Oh my yuuuummm! We had a wonderful time here, from a last minute Friday night table being available (thank you table gods!) to cocktails, appetizers and a surprisingly DELICIOUS octopus dish! Since I was here last years ago the inside has been renovated and updated bringing about an elevated overall experience. The bar was bumpin (and big for seating & accessibility) and looked fun, people were waiting to get in the door and it feels like we got in just in time (book a table ahead of time to make sure you can eat here!). The bartender, servers, bus crew and owner were all super nice too. The menu does not disappoint! Do try the octopus! I have a sensitive pallet for flavor and texture and every time I've tried octopus before here has been not good, but here was amazing! My first bite had me thinking the texture was more like chicken (take that as "tastily cooked" for octopus!) and the flavoring then and every bite thereafter was amazing. Honu had been a favorite of ours for many years and we always look forward to returning. It's a special place and the ambiance and location can't be beat. Tonight we ordered our usual dishes, ahi bruschetta and the kale salad. However, something was just not right on either dish. The ahi bruschetta was lacking the usual flavors - it seemed to be missing the edamame puree - and we even had to ask for a little more of the aged balsamic glaze to try and improve it, but that didn't help. The kale salad, which has always been delicious, was missing the zing from the preserved lemon vinaigrette dressing. A big disappointment tonight. read more

We live in Kihei and have friends who rave about Honu, so we made a lunch reservation on a day we would be up that way. Atmosphere: Honu is right on the water. With an early lunch reservation we were seated at one of the first tables at the water's edge. There is an awning over the lanai, so it isn't too hot. You can't beat the view. Service: A bit slow given that there were only a few occupied tables, but everyone was very friendly. Food: Good, but not different from or better than elsewhere. I had the grilled fish sandwich and my husband had the fish and chips. The fish was fresh and well prepared. Overall, I would go back to Honu, but the food was not so unique that I would make a special trip. It is a great view and pleasant meal if you are in the area. read more

We came here twice during our week stay on Maui. This place has such a beautiful view, service was great, and the food was easily our favorite the whole time we were there. After a really disappointing experience at an (overly) high rated golf club, we had a really nice experience here. Our seating was 12' from the water, the ambience is a classy white and black, but casual enough to feel good in nice shorts. For the appetizer we had the burrata and it was the best we've had since visiting Italy 8 years ago. The crisply toasted but very thin bread was a perfect accompaniment with some sliced almonds and raisins. My wife had dungeoness crab salad that was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of horse radish to complement but not over power the dish, and the crab medallions were perfectly formed and arranged. I had a special of a local fish on corn risotto with a beurre blanc and roasted sesame seeds that was perfectly balanced to taste each ingredient. We topped it off with the banana cream pie with toasted coconut that let the fruits bring their own sweetness to the dish without a bunch of sugar. The service was excellent, including the bus people who were very attentive in clearing the table and keeping waters filled without being in the way or obtrusive. Of the 6 places we ate, this is absolutely the best and most memorable. It's a bit pricey but was the one place I can say was worth every penny. read more

What's so good about their french fries? Beef tallow, more expensive than vegetable oil but so much tastier, not to mention a healthier oil. I usually pass on them but not here. They don't cut corners on quality. Whether true or not, the server made me feel like family, she was perky, prompt, and ever present. This place was AMAZING! We went after sunset so we missed the wonderful sunset views everyone raves about. BUT the service and food itself was totally worth it. When on vacation, I don't normally think of getting clam chowder if I'm generally not in the NE area, but you HAVE to give it a try. SO GOOD. And the raw oysters were super fresh too! And the caprese appetizer had really fresh mozzarella to die for and this crispy baguette that had tiny cranberries in them. You would never imagine such a simple dish could be so satisfying. We also ordered two pies. We had the truffle and mushroom one I loved the most. The other pepperoni was ok. Still very good but not worth going to HA to have. Overall, the food was a little pricey. My bride and came to Maui to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We also came on our honeymoon, and many times in between. We agreed that this was the best meal we've had on Maul in those 50 years. The front of house manager, Donna, had arranged a table for 2 right on the water. And the universe came through with a killer sunset! Our server, Mari, was a great combination of fun and knowledge. We started a couple of glasses of French Sancerre. Followed by sharing an order of fried Washington oysters, with a great panko-based coating. Next we split a small Caesar salad, that had cilantro in it, very interesting and good. We added another half glass each of the Sancerre. I had the Fresh Fish Dore Style. The fish was Sickle Pomfret (Monchong) a local Maui fish. OMG good with a little grilled lemon juice and veggies. My bride had a great Fish and Chips. For dessert we had Coconut Cream Pie with, you guess it, FRESH local Coconut. Ahhhhh... Thank you Donna. Thank you Mari (and Mari's boss). First off, we were seated near the bar and it was pretty loud. There was a game on the TV and folks were getting excited and probably a bit tipsy. I thought the restaurant lacked identity... is it a sports bar or a fine dining establishment? Don't think it can be both. Besides the noise, the food was a bit disappointing especially for the price. What we ordered: + Kale salad with dates, pomegranates and walnuts in a lemony dressing. I have to say this was very good. + Italian sausage and pepperoni pizza - this was disappointing. First off the crust was thin and hard. Thin is fine, but it needs to be crisp and airy inside; this wasn't. The pepperoni was different - not sure what type they use, but it lacked the fattiness of pepperoni I'm use to. Finally the fresh mozzarella was not creamy as I would expect. It was a bit lumpy like cottage cheese. I did not enjoy this at all. read more

It was a major bday for me, and we spent hours deciding what restaraunt to pick for this occasion. Honu.... did not disappoint . We were fortunate enough to get a seaside patio table, where gentle waves provide an ambiance that is unmatched. Our server, Kayla, was just AWESOME.
