Kahale's is a true dive--with just enough island flavor to remind you you're still in Maui. We made an early evening stop for some local drinks and a bit of people-watching. It's got that unmistakable dive bar energy: dark, unpolished, and full of personality, with a few Hawaiian touches sprinkled in to give it its own Maui vibe. The crowd was entirely colorful regulars and their pets including the dog of one of the bartenders. We even met folks later into the evening who knew the bartenders--and got some confirmation on their uniqueness. The biggest downside? Cowboys memorabilia on the walls. Vomit. Truly unfortunate. But despite that I can't resist a dive with real character. I wish we could have made it for a night out to get the full local dive experience!!! Go Steelers. -1 for Cowboys. But Kahale's? We looked up 'sports bar tv' here and Kahale's came up right quick for a South Maui location. We walked in and immediately asked if the LAD-PHI NLDS game 2 could be put on, I remembered it was on TBS. After that order of business, we settled down for a Mango Cart and Kohala pilsener. The decibel level went up a bit because there was also a Chiefs game on as well. We enjoyed the friendly afternoon crowd and the service was prompt and friendly. We'll come back here for the vibe and location to Paia Fish Market and beachs in the south. Dog friendly, too! read more

Came here for trivia night which was fun but they definitely over charged me and my family on our drinks and when I nicely brought it up saying I didn't order that many drinks she told me no I did and was kind of rude. This was a fun late night place to stop for a drink. There weren't many people which made it nice to sit and talk. They only had high top bar stools as far as we could see but they were pretty comfortable. The staff was super friendly towards us. The music was at a great level- not too loud. There is loads of parking in the lot right outside the bar. It is also in a place where there are several restaurants so you can go get dinner and then come here for drinks. read more

The first bartender was hanging around (presumably off shift) and gave me my second round. When I attempted to pay second bartender for second round with a tip, I was ignored. I threw my money on the bar and left. Overall: This is a Cheers bar. If you know people, you will get treated well. If nobody knows who you are, plan for a wait in service. It's a dive bar. We hired a photographer to take photos at the beach for our wedding anniversary and had wanted to have some casual photos at the food stands nearby afterwards. Since the food stands were closed at 5pm after the beach photoshoot, still looking for a food/drink establishment with some character we searched for "dive bars" in the Kihei area, and were lucky that Kahale's came up. I walked in wearing a seersucker suit and my wife in a frilly sun dress and big floppy hat, and needless to say we didn't blend right in, but the regulars there were VERY friendly and had a blast that we'd chosen their watering hole. Great conversation, lots of smiles, and terrific service from the bartender. What a great place, proudly holding itself out as a dive bar. Modestly priced cocktails, too. GO HERE. read more

Cool dive bar that we stopped in for a drink. We came kind of late, and the place was kind of empty, but everyone was friendly and we were served quickly. We looked at some golf video game that they had, and the bartender offered to turn it on for us, but we declined. Overall a chill spot to have a drink. This bar is not a friendly unless your a Hawaiian. We left with two people who had bloodied legs from the bouncer throwing them to the ground for accidentally using the wrong door, which we totally misunderstood as he said don't leave the door open to someone else, so we thought you could exit as long as you left the door closed. Then one of the lady's tried to stop the bouncer from assaulting our group and she ended up with a black eye from the bouncers elbow. He then proceeded to tell our group to go back the main land. None of us are fighters, obnoxious drunks, just having a couple of drinks with friends in Maui trying to relax. Mind you, we have never ever experienced anything like this, we're all pretty mellow people. I don't recommend this bar to anyone as the atmosphere here is violent and the bouncer is looking for a fight. The bouncer also kept saying he had a broken hand, so not sure why he is assaulting customers with a broken hand and why he is so angry! The owner may hear from our attorney for assaulting 3 people. read more

Great place to hit up. Low key, friendly and they typically have live music going on. One night we stopped into the triangle and the music was more hard rock/metal, so we passed it up, but the night we decided to go in a blues group was there. It was a good time. People were dancing and having a great time. I ordered myself a Mai Thai and that was beautifully strong! Hats off to the server. If you're looking for low-key, no frills good time, head into this spot! They also have this really cool fryer that can cook up some good food on the fly. We ordered some wings and they were delicious. Neighbors ordered wings and fries and it looked just as good. read more

A friend brought us here on one of our spontaneous bar hopping nights out. ATMOSPHERE: They're located at the north end of the "triangle" that is Kihei Kalama Village. It feels like you're on an enclosed house porch. The tiny, open air space is crammed with a few tables, bar, and a small stage. Smokers will find it friendly with 2 easy access doors out. FOOD: Nothing except popcorn. BEVERAGE: Beer prices were cheaper than normal - under $4 for domestic bottles. ENTERTAINMENT: They have a live band scheduled every night of the week. SERVICE: The female server was friendly and service was quick. OVERALL: Cool place to come for cheap beer, live music, and no cover charge. read more

Everyone on the island was so cool but once you stepped into kahale's you really could feel the ohana. My husband and I stopped in for a few beers before we had to fly out. We got to meet and hang out with the owners!. It was so cool to hear everyone's stories around how they got to Maui and how the community pulled together through the pandemic. Other patrons included a local artist and a kayak guide who were both more than happy to show us artwork and amazing pictures of whales. Met the owner and she's as nice and generous as the pours. Mostly locals... but if you're a tourist just pretend you live here like a Kamaāina (pronounced ka-ma-EYE-na). 20+ years in business says something about a place with so much competition. Two ways to understand what is a local dive bar: Write a few thousand words, or come here. Hidden in the back corner of this active nightlife area, the music draws you in. Friday night had a great guitarist, playing his own Maui-adaptations of some famous songs with great guitar skills and a fine smooth voice. We and one other couple looked like we didn't belong. The rest were clearly regulars, with hugs around when new ones arrived. The place is small, old, messy, and a room you'd probably not want to see in daylight. But the beer was cold, service was excellent, and everyone was relaxed. A highlight was the lady who talked to the guitar player, kicked off her shoes, and then danced a beautiful flowing hula in front of her boyfriend standing at the bar. I don't know if this was suppose to be the Hawaiian version of a lap dance, but it was great - warm, sincere, well-done, and sexy, by a woman who was definitely not a professional dancer, but did know her hula. She got plenty of applause. The lowlight was the most uncomfortable stools on which I have ever sat. I even tried setting, but it didn't help. read more
