Sashimi combo
Karen E.

The restaurant in ambience are very minimalistic, which I find very calming. The menu has many options, but not too many. We got the miso soup, spider maki, and the sashimi combo. All of these items were delicious. The service is great. They have many sakes to choose from as well as a decent wine list.

Really great sushi quality but 4 maki's, a rainbow roll and a miso soup for $100 is insane. I really enjoyed the sake maki and the hamachi maki but the rainbow roll and miso soup was a miss. This did not fill two people. Interior and ordering was straightforward. The concept and pricing is sugarfish levels of craziness which I am not feeling. For sushi I recommend going to miso phat, a drive up but the omakase is with trying.

12 pc Chef's Choice Sushi Set

We passed by this spot dozens of time during our trip so I finally got a takeout sushi bento on my way to the airport. I was hoping to find a hidden gem, but alas it was a HUGE disappointment. I got a sushi combination to go, which is an omakase (literally Chef's choice). But, we were sorely disappoint that the omakase had several repeats and lacked in variety. (2 tunas, 2 salmon, 2 yellowtail, shrimp, mackerel, octopus, tamago, scallops, and a white fish of some kind). The octopus did not taste fresh, the mackerel texture was off, and the mysterious white fish was chewy. What kind of 12 piece omakase only includes 9 different kinds of fish! The rice was falling apart and there also was no guide as to what we were eating. Our side of spicy tuna crispy rice was not crispy at all, but I will chalk that up to being a takeout order. At $65 for the nigiri and $14 for the crispy rice, I would not come here ever again. I am not sure if they were having an off day or something, but my omakase box does not look remotely like others I've seen posted on their page. What a huge let down - the chef's choices on that day were awful.

I booked the chef's omakase experience not sure how it would be. The Beau said that it was the best sushi he's had. The restaurant is small with about four tables and a take out window. Only the omakase is available by reservation and is located at a seven seat counter inside. You arrive at 6pm and the service starts promptly. A sake pairing is available with hefty pours of about 8oz total. The omakase is the presented in several courses in a traditional style with the chef giving explanations about each. Most of the ingredients are from Japan. We had: - Sunomono with snow crab - Chawanamushi - Tempura - Miso black cod and shishito pepper - Hirame nigiri - Shima Aji nigiri - Scallop nigiri - Kauai shrimp nigiri - Fried shrimp head - Seared black throat sea perch nigiri - Otoro nigiri - Local big eye tuna nigiri - Miso soup - Warabimochi Additional items are available for an extra charge at the end. We tried the toro tempura. All of it was absolutely incredible and delicious. The rice was from Hokkaido and like nothing I've had before. The wasabi root was imported from Japan and grated fresh at the bar. It was floral and fruity and nothing like the neon green horseradish often served. The chef was delightful. He explained how he was in Hawaii because he loved surfing (and why he's so tan.) He used to live in San Diego and likes In N Out. Overall, it was about 14 courses over two hours. It was expensive but far above the normal resort experience. I highly recommend it.

This place is a gem! Inside they have an amazing omakase option. I'd definitely make a reservation if you're interested in that. We went with à la carte this time and the sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious. We sat outside and loved it. There was a nice breeze, plus they have a fan which helps with the heat. There are only a few tables outside though, so I'd check ahead if that's where you want to sit. Highly recommend for great sushi and a chill atmosphere!

California rolls (we added tobiko) and soft shell crab rolls

Hands down the best sushi we've had! They know what they're doing! Thank you for an amazing sushi experience! Taste and presentation were on point! We got our's to go and ate on our oceanfront lanai. Perfect dinner, perfect company and perfect view! Grateful and blessed!

Soft shell crab roll - $19

Tiny but lovely sushi restaurant near the resorts that offers omakase option (need to prebook) a few days a week, but since we didn't prebook, we just ordered off their regular menu. The inside area has 1 table plus the omakase counter, and the patio area had a few tables, so there might be a wait if they're full. The staff member was super nice and friendly, and chatted with us every time she delivered something to our table. They also have a takeout window if there's no space to dine-in. Based on the pictures, that also seems like a legit option. We ordered a few rolls to share, and each got a 12pc sushi combo set. To be honest, the sushi combo set was plenty for 1 person, so the extra rolls we got were completely unnecessary. However, the soft shell crab roll was definitely worth getting. We were happy that the waitress had to take a second to think about which fish they had in the fridge that day and thus, would be receiving in the combo set - as that indicated how fresh it was. The portion size on each nigiri was excellent, alongside a generous portion of sushi rice, so well worth the price. Highly recommend it, we enjoyed all the nigiri that came in the combo, but I particularly loved the scallop and the salmon (super fatty). Super happy we found this place on a whim while we were visiting. Highly recommend it! We would love to come back and try their omakase option (we got to watch since we snagged the 1 indoor table) and it was drool-worthy.

We are pumped to have such an amazing sushi restaurant on the Westside! I've been stalking this restaurant since last year when I saw their sign and was so glad to see they were open when we came back this year. Everything is super fresh and rivals some of our favorite sushi spots on the mainland. Service was lovely, we ordered the following: Edamame Eel avocado roll Lobster tempura roll - our fav, so damn good Rainbow roll King Salmon sashimi - 4 pcs Omakase nigiri + negihama roll Everything was so fresh and on par with Maui sushi prices. Highly recommend for the gorgeous restaurant, service and quality.

We didn't get a chance today to sit at the restaurant for our meal(s), but we definitely did come twice for lunch and dinner take out! Their quality of fish is great and their fish to rice ratio is on point! We ordered the Combination sushi, tuna set and the salmon set. They were all very good and were prepared within a reasonable time!! Glad to have found this gem! It's just as good as Miso phat, maybe better in some ways as well!

Meh presentation on this one
CJ J.

Very expensive omakase for what you get. The service is excellent, presentation of food was beautiful and the chef is very nice. However, the amount of food is very small and the desert was a sad unimpressive ice cream. The drinks don't come with the omakase meal which is so ridiculous since it's already so overpriced. Of it's the only place for this type of experience on the island, then I guess I can understand the pricing... but it's not worth it if you've had better. And cheaper omakase elsewhere. Next time I'll try their regular menu.

Located in the fairway shops. Great sushi with a really great atmosphere. Omakase is definitely the specialty here but we went and took a shot one night to just show up. The inside was all booked and reserved for omakase only. We were fortunate to be able to get the last of two tables available for the patio. Us being a party of 4 the other was a party of 8 so it is not a very large space. They do offer take out. Food we had was great. Excellent quality but the sushi had a lot of rice. Highly recommend the hamachi carpaccio and salmon special were or favorites. Service was excellent! Give them a try if sushi is your thing. Note if you're not into sushi there is no other cooked options.

Midori Roll
Mindy P.

Five enthusiastic stars for this gem of a sushi place! Just about a half mile up the street through the golf course from the resorts, it's absolutely worth placing an order for pickup to watch the sunset. First, just LOOK at those to-go boxes! I almost want o clean them and use them for something. We ordered the Midori Roll and two orders of crispy rice (tuna). Note--the crispy rice is substantial! Oh man, I can say this is our last day on Maui and with the exception of 6 ounces of exceptional ahi at Ulu Kitchen, this was the FRESHEST fish we've eaten. So grade A delicious! The crispy rice went out of its way to be generous and flavorful. The Midori Roll was fresh and clean. You've got to try this place!

Chirashi bowl

Went for lunch. Got there at 12:15. No wait. Very clean and serene space with limited seating. The dining room has one table for four persons and six seats at the sushi bar. The outside seating has enough seats for 8 people. Service: very sweet and friendly. Food: we ordered: hamachi carpaccio. Very fresh fish, subtle yuzu soy with olive oil. Not the best hamachi carpaccio I've had but it was still very good. Chirashi: fish was very fresh and the rice was cooked and seasoned just right. It had a generous amount of fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, and red snapper) tamago (flavorful) and very delicious ikura that had the perfect amount of sweetness without being overly salty. The only negative about the chirashi bowl was that the fish were cut in small pieces as if they were "leftovers or rejects". Clearly they were not because they tasted very fresh. This was the first time I've had fish chopped small in a chirashi bowl. Otherwise we enjoyed our meal. Would like to try the omakase next time.

We decided to hit the road and find it. Lucky we did! It was open, there was no line. It had a great assortment of rolls and a good number of options for nigiri. We got 4-5 rolls and some nigiri and a poke bowl. It was all freshly made, perfectly rolled and came out at the time told to us, about 15 minutes. We ate it in the car- we didn't notice the ants in the table until after we sat down to wait for about 10 minutes. I followed them on instagram and they posted our order. So cool! We stopped by on a Monday night around 7:30 pm after doing the road to Hana. They had some Whitney Houston and Shakira bumpin, some cute garden lights, and three outdoor picnic tables for diners. We ordered and had to fill up on gas, so we picked up some drinks from the nearby gas station and got back to wait for the food. The server said it would take about 15 minutes, and I think that was pretty accurate. We ended up ordering the following: Salmon Nigiri - 3/5 this was a little bit more salty than I normally expect of my nigiri. Spicy California Roll - 5/5 tasted like a fresh California roll with some spicy mayo on it. It wasn't very spicy though? Mild enough for the non-spice lovers. Tempura Roll - 5/5 this was probably my favorite roll. It was simple yet delicious. You can't ever go wrong with unagi sauce. Smash Roll - 4/5 the smash roll was really good. It had a good, well-rounded taste with the tuna and salmon. This was my husband's favorite roll. If you're feeling like you need some good Asian-American sushi, check out Smash Maui! It's going to hit!

We ordered the Unagi Roll ($29), Shaking Beef Noodles ($48), and the Kanpachi Kama ($37), which wasn't actually on the menu. They had run out of the Hamachi Kama (I overheard they only get about 3-5 per day), so they offered Kanpachi instead -- and it ended up being a great choice. While the prices are definitely on the higher side, that's expected at a five-star resort in Maui. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was stunning, and the food was delicious all around. For the views, quality, and overall experience, it was absolutely worth it. I'd recommend Japengo to anyone visiting Maui!

There was a line of people trying to make reservations also so book before or earlier. We arrived a few minutes early for the reservation and our table was ready. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought. Large covered dining area plus the dining on the newly renovated and extra large deck over looking the pool. Evening time was dark inside but the table lights were bright enough at the table and added the nice ambiance. Our server was so friendly and patient and I saw that she was on top of every request and order from all the tables in her section. Amazing skills! We ordered the white lotus mocktail, a OJ, kids Mac and cheese, curry dusted calamari, Korean seafood pancakes, pork belly bao, Rainbow and Shrimp Tempura rolls, and the blackened tuna roll. The dishes and sushi rolls are generous portions and we didn't understand or were starving. We ordered too much for the table. Even the kids Mac and cheese came in this huge bowl enough for two kids. All the sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. They were topped with this wasabi tobiko. I've never had anything like that, and I wished I had more to top other dishes. The Korea seafood pancakes were really crispy on the outside and light and doughy on the inside with the seafood. The sauce on top was great. If they had called this seafood hush puppies, I would have been happy with the order. Each piece was ginormous but didn't have much green onions. I was expecting the pancakes to have a lot more green onions. The pork belly bao buns had a nice pickled salad on top. The buns were not very fluffy but serviceable. The dish was ok. The curry dusted calamari was also just ok. Calamari was fried well and crispy. The curry dust was just not the flavor we liked. And it came with these grape halves around which didn't really go well with the calamari or flavor in my opinion. I think if we ever come back, we'll stick with the sushi menu.
