This was our 2nd visit to Leilani's - we traveled end of Sept/first of Oct and were able to make same day reservations. They were ready to seat us when we arrived early. All the staff were friendly and happy to greet us. The food was fantastic! Our party of 4 got the Prime Rib with grilled shrimp and lobster tail, both times. Super delicious and came out timely. OH and Hula Pie was superb - 4 people ate on it. We'd asked to sit on the rail because it was sunset - so beautiful. Our server the 2nd visit was Isabelle and she was wonderful!! The only thing i liked was the fish tacos until last week. I mentioned the tortilla looked like a white corn instead of flour. It also tasted like white corn. However, the server assured me it was flour and they were getting them from a local source. Anyway, the fish was like it was cooked the day before then reheated. It was dry and hard. The place is INCREDIBLY noisy to a point of discomfort. The food is mediocre tho' very fresh. Service is very efficient & friendly. The combination seafood plate is very nice with 3 small Pacific lobster tails, 4 Pacific oysters & 4 shrimp, & a small bowl of tuna poke but not enough for 2 people & OK as an appetizer for one. The one outstanding food is a huge slice of Hula Cake, vanilla ice cream covered with milk chocolate on a thick slice of chocolate cookie &, best of all, a massive amount of delicious whipped cream. Mashed potatoes are very good. The regular ribs entree is more traditionally cooked and sauced. We were really looking forward to the Merus Cut Alaskan King Crab Legs but they were all sold out! With a $75 credit burning a hole in my wallet I approached Leilani's, first at their second floor restaurant (Leilani's On The Beach) before heading down to the ground floor (Leilani's Beach Bar). I had a hunch which I'd prefer and followed my intuition. The more casual Beach Bar was the vibe I was feeling and its menu set the right tone. If you've wandered over after a day at the beach and want to keep things simple choose Leilani's Beach Bar. Arrive before sunset and get a seat close to where the live music will be played. As I left I was surprised to note how far other diners were from the music. Some folks prefer this but I wanted to be wrapped up in it; a seat right in front of the 3-piece band was perfect. Also perfect? The sunset view. Yes, it's probably more lovely from their upstairs counterpart, but not so different that I regretted the trade-off. Keeping things simple is a good idea here. To accompany the beer and wine at my table an order of onion rings (excellent) was shared. I enjoyed their version of a Cobb Salad and their hyped Fish Tacos ("Voted Maui's Best" supposedly) were said to be good as well. Drinks, appetizer, salad, tacos, music, sunset... That's the way I'd recommend you do Leilani's Beach Bar. There's plenty of similar places nearby (possibly from the same ownership group) and I've been to Hawaii often enough to have garnered the feeling that they're all a bit similar. I have been craving the hurricane Ahi bowl since I came here in 2024. Where else can you get sushi grade seared tuna, katsu'ed to be crispy, with a delicious sauce? And the best rice with furikake, and then some pretty good macaroni salad? Only here as far as I know? Definitely not where I live in San Diego. The tuna was just as amazing as I remembered. It's easy to walk into the beach bar. And I liked the strawberry salad again, although the strawberries themselves were not that great. The salad is full of fat (nuts, goat cheese, and dressing), but the local lettuce is really good and overall it's a very tasty salad. And you can avoid the fat by getting the dressing on the side and eating around the goat cheese and not eating all the nuts. I was a little disappointed with my 1944 cocktail. It was definitely strong in alcohol content, but the flavor was super muted compared to last time. Decided to order the hula pie because we had a discount card giving us a free one with two entrees, which we had bought anyway. It's a hulking dessert that might be crowd pleasing with a table of kids. It's much too much for one or two people, and not that interesting. I liked the chocolate sauce and the nuts, and that's all I ate. They have this at all of their restaurants, but I wouldn't pay to order it. Made a reservation for the night to be able to enjoy dinner close to our hotel in Kaanapali. Unfortunatley, we should've passed on Leilani's. First off, service was great. Upon check in, we were greeted immediately and notified our table would be ready shortly. After being seated our server (Dara) approached us and took our drinks and food orders promptly. I ordered a local draft beer, it came out warm and pretty flat. We did mention it to staff and they allowed me to select another beer off their menu, which was appreciated. The food... mid, I got the ribs and "huli huli chicken" (if you can even call it that). The chicken was not like any kind of huli huli chicken I've ever had, and should definitely be renamed on the menu. Chicken was a very dry piece of grilled chicken breast, with bbq sauce on top. I took 1 bite of it. The ribs were decent enough, nothing fancy, but not bad either. This place is definitely overpriced, for a slightly better price point I would recommend Monkey Pod, it's worth the wait. read more

I had high hopes for Leilani's based on all the positive reviews I read on Yelp, but unfortunately left pretty disappointed. I started with a Duke's Blonde Ale that came out warm and completely flat. Our waitress (who was awesome throughout the whole meal) replaced it with a much colder one but even that was still a little flat. I just drank it anyway. For food I ordered the $33 (!) rib and chicken plate, specifically because the menu described it as "all natural huli huli chicken." When it came out I was honestly shocked. The chicken looked and tasted more like something cooked from frozen off a Costco shelf than authentic huli huli chicken. When I hear huli huli, I'm expecting darker skin, some char, bark and those deep grilled flavors, none of which were there. The ribs were just okay and somehow a few were dry while others were juicy, although the sauce did taste homemade which was a small plus. Somehow the jicama coleslaw ended up being the highlight of the entire plate. Great texture, good flavor and the cold crunch worked really well against the hot meats. The fries were...fries. For $33, if you're calling it huli huli chicken, I expect actual huli huli chicken. If not, just describe it as "grilled chicken" Our waitress is honestly what saved this from being a 1 star review. She was lovely, removed the first beer from our bill and apologized for something that wasn't even her fault. I wish I had gotten her name. I might give Leilani's another shot, but I'd probably rather wait an hour for a table at Monkeypod across the way. read more

The beach location is on the ground floor where you can hear the ocean but a big hedge obstructs most of the view. We started with drinks. It was one of our first nights in Hawaii for a couple weeks. Prices are expensive but not as expensive as the main restaurant. The menu is bar food with some fresh food choices. Looking to relax and kill some time, my husband and I made our way to Leilani's on the Beach during happy hour. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful view of the ocean. Our server was extremely kind and attentive without being pushy. We decided to start with an order of the calamari; it was tender and breaded to perfection. My husband ordered a local draft beer and I ordered a refreshing smoothie, served in a fresh pineapple cup. I will say, when the bill arrived and I saw that it was a $10 up charge for the pineapple cup, I probably would not order it that way again but when you're on vacation, you order silly things. The ribs and chicken were both dry. The piece of chicken was so thin and was drowning in sauce to cover it up how dry it was The fries were crispy and good. My kids had the chicken tenders. We visited the dining room of Leilan's twice on our trip to Maui last week. Both times I had the parmesan crusted fresh catch and it was absolutely delicious! Although the food was a decent portion, I could have eaten more only because it was so good. My husband had the chicken and ribs plate both times. He was able to use his fork to eat the ribs, did not have to pull the meat off of the bones. He said this was his favorite meal of the trip. Our waiter was Craig and he provided us a little bit of beach history that we found very helpful and useful. He was an attentive waiter also. We sat upstairs in the dining room and the views are second to none, even though we did not have a table directly facing the sunset, we could still see it and enjoy the sunset while we ate our dinner. Probably our best meal in Maui for the past week! We secured a late reservation for Leilani's for our party of nine. The service was prompt and our appetizers came out pretty quickly. We had the coconut shrimp and the poke with plantain chips. Both were devoured in a matter of minutes. Our entrées were also great. I think the table favorite was the shrimp pasta. The cream sauce was not too heavy, and the texture of the pasta was firm on the inside yet soft. Everyone at the table who tasted it, loved it. Oh and the hoopa pie was fantastic! This little beach bar was so convenient. It is right next to the beach in whalers village. We came in from the beach and checked out their happy hour. The patio was packed. The happy hour food was tasty. We ordered the coconut chicken skewers the sauce was delicious. The shrimp were crispy . The vegetable dip with flatbread was a bit flavorless and the lettuce wraps were tasty. The food was extremely small portions. I would recommend skip the happy hour and get real entrees - we all ended up hungry an hour later needing snacks. The drinks were watered down - mine was the Kimos Grog its was not very good at all.
