MBC brings back a lot of great memories but not this location, I am referring to the one that closed down further north towards Kapalua. I went there 2-3x during my honeymoon and again anytime I visited Maui. So on my first visit back to Maui in over 5 yrs I had to visit MBC. The views were great. The decor was nice. The beers still good. But the food , the service and the vibes have gone downhill. Happy Hour is really the only highlight but the food was average at best. I want to like MBC Kaanapali. I really do. I was a loyal customer of the Kahana brewpub from the early 2000s until it closed. It was always my first stop after arriving on the island, and usually a place I'd return to several times during each trip. Since Kahana closed and MBC opened its admittedly gorgeous location on Kaanapali Beach, though, it just hasn't been the same. Other than the view and nostalgia, there's no longer much reason for us to visit. 1. The beer One of the things that made the old Kahana brewpub special was the local vibe and the huge selection of interesting beers. The Kaanapali location seems to have about half as many choices, with most of them being pretty standard, safe options aimed at the majority tourist population and generally only one seasonal or unusual beer. This time, that was Pineapple Mana Wheat. It's a perfectly fine beer, but having it as essentially the only non-standard option was disappointing -- and frankly, boring. 2. The food Something goes wrong with the food EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. we try to eat at the Kaanapali location. Sometimes the food itself is bad - not fresh, or just not good. Sometimes the order gets messed up. It's always something. This time we ordered panko-breaded chicken fingers, and they were bland and barely edible. 3. The service Across all of our visits to the Kaanapali location, the best service we've had has been "decent." At worst, it has been inattentive or downright rude. On our most recent visit, at least the service qualified as decent. What makes all of this more frustrating is that whenever we make the long drive down to the Kihei location, we have a great experience: good food, good service, and a better beer selection. As longtime, O.G. customers, we just wish we didn't have to haul ourselves all the way down to Kihei when we can literally walk to MBC Kaanapali from our resort. We've tried to make it work so many times. Every trip, we come back hoping that maybe this time it will be better. Sadly, after this visit, we've finally accepted that it probably isn't going to get better -- at least not for us. So as sad as it makes us feel to say it, we're letting the west side MBC go. Made reservation on Open Table which was easy - didn't want to risk having to wait for a table with some hangry family members Parking was easy, they validate for 2 hours in the Outrigger Hotel parking garage Took a little bit of exploring to find the restaurant in the hotel - walk through the lobby and when you get to the pool, veer left to find the door - if you veer right, you walk all the way around the restaurant and patio to find the door (ask me how I know ;-) ) Hostess was not friendly and seemed bothered that she needed to seat us - sorry if she was having a bad day... Seated near the window at sunset was nice, we were given water right away and drink orders were taken. Menu didn't have any allergen info on it, get with the decade please and label stuff, so I had to ask the server what was gluten free. She quickly went over the appetizers, salads and sandwiches but didn't cover any of the entrees so I had to ask when she got back and she checked with the kitchen for me - I wanted fish, but was a little tired of fish tacos :) They were able to make the butter fish gluten free for me by leaving off the sauce and the microgreens (shrug why these were left off and the server even laughed when I asked) Okay -the butterfish was flippin amazing - like the BEST meal I had on the island - I wish it had been my first dinner there because I would have had it every single night for a week it was that good!! Excellent location to watch the sunset. Live music every night as well. Great selection of local beer. Our food however wasn't prepared very well. The MBC Cheeseburger was overcooked and very dry. The Kale salad was extremely overdressed. The pork sandwich was actually very tasty however the onion ring on it was cold and stale and hard to chew. Wished it was a better experience overall. Wow! Love this location! Right on the water with beautiful views. It's not overly crowded even when full and everything takes the cortisol levels down a notch! Our waitress was so nice and took the time to get to know us. And of course, the food was fantastic! Highly recommend the pretzels and beer cheese, the Mac nut crusted mahi mahi, and the ribs! The sauce that came with the mahi mahi was to die for the and ribs were a generous portion that I could not finish! Plus they have my favorite beers on tap, what's not to like! Early morning walk and noticed few people sitting inside. Went around the corner to the reception, inquired of there hours and checked out their menu. Had different protein choices, few unique items. Hostess sat us at the edge of the main area overlooking the Black Rock. Very nice. Banana bread was very good. Surprised to see slices of banana on top with drizzle of their caramel sauce. Beautiful restaurant at the Outrigger - came here to celebrate my dad's birthday and it was a nice time! The service was a bit slow, but our waiter was nice, and the views and live music were so lovely that I didn't mind too much. The chips + dip and calamari fries were great appetizers - good to share for our party of 6. The queso was warm and savory, really good! I had the Kabayaki Butterfish and it was delicious. Fish was very soft and sauce was sticky and sweet. The rice was a little clumpy but not bad. The Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi was really tasty, and the Guava BBQ Ribs were sweet and tender! My wife and I had such a great time with the buttermilk pancakes at Maui Brewing! They were so light, fluffy, delicious, and huge! I'm a big eater, but these pancakes were so large that we should have shared them. Sipping delicious and inventive local beers while gazing out at the ocean and Molokai in the distance is an unbeatable way to spend a couple of hours in the afternoon. And the food is good too. Our server was Tessa and smugly claimed she was 'not allowed' to accept a valid, unexpired U.S. Military ID for drinks, yet moments later turned around and accepted an EXPIRED driver's license from someone else at our table. Rejecting a valid federal military ID is unacceptable, and accepting an expired license is a direct violation of Maui County liquor laws. She blamed the restaurant for not accepting the military ID, is that really Maui Brewing Co's stance? Between the okay food and off-putting service, I cannot recommend this place. Management should retrain their team and consider supporting military service members better. On a lighter note, the upbeat hosts were friendly and got us seated during sunset with live music. I preferred the feel of the old location in Napili as that was more like a tasting room but this place is beautiful and the view is outstanding. We went at sunset and listed to some music. The beer was great (we had a few). To eat, we had the tortilla chips and trio of dips (good but the chips were stale - I should have just asked for some new ones). I had the Fish and Chips (fish was a bit dry - 3.5/5). My daughter had the Guava BBQ Sando (really good - 4/5). We also tried the Butterfish (6/5). The service was 5/5. Tried to walk in for a table for two and got denied seating. Apparently, their policy required covered bottoms but their sign at the host stand clearly only stated "shirt, shoes, cover ups". The Sheraton had no issues seating us nor did Leilani's. This is a beach front establishment, it's expected that you have patrons who walk up from the beach or the pool (in swimsuits). And to cherry pick who you allow in despite patrons adhering to your dress code is just bad business. The hostess then had the gall to suggest we order to-go drinks. The pork bao buns were not buns but tacos and the pork was so tiny in there they should have at least added some more veggies or something - it was mostly bread and would not have been worth it at full price. Excited to visit for dinner again, but still only 4 star worthy. Mainly because of the Ocean Kung Pao cocktail...I loved it last couple of visits and was looking forward to toasting sunset with it again. When I ordered it the server warned me it was spicy. Nice sized serving accompanied by tartar sauce Butterfish - melt in the mouth with a nice tangy sauce, yummy mushrooms and green beans with a crunch, and I subbed sweet potato mash instead of rice. Small sized serving but delish Steak and fries - Cooked perfectly medium as asked and tasty and very garlicky fries which were crunchy and very pungent Overall it was a good meal, just a huge let down in the cocktail department. There was live music by a singer with an electric guitar which was too loud so it was hard to talk over, plus the music was the usual 70s outdated stuff. We came for dinner and the ocean views are terrific during sunset. The restaurant is spacious and there's ton of natural sunlight and airflow. We've been to the location in Kihei where there's live music and we expected the same here, only to be told that they don't have live music at this location. Food wise, I thought it was ok. We got the pork belly baos, fish and chips, and braised short rib. I really enjoyed the pork belly baos - it was super fatty and basically melted in your mouth. The fish and chips were whatever - your run of the mill staple while the short rib was decent. The carrots and zucchini were not cooked at all. However, the reason why you're coming here is probably for the beer and with that, it's a great spot to grab a drink and soak in the ambiance and vibes. read more

Well the rain earlier in the day shut down their outside tables though it was dry out. So our quickest walk in dining option was the bar which we usually don't mind.... After seating it took a long time to get service. Even though he was right there. So in a restaurant run by and named after the big local brewer ran out of two of their beers, one of which was the only one I would drink. I'm not a huge beer consumer but when I do drink it I know what I like and they don't serve any other brand options. Wasn't in the mood for hard drinks so I just went water. He gave me a sampler of something and I asked if it was ipa even though I told him I don't care for that style. It was ipa.... So I got water and the wife got a Maui mile which she liked. Menu was mostly bar food, burgers and fish also not my style so much. So eventually we got to order and just opted for some fries and a pork belly bao sliders to share. Food was ok but not exciting. The only good part of the sliders was the pork belly snd completed with pickle slices and the ubiquitous sriracha aioli that every restaurant around here seems to drizzle on everything! Yuk. Not a fan and I avoided the dishes at lunch with the same thing smothered with it. I would suggest a mildly spicy house made kimchee or pickled anything that is grown on the islands but that wouldn't pass with the haole tourists I guess. I had to wave down the bartender to help the young lady standing behind me waiting a while too to order a drink while she waited for a table. We were planning on taking family members arriving tomorrow there for dinner but I'm not even going to consider that. After one cocktail, water, and a couple apps it was almost $60 out the door and I went home still hungrier than when I went in.
