I ordered eight jerk chicken meals for me and my coworker. The place had a constant stream of people coming in and out which is a good sign for me. The setup is pretty simple. Order at the counter and pay at the counter, grab your food for dine in or takeout. On the bright side nobody complained about their order and it wasn't much left on the plate. Overall nice little hidden gem and I will be back to try something else. read more

The service is very friendly, the foods was excellent..the decor was a little sparse. The Fried Pork Meal and the Fried Pork Pasta Meal were our choices and they rivaled some of the best Caribbean food we've had. Pork was crispy, pasta cheesy, portions were great, the flavor was spot on! Great place to have in the area for sure! read more

I enjoyed the flavor of the oxtail, wish I had more than three small pieces. The rice and peas was average slight burnt taste to it. The wings were ok needed more flavor or the sauce they used to go on top of it. Overall extremely tasty. Need to lay off of the salt, almost too salty for the flavor of the oxtail. The service was good and the food came out quickly. I will go back to try the Red Snapper and stew chicken! read more

I was actually shocked to see a Caribbean restaurant in Iowa so I had to stop by and give it try. The wait was not bad at all only 30 minutes but I would not be surprised if people wait longer than that especially on a very busy day but it's still worth it regardless. I ordered the Oxtail stew dinner with rice and I also got the jerk cabbage. This place definitely gives you a lot of rice and plenty of Oxtail meat plus it was very delicious no disappointment at all. My first time ever trying jerk cabbage and it was really good and well prepared. My overall experience at this restaurant was good and I plan on coming back again when I'm in Cedar Rapids. read more

So my daughter and her friend from El Salvador stumbled upon this mom and pop restaurant while staying in a nearby hotel. It truly is a mom and pop shop with young parents and young children. There were plenty of people coming in and out for takeout with some tables to eat at and cartoons on the TV. I had the Jerk Chicken which had the right amount of spice for me. For some, it may not be spicy. It was accompanied by a lot of rice and beans along with smashed plantains that were of the nonsweet variety. My daughter's friend had the Chicken Fried meal and my daughter had the pasta meal with chicken. The pasta was a delicious homemade Mac and Cheese with a subtle twist of sweet yet savory pepper. I must say I sampled her Mac and Cheese a few times. The portions were large so one should not go hungry here. I appreciate the restaurant and the clientele who came in all seemed to know each other. It was a great find. read more

We enjoyed Jerk Chicken for lunch, what a great meal! The Jerk sauce was yummy, the food plentiful and delicious. We also tried the pasta - filled with cheese, chicken, some spice, better than any other pasta in town! And the Turkey Stew lunch was delectable too. Come hungry - you'll have plenty to take home! read more

I went in this restaurant to look at their menu besides what's out on their window and there was nobody in there to greet me. The kids were behind the counter playing and playing their games. Whatever they were doing. It was dirty in there, but they didn't have a menu for me to look at. I went in there to ask him a question, but there was nobody there to greet me so I take it that this is just a Colin order only so I wouldn't recommend it if they don't even have a menu for you to look at and it was dirty read more

The place was nicely detailed in African art which i enjoyed the only thing is.....i ordered my food oxtails and rice. Sat down and realized it's Africans running the joint much respect but its not authentic.the oxtails still had fat on them which is crazy and i only received maybe five. I got a whole tray of rice. If you enjoy authentic Jamaican spot they tried but its not it. Truly hope they start selling their own cultured food or nothing at all. read more

Great jerk chicken! Super friendly staff. Hot sauce was HOT! I will be back again.

The ambience isn't much - but the warm welcome and flavorful food more than make up for this hidden gem. I would go every week if I lived locally. Such a treat to taste the islands in IOWA! Family owned and operated - the island flavor, sound and love are felt in every part of this restaurant. Some might say - WAWA read more

All I have to say is WOW. I normally have multiple pictures when I make a review but we were so hungry when we picked it up and the food was so good we didn't stop and think to document it. We got the oxtail stew and chicken jerk meals. Neither my wife nor myself have ever been to the Caribbean so we can't speak about how authentic it is, but we can say how flavorful our food was. The oxtail was tender and full of amazing beef flavor that you get with oxtail. The stew was delicious. The jerk chicken was grilled PERFECTLY, tender, juicy, and delicious smoky flavor from the grill and the jerk spice. Each meal also came with 2 fried plantains which themselves didn't have much flavor, not sure if they normally do or not, but they were perfect vessels to soak up the stew and jerk sauce. Each meal came with a healthy amount of rice that was perfectly cooked and flavorful. We can't wait to go back again and try out the rest of the menu. Feel like this is a hidden gem in Cedar Rapids and more people should discover it. Absolutely delicious. Can't wait to go back. read more

Please let me clarify; I give the food five stars. The overall ambiance for dining in I would give two stars (thanks to the Bob Marley music). Wawa is basically a hole in the wall, mom and pop local restaurant with outstanding food. I tried several things; Jerk chicken-5 stars. This stuff is just great! The dinner came with plantains (2 big ones, which were also very good) and a generous portion of rice and beans. (speaking of portion sizes, nobody is going home hungry if they get one of the dinners. The portions are large and you will likely be taking some home) I also tried the home made lemonade, which is very unique and very good. I highly recommend it. They have an extensive menu with lots of entrees, side dishes and appetizers. They also have a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages. Though the food is very good, I would recommend carry-out rather than dining in. read more

Went to Wawa Caribbean Restaurant for lunch today. Everything was fantastic. Service was great and restaurant was clean. The food was amazing. The server noticed I had a Celiac cookbook with me and told me she can adjust meals to make gf. I had the oxtail soup with rice/beans and plantains. The oxtail was cooked to perfection, ready to come right off the bone without being over cooked and the broth was perfection. I also had a papaya smoothie with my lunch and it was delicious, not too sweet but just sweet enough. I would definitely go back and probably will within the next couple weeks. -- at Wawa Caribbean Restaurant. read more

The food is top notch. Don't be put off by the initial décor of the restaurant. Unfortunately they do not sell spirits or beer, I would have loved to have some Caribbean drinks with the meal. My wife and I were looking for a place to eat close to where we lived and came across Wawa on our walk around the neighborhood. The restaurant is in a small strip mall right next to the African Family Market and Hwy30 Diner (another great place to eat!). The Wawa staff is very friendly and the cook actually comes out to see the customers. The food is spicy without being overly "hot". They have take out and large portions at a reasonable price. We are defiantly going back to try some of the goat or ox tail based dishes. read more
