While we were walking the Kaanapali Beach walkway we noticed a great dining area offering an awesome vibe and said we will have to come back here. So today we walked over to check out the Ulu Kitchen located in the Westin Maui. Short walk from the Marriott Maui Ocean Club down the pathway. Sat on the deck overlooking the beach and took in the ocean breezes. Staff were very attentive and quick to get us settled in to our table. Our server Brandon happily took our drink order bringing back some amazingly cocktails. The Mai Tai had a decadent foam on top unlike your normal Mai Tai that truly made the cocktail unique. Brandon took our order and we took in the beautiful Kaanapali coast and people watched, our food came and we started with a Tako (octopus) prepared in an escargot style served with house made focaccia bread. Great way to start and the sauce full of garlic and butter. The salad was great with the option of chicken or local fish and I took the fish. The smash burger was da bomb! Great quality beef on A soft brioche bun, the French fries had a unique flavor twist prepared with a little rosemary, very good. Loved the feel of the room (if you call it that-solid roof flowing onto lattice and then palapa style umbrellas and completely open on 3 sides. Great music in the background with the ocean views ocean breezes superb cocktails and delizioso food. This was our "Linner" late lunch and early dinner. We came here every day for breakfast, since it was literally 1 minute away. 3 times for breakfast and 1 time for happy hour. During breakfast, they open at 7, and there's a short line. For breakfast, I got the Pete's Benedict and The Cure twice. Pete's Benedict was good, rich hollandaise sauce but couldn't eat it more than 1 day. The Cure is their version of ramen noodles with an Hawaiian twist, they put Kailua pork for the protein, along with an fried egg, and a bunch of veggies - carrots, bok choy, mushrooms, bean sprouts and onions. It was salty, but really good for a night of drinking. It's literally called the cure because it cures hangovers. lol. It was delicious. My husband got the blueberry and lilikoi pancakes one day, it was really good, very Hawaiian. And the kids menu was eggs, bacon and 3 fried potatoes. My toddler enjoyed it every day. They don't serve drinks until 8am, due to state laws. For HH we got the famous mai tai with lilikoi foam, they didn't do it well here. It was too much lemon, felt like you were drinking only lemon juice with some rum, but the lilikoi foam was consistent and good. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. The reviews vary so greatly but glad we stopped by. Special sounded so good that we all got it and it did not disappoint. Everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious from the salad and veggies to the fish to the ravioli. I can't believe I'm saying this but I think the ravioli was the best part of a very scrumptious plate. Reservation was at 6:15pm on Tuesday. We arrived a little early and were seated. Our table was the perfect spot, closest to the ocean. Great for catching the sunset and people watching. Parked in their lot which was quick and easy. I will definitely be back. Amazing breakfast! Getting up early and coming here was definitely worth it! This is an outside restaurant and the view of the water is amazing! Our waiter was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was very good. I was a little skeptical but my eggs were cooked perfectly along with my potatoes, I will say my bacon was a little too crunchy for my liking but it was still very good. I LOVED this restaurant a year ago. It has apparently fallen on hard times. I arrived alone, chose to sit inside. Immediately smelled weed. Ordered champagne which was not very cold or fizzy. And it was pricey. I found it very hard to get the attention of my server. I found it very difficult to even find my server. (Management issue?). I would liked to have ordered wine WITH dinner. Not shortly after my food arrived (and then it had to be opened). I had planned to come here every night this week bc I loved it so much last year. Instead, one and done. Husband got a burger and said it was 8/10. I got coconut shrimp and it was good. I also got the pork pot stickers and they were good but the ginger was overpowering making my mouth kind of burn- so be aware. The famous Mai Thai: I'm so sad but I did not like it and sent it back. Ice cream sandwich was great. I ordered a lavender drink and that one was good! I think this restaurant is worth it for the views but over priced and over hyped for sure. I would not return. Stopped here for breakfast one morning- we were not staying at this hotel. We were told a 45 minute wait which wouldn't work and so I started to walk away. My husband piped up asking about seating at the bar and told it was sine. Would have been nice if the stewardess had told me that! The menu is limited, and it is expensive, and the portions are small. My omelet was good its local ingredients- but small. The side of fruit was good, but small. Ka'anapali beach has a cute little boardwalk along the resorts in the area. This is considered the South side and is Mauis busiest area according to the net. Knowing this, I booked our hotel near this location. On search for food off of our resort we made our way to Whalers Village, oddly enough many of the restaurants were closed or didn't appear to be open. We walked a little further down the boardwalk and there was Ulu Kitchen! Ambiance is everything a restaurant overlooking the ocean should be! Very nice menu! Mixed review for this place. Service was great, the location and outside eating excellent. The food - mixed. I had the poke bowl, which was excellent although for the price was a little small. I also feel if you run a classy joint you don't serve the sauce in a plastic cup. We had the Szechuan beans - so very salty, too much salt for sure. Just a short boardwalk trot away from our resort, Ulu Kitchen is one of the restaurants located at the Westin. Definitely a casual setting with the option of dining indoors or on the patio, Ulu Kitchen is a nice dining choice when perusing the boardwalk. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we only had a chance to eat breakfast, but it was so good, we decided to do it twice. She said her avocado toast was the best she's ever had and my crab-cake Benedict was excellent. I wouldn't say it's the best that I've had but excellent just the same..LOL! Service was impeccable on both visits, however, Karen during our first visit was awesome! She gave us to go drinks, which was definitely a nice touch. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who's staying at any of the resorts sharing the boardwalk, or even the shoppers at Whaler's Village. Everyone is very kind when we come in and the food is good. I strongly recommend the Pete's eggs Benedict. The mai tai flapjacks are also really good, but flapjacks were a little overdone. We would typically go here in the morning for breakfast because it's at our hotel but one of the times the waitress completely forgot to bring our food and when we got it, it was cold so it was sitting for a while. The ambience is very beachy yet classy. The magic dance is a fruity twist to a traditional mimosa which I strongly recommend and the cold brew martini is very good if you like espresso. read more

We stayed at the Westin for 4 days and had voucher at the ulu kitchen for breakfast overlooking the ocean. The views are unbeatable and staff if also very good. They have a fairly small menu and all the items were amazing. We tried switching between a lot of items just to see if we could try the most. They have only 2 sweet options for pancakes and both are great with the blueberry lillikoi butter being my favorite that I ordered them almost every time we dined there. Menu is a bit pricey and most of our orders were almost 75$-100$ each visit. Coffee being very steeply priced for 8$ in a place that has Starbucks as well right next door. If in the area, I will definitely come here again, there is no item on the menu that you can go wrong with. Also all their sauces and jams are house made so while I absolutely loved their lillikoi butter i couldn't buy that one and I feel so bummed :( read more

Had a great experience at Ulu Kitchen in Maui! We ordered the veggie pot pie and butternut squash quesadillas, and both were amazing. The pot pie stood out -- the puff pastry on top was crisp, fluffy, and perfectly golden, and the flavors hit the spot. For drinks, we tried the Blind Hibiscus, which was refreshing and slightly sweet, along with the Smoke Show and Lilikoi Whiskey Sour -- all delicious and well-balanced. Our friends had the veggie pot pie but wished it had protein. They also ordered the smashed cucumber salad and the macadamia nut fresh fish. Pretty mid. I expect better from merriman's. Came here because I loved the vegan corn chowder when they had it at monkeypod but took it off the menu there. It's still vegan and it's pretty good, but it is quite peppery/spicy as other reviews have mentioned. I remember it being more balanced at monkeypod. When I asked our server about vegan options they were like "oh we're pretty and about that" which is fair. The corn chowder is the only thing labeled on the menu, even though the smashed cucumber salad is vegan by default and so is the focaccia side (both of which I ended up getting). They were good but not particularly interesting and the salad was more just like a side green salad with cucumbers and mangoes, not like the "smashed cucumber" you might find at an Asian restaurant. OH and the broccoli salad appears vegetarian but we were told it actually has shrimp paste in it?? Which is crazy not to mark on a menu bc people have shellfish ALLERGIES. And also I bet vegetarians have gotten it without asking... :( My non-vegan family was similarly underwhelmed, especially for the prices. I think they enjoyed the desserts - the ice cream sandwich and grilled pineapple. Interestingly, the chocolate mochi cake with raspberry sauce sounds like the same one they have at the fancier merriman's but for like $10 cheaper, if you're looking to try it. This restaurant fails to understand how reservations work. They know how to take the reservation, but they fail to hold the reservation. Where holding is the most important part. We had a reservation for 9am... we showed up at 8:55am.... We were told they would work on our table, it would take just a couple minutes. All sounds good. Once 9:20 hit I asked, how's that table coming. We were told just a few more minutes. At 9:32 we were sat amongst many, many open tables. The waiter came over and said sorry didn't realize I was given this table. The food is ok, the food service is ok, the staff isn't great at understanding how to service their customers. I've eaten at Ulu Kitchen in Maui at least four times in the last week, and Amika made such a lasting impression on me tonight that I had to leave a review for her. She is so personable, welcoming, and genuine. From the moment she greets you, her smile lights up the room, and you can just feel that she's a truly good person. She has a way of making you feel so taken care of and comfortable, and that kind of hospitality is rare. I was excited to see that Monkeypod sister's restaurant Ulu Kitchen was taking over Westin's oceanfront spot. I've visited this spot back in the day when it was Tropica and twice when it was Waicoco. Upon arriving in Maui, it worked out that we wanted an early dinner for my husband's birthday due to jet lag. We got the best of both worlds with both happy hour and dinner. From the HH menu we tried almost all the appetizers offered, tako escargot, pork potstickers and veggie quesadillas, paired with a Monkeypod Mai Tai. Those pork potstickers were so good, we ordered a second before hopping over to the dinner menu for an order of Mac Nut crusted Mahi Mahi each. Skip the long lines at Monkeypod for HH and come here instead for those same Monkeypod Mai Tais. We had such a great time, we came back two weeks later for our anniversary brunch before heading to the airport. We shared a sweet, the Monkeypod Mai Tai Flapjack topped with the lilikoi foam from that Mai Tai and a savory, Hawaiian Chilaquiles topped with kalua pork. Delicious takes on some of our favorite foods! Their coconut shrimp was delectably savory, a little spicy and a whirlwind of different flavors all at once! The Coconut Corn Chowder was to die for. I love corn chowder and this version was so fresh but had a wonderful mouth feel with the crisp corn and al dente potatoes but the 'ulu and lemongrass really made all the difference! Walked in and sat at the bar and the bartender didn't greet us, in fact she didn't say anything. My wife asked if they were open and she gave us a look like we were stupid for asking. We wouldn't have asked if we were properly greeted. Wife asked a question and she ignored her, grabbed a menu and set it down and turned back around without saying a word. The whole time with an annoyed look on her face. It's quite possible that we interrupted her social hour with the guy at the bar. You can take your attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine. We made a reservation at Ulu Kitchen to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, hoping for a special evening -- and while parts of it were lovely, it didn't quite hit the mark we were hoping for. We noted our anniversary on the reservation, so we expected at least a small acknowledgment (a congrats card, a reserved marker, maybe a complimentary toast -- like we've experienced at similar spots in Austin). Unfortunately, nothing was mentioned. Ironically, it was the table next to us who ended up making the night feel special -- they overheard our toast to each other and sweetly bought us our first round. As for the food, we shared the octopus, pork potstickers, scallops, oysters, and the surf & turf duo (steak, lobster ravioli, mashed potatoes, and green beans). The highlight of the meal was definitely the lobster ravioli -- absolutely incredible -- and the oysters were also a standout. The main downside came with the steak. We ordered medium, but it arrived more on the rare/medium-rare side. We tried to flag our waiter for about 15 minutes, and when he finally came by, the explanation about possibly microwaving it (!) or maybe getting a new one left us feeling unsure. The steak returned pretty much unchanged, and at that point we just ate around the rarer parts since we were hungry and ready to wrap up. Unfortunately, it still didn't sit well in my stomach afterward, which was a bummer given my sensitivities. Ulu has a beautiful atmosphere and some truly delicious dishes, but the service and special-occasion touches didn't quite meet the expectations we had for a milestone dinner. read more
