Oysters and crab

Made a reservation for sunset and this spot did not disappoint. Surrounded by chirping colorful birds, with a beautiful view of the ocean and sunset. Golden hour really fills the space. The drinks were excellent the food was excellent. Once the sun sets, the birds leave, but the vibes don't. This was such a great spot for an early birthday celebration. The hotel itself is also beautiful, so it's worth walking around and seeing the space.

This is a social media trap. They have bird feed lining the interior edge of the ceiling so the birds are going crazy and are really loud. The view is minuscule and narrow due to the low ceiling. I thought it would be a cute place to watch the sunset, but the view was pretty terrible. The cocktails were unbalanced, and took over 20 minutes as there was only 1 bartender. Our 2 hand rolls took another 20 minutes. The menu was pretty overpriced.

What an amazing place for a date night! Love the atmosphere and the natural beauty of the sunset and birds just chirping away! Service was incredible, forgot her name, but she was so kind and hospitality! Food was also fantastic! Their garden salad looks like it needed more dressing but once we tasted it, it was perfectly seasoned and the dressing was so light but flavorful. Hubs got the Wagyu which was delicious but 4 oz of meat is not a lot haha I got the yellowtail collar and it was delicious! Cooked perfectly! Me got a side of white rice, perfectly cooked and it was perfect when we made fried rice with it the next day. Definitely a MUST go!! One of our top 10 places!

Last bit of sunset

We made a last-minute reservation for two at The Birdcage, just in time for a 7:45 PM seating--and somehow landed one of the most unforgettable evenings of our trip. Set high above Wailea at Hotel Wailea, The Birdcage feels like a breezy hideaway perched in the clouds. We were seated near the front of the open-air dining room, where every chair is angled to face the real star of the show: the sunset. And what a show it was. As we settled in, the sky began its slow descent into color--fiery streaks of gold, orange, and pink melting into the ocean. Warm air drifted in, soft and fragrant, and nature's soundtrack took over--birds chirping and fluttering in the rafters, some nesting just above us in the exposed beams. It felt like the kind of atmosphere you can't really plan for--it just happens when the setting and timing align perfectly. We kept it simple and ordered a round of cocktails and a half dozen oysters to share. The oysters were fresh, briny, and topped with a delicate mignonette and seaweed oil that let the natural flavors shine. It was the kind of small plate that feels just right for a light sunset bite--elegant, unfussy, and perfectly coastal. The drinks were as fun as they were thoughtful. I had the Non-Migratory, bold and spirit-forward, and a Fly By Night, which had this rich, darker profile that really matches the mood. My partner tried a tequila-based version of the Early Bird, which was bright, citrusy, and refreshing--easily our favorite of the three. The bird-themed cocktail menu isn't just a gimmick--it's cleverly curated, and every drink felt intentional. What really elevated the night, though, was the energy of the space. Even though it was just the two of us, it felt like we were part of something communal. Everyone was facing the same direction, quietly watching the sun go down, drink in hand. It was peaceful but alive. Our server was wonderful--warm and present without hovering. We ended up chatting with her about life on the island, and she shared a bit of her story, which added such a personal, human note to the experience. That kind of moment--the unscripted connection--feels rare in a destination restaurant, and it was the perfect final touch. If you're looking for a place that captures the spirit of Maui without trying too hard, The Birdcage is it. Come for the cocktails, stay for the sunset, and let the birds overhead remind you to slow down and soak it all in.

Baked Hawaii

My wife wanted to end my birthday on a highnote so she booked a reservation for The Birdcage for a late ish dinner (late for Maui). This place is located in the Hotel Wailea. The Birdcage was a rotunda with outdoor views mostly all around. We couldn't really see any views though since it was so dark. The place itself wasn't really packed so it felt even more intimate. Our server was super friendly and helpful picking out stuff to eat and drink. All the drinks we ordered were some of the best ones we've had in all of Maui. We also ordered a Dry Aged Burger w/Curly Fries, handrolls, and oysters. Everything was prepared very well. It was probably the fanciest burger I've had in Hawaii (I guess price matches how fancy it was). Oysters tasted fresh as well as the handrolls (ora king salmon). Our server was also so nice to give us a Baked Hawaii for dessert on the house for my birthday as well. You don't see places like the Birdcage too often in Maui but it definitely stood out. Very great cocktails, nice food, personable service, and (probably) great views too.

This is my favorite bar in the world. I tell everyone! This is our third time visiting and it gets better every time. I would recommend to get a reservation at 5pm right when they open so you can get a great seat (with views of the whales when in season). The birds are lively all the way until sunset which is incredible to hear and watch. Zoe was fantastic and recommended the best food items on the menu. We got the garden salad, mushrooms, and hamachi kama. Every item was surprisingly amazing and generous proportions so we couldn't eat everything! The mushrooms were tasty with so many flavors going on with the sauce and egg and the kama was delicious with a great char and sauce. We will continue to come back every time we visit Maui!!

Top 3 Wailea Resort Bars! WOW. Blown away. Came for a pre-dinner drink on my birthday and was so happy with the choice!!! The venue is breathtaking. It actually resembles a bird cage with birds inside and has a gorgeous sunset view. I got the Love potion drink and it comes with a potion IN A MINI BIRD NEST (adorable) that you get to pour into the drink. It was the best cocktail i've had in a while! My friend got the mango ginger vodka drink and that was also incredible!!! Our server Michaela was fabulous. The entire staff hand signed a birthday card for me also?!? Overall, easy 5/5.

Worth every penny. A special place that gives you some life long memories. Why eat at the birdcage? Do it for the birds. You'll never forget it. 5pm reservation is the way to go. Get the filet mignon. Incredible sunset. Wild to read reviews complaining about the quality of sunset view. Shoutout to the service. See you all again!

Amazing sunset from The Birdcage

Come for the view... stay for the cocktails. Or is that the other way around? hahaha Either way... it's Fantastic. Fun cocktails and drinks. Good selection of wines and beers. They have food if you are inclined for some nibbles. We didn't since we had a rez at The Restaurant next door. But DEFINITELY come here to enjoy the evening views. OH... and the lovebirds chirp all day long from morning to night. For some reason they only stay here and not other parts of the property. I can't blame them; it's a great location.

A birthday celebration brought us to The Birdcage, the lobby bar of Hotel Wailea, for some pre-dinner drinks. ATMOSPHERE: Located just off the lobby, the open-air bar is dimly lit with very high ceilings, oversized chairs and lounges, and no less than 180-degrees of ocean views. Be sure to check out the tables with bird legs & claws. Also, be careful of bird poop on the chairs. We didn't see any flying around, but they left their marks and weren't cleaned off. MENU: Handful of salads, apps, seafood, meats & poultry. BEVERAGE: Bye Bye Birdie This vodka-based drink had a nicely balanced mix of slightly sweet, tart, spicy and herby. FOOD: Beef Tartare We were served this while dining at The Restaurant. This definitely landed in my top 10 apps of all time. The creamy and flavorful beef went oh so well with the chicharron! Highly recommended. SERVICE: Gal server was friendly & professional. The drinks took a while to come out. TIP: No children are allowed at Hotel Wailea. OVERALL: Excellent venue for sunsets.

Adorable little love birds and other wild birds fly in and out of the space .the service was attentive. The food wasn't great , I expects better flavours for the price we paid which was very very expensive. We had ordered the food so at least one of my starters was to come before . My spouse hamburger came out first .I ordered three small plates ( stone crab claw's , tomato salad and yakatori shrimp which didn't show up for 15 min . The server keep apologizing. The kitchen is having. Expediting issues and the head chef needs to sort it out .. We ordered a chocolate mousse to go $25 for example.wasn't worth it. Strange they don't sell wine by the bottle? The bird part was fun .wouldn't return

If I could give this place 10 stars I would! The service was so amazing and FAST. We stopped in during sunset for a few drinks and the ambience is top tier. Our serves name was Emily and she was the best! Super friendly and gave great recommendations not only from the menu but things to do and definitely made our trip.

Beef Tare Tare with Chicharron
Nazeerah P.

We can't emphasize enough how impressed we were with the plating and flavor profiles of the dishes at The Birdcage. Staying at Hotel Wailea, we didn't know what to expect, but the name truly reflects the experience. Tropical grandeur awaits in this beautiful, open-air lounge known for its exquisite selection of Japanese grill specialties and freshly prepared sushi. As you relax, you'll hear calming bird sounds from real birds, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for a quiet evening. We started with Old Fashioneds made with a nice mid-shelf whiskey, then topped it off with local beers--fantastic choices! The glasses were perfectly chilled, and the staff was amazing. The dim lighting made it an ideal date night spot. We opted for a three-course meal and shared our dishes. The beef tartare was phenomenal--perfectly prepared with light, fluffy scratch-made chicharron chips that had just the right amount of flavor. The fish plate was incredibly flaky and paired wonderfully with its accompanying sauce. We also loved the sautéed shiitake mushrooms and shishito peppers; they were absolutely delicious. Everything was presented beautifully, and we didn't take many photos because we were too busy enjoying our meal. The timing of the service was spot on, making us feel like we were the only ones in the room. We can't wait to return to Hawaii and visit The Birdcage again. The presentation and quality of food were the best we've seen on the island!

Never thought I'd mention this but prices are reasonable considering its pricy exclusive Wailea. And it's nice to enjoy dining during a cool Dec. sunset evening, but the sun goes down by 5:30 pm, so go a little earlier and use the valet parking.

6.22.26 UPDATE We…read moreoriginally had a disappointing experience due to slow service, limited attention from staff, and the lack of air conditioning during our visit. However, the owner took the time to respond and explain that the entire shopping center wing was experiencing cooling issues and that the restaurant was dealing with significant staffing shortages at the time. While that doesn't completely change the experience we had, I appreciate that the owner acknowledged the challenges and responded professionally rather than dismissing the feedback. One observation I would offer is that, as a customer, it was difficult to tell who was serving tables. I noticed several employees in Pint & Cork shirts moving around the restaurant, but only saw a couple of servers actively covering the dining area. It's possible some staff were assigned to bartending or other responsibilities, but from the guest perspective it gave the impression that table service was understaffed while other employees appeared unavailable. I still think there is room for improvement in the flow and logistics on the floor, but I appreciate the owner's willingness to engage with feedback and explain the circumstances. That being said, I would be willing to give the restaurant another chance. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATED REVIEW AFTER OWNER'S RESPONSE: 6.21.26 I appreciate the response. It's telling that you addressed the air conditioning, disputed the gender of an employee, and questioned whether I was even there, yet didn't meaningfully respond to the concerns about service, timing, attentiveness, or food quality. If a customer leaves with a poor experience, the question isn't whether they perfectly recalled every detail. The question is why they left with that impression in the first place. I suspect future readers can draw their own conclusions from both the review and the response. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Probably the most disappointing dining experience of our Hawaii trip. We specifically asked to sit indoors because we wanted a break from the Maui heat after spending the day outside. Unfortunately, we quickly realized there was no air conditioning, making the indoor seating barely any cooler than outside. The restaurant also felt severely understaffed. It took around 10 minutes just to get a Diet Coke, and every time I asked for assistance, the woman working at the register seemed to defer the request rather than help or find someone who could. Meanwhile, some employees appeared more interested in chatting than helping customers, while only one or two staff members seemed to be working the floor. I understand restaurants get busy, especially in a tourist area, but the issue wasn't just the wait--it was the feeling that customer service wasn't a priority. As for the food, it was nothing special. I ordered a steak that had a nice smoky flavor, but it arrived well done and overcooked. The rest of the meal was average at best and definitely not memorable enough to make up for the service issues. Between the lack of air conditioning, slow service, inattentive staff, and mediocre food, this was one of the few places in Hawaii where I genuinely regretted spending my money. Considering the location at The Shops at Wailea and the prices being charged, I expected a much higher level of hospitality and execution. There are far too many great dining options in Wailea to come back here.

It was only after a staff member (possibly a barback) approached us to ask if we had been helped that anyone finally acknowledged our presence. The lack of basic service was frustrating, but what made the experience more uncomfortable was the feeling that we were being deliberately overlooked. It's hard not to question whether assumptions were being made about us, whether it was how we looked or something else entirely. No guest should ever feel that way when walking into a business. The bar back took our order, and that's when one of the bartenders finally acknowledged us but didn't even apologize for not assisting us to begin with. For a place that presents itself as upscale, the level of professionalism and hospitality fell far below expectations. I hope management takes this seriously and works on creating a more inclusive and attentive environment for all guests.
