The Green House - Barbarella

The Green House

The Green House is my new favorite spot for cocktails-- truly a hidden (in plain sight) gem! What I…read moremean by that is-- The Green House does not reside in the ped mall. In fact it is lives in the shadow of the Chauncey Swan parking ramp and you easily could drive right past it. This labor of love boasts a rad patio, super cool space decked out in oh so many plants with lots of seating options and fabulous cocktails. You don't feel like you're in Iowa City anymore, Toto. It's an oasis! Additionally, the waitstaff is insanely friendly, knowledgeable and gracious. It's open on the daily and has happy hour each day! Huzzah! Happy Hour on weekends (2-5pm) and the weekdays (3-6pm) is $2 off all cocktails, wine, beer and kombucha. The menu has something for everyone-- literally. There are over a dozen beer options, a few hard cider options, handful of signature cocktails, handful of non-alcoholic options, shrubs, bushes (a take on a moscow mule with bush light instead of vodka), all the wines (red/white/rosé/bubbly) and seasonal cocktails. We popped in on a date night on Friday evening. My partner was freezing and got a Hot Toddy. It was wonderful-- you could taste the booze but it wasn't overpowering. I like that it came with fresh lemon slices and herbs to add as desired. I enjoyed the cider-centric seasonal cocktail, The Hemlock. Sublime. I was loving the word play on the menu with bushes and shrubs so we opted to try the Watermelon Habanero Shrub. It was a treat. They don't serve food really (pretzels and macarons are available) but you can bring in your own food, or have it delivered. The Green House will now and forever be my happy hour destination. It fills the void that was left when Clinton Street Social Club left the IC downtown scene-- it's that good. The ambiance, the chill atmosphere, reasonable pricing and the people. You really can't beat it.

Vibes are truly the best at The Green House. It's so cute with all the plants around. Been a few…read moretimes but got the Chai Espresso Martini⁣ last time. It's definitely preference but The Green House has my favorite espresso martini! Strong in both coffee and alcohol so it's a sipper! Less chocolate and more chai and coffee. I've also loved their shrub beverages and perfect to get some snacks from there or across the street at New Pioneer Coop. Bartenders are always nice and helpful. Quicker usually to go to bar to order

This is the coolest bar I've ever been to in Iowa, if not one of the coolest bars I've ever been…read moreto- PERIOD! The Sanity Room takes "theme" bar to a whole new level. There is a state mental facility outside of Independence, Iowa, and hence the theme of the Sanity Room. But don't think it's cold and creepy. No. The owners have gone to great lengths to make this an inviting place complete with the unique chairs, private small booths, and kitschy motto signs surrounding the place (one of my faves: "I can only please one person per day. Today I choose me."). They serve shots in pill bottles and syringes, and the staff will even make you don a patient gown, sit in the old hospital bed (vintage and they claim it came from the state hospital), and then administer the shots while wearing a doctor's coat. Genius! After you are vaccinated, you get a sticker. As if the booze wasn't awesome enough! And let's talk about the booze. This is a full bar that also features some great craft and local beers, as well as a local wine. Iowa wine, you ask? It was by far the best I sampled and I bought a bottle. Yeah, you can buy their stock too, if they have enough. As for specialty cocktails? Look no further than the bloody mary made with Chardonnay. That's right, I said the bloody mary is made with wine. And it's delicious. Since wine doesn't have as much alcohol as vodka, you might have to drink a lot to get the same effect, but with a taste like this you won't mind. The Sanity Room does seem to be a work in progress as they only have one unisex bathroom but they are working on more accommodations. Still, it's small so you can't imagine there would ever be a long line. It also sits in the back of an antique store, so blink and you might miss it. I know we did the first time we walked by, but the second time we took a chance and walked in and I am so glad we did! There's even a back patio area that overlooks the Wapsipinican River. The only bad thing would be that there are no TVs in the Sanity Room. I question if this would change the integrity of the bar, as it might compromise the theme and inviting nature. But I am a sports nut and there would be nothing better than belly up at the bar, drinking a glass of La T Da & watching the game! Seriously, if you're ever in Independence and you don't stop in here, you're missing out. I can't wait to get back and get my dose of Sanity!

A deck in the back gives a nice view of the Wapsie River, and an antique shop with all sorts of fun things, from tools to quilts. Thanks for the hospitality!

Rabbitt's Tavern - Nice little place in Grinnell! Dive it up...

I'm really perplexed by the local reputation of Rabbit's Tavern among some people…read more I was visiting Grinnell from Philadelphia for 48 hours, because my band was playing at the college. As I interacted with different locals on Thursday after my arrival, asking for local recommendations of bars and restaurants, some people actively advised me not to go to Rabbit's Tavern. This made me want to go see what all the fuss was about. I showed up at Rabbit's Tavern on Thursday late afternoon. It happened to be $1 draft pints of Bud and PBR. Hung out for a while and had a great experience, so much so what I went in for a nightcap after dinner. And then I returned twice on Friday. So that's 4 visits in two days. I met lots of really nice people. Drinks were cheap. The bathrooms were clean. The jukebox played a good mix of music, i.e. genres were not filtered out as they are at many bars, so I heard everything from heavy metal to country to rap. Service was solid. One of my friends who was traveling with me agrees with the five star rating. On Friday night, a group of us from Philly were supposed to go out with a group from Grinnell, and we said let's meet at Rabbit's Tavern. I was the first one there. As I sat there chatting with friendly locals, I got a text saying that the locals in our "party" wouldn't go to Rabbit's Tavern, so everybody was going to Solera instead. Except they showed up at Solera and it was closed. So everybody went to the generic bar at the hotel, which is the same as every other hotel bar in the world. I don't get it. Anyway, I had an awesome time at Rabbit's Tavern and would definitely come back if ever I find myself in Grinnell again.

He yelled at some man and he ended up leaving after like 2 drinks. It was the worst experience of being in a bar ever!!! I do not recommend going to Rabbits when Chace (or what ever his name is ) is working ! There were so many other people he was at as well. He was doing more shots than actually waiting on customers. I know I asked twi for a drink and he pr to help 2 other people then went to the bathroom and then asked if I wanted another drink! THIS was the WORST treatment I have ever experienced as a customer EVER!!!
