We've been coming here since 1998 and it's great to see the restaurant is still thriving. I've never written a review of Hula Grill though it is one of our favorite restaurants. The ambiance is laid back with the beach bar and grill. It has a beautiful view of the ocean with great sunsets. We usually eat in the dining room and one of my favorite meals was the Macadamia nut encrusted Opakapaka. Since Opakapaka is hard to come by these days, it is no longer on the menu. I want to take this occasion to write about the fantastic meal I had the other night. First, our server Michelle was really wonderful. She had a great sense of humor and made our dining experience all that more memorable. The daily fish special was Onaga and we had never had it. Michelle mentioned it's hard to come by and recommended it. The fish was amazing - very fresh, moist and very similar to Opakapaka. If you ever see if on the menu, get it. It will be a memorable experience. The fish was served on a bed of rice with a beurre blanc finish and fresh carrots. An amazing preparation. I would also recommend the Hula Pie for desert. The sun was setting which was actually a bit too bright from our vantage point. Service was fast despite being on Hawaii time. We ordered some interesting sounding drinks. They tasted great. I wish we had read some of the reviews before coming here. Upon walking in, there was a 5-minute wait (no big deal), and we were escorted to outdoor seating to enjoy the beautiful scenery! We were a party of 4, placed our orders, and within 2 minutes our food arrived. I mean.. I love fast service, and I appreciate that our food came out so quickly, but it was lukewarm. We ordered the Kiawe roasted vegetable dip, fish and chips, and Kapulu Joe, and they were okay. The roasted vegetable dip tasted more like a salsa to all of us; the fish and chips were soggy, and the Kapulu Joe was alright, nothing to write home about. It tasted like a pulled pork sandwich, and we all agreed it was the best thing on the table. Will we go there again? most likely not. Conveniently located inside Whalers Village right on the beach, this is one of the restaurants recommended if you're looking for a sit-down meal with a beautiful ocean view. Expect a wait but make a reservation in advance if you can. We started with the ahi tuna crispy rice, which was absolutely delicious. The crispy rice had the perfect crunch, while the fresh ahi, creamy sauce, and sesame seeds made every bite memorable. For my entrée, I had the coconut seafood chowder, served with rice. It was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor without being overly heavy. The seafood was perfectly cooked, and the fresh herbs and vegetables added a wonderful balance. We also ordered a side of broccolini, which was cooked perfectly and made a great addition to the meal. The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed with an island vibe. Between the delicious food, beachfront setting, and welcoming service, this is a spot we'd gladly return to. When in Kaanapali, hit up Whalers Village for Hula Grill. One of the better Americanized hawaiian food. And BEST kids menu hands down. It's gonna be expensive, so know that coming in. We started with some clams, and for that price you only got like 6 clams. Knowing that now I would skip! Stick with just a salad and entree. We got the Caesar salad, it was pretty good. My entree was the ahi tuna slightly seared. This restaurant is one of the only places I know that can cook an ahi tuna right. Other places we've been too tends to overcook it. Hula grill got it right. It was delicious. My husband got the Mac nut fish, and he said it was ok. He said it needed a better beurre Blanc sauce. Maybe with some citrus. It lacked flavor. But the best thing here was the kids menu. When we went they had a $20 petite filet with mash potatoes. It was perfectly cooked. My 2 year old ate ALL 4oz of the filet! It was that good. I tried a little piece and hot damn, what a deal. The best kids menu deal when they have it available! Get it. It was our anniversary, so the server gave us a celebratory hula pie. So good. Hula Grill in Kaanapali delivers an unforgettable oceanfront meal! The absolute star of the night was the filet mignon. It was fabulous, and the unexpected touch of mint elevated the flavor beautifully. We also indulged in the famous "Hula Pie" for dessert. Decadent is an understatement! It is absolutely massive--definitely enough for 4 people and not to be missed.To be fair, the service was somewhat slow, but the incredible food completely made up for it. Nearly 10 years after our honeymoon, we returned to Maui with our 7 year old son, and we came here for dinner our first night. My husband ordered the Hawaiian ceviche to start, and he really really liked it. I also thought it was pretty good, the coconut flavor was a nice addition since we're used to Mexican-style ceviche. I had the poke bowl, and I thought it was great. All of the accompaniments were spot on. The spicy cucumbers and bamboo shoots in particular. Loved the outdoor vibe. We wanted to stay for the show at 7pm but they are fast! We were done by 6 and were completely satiated so had to give up the table. Note in the photos what we had. The seafood platter and pork shank were straight FIRE but everything save the salt-rubbed steak were very good. I was disappointed with the size and tenderness of the Mahi-Mahi dish and at that price it should have been awesome, but I guess it was ok. I wouldn't order it again. My partner & I had a good experience here for lunch. We got sat outside which was nice but it got hot really fast. I wish we sat inside or under the fans. Hula Grill honored our Open Table request with a beautiful view of bay and sunset. The crowds all fill the walkways when the sun sets but the location and Hawaiian music from the barefoot bar makes this a must stop when visiting Kaanapali. Free dessert for special occasions. Our server plus bar servers and food servers ALL wished us a Happy Anniversary! Mahi Macadamia Entree and Grilled Red Snapper Entree were filling and prepared well. Save room for Hula Pie! Focaccia Bread with their signature pepper oil is now extra and not included with meal. This was our only disappointment. Lava Flow is excellent! We've been coming to Hula Grill every time we visit Maui. It's prices have soared over the 20 years, and it's vibe has become nosier from the crowds gathered in Whalers Shopping but it's food and service will be the reason we return next visit. Pros: great views, ambiance (ocean view right next to the sand) and great service, everyone is so friendly here. Cons: food is okay. not terrible but for the price, it was underwhelming We tried the filet mignon (my favorite of the dishes we tried), off menu red snapper special (tasted a bit too fishy) and broccolini side (too vinegar / lime for me), and gave us a free hula pie for celebrating a birthday here. Located in Whalers Village, Hula Grill offers a beautiful setting right off Kaanapali Beach, with easy access to the scenic beach path that stretches a couple miles along the shoreline. We visited with a large party, and the restaurant was accommodating in seating us away from the sandy beachfront area, which helped with my mother-in-law's wheelchair. That said, the host seemed a bit annoyed when I requested the change--not the best first impression. Thankfully, our server Amber turned things around with attentive service and great menu recommendations. The crab wontons were a standout--crispy with a spicy, flavorful sauce that was so good I ended up using it with my main dish. It has a kick too!! I love a good spice. I ordered the fresh island fish with a lemon-based sauce and rice, which was solid. The Liliko'i Rita, however, was underwhelming and tasted watered down. Our bill came out to around $500 for 8 adults and 1 child. Overall, the food and setting were enjoyable, but for the price, it didn't quite feel worth it. If I could give it a half star, it would be a 3.5. The restaurant was kind enough to offer free desserts to our birthday celebrants. However, they might have scored higher if the host hadn't shown disdain when I requested to be moved. Why would you seat someone in the "beach sand" seating area if they are using a wheelchair? I ordered a pork shank and was impressed with the rice and onions but not the pork itself. My husband enjoyed his steak but I found the portion to be tiny to justify a $60 price point. I also found the sauce to give a Salisbury steak type of feel, and it was not my cup of tea. It was cooked well, however. Unfortunately, my favorite thing was the bread. Our waitress was really nice and followed up on us but the hostess stand could use some work. We actually wanted fish and chips when we went but didn't realize there were two different check ins. Realizing it later, I overheard them offering the casual side to the couple in front of us in line but they didn't offer it to us. They honestly had a bad attitude, which I thought was kind of a bummer since we were fine with the 2 hour wait in the rain and didn't give push back. We had such a great experience & time here. Went for dinner around 5pm on a Tuesday, we had a 45 minute wait, which was fine because live music starts at 6pm. Was seated & helped right away. We stopped by Hula Grill for a late lunch during our trip. Unfortunately, only outdoor seating was available at the time. It was quite sunny, and there weren't any fans around to help with the heat, which made it a little uncomfortable. Even though it's an oceanfront restaurant, the view is partially blocked by a grass wall/fencing around the seating area, so you don't really get to enjoy the ocean as much as you'd expect. Another small thing to keep in mind is that the tables are placed directly on the sand, so walking around requires a bit of care. To start, we ordered the Fresh Squeezed Mai Tai and the Mauna Kea Mango Mai Tai. The classic Mai Tai was good and refreshing, but the mango version tasted a bit watered down. For appetizers, we tried the coconut calamari and crab wontons. The calamari was actually quite good--lightly crispy with a subtle coconut flavor that paired nicely with the dipping sauce. The crab wontons, however, were just okay. The crab meat seemed fresh, but overall the dish lacked flavor and didn't really stand out. My husband has been on a mission to find the best fish and chips on the island, so he ordered that here as well. They were decent--fresh and nicely cooked--but they couldn't quite match the flavor and freshness we had earlier at another oceanfront spot (Mala Ocean Tavern). I was taking a break from seafood and ordered the Thai chicken flatbread, which unfortunately was not very good and lacked flavor. To try to elevate it, we asked our server for some hot sauce. He brought out two local hot sauces, and wow--they were fiery! One of them was a pineapple hot sauce, which I added to my flatbread, and surprisingly it made the dish much better. Overall, the experience was just okay--nothing particularly memorable considering the location and expectations. Very Vegan-Unfriendly The worst food and overall experience on Maui. The waitress was very patient with us, and she deserves extra points for that. However, I had to ask countless questions just to figure out what I could eat as a vegan. Shouldn't be so difficult. A number of dishes could have easily been made vegan but the restaurant/waitress wouldn't budge/accommodate. Not difficult to make potatoes with olive oil instead of butter. While she was kind, there didn't seem to be much effort to come up with any real vegan options or suggest modifications. In the end, I was left choosing from a few side veggie dishes, which were nothing to write home about. The beets were bland and dry, and served without any flavorful sauce to replace the non-vegan one, the carrots were ordinary, and the mushrooms were salty and oily but the tastiest of the three choices. The chef/kitchen lacked any kind of imagination. We made a reservation however the table which was given to us would not have been comfortable with table legs where one was supposed to sit so we had to wait an additional 30 minutes. Overall, this restaurant is not vegan-friendly, and there was little effort to make sure I had an enjoyable meal. I won't be returning. read more

We enjoyed a meal out on the patio, which has a decent amount of shade, thanks to all the umbrellas. Unfortunately, it has a decent amount of birds as well, and I did have to go inside to wash my arm off - thankfully this was before our food arrived and the drinks were safe. (Found out later that my dad also got poo'd on. Blech.) The drinks were tasty though, and the food was pretty good. They're known for having the best fish tacos in the area, and those were enjoyed by a couple in our group. I enjoyed the venting box, though it was a lot of food. Had to share a bit. We came here during a family vacation, and while the service staff was absolutely wonderful--attentive, friendly, and doing their absolute best--the kitchen completely missed the mark. We started with the crab wontons, but they were served cold in the middle. Things went from bad to worse when the daily special, the pork chop, arrived with a hair in it. It was our last night in Maui, so we decided to have an early dinner at Hula Grill Kaanapali. Located right by the beach at Whalers Village, we didn't have a reservation but were still able to get seated inside. While many people come for the outdoor seating and ocean views, we didn't mind at all, Maui is beautiful no matter where you are. The restaurant offers both a casual "Barefoot Bar" menu and a sit-down dinner menu depending on where you're seated. We were told that our section was actually the only area in the entire restaurant where you could order from both menus, which was a nice bonus. We were a little bummed that ono fish wasn't available that evening, but we ended up sharing the Hawaiian ceviche, mango BBQ ribs, mushrooms, coconut seafood chowder, and Mahi fish tacos. I would skip the mango BBQ ribs next time, but everything else was quite tasty. My favorites were the house-made taro chips that came with the ceviche and the fish tacos. I also ordered a non-alcoholic lavender lemonade, which was refreshing. Our server was friendly, helpful, and did a great job explaining the dishes. So this is one of the many choices along the beach walk near Whalers Village and convenient to our condo. Like others here it's hard to get excited about different versions of the same offerings. We didn't notice but yet did.... It's got two sides. The "fine dining" side and the beach bar side. We opted for a table in the very course side next to the live entertainment in the uncomfortable sand. Really the best part of this meal was the entertainment and watching the nice lady including some adorable little girls from a tourist family in a hula lesson! Really cute all around. We were confused as we saw steaks while waiting but not in our menu. They were great about us ordering off of each menu after we asked. I really got excited about a pork chop meal on the beach bar menu but Alas it was just a sandwich! So my wife and I ordered the higher end marinated beef rib over coconut rice and kimchi. The others got a steak and another dish I don't recall. The steak was good but quite expensive for what it was. The rib was just a boneless block of marinated grilled beef over a mushy coco rice and very bland kimchi. It was ok. I don't care for coconut and don't like mushy rice. But my wife liked it. It did not like me later "gas wise"! Overall it was the expensive first night meal for our daughter and the boyfriend with great atmosphere and entertainment but not a let's go back meal at all. read more

The views of this restaurant are the best. We had a reservation for 5:45 and we had dinner while watching the sunset change into so many patterns and colors. It was just magical! Now... on to the food: 2 appetizers (delicious) - my drink was a hibiscus something...which was good. I ordered the localicious salad and the saffron rice which was Divine. So happy I ordered that. Located at the end of Whaler's village, Hula grill is a great spot if you want to dine with an ocean front view. If you aren't in the main dining room, you're able to sit at a table on the sand (which is quite dirty). This area was called the Barefoot Bar. They should do a better job at deterring birds from swarming the area. We constantly had to keep shooing away all the birds that kept coming for all of the food droppings. The food isn't spectacular and I thought was pretty mediocre. You're essentially paying for the views and vibes. I got the fish tacos and thought it was average - the fish itself was a little dry - the tortilla was basic. We also got an order of the fish and chips - way too much batter if you ask me. The fries were decent though. The hula pie was unique and definitely the highlight of the meal - it's the name of the restaurant after all. This is another Maui restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean and a beach. Located in the Whalers Village, this is also a destination stop for shopping. We had an early dinner as the restaurant was just starting to fill up. They offer an early fixed price menu from 4:30 to 5:15 which we all took advantage of, a 2 course meal for only $34. For my dinner I had their Localicious Salad and their Mango BBQ Duloc Pork Ribs. The salad was very good, not a typical pile of lettuce but with local produce items, topped with rings of Maui onions. Lime ginger miso dressing just made it more unique to me. The ribs were good and messy to eat. I liked the BBQ sauce which did overwhelm the ribs themselves. We finished the meal by getting their Original Hula Pie. While not part of the fixed price meal it was a must try for us tourists, a large wedge of macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate crust, hot fudge, whipped cream, and some toasted macadamia nuts. Located in Kaanapali , large parking lot for whalers village where you can get free parking if you validate your ticket at any of the restaurants here. Restaurant is right on the beach , so you get a beautiful view while dining. They have two dining experiences on the right side they have fine dining and on the left they have more a casual menu. Where they serve there casual menu is also where the have live music within that same section but if you choose fine dining you can still hear the music so no worries. Service was great our server checked in on us consistently and had a great demeanor. Only thing was that I wish she would have explained the menu a little better since this was our first time here. We started with - Lobster, Shrimp & Scallop Potstickers --5/10 *These were okay just tasted like potstickers I guess nothing special wouldn't order these next time as I though they would have actual pieces of chunky lobster shrimp and scallops but it's more like all mushed and blended together. - Poke Tacos* --10/10 *These were great I would order these again they had a good amount of fish in the taco. They were tasty , fresh and had a great flavor to them. - Hawaiian Ceviche* --7/10 Lots of chunks of seafood in a creamy lemon sauce served with taro chips. Good flavor -Coconut Seafood Chowder --5/10 Just not what I expected. The flavor was not bad but it wasn't tasteful to me. Way too much onions and mushrooms. The absolute best! We have been here at least a half dozen times over the years and it never disappoints. The ambiance is incredible, service always great and the food amazing. This last trip we had the filet, pot stickers (I liked the pork better than seafood), mahi mahi, and of course the focaccia bread with chili water. Everything was great! Party of six, dinner hour, very busy Saturday evening. Expected a wait, seated in 45. Waiter arrived, gave us a quick run down and we ordered drinks. Ordered our meals; burger and fries meal was great, ceviche plate was good, fish tacos were edible (cool and tough), salad was good (dressing arrived on the side, as ordered).
