Kiddos not allowed in the cave area but can view parents in their previos natural relaxed habitat getting a drink. Kids can jump up and down awaiting their parents return. The second Grotto Bar on the island resides at the Grand Wailea Resort's pool. Why the similar name? The Grand Wailea Resort originally opened up as Grand Hyatt Wailea, and it's pool features, while way more extensive and fun than the original concept, was modeled after the bygone Hyatt Regency Maui in Lahaina. ATMOSPHERE: This is a true swim-up bar. In fact, it's the only way to access it. The bar is tucked into a man made cave, half in the sunlight, half in the shade. Bar "stools" are anchored to the pool's floor at the main bar, along with a few "booths" that are a bit musty-smelling as they take refuge in alcoves within the grotto, totally shaded from the sun. Either way, it's a fun attraction. MENU: Mixed drinks, wine, beer. Salads, bar-style apps, sandwiches, pokē, kid's menu. All super pricey. BEVERAGE: Lava Flow - $17.00 I love lava flows but at $17 a pop, it's price-gouging at its best. Creamy, coco-nutty, sweet and refreshing. One wasn't enough for my stomach but sure was for my wallet! It should come in a much bigger cup for that price. SERVICE: There aren't any servers wading around in the pool so it's all swim-up! Bartenders were friendly with quick service. Odd venue to review, as it's a guest-only, swim up bar in the Grand Wailea Resort, thus probably not meant to be reviewed, as opposed to the restaurants, which are open to the public. The swim-up bar is part of the all-ages pool (a chain of pools and a couple lazy rivers, one fun slide, and a few small slides, etc.) Thus getting to it is a challenge, and everything around is is crowded and loud. The bartender was nice and working efficiently, the drinks were pretty decent, but the prices were convenience inflated. You'll be out about $35+ after two mixed drinks. They should ideally have one of these in the overly shallow 18+only pool also. The crowd is mostly all middle-aged adults and their kids. You won't be doing much relaxing or partying here. And good luck finding a chair anywhere remotely convenient unless you get there super early and squat on it all day. read more

Dropped the car with the valet to meet some friends from home that we're staying there - we were told that with an expenditure we could get out free - I quickly said "swim up bar!" And the valet chuckled... Met with our friends in the lobby and grabbed some lounge chairs, sun screened, and jumped into the lazy river - which brought us close to this AWESOME bar! Sam right up and ordered maitais for all! Multiple rounds were had, and seating rotated enough that we were able to get one of the two private tables to converse. The drinks were stiff and the water warmer ...hmmm... we had a great time but when it got busier, we had to leave because I couldn't understand anyone over the sun and echo. A few rounds, and a few more trips around the lazy river, we got kicked out by security - no one at the valet said we couldn't swim! Ha! Oh well, we finished our day on the public beach, which is better than any pool, and watched the sun set. Happy days! Great bar! Lose the attitude! Let's just say $$$$ was spent, Grand Wailea didn't lose out, and we had a great time at the Best Bar in Maui! read more

Grotto bar was my and it seemed everyone else's favorite at the resort. There's several tv's, booze, and water seating... what's not to love? Personally, I really liked their blended drink menu selection much more than any other bar on the resort. I pretty much stuck to their mango mojito (dairy free and blended - a hard combo to find at Wailea) for the rest of the trip. Though when I discovered the other bars would make the drink I didn't head to the Grotto after as much ;D Also, just a tip, but their food selection is exactly the same as Volcano bar - so if you simply want the food, you can just go around the corner for the same fare. It's a pretty cool concept, though honestly the biggest issues I saw were that they should really double staff the Grotto (and maybe they do during the heavy season) and even though there's signage of 21+ only people still bring their children in the bar. Seriously. People do not want to watch TV and have their drink with your mini me's jumping off the tables and rocks (also not allowed) and splashing everyone. Which happened at least 3 times while I was there. The bartender finally spoke up after I visibly cringed after having my face splashed - but none of the other times was it enforced. Especially since the Grotto is right after and right before a water slide. I really loved the drinks at this bar and it was possibly the only space I enjoyed a blended drink from the menu at, but after finding they would make the drink elsewhere the novelty wore off a bit... still pretty fun while it lasted though! read more

The view here is amazing. This entire resort is top notch and the bar will not disappoint. I came here while my wife was at the beauty spa and tried a mai tai. It was one of the better ones on the island. The rum was top shelf and the juice was fresh. I also tried some flat bread with kalua pork and pineapple. It was so damn good It is a great place to grab a great drink and enjoy some people watching. However it is rather expensive. read more

Dude, it's a bar in a pool under a waterfall. Pretty snazzy. But plan to pay $14 for drinks, if not more. They're interesting drinks, though, including blended cocktails. It's fun, but crowded, with kind of loud music. It's a little chlorinated. You have to wade your butt over. But come on, it's a tiny bar. In a pool! Under a waterfall! This is Kodak moment stuff. Bring a waterproof camera. Order a drink. Relax under the sun. My only regret is that we bought the plastic $22 pineapple mug (bigger refills) thinking we would go back on our last day, but it rained, so it was kind of a wash. I have been waiting to come to this Grotto bar for over a year! Long overdue, and definitely did not live up anticipations. First off, obviously, the drinks are way higher priced than what they should be. I knew that swimming in. I chose the pineapple mug, because when you are celebrating, money ain't a thang! $22 bucks vs $15 bucks. When you are paying $15 a cocktail, what's the difference. Cocktails were all really sweet, but got the job done. What wasn't kosher, was the fact that people were eating, right there in the water. French fries, crumbs, and hot dog pieces were getting dropped in the water by the tipsy ones posted up on the stools. The water doesn't circulate well were the front of the bar is, and the water was noticeably hotter than a couple feet away. Either people were heating up the area with the world famous 'Peeter Heater' or they have a heater there. Either way, the feeling was unsettling, so we grabbed our booze and floated outta there. read more

Every moment he kept saying, "Let's go to the Grotto Bar!" like a kid about to go to a candy store. I jokingly asked him if he was a nba star and he said "Yes, and you're my playboy bunny." No need to worry, folks. Just friendly banter, we were beyond tame at the Grotto Bar :) The nicest swim-up bar I've ever experienced. The bar is in a cave with waterfalls. A few crevices where you can sit down on enjoy that premium drink. I brought my pineapple container that I bought early in the week for $22 to get $15 refills (at double the volume). There's also access to a jacuzzi. There's a bridge walkway behind the grotto so you don't have to pass through the waterfall pouring over your head. But the jacuzzi was always filled with children... So your best bet for a jacuzzi is the Hibicus Adult-only pool. Again, I wouldn't come to Grand Wailea for the Grotto Bar itself but may as well make a pit stop if you paid for the Grand Wailea experience. read more

Well, first, let me say we didn't really stay at the Grand Wailea but we really really wanted to visit the Grotto Bar. With that said, I don't know if we were allowed in, but the bartender was friendly and never questioned it. The GW might want to clarify if non GW stayers could go in. To get there, we had to trek through the resort grounds and dip into their smaller pools. Once there, swim up into the grotto and you'll see a bar with maybe about 6 seats at the bar, and 2 smaller cozy corners. This place is awesome. It's cool, has a lil breeze, and has waterfalls in the corners providing a grotto experience. The bartender is friendly and they take cash! read more

I have made it to one or two swim up bars in my life, this one definitely hits the top of the list. It is located in a cave inside the amazing pools at the GW (I reviewed the hotel separately). There is a swim up bar with some bar stools as well as a few additional tables inside the water around the cave. The bartender was super fun and friendly. He sold us on the Pineapple, it is a plastic Pineapple that can later be used as a coin container (or take up space in your suitcase then later sit in your closet?). You pay a few bucks extra for it the first time but as long as you keep it with you get a larger drink each time you use it. It is almost like paying for one drink and getting a double. So if you are going to have a few drinks it's a good way to go. You can order food here as well and we didn't do this but it looked like your typical pool food, burgers, nachos etc. read more

I'm a Hilton Honors member and my wife and I have been going to the Grand Wailea several times a year for many years and it has always been a favorite. Points or cash, the treatment has always been good since Hilton has taken over the management of the property. . . BUT, The recent installation of a TV set in the Swim Up Bar is not only Cheesy, but has attracted a loud , drunken, unruly bunch viewing sporting events. I was accosted by this drunken guy just because of where I live. Wanted to get into it. Really felt I was in danger. Bartender kept on pouring them though they were clearly Blasted. Many kids playing in the pool nearby. Bartender should have cut them off. Period. No Aloha going on here. If Hilton and the Waldorf Astoria want a sports-bar at the Grand Wailea, set it up in the old empty night club. That way the bartender at the grotto bar doesn't have to be a security guard and the pool will be a fun and safe place to come to again. Get rid of the TV Set (REALLY??!!- Come to Hawaii to watch TV?- could have stayed home -it would have been A Lot cheaper.) I'll be spending my annual 3 grand at the 4 Seasons next door from now on. Very cool little hidden secret! It took me a few days to find this. Great place to grab a drink and watch the game without having to get out of the pool. Then up the stairs from the bar is a hot tub with a great view of the ocean. I recommend buying the souvenir cups because its like the best adult drinking cup in the pool! read more

A fun little cave bar in a pool under a water fall. (I didn't see all that many patrons leaving their perch to head to the restrooms for a pee break. I've vacationed at several resorts in the Hawaiian Islands by far the funnest bar is the the swim up Groto Bar at Grand Wailea. Located in a cave with a backside waterfall the Groto Bar is the party hot spot located in the GW resort.. If you don't loud music, loud fun people and and TV's than avoid this bar. When ordering your first drink make sure to purchase it in the GW plastic pineapple.
