Poke Tacos -- Ahi tuna, ginger, shoyu, cabbage, avocado cream sauce on crisp wonton shells
    Terry C.

For years, we've been coming to grab a bite at Monkeypod Kaanapali when we're up in the area. Although we've haven't been here for some time, the restaurant seems to have faltered a bit in food quality and food prep. Of course we understand that operation costs have increased, yet the prices were a bit steep for what one receives. Location, location, location. The Ahi Tuna Tacos had a very minimal amount of ahi on top of a large quantity of cabbage tucked into the small wonton shell. The ginger was missing and the shoyu wasn't noticeable at all. The Lobster Deviled Eggs were well prepared with plenty of creamy egg filling, but the very small sliver of lobster topping each of the four egg white halves addded zero flavor. The lobster meat was used more as a decoration than a main ingredient. The total flavor of the rich, velvety texture of the filing was excellent, but again, the slivers of lobster added zero flavor. Pete's Fish & Chips was quite delectable with the daily catch of today's offering using mahi-mahi fish. The tempura style coating was a bit flat in taste and crunch, but overall the fish and coating was not greasy and was enjoyable. The fries served with the fish were quite limp, but had a good flavor. The pizza oven, however, was out of operation waiting for a part. The service from Zachary was spot on. He was very friendly, and attentive during our meal, but was not intrusive. It was quite warm inside the restaurant, so we sat on the outer patio area, which still allowed us to enjoy the live music, which plays daily between 11am to 9pm. The restaurant is usually loud and quite busy.

You should eat here. Or at least get a Mai Tai. You might think that Monkeypod at Whalers Village is a bit touristy and a bit tacky -- it's part of a mall -- but you would be wrong (but also right). Whalers Village is touristy, sure, but there are solid shops, and there is Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman. Open-air, high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling views facing west. The sunsets are superb. Staff were conscientious and considerate -- present when you needed them, gone when you didn't. I saw couples, families, kids, singles. It's a place for everyone, and it feels like it. But honestly? The real draw might be the drink. Their signature Monkeypod Mai Tai (pictured) features a honey-lilikoi foam -- "lilikoi" being the Hawaiian name for passion fruit. The conventional wisdom is to sip the foam first to get the full flavor, then mix it into the rest of the drink. Doing this is ... *chef's kiss* delicious. Handcrafted cocktails run around $20, and they have 25+ beers on tap at $10-11 a pint. The coconut corn chowder is delicious in its own right, though it's begging for some seafood protein or bits of island-sourced pork belly to push it to entrée territory. The daily fish was locally caught mahi mahi -- a common fresh catch here, and worth asking about as it rotates. The ribeye is served with sautéed baby bok choy and jalapeño mashed potatoes. Fun fact: the jalapeño mashed potatoes are green from puréed spinach, and the jalapeño flavoring is herbaceous but not terribly spicy. Lots of flavor packed into every bite. Also a pleasant surprise was the Saimin entrée, with locally crafted noodles from Paia. Full of flavor, garnished with what I suspect (or hope) might be Virginia peanuts, it tasted like it had steeped and stewed all day for such full flavor. Entrées range from $23 (Maui Cattle Company Cheeseburger) to $74 (Prime Ribeye). Quite reasonable for Maui. The wine list is respectable, and I'd recommend the Napa Valley Peju ($88) for a full-bodied, ripe, generous companion to red meats and flavor-forward foods. It's a restaurant in a Maui mall. It truly has no business being this good. You should go.

I was going to give it a 4 today because our food didn't come for awhile but man, bartender Megan to the rescue!!!! Our fries didn't come and she personally went back and got our fries while simultaneously taking care of dozens of other clients. She recommended food to us and greeted us right when we arrived and never made us feel rushed even though she was helping a ton of other people. This place is also packed! and for good reason. The mai tai was really good and the banana cream pie was amazing! The beach vibe being right off the beach is also amazing! The wait when we got here was about 45 minutes but we got in after only 10. We really enjoyed ourselves here.

Monkeypod has been on our list every time we've gone to Maui, and we finally got to during this most recent trip. This location is located inside Whaler's Village, an outdoor mall in the Ka'anapali area. We made a reservation for 9 PM (it was the only time left) but we ended up getting to the mall a few hours early so we just wrote our name to the list and they texted us when our table was ready about an hour later. Everything we got was great. We had the deviled eggs and one of the salads for appetizer, the fish & chips, fish tacos, pesto gnocchi, and of course, the famous Monkeypod mai thais. These mai thais live up to the hype - that foam is SO good and this drink alone makes the trip worth it. Pricing is definitely on the higher side. Tip for parking: if you park in the mall parking garage, they will validate your ticket here - make sure you remember as the rates get pricey. Overall a pleasant experience and would come back again.

Had a 5 star experience here today! Our server was amazing and he was beyond kind and accommodating!!! First of all, the mai tais here are a must-try. The lilikoi foam is PHENOMENAL, I wish I could put it on everything. I got the seared ahi sandwich special and was beyond pleased. The kimchi slaw that came with this was SO GOOD. This was so close to the beach and had a wonderful view as well. Thanks!!!

Stopped in for a quick lunch while visiting Whaler's Village and was seated immediately, with prompt service throughout our meal. We ordered the truffle fries, mushroom pizza, mahi tacos, and ahi poke tacos. They also offered complimentary macaroni with cheese and red sauce for keiki under 3, which was a thoughtful touch. Unfortunately, the food was a hit or miss. The pizza crust was soggy, and the toppings slid off when you tried to pick up a slice. The mahi tacos came with a chipotle mole that made the dish spicy. The standout dish were the ahi tacos. Overall, beautiful views of Kaanapali, but the food was pretty average.

The Mai Tais are definitely special. The passion fruit foam is really delicious. Loved the variation and I understand why it's notable. The pizza with pineapple and pork was great flavor. The fish tacos needed some help. Not flavorful enough overall. I would recommend coming here for drinks and pizza and keeping it simple.

Stopped in for happy hour and it was amazing!! First of all if your with kids under 3 they get free pasta!! It kept the kids quiet! I got a Mai Tai and Ube Rey for drinks. We got chicken wings, truffle fries and coconut corn chowder. All were great! Appetizers were half off and drinks were $4 off! It was a great happy hour! The foam on the Mai Tai was great but my favorite drink was the Ube Rey because I love coconut.

We had been in Lahaina and on the second trip, decided to check out the happy hour. 3:30-5pm. Restaurant is by the beach , why not check it out? Got their famous mai tai. Super tasty, the lilikoi foam on top, tarty. One was enough. Also pizzas were half off, actually good deal - but we had just at least at the beach nearby. The server was nice, I believe Ken. Definitely worthwhile.

We had a wonderful dinner at Monkeypod Kitchen. Even with a 30-minute wait, we enjoyed walking around Whalers Village and appreciated the text when our table was ready. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and on top of everything. We were seated at a cozy table, and the sunset view made the evening even more special. The saimin hit the spot even on a hot day. Rich umami broth with fresh herbs and crunchy peanuts. The lamb spiced pizza was light and flavorful, and the chicken wings were satisfying without being too heavy. The dipping sauce was so good we used it on the pizza too. We were full, but couldn't say no to the mango sorbet the perfect sweet finish. ^^

Loved our experience here!!! Our server Mariel had great energy, was super knowledgeable about allergies/ gluten intolerance for our friend, and we felt so welcomed. My cattle company burger was so good. It doesn't come with fries so I upgraded to the garlic truffle fries for $5 and it was worth it. Nothing was left. I ate it so fast. My party had the chowder, flat bread, saimin, and pork tacos and no one had any complaints. My birthday was also the next day and I got a free pie on the house :) the banana cream was honestly not the best but it was free haha can't complain Will def be back whenever I'm back on Maui!

Our wait was just about 10 mins and we're sat as a party of six. server was quick and nice and suggested some drinks and appetizers since it was our first time. The fish sandwich & shrimp and lobster deviled eggs were good. the mai thai was great too!

Wow, people weren't kidding when they said Monkeypod Kitchen has the best Mai Tais in all of Hawaii! And quite possibly on a personal note, the world, if I might add. Exclusive to the Hawaiian islands, the restaurant has multiple locations across both Maui and Oahu and features farm-fresh, local ingredients within a regional island-inspired menu. Situated right along the beach, the ocean-view and open-air setting of its Whaler's Village location doesn't get any better than this. The restaurant gets busy but we were lucky to do a walk-in and only waited around ten minutes. We started with the Monkeypod Mai Tais, of course. What makes these cocktails stand out from the rest, aside from the perfect balance between its ingredients, is the light and airy honey-lilikoi foam topping. We also ordered the roasted chicken wings and the Bourgeois pizza which featured white sauce with fresh lobster, mother farm oyster mushroom. The wings were solid but basic; nothing really stood out about its simple seasoning of garlic, local rosemary, and red pepper. But the pizza was delicious, generously sized and its flavors complemented one another perfectly. Between the energetic, approachable vibes and great selection of food and cocktails at Monkeypod Kitchen, I'm already counting down the days until I can have another sip of their extraordinary Mai Tais again!

    Does the restaurant take reservations?

I don't think they take reservations.

Do they charge GET tax and a Kitchen tax on top of the total food prices? If so, how much do they charge?

They charged the usual Hawaii tax, as other restaurants do. And then there was an extra charge for "kitchen staff" added to the bill, which was unique to this restaurant. Plus we also tipped the server 20 percent, as usual. We just found that… Read more

Do they have gluten free options?

There are limited options but the fish tacos with GF are good. The staff is knowledgeable about GF options.

Is Happy Hour only served in the bar area? How early should I get there for HH?

Happy Hour is served in the restaurant also! Hard to say how early because it depends on how busy it is. Last May we were seated with 5 minutes left and I just ordered two Mai Tais for myself :-).

    Are you wheelchair accessible?

    Yes, easy for wheelchairs

How far in advance do you accept reservation for both locations on Maui?

They do not take reservations but I recommend putting in your name and walking around the shopping area during your waiting time and you won't even notice you waited!

This is the same family of restaurants. Head Chef runs both locations and is often in the Wailea location in the afternoon, then the Westside location in the evening or vice versa.

Happy hour here? What times and reviews?

3-5 pm. The mai tais were amazing. They have foam on top of LiLikoi (passion fruit) and they were the best Mai Tais I've ever had (only $10 each). We had a pizza for $10 too – (kalua pork, macnut pesto, roasted pineapple, jalapeño, green onion),… Read more

We didn't have reservations and upon arriving at the host stand, the female hostess was snobby and did not want to help us and instead, the male host sat us down at a communal table with ottermans for seats. We didn't feel like crouching down to eat so I went back to ask if we could sit at the bar. We moved to the bar and ordered from the bartender; I got the lobster roll and my husband ordered the poke nachos. We realized there was a musician playing and wanted to move closer to the music. So I decided to go back to the host stand and ask if we could get on the list for a table close to the musician. The female host proceeded to snob me WHILE she drinks from her hydroflask. The male host stated to me that since we ordered our food already, we are not allowed to sit on a table since those tables have servers too. He also had an attitude. I asked very nicely and felt that they thought I was interrupting their deep conversations. The male host reluctantly stated that the tables open up after 9:30pm. Management really needs to school these two on how to talk to guests with more respect. This was on 11/14/25, approx. 8pm. As local kama'aina, we expected more but those two failed miserably. After we finished eating our food, we closed out our tab and moved by the musician. Needless to say, we were nicely greeted by a waitress who asked if she can get us anything. This place could be so much more but our experience with the front of the house was enough for us to not return during our trip. On the flip side, the lobster roll was really good whereas the poke nachos was okay. There's so much more dining options within the Westin's vicinity with great service AND food, like Leilani's Beach Bar (at Leilani's on The Beach) so we would not recommend this place BUT if you want a good lobster roll, this is the place to have it.

Another 10 minutes later, he showed up again, apologized and said the restaurant's manager had said their order-entry system had gone down and that our order would be one of the first to go in w/the tech running again. Then another 25 minutes passed, other tables got their food, and we sat empty-handed. Two of our party finally complained to multiple staff; our waiter said to calm down and that our food would be ready in another 10 minutes (seriously?); and very soon thereafter, our food finally arrived. No apologies from the restaurant, no follow-up on why the order took another half-hour after their system was allegedly running again, no sign of our appetizers or wine. We were OK w/those last details because after waiting more than an hour, we were ready to leave. Our order finally arrived more than an hour after we had placed it, and the food was fine. After the meal, I asked three employees if I could speak with the manager; each was evasive or said he's hard to reach. Finally, our waiter claimed (no idea whether this is true) that they had no more kitchen staff, the owner was cooking all the food, and the restaurant was due to close in the next few days. The staff helping at the games, bowling, and bar were all friendly and helpful. I also ordered an espresso martini to watch the group bowl, and a Hō Brah (island style old fashioned). The chicken nuggets we ordered for the kids were dry and honestly, I'd prefer Costco or McDonald's nuggets at that point--especially for $15+. The mac and cheese was just okay, but it also came out cold--another $15+ item. Everything is over $20, which would be fine if the food was worth it. My sliders were bland and also cold--no flavor at all. The only saving grace from the food side were the chicken wings--they were crispy and the sauces (especially the spicy one) were great. But--major shout-out to the bartender, Sean. He was awesome--super friendly, welcoming, and made the vibe a lot better amidst the food disappointment. He deserves 5 stars on his own. Now, the arcade itself? Fantastic for the kids! Great selection of games and prizes. We spent $40 and the kids had a blast, taking home some decent prizes. Bottom line: come for the arcade fun, not the food!
