. I also loved the agua de limon so much that I Googled a recipe for how to make it after my first or second sip. I have never had agua de limon before this. So, I don't know if it's always this good, or if Rio Burritos just does an exceptionally good job with it. The server was also very friendly. With all that having been said, I do have one piece of neutral feedback, and one piece of negative feedback. The neutral feedback is that Rio Burritos was not really what I expected. In my experience, when a restaurant has the name of one item in the name of the restaurant (e.g. Bob's Burgers, Jim's Sandwich Shop, etc.), I expect a QSR where you walk up to a counter, order your food, pay, and carry your food to a table. Essentially, the name made me think it would be a Panchero's type of place, where they just crank out burritos, and maybe offer a few other items. Rio Burritos isn't that. It's a legit sit down restaurant with table service, and food made to order. That's not a bad thing. It's just different than I expected. The one negative about Rio Burritos was that the service was exceptionally slow. I think I got there a little before noon, but I'm not sure. I do know that the first time I looked at my watch because things seemed to be taking a long time, it was 12:05. From 12:05, when it already seemed like things were taking a long time, it was another 35 minutes before I had my burrito. I was sitting on the side of the restaurant that was opposite the register. So, between where I was sitting, and where I paid, I think I was able to see all of the tables. I counted six tables with two people at each. I don't remember if that was including my table of two. Even if it wasn't, we're talking 7 tables, and 14 total diners. So, the slow service didn't seem to be because they were busy. The chips and salsa came right away, while the drinks didn't come until pretty close to when the food came. I wouldn't let the slow service prevent me from going back because the food was awesome, but I would let it prevent me from going back for a workday lunch, at least for dine-in. One last thing I almost forgot: I loved their chips and salsa. It seems like most CR Mexican restaurants have virtually identical salsa. You could tell just by looking at the salsa at Rio that it was different. Instead of being the bright red color of a tomato, it was reddish-brown (perhaps from roasted peppers?). It was a little spicier than the typical restaurant salsa, and I really liked it. read more

The steak taco meat was good seasoned well just wasnt a fan of the long strips I like my steak tacos more cube like shape. Steak was definitely the better taco of the 3. The Carnita had a taste like it was sitting out for a while. It wasn't fresh which I assume it was due to the kitchen closing, so we got the last of it. The rice looked dry but was surprisingly not and was pretty good. Chips and salsa were really good. The chips weren't super hard like other places, and the salsa had a very nice consistency (thick, not watery) Overall, the place was decent but not great. Yeehaw and hell yeah!! We have been here several times in the couple of months and are very excited to keep going back! First off, floors and tables are very clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The decor is not overwhelming nor is the space overly crowded. Second the menu is a good size. I LOVE birria and there are several dishes that Include it. We have tried the birria nachos and they are delicious! I look forward to trying the birria grilled cheese or birria baked potato. Finally the portions are BIG. Very shareable. Or perhaps leftovers for another meal. I suggest the quesadillas! Big. BIG. Their guacamole is AMAZING. The salsa is fantastic! Everything we have had has been one more dish to look forward to. OK, so I know this is probably gonna be an odd review. But I have to just scream from the rooftops about this. My friend Jill brought me over a Rio Burritos $2 one day old, chicken, onion, and cilantro taco. Because I'm sick she's a great friend! I am telling you something I even I told Phoebe myself because I'm friends with her on Facebook. I said I'm telling you what it is hands-down the best, Mexican food I have ever had. When she had a food truck, she used to deliver to me her tamales and those are straight up the most delicious Tamales I've ever had in my life. So I don't know if you've eaten there before but if you want to get the best like food. But Mexican food you need to visit this restaurant. I'll tell you what I know what I'm gonna be doing on Tuesdays from now on! As long as I have the cash, I'll be getting fat on Tuesday at Rio Burritos!!! Lol!!!. read more

Rio was new to the food truck rotation at our offices, but definitely a fast favorite. They offer tacos, burritos, bowls, and more. Don't forget tamales made to order. I went with a burrito because I was STARVING and the portions looked ginormous. As hungry as I was, I still wasn't able to finish mine but I sure tried lol. The resturant is very impressive , great layout and a full bar. The drinks are good The service is good . The food was kind of a miss for me . It's not bad but it's not amazing . I've been here twice the first time I had an al pastor burrito I wasn't impressed . The al pastor tasted pre cooked and warmed up . There wasn't very much meat in the burrito, it was mostly rice and beans. The second time I tried the birria tacos. They were good and they gave a realy good portion of meet. Omg, my wife and I decided to do takeout this week and we said, "why not Rio Burritos?" Had been there for a tamale & tequila class...highly recommend! Then went for dinner which was fantastic! Birria Ramen to die for! Such a great concept (having been a Hawaii local for about 20 yrs!). Then, fast forward to the other night...take out order...SO GOOD! Birria Chicken and Shredded Beef Chimichanga's with side of Queso, Salsa and Chips...some of the best Mexican food I've had out here in Iowa! This place and their owner deserves a thousand accolades!
