We sat in the dine in reservation side. There's also a more casual side of the restaurant. Pros: great views, ambiance (ocean view right next to the sand) and great service, everyone is so friendly here. Cons: food is okay. not terrible but for the price, it was underwhelming We tried the filet mignon (my favorite of the dishes we tried), off menu red snapper special (tasted a bit too fishy) and broccolini side (too vinegar / lime for me), and gave us a free hula pie for celebrating a birthday here. Always busy but made busier now after the horrific Lahaina fires, it seems all those folks that used to cruise Lahaina are now meandering through Whaler Village now. (Sorry I digress!) Located in Whalers Village, Hula Grill offers a beautiful setting right off Kaanapali Beach, with easy access to the scenic beach path that stretches a couple miles along the shoreline. We visited with a large party, and the restaurant was accommodating in seating us away from the sandy beachfront area, which helped with my mother-in-law's wheelchair. That said, the host seemed a bit annoyed when I requested the change--not the best first impression. Thankfully, our server Amber turned things around with attentive service and great menu recommendations. The crab wontons were a standout--crispy with a spicy, flavorful sauce that was so good I ended up using it with my main dish. It has a kick too!! I love a good spice. I ordered the fresh island fish with a lemon-based sauce and rice, which was solid. The Liliko'i Rita, however, was underwhelming and tasted watered down. Our bill came out to around $500 for 8 adults and 1 child. Overall, the food and setting were enjoyable, but for the price, it didn't quite feel worth it. If I could give it a half star, it would be a 3.5. The restaurant was kind enough to offer free desserts to our birthday celebrants. However, they might have scored higher if the host hadn't shown disdain when I requested to be moved. Why would you seat someone in the "beach sand" seating area if they are using a wheelchair? I was pretty disappointed in this restaurant. I found the food to be lacking of flavor and not very good for the price. I ordered a pork shank and was impressed with the rice and onions but not the pork itself. My husband enjoyed his steak but I found the portion to be tiny to justify a $60 price point. I also found the sauce to give a Salisbury steak type of feel, and it was not my cup of tea. It was cooked well, however. Unfortunately, my favorite thing was the bread. Our waitress was really nice and followed up on us but the hostess stand could use some work. We actually wanted fish and chips when we went but didn't realize there were two different check ins. Realizing it later, I overheard them offering the casual side to the couple in front of us in line but they didn't offer it to us. They honestly had a bad attitude, which I thought was kind of a bummer since we were fine with the 2 hour wait in the rain and didn't give push back. So this is one of the many choices along the beach walk near Whalers Village and convenient to our condo. Like others here it's hard to get excited about different versions of the same offerings. We didn't notice but yet did.... It's got two sides. The "fine dining" side and the beach bar side. We opted for a table in the very course side next to the live entertainment in the uncomfortable sand. Really the best part of this meal was the entertainment and watching the nice lady including some adorable little girls from a tourist family in a hula lesson! Really cute all around. We were confused as we saw steaks while waiting but not in our menu. They were great about us ordering off of each menu after we asked. I really got excited about a pork chop meal on the beach bar menu but Alas it was just a sandwich! So my wife and I ordered the higher end marinated beef rib over coconut rice and kimchi. The others got a steak and another dish I don't recall. The steak was good but quite expensive for what it was. The rib was just a boneless block of marinated grilled beef over a mushy coco rice and very bland kimchi. It was ok. I don't care for coconut and don't like mushy rice. But my wife liked it. It did not like me later "gas wise"! Overall it was the expensive first night meal for our daughter and the boyfriend with great atmosphere and entertainment but not a let's go back meal at all. read more

We stopped by Hula Grill for a late lunch during our trip. Unfortunately, only outdoor seating was available at the time. It was quite sunny, and there weren't any fans around to help with the heat, which made it a little uncomfortable. Even though it's an oceanfront restaurant, the view is partially blocked by a grass wall/fencing around the seating area, so you don't really get to enjoy the ocean as much as you'd expect. Another small thing to keep in mind is that the tables are placed directly on the sand, so walking around requires a bit of care. To start, we ordered the Fresh Squeezed Mai Tai and the Mauna Kea Mango Mai Tai. The classic Mai Tai was good and refreshing, but the mango version tasted a bit watered down. For appetizers, we tried the coconut calamari and crab wontons. The calamari was actually quite good--lightly crispy with a subtle coconut flavor that paired nicely with the dipping sauce. The crab wontons, however, were just okay. The crab meat seemed fresh, but overall the dish lacked flavor and didn't really stand out. My husband has been on a mission to find the best fish and chips on the island, so he ordered that here as well. They were decent--fresh and nicely cooked--but they couldn't quite match the flavor and freshness we had earlier at another oceanfront spot (Mala Ocean Tavern). I was taking a break from seafood and ordered the Thai chicken flatbread, which unfortunately was not very good and lacked flavor. To try to elevate it, we asked our server for some hot sauce. He brought out two local hot sauces, and wow--they were fiery! One of them was a pineapple hot sauce, which I added to my flatbread, and surprisingly it made the dish much better. Overall, the experience was just okay--nothing particularly memorable considering the location and expectations. There are definitely better dining options around, so this is probably a place you could skip. read more

It was our last night in Maui, so we decided to have an early dinner at Hula Grill Kaanapali. Located right by the beach at Whalers Village, we didn't have a reservation but were still able to get seated inside. While many people come for the outdoor seating and ocean views, we didn't mind at all, Maui is beautiful no matter where you are. The restaurant offers both a casual "Barefoot Bar" menu and a sit-down dinner menu depending on where you're seated. We were told that our section was actually the only area in the entire restaurant where you could order from both menus, which was a nice bonus. We were a little bummed that ono fish wasn't available that evening, but we ended up sharing the Hawaiian ceviche, mango BBQ ribs, mushrooms, coconut seafood chowder, and Mahi fish tacos. I would skip the mango BBQ ribs next time, but everything else was quite tasty. My favorites were the house-made taro chips that came with the ceviche and the fish tacos. I also ordered a non-alcoholic lavender lemonade, which was refreshing. Our server was friendly, helpful, and did a great job explaining the dishes. Parking validation is also available, which was convenient. Overall, a nice way to wrap up our last night in Maui. read more

The views of this restaurant are the best. We had a reservation for 5:45 and we had dinner while watching the sunset change into so many patterns and colors. It was just magical! Now... on to the food: 2 appetizers (delicious) - my drink was a hibiscus something...which was good. I ordered the localicious salad and the saffron rice which was Divine. So happy I ordered that. This is the best dinner we've had in Maui so far. The food was immaculate! I've never had such a good gluten free burger in my life. My partner loved the mango bbq ribs and Caesar salad. Located at the end of Whaler's village, Hula grill is a great spot if you want to dine with an ocean front view. If you aren't in the main dining room, you're able to sit at a table on the sand (which is quite dirty). This area was called the Barefoot Bar. They should do a better job at deterring birds from swarming the area. We constantly had to keep shooing away all the birds that kept coming for all of the food droppings. The food isn't spectacular and I thought was pretty mediocre. You're essentially paying for the views and vibes. I got the fish tacos and thought it was average - the fish itself was a little dry - the tortilla was basic. We also got an order of the fish and chips - way too much batter if you ask me. The fries were decent though. The hula pie was unique and definitely the highlight of the meal - it's the name of the restaurant after all. Our second night in Maui and we decided to dine at Hula Grill. Note there are two different sections to this restaurant. The Beach bar and the dinner section. There are two different menu offers as well. I had seen something on the menu not realizing it was for the beach bar only and our reservations were for the dinner section of the restaurant. You can only do a wait list for the beach bar once you've arrived. Dinner was good as I ordered the mango glazed ribs and surf and turf pot stickers. Both were delicious ! I just had to mentally switch gears as I was looking g forward to ordering something else initially. We ended our meals with their famous hula pie which completed the meal perfectly! What a lovely lunch at Hula Grill. We were seated in the beach view area of the restaurant. My husband asked if they could split the Chicken Chop Salad in half, and they happily obliged. The food was delicious the fish was fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. For dessert, we had the original Hula Pie. This is another Maui restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean and a beach. Located in the Whalers Village, this is also a destination stop for shopping. We had an early dinner as the restaurant was just starting to fill up. They offer an early fixed price menu from 4:30 to 5:15 which we all took advantage of, a 2 course meal for only $34. For my dinner I had their Localicious Salad and their Mango BBQ Duloc Pork Ribs. The salad was very good, not a typical pile of lettuce but with local produce items, topped with rings of Maui onions. Lime ginger miso dressing just made it more unique to me. The ribs were good and messy to eat. I liked the BBQ sauce which did overwhelm the ribs themselves. We finished the meal by getting their Original Hula Pie. While not part of the fixed price meal it was a must try for us tourists, a large wedge of macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate crust, hot fudge, whipped cream, and some toasted macadamia nuts. Located in Kaanapali , large parking lot for whalers village where you can get free parking if you validate your ticket at any of the restaurants here. Restaurant is right on the beach , so you get a beautiful view while dining. They have two dining experiences on the right side they have fine dining and on the left they have more a casual menu. Where they serve there casual menu is also where the have live music within that same section but if you choose fine dining you can still hear the music so no worries. Service was great our server checked in on us consistently and had a great demeanor. Only thing was that I wish she would have explained the menu a little better since this was our first time here. We started with - Lobster, Shrimp & Scallop Potstickers --5/10 *These were okay just tasted like potstickers I guess nothing special wouldn't order these next time as I though they would have actual pieces of chunky lobster shrimp and scallops but it's more like all mushed and blended together. - Poke Tacos* --10/10 *These were great I would order these again they had a good amount of fish in the taco. They were tasty , fresh and had a great flavor to them. - Hawaiian Ceviche* --7/10 Lots of chunks of seafood in a creamy lemon sauce served with taro chips. Good flavor -Coconut Seafood Chowder --5/10 Just not what I expected. The flavor was not bad but it wasn't tasteful to me. Way too much onions and mushrooms. I was expecting something closer to clam chowder but this tasted very different. - Pineapple Upside-Down Cake --10/10 This was delicious. Would go back just for some dessert. Been here many times. Great location on the beach. However, we got a bad table behind the bar, no view and noisy. The MaiTais seemed watered down which all at the table commented on. Because we had a res we were seated in the quiter reserved side with a beautiful view of the ocean (see pic). Most every seat in this place is nice but I liked the reserve side. It was quieter. Our server was Amanda and she was amazing. She was friendly and enthusiastic. She took care of us! Like when she found out we had some locals with us she hooked us up with their focaccia bread. She brought extra Worcestershire Sauce for each of us. Little touches like that make for an excellent server. We shared the Tomahawk and local Snapper. Our food was so good!!! If you have the discount card with Marriott properties they throw in a free hula pie to boot. Also forgot to mention that we had some drinks - she had the Kauna Mea Mango (or something like that) which had mezcal, jalapeno, tajin / I had the the Akamai Tai - she enjoyed hers, mine was okay. We had a reservation. Why did we need to wait 20 minutes for a table. When we finally were seated, it was a crappy table along the path where people were coming and going. On the other hand, our server, Hakea, was terrific. She had the kitchen split our salad. We had an issue of a highly over salted Caesar Salad and she brought us a new one. My husband had the ahi tuna steak and it wasn't as good as other places that he ate it here in Maui. I had the twin lobster tails. It was served with rice that was dry and, although flavorful, the tails were a bit under done. There was live music which was low key and a nice addition. The hula dancer was amazing and graceful The thing that really turned us off is the parking. We rode around for 15 minutes looking for a space in a parking structure that had many spots blocked off. It had tight turns and is extremely dangerous. We won't be going back to Whaler's Village any time soon. read more

During a recent visit to Hula Grill on Ka'anapali Beach, we had repeated issues with undercooked burgers--twice in the same week. We've been coming here for years, but this visit suggested a decline in consistency and quality control compared to the past. On our first visit, the burger (ordered medium-well) arrived undercooked and was remade, but the replacement was still raw inside. On our second visit a few days later, we ordered it well done. It again arrived raw in the center. A manager explained they were training new staff. Instead of reassuring us that steps would be taken to address the issue, she suggested we simply avoid ordering the burger in the future. That was a surprising response--guests should be able to order any menu item with confidence it will be prepared correctly and safely. While the burgers were removed from our bill both times, being served undercooked burgers twice in one week--including a remade order--points to a broader operational issue that needs attention from management. We would still consider returning, but with higher expectations for consistency and food safety. read more

The food was Not outstanding, but it was just another seaside shack that you could go and enjoy but other than that, there was a great walking area next to the restaurant in lot store shopping you can sit down and chill and relax with family perfect way to wait until Your called in for the table. Very fun spot near the beach with live music. Even though it was dark after sunset, the vibe didn't feel that way at all given the gregarious nature of the servers and the relaxed aura of the restaurant. We got the pork sandwich (from the bar menu), the taro veggie burger, the spinach side, and the hula pie. All were awesome. The taro veggie burger was a new flavor I had not experienced before, and the spinach contained well assembled flavors. The hula pie was a massive dessert portion (note that much of it is essentially ice cream cake). We also got a Kona light beer, which provided for a smooth complement to the savory dishes. All the waitstaff personnel were easygoing and helpful, but Rick was especially legit with his sheer knowledge of the restaurant and the area overall (Rickipedia). This spot is soo underrated! I actually love this place more than Monkeypod for dinner. Best Mai Tai (get the original fresh squeezed) on the island! Duke's is Hula Grill's sister restaurant so the Mai Tai tastes the same. The furniture is more outdated but it gives a family, cozy feel. It's actually located closer to beachfront than Monkeypod too. You have to come for dinner sunset for the best experience. There's live music, and after the sun goes down there are hula dancers. The salsa was nice a Smoky and came with a bit of guacamole. Hawaiian fruit and greens -- I can't say enough about this salad! I can eat this all day long! The lilikoi mint dressing is light and slight sweet, very refreshing. Love the exotic fruits like star fruit and dragon fruit. We added fish to the salad and the fish was juicy and tender. Kahlua pork and pineapple -- generous amount of pork and crust was very nice. Fish and chips -- I was told that was also very good. Overall a great place for lunch.
