Today my parents and their friends and I went to Hula Grill which is located at Whalers Village. It is beautifully situated on the beach with an open air beach area where you can dine and some seats are even in the sand! My mom got the Mai tai and I got the Yuzu Lemonade which were both heavy pours and delicious! My mom and I both got the grilled mahi mahi tacos which were delicious and my dad got the Hawaiian fruit salad which he really enjoyed. The service was impeccable and the waitress was so friendly and kind. Definitely a great place to get lunch or dinner with a gorgeous view.
This review is specifically for Edwardo he is the absolute best server I have ever had in my entire life. Never have I been treated this well!! He went above and beyond to make sure we had the best service. I HIGHLY recommend the Hula pie you MUST get this dessert at least once (maybe 2x ;) ) it's THAT good! Do not skip out on visiting this restaurant. They have a "bar type menu" and a standard menu more upscale. Get the upscale one. Get the macadamia nut crusted mahi-mahi! Bonus points for a great kids menu!! please go here when you visit Maui specifically wailers village. You won't regret it.
We had an opentable reservation. They sat us quickly. We sat in the back of the main area with a small view of the ocean. The sun was setting which was actually a bit too bright from our vantage point. Service was fast despite being on Hawaii time. We ordered some interesting sounding drinks. They tasted great. We kept it light for dinner. I had a crusted fish. My wife had a caesar salad. Overall, very nice restaurant that's quite busy at all times.
Conveniently located inside Whalers Village right on the beach, this is one of the restaurants recommended if you're looking for a sit-down meal with a beautiful ocean view. Expect a wait but make a reservation in advance if you can. We started with the ahi tuna crispy rice, which was absolutely delicious. The crispy rice had the perfect crunch, while the fresh ahi, creamy sauce, and sesame seeds made every bite memorable. For my entrée, I had the coconut seafood chowder, served with rice. It was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor without being overly heavy. The seafood was perfectly cooked, and the fresh herbs and vegetables added a wonderful balance. We also ordered a side of broccolini, which was cooked perfectly and made a great addition to the meal. The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed with an island vibe. Between the delicious food, beachfront setting, and welcoming service, this is a spot we'd gladly return to. If you're looking for fresh, flavorful food in Maui with a fantastic view, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. We'll be back the next time we're on the island!
When in Kaanapali, hit up Whalers Village for Hula Grill. One of the better Americanized hawaiian food. And BEST kids menu hands down. It's gonna be expensive, so know that coming in. We started with some clams, and for that price you only got like 6 clams. Knowing that now I would skip! Stick with just a salad and entree. We got the Caesar salad, it was pretty good. My entree was the ahi tuna slightly seared. This restaurant is one of the only places I know that can cook an ahi tuna right. Other places we've been too tends to overcook it. Hula grill got it right. It was delicious. My husband got the Mac nut fish, and he said it was ok. He said it needed a better beurre Blanc sauce. Maybe with some citrus. It lacked flavor. But the best thing here was the kids menu. When we went they had a $20 petite filet with mash potatoes. It was perfectly cooked. My 2 year old ate ALL 4oz of the filet! It was that good. I tried a little piece and hot damn, what a deal. The best kids menu deal when they have it available! Get it. It was our anniversary, so the server gave us a celebratory hula pie. So good. It's nice they recognize your celebratory moment too!
My other half and I rode from town to Hula Grill for our anniversary dinner. Amber was our server for the night and she took great care of us. She was knowledgeable of the menu, super sweet, and made us feel right at home. Poke tacos are a must always, but this time we got 2 orders (comes in 3 tacos per order). We also tried the kiawe grilled filet mignon (medium rare) with togarashi shrimp (split onto 2 plates) and at the end of dinner, Amber brought out a hula pie for our anniversary. We love Hula Grill and definitely a spot we recommend to our friends or visitors.
Food was okay, but the service was great. I was pleasantly surprised that they split up the steak into two plates and plated each separately when we told them that we were planning to share the entree. However, the steak was a bit chewy, and the you can't really taste the seafood in the potstickers. Also, despite having made a reservation ahead of time, we were seated pretty far away from the live music, which we were also disappointed by.
Hula Grill in Kaanapali delivers an unforgettable oceanfront meal! The absolute star of the night was the filet mignon. It was fabulous, and the unexpected touch of mint elevated the flavor beautifully. We also indulged in the famous "Hula Pie" for dessert. Decadent is an understatement! It is absolutely massive--definitely enough for 4 people and not to be missed.To be fair, the service was somewhat slow, but the incredible food completely made up for it. As for drinks, the local Mai Tai was good, though not the greatest I've ever had on the island. Pro-tip: Reservations are strongly recommended, but they do accept walk-ins with a short wait. Plus, they offer parking validation which is a huge bonus in this area
We did not make reservations and so were referred to the more casual side where we found the bar! That was lovely, beautiful view of the sunset, live music and hula. We walked a mile from our hotel and back, but you can take a trolley, incredibly convenient way to make a memorable night here. Good burger, great drinks, great company.
Excellent spot if you're looking for fresh fish on the water. Cute tiki bar and tables outside along the water with a beautiful view of countless boats going in and out. Mai tai was good, but my boyfriend thought it was the worst one he has had on the island. Fish tacos were very tasty. Kids cheeseburger came out fast and taste pretty good, we had the option of french fries or pineapple which I thought was great. Pulled pork sandwhich was tasty and came with french fries. The hula pie is a must get if you're interested in dessert. It's HUGE but sooo good!
Nearly 10 years after our honeymoon, we returned to Maui with our 7 year old son, and we came here for dinner our first night. My husband ordered the Hawaiian ceviche to start, and he really really liked it. I also thought it was pretty good, the coconut flavor was a nice addition since we're used to Mexican-style ceviche. I had the poke bowl, and I thought it was great. All of the accompaniments were spot on. The spicy cucumbers and bamboo shoots in particular. For his entree, my husband got the burger and he downed it. My son got the grilled cheese. Definitely happy with our choices. Mahalo!
We loved Hula Grill so much that we came back for a second dinner during our Maui vacation, and it was every bit as wonderful the second time! I had the grilled Ono, and it was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked, tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. It was one of those meals you're still thinking about afterward. My husband had the Chef's Tasting Menu and loved everything. He started with the seafood potstickers and Caesar salad, followed by the macadamia nut-crusted mahi mahi. The mahi mahi was gorgeous and cooked perfectly, and the macadamia crust made it something special. What we really appreciate about Hula Grill is that it delivers the whole Maui experience: wonderful fresh seafood, beautiful presentation, a relaxed atmosphere, and food that is genuinely memorable. Coming back a second time on the same vacation says a lot when there are so many restaurants to choose from on Maui. Hula Grill has definitely earned a place on our "must return" list. An absolutely fantastic meal and a wonderful way to spend one of our last evenings in Maui. Highly recommend, especially the fresh fish!
Amazing beachside dining with live music, attentive service, and delicious food! The calamari and ceviche with taro chips were fantastic, and the lychee martini was so refreshing! They offer both casual and fine dining. I tried casual this time and will definitely be back to experience fine dining next!

We specifically picked this restaurant because of the advertised hula show (which is in the name of the restaurant), so unfortunately, that ended up being the most disappointing part of the experience. There was only one woman performing hula, and she danced about every other song for roughly an hour. I was expecting more of a traditional show with a more consistent performance, so this felt pretty underwhelming compared to what was advertised. If you're coming specifically for the entertainment, I'd probably temper your expectations. The food, on the other hand, was pretty good overall. For entrees, I got the crab topped mahi mahi, which I really enjoyed. The fish was nicely prepared, and I especially liked the crunchy macadamia nuts, which added a great texture. The coconut sauce was delicious and complemented the fish well, but there was barely any crab on top, and I wish they had been more generous with both the crab and the sauce. We also tried the roasted pork shank, which was tasty and had a rich, pronounced pork flavor. This is definitely a dish for people who really love pork, since the flavor is quite strong. It came with risotto and onions, which had a nice tanginess that helped balance the richness of the meat. Like the fish, though, I thought it could have used more sauce. The Mai Tai was decent but wasn't particularly strong, and I was expecting a little more of a noticeable alcohol flavor. We finished with the Hula Pie, which was huge and delicious. It's made with vanilla ice cream mixed with chunks of macadamia nuts, topped with chocolate, and served in a chocolate cookie crust. I initially expected the ice cream itself to be macadamia flavored, but it was vanilla with macadamia pieces mixed throughout. Still, the combination of creamy ice cream, crunchy nuts, and chocolate was really good, and the portion was generous enough to share. An added bonus was that it was free with our hotel discount, which made it an even better deal. Overall, the food was enjoyable, and I'd say the mahi mahi and Hula Pie were the highlights. However, since we specifically chose this restaurant for the hula show, the disappointing entertainment was a pretty big letdown. I'd consider coming back for the food, but I wouldn't choose it again if I were looking for a memorable Hawaiian cultural performance. read more
First time in Maui, first meal after arriving. I'd tried the Hula Grill in Waikiki and thought the food was good, not wow, but this was a choice made by others in our small group, so I just went along because of the excellent location by the Whalers Village shopping center on one side, and the beach and ocean views on the other. Unfortunately, we were a bit delayed by our flight and hotel check in that we got here a bit late, after the sun had already set.....sadly, we missed that. The place was absolutely packed!.....but we had reservations, checked in, and waited about 10 minutes after our reservation time, and was then given a pretty decent table inside vs an outdoor table closer to the beach. Service was nice, friendly, and helpful.....so no complaints about that. As for the food....whilst walking to our table, we saw servers carrying trays of yummy looking fish and chips and tacos, but later found out that they were serving diners at the bar area, so these items were not available in the more "formal" Hula Grill restaurant section....bummer. Anyway, it was getting a bit late for us on California time, so we all chose to eat light...I orderd the Chilled Seafood Platter, and others in the group ordered the Grilled Fish, Roasted beets, Wok Charred Iwamoto Noodles, Seafood Poststickers, and ended everything with a huge slice of their signature Hula Pie. My Seafood Platter was served chilled with Kiawe charred sashimi grade ahi, a couple of small lobster tails, grileld and chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail, and some sides of kimchi, and wasabi. Yes, everything was very fresh and delicious, but I truly expected the portion to be much bigger, considering it's called a "Platter." Was a bit disappointed as others at our table wanted to try some of my seafood, but I had to say NO as I would be left with close to nothing to eat had I shared it. The other issue we all had was with the Lobster, Shrimp, and Scallop Potstickers. It came with a measly 5 small and flat pieces with so little stuffing that you couldn't even taste the seafood inside....even if you had put the whole thing in your mouth at once. It just need much more stuffing.....or what's the point? Whilst walking to the mens room, I walked by the kitchen and saw several plates of other dishes being put out for servers to serve to the diners......yea, the portion sizes of everything were so tiny!!! This is not something I really expected from such a restaurant......yea, the quiality may be quite good, but you'd never fill up on any of these entrees. It was a pretty good experience here, but it was more about the setting than the food. read more
Great location in the Whaler's Village by the beach with gorgeous sunsets. We experienced their fine dining by reservation (they also have a first come first serve bar area by the beach with a different menu). We were seated in the main building by an open window /doorway area. We tried... * Lobster, Scallop, Shrimp Potstickers -- Meh ...Just 4 pieces for $25. Couldn't really make out any lobster or scallop. I'd skip this one. * Wood Grilled Fish -- This was pretty good. Nicely grilled fresh local fish with sauteed local veggies, red quinoa and goat cheese. * Roasted Beets -- Side dish of local red beets with onions and spiced Mac nut. * Wok Charred Noodles -- Side dish of noodles with veggies and garlic. Good tasty side dish good for sharing. * Hula Pie Dessert (complimentary for our Anniversary celebration). Mac nut ice cream with chocolate cookie crust and chocolate fudge. This is the bomb. Great dessert to share. Service was friendly and attentive. Food can be a bit pricey, but I guess it's to be expected for a total tourist spot in Kaanapali with ocean views. read more

Hula Grill was fantastic! We sat at the casual dining beachbar for sunset dinner, waited about 25 minutes. We ordered the Chinese chicken salad, it was great with all the veggies but the dressing itself was not the best soy dressing. We also ordered the Teriyaki Glazed Short Rib and beer battered style fish tacos which were absolutely delicious! We shared all plates and it was very nice that they split the salad and tacos into two dishes for us. Lastly, the hula pie was the perfect sweet ending. It They even had live music!! Would definitely come back. read more
My partner & I had a good experience here for lunch. We got sat outside which was nice but it got hot really fast. I wish we sat inside or under the fans. We ordered cocktails, the poke tacos, fish tacos and the hula pie. I enjoyed the poke tacos!! The fish tacos were average. The pie was delicious! They had live music outside when we went. I'd come again. They also do validate parking which was great! read more

Always enjoy the Hula Grills, big menu of fresh food. Several on the islands. We had a happy time here, we keep coming back. Good variety in menu. Lots of fruit, veg, protein options. Food is always good. The 3 of us had great meals, enjoyed outdoor shaded, sandy seating. Fun and fantastic! Good service, fast and Jackie was delightful. Mahalo! We sat in the dine in reservation side. There's also a more casual side of the restaurant. Pros: great views, ambiance (ocean view right next to the sand) and great service, everyone is so friendly here. Cons: food is okay. not terrible but for the price, it was underwhelming We tried the filet mignon (my favorite of the dishes we tried), off menu red snapper special (tasted a bit too fishy) and broccolini side (too vinegar / lime for me), and gave us a free hula pie for celebrating a birthday here. Hula pie was giant and delicious and very sweet they gave it to us for a birthday. read more
Hula Grill has a very solid happy hour, if you can find a seat! Always busy but made busier now after the horrific Lahaina fires, it seems all those folks that used to cruise Lahaina are now meandering through Whaler Village now. (Sorry I digress!) Back to the food, if you can hit the happy hour prices and get a spot at the bar it's hard to beat this atmosphere. read more
Located in Whalers Village, Hula Grill offers a beautiful setting right off Kaanapali Beach, with easy access to the scenic beach path that stretches a couple miles along the shoreline. We visited with a large party, and the restaurant was accommodating in seating us away from the sandy beachfront area, which helped with my mother-in-law's wheelchair. That said, the host seemed a bit annoyed when I requested the change--not the best first impression. Thankfully, our server Amber turned things around with attentive service and great menu recommendations. The crab wontons were a standout--crispy with a spicy, flavorful sauce that was so good I ended up using it with my main dish. It has a kick too!! I love a good spice. I ordered the fresh island fish with a lemon-based sauce and rice, which was solid. The Liliko'i Rita, however, was underwhelming and tasted watered down. Our bill came out to around $500 for 8 adults and 1 child. Overall, the food and setting were enjoyable, but for the price, it didn't quite feel worth it. If I could give it a half star, it would be a 3.5. The restaurant was kind enough to offer free desserts to our birthday celebrants. However, they might have scored higher if the host hadn't shown disdain when I requested to be moved. Why would you seat someone in the "beach sand" seating area if they are using a wheelchair? Where's the Aloha spirit? . Disappointing! read more
Came for lunch with my husband. Shared a burger, and poke bowl. Just perfect for 2. Everything was delicious. The service is always good. Darren was the best server. (We've had him before). After lunch we shared a hula pie to celebrate my birthday... with a candle!!!) That was the perfect ending to a perfect lunch. The best part, we had ocean view. Love it! They also have live music!!! Plus... they validate parking for 2 hours. So worth everything.. Will definitely come again. read more
I was pretty disappointed in this restaurant. I found the food to be lacking of flavor and not very good for the price. I ordered a pork shank and was impressed with the rice and onions but not the pork itself. My husband enjoyed his steak but I found the portion to be tiny to justify a $60 price point. I also found the sauce to give a Salisbury steak type of feel, and it was not my cup of tea. It was cooked well, however. Unfortunately, my favorite thing was the bread. Our waitress was really nice and followed up on us but the hostess stand could use some work. We actually wanted fish and chips when we went but didn't realize there were two different check ins. Realizing it later, I overheard them offering the casual side to the couple in front of us in line but they didn't offer it to us. They honestly had a bad attitude, which I thought was kind of a bummer since we were fine with the 2 hour wait in the rain and didn't give push back. All in all, I'd go elsewhere since there's so many food options in Maui. But there's plenty of people who enjoy it so maybe it just wasn't my thing. read more
Loved the outdoor vibe. We wanted to stay for the show at 7pm but they are fast! We were done by 6 and were completely satiated so had to give up the table. Note in the photos what we had. The seafood platter and pork shank were straight FIRE but everything save the salt-rubbed steak were very good. I was disappointed with the size and tenderness of the Mahi-Mahi dish and at that price it should have been awesome, but I guess it was ok. I wouldn't order it again. Bar drinks were good except the Long Island ice tea-had to send it back for another drink. Alex, our server was awesome-friendly and fast and attentive. All in all everyone was super happy and delighted with dinner! We will return. read more

We stopped by Hula Grill for a late lunch during our trip. Unfortunately, only outdoor seating was available at the time. It was quite sunny, and there weren't any fans around to help with the heat, which made it a little uncomfortable. Even though it's an oceanfront restaurant, the view is partially blocked by a grass wall/fencing around the seating area, so you don't really get to enjoy the ocean as much as you'd expect. Another small thing to keep in mind is that the tables are placed directly on the sand, so walking around requires a bit of care. To start, we ordered the Fresh Squeezed Mai Tai and the Mauna Kea Mango Mai Tai. The classic Mai Tai was good and refreshing, but the mango version tasted a bit watered down. For appetizers, we tried the coconut calamari and crab wontons. The calamari was actually quite good--lightly crispy with a subtle coconut flavor that paired nicely with the dipping sauce. The crab wontons, however, were just okay. The crab meat seemed fresh, but overall the dish lacked flavor and didn't really stand out. My husband has been on a mission to find the best fish and chips on the island, so he ordered that here as well. They were decent--fresh and nicely cooked--but they couldn't quite match the flavor and freshness we had earlier at another oceanfront spot (Mala Ocean Tavern). I was taking a break from seafood and ordered the Thai chicken flatbread, which unfortunately was not very good and lacked flavor. To try to elevate it, we asked our server for some hot sauce. He brought out two local hot sauces, and wow--they were fiery! One of them was a pineapple hot sauce, which I added to my flatbread, and surprisingly it made the dish much better. Overall, the experience was just okay--nothing particularly memorable considering the location and expectations. There are definitely better dining options around, so this is probably a place you could skip. read more
It was our last night in Maui, so we decided to have an early dinner at Hula Grill Kaanapali. Located right by the beach at Whalers Village, we didn't have a reservation but were still able to get seated inside. While many people come for the outdoor seating and ocean views, we didn't mind at all, Maui is beautiful no matter where you are. The restaurant offers both a casual "Barefoot Bar" menu and a sit-down dinner menu depending on where you're seated. We were told that our section was actually the only area in the entire restaurant where you could order from both menus, which was a nice bonus. We were a little bummed that ono fish wasn't available that evening, but we ended up sharing the Hawaiian ceviche, mango BBQ ribs, mushrooms, coconut seafood chowder, and Mahi fish tacos. I would skip the mango BBQ ribs next time, but everything else was quite tasty. My favorites were the house-made taro chips that came with the ceviche and the fish tacos. I also ordered a non-alcoholic lavender lemonade, which was refreshing. Our server was friendly, helpful, and did a great job explaining the dishes. Parking validation is also available, which was convenient. Overall, a nice way to wrap up our last night in Maui. read more

Hula Grill honored our Open Table request with a beautiful view of bay and sunset. The crowds all fill the walkways when the sun sets but the location and Hawaiian music from the barefoot bar makes this a must stop when visiting Kaanapali. Free dessert for special occasions. Our server plus bar servers and food servers ALL wished us a Happy Anniversary! Mahi Macadamia Entree and Grilled Red Snapper Entree were filling and prepared well. Save room for Hula Pie! Focaccia Bread with their signature pepper oil is now extra and not included with meal. This was our only disappointment. Lava Flow is excellent! We've been coming to Hula Grill every time we visit Maui. It's prices have soared over the 20 years, and it's vibe has become nosier from the crowds gathered in Whalers Shopping but it's food and service will be the reason we return next visit. Stopped by Hula Grill for lunch. Ara was our amazing server and was friendly, professional and efficient. We started with the Coconut fiz drink which was quite tasty. The ambiance was terrific and the entertainment with a musician playing the electric ukulele and singing was very good. We both ordered the Mahi Mahi fish tacos with chips and they were good. You MUST order the hula pie! I don't usually start my reviews like this... but I must say that! James was our server and was nice and knowledgeable and very polite. Customer service was great. The views of this restaurant are the best. We had a reservation for 5:45 and we had dinner while watching the sunset change into so many patterns and colors. It was just magical! Now... on to the food: 2 appetizers (delicious) - my drink was a hibiscus something...which was good. I ordered the localicious salad and the saffron rice which was Divine. So happy I ordered that. Then coffee and the hula pie! Wow! I highly recommend this restaurant! Oh and the bill was only $120- I was shocked at how good the price was for the entire experience! Not to mention they had hula dancers and live music! Score!!!! read more

Is there a kids menu?
Yes!! My 3 year old got Teriyaki Chicken with coconut rice. There were other items as well. The servers were so kind and understanding to his needs as well!
Is the restaurant ADA compliant?
Yes it is ADA. Lots of space to roll around in wheel chairs, ramps to roll up in.
Is the bar menu different than the restaurant? I want fish tacos? I don't see the bar menu posted online?
Yes I've ordered regular food from the bar cause there was a wait for seating in the dining area so we sat at the bar and ate dinner and dessert.
Does anyone knowing they have reopened the bar area from hostess seating only to walk ins?
The bar is definitely self seating.
What is their tasting menu all about and how much?
This item must be "new" on their menu. Now, I am curious and must check it out the next time we are in Lahaina. I will post once we try it.

Not that I noticed. It has sections open to the sky along with a couple of sections more enclosed. My guess is no, but not sure.
