We don't like mustard but this has just a hint of it. We ordered a few sushi rolls. There is not alot of choices for rolls but the ones we had were nice. Tasted fresh. Decent sizes. A tried and true resort-style staple of Kaanapali. I've been here every time I've visited and haven't been disappointed. I do miss some of the more varied menu items of years back (they used to have much larger omekase style platter) but the quality remains at the top. Dining on the terrace at sunset is a must. The views and the weather are otherworldly (I overheard another table describe it as "looks like AI"). I assure you it's real. Our server Misti was wonderful, as was Delfino. The sashimi was immaculate and the rolls all had the right combos. My one complaint (but not one worth a star deduction) is that that Hokkaido Old Fashioned came with normal ice... at this kind of establishment and for the price, a single large rock should be standard. read more

Japengo is located inside the Hyatt resort and was an easy, short walk from our stay at the Westin. The outdoor patio alone is worth the visit -- the view is absolutely breathtaking, especially around sunset. We ordered the Unagi Roll ($29), Shaking Beef Noodles ($48), and the Kanpachi Kama ($37), which wasn't actually on the menu. They had run out of the Hamachi Kama (I overheard they only get about 3-5 per day), so they offered Kanpachi instead -- and it ended up being a great choice. While the prices are definitely on the higher side, that's expected at a five-star resort in Maui. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was stunning, and the food was delicious all around. For the views, quality, and overall experience, it was absolutely worth it. I'd recommend Japengo to anyone visiting Maui! read more

We showed up an hour before our reservation to have a couple cocktails at the bar, all was going great until another couple showed up wanting to have dinner at the bar and the bartenders tried their best to get us to leave for what I guess they expected to be a higher ticket. They even had the hostess approach us and ask if we'd checked in. 20 minutes before our reservation, so we had not. She told us a table would be ready soon. All too weird. At our scheduled time, we were called and taken to a table. We got a great spot and excellent service from Carrie. As others have nentioned, prices are pretty high, but quality was very good. Curry Dusted Calamari was super tasty but were really tiny pieces. Otoro Sashimi was excellent. Swordfish was very good, but plating was pretty bland. Still, a good dish. All in all, it was a good meal. I wish they hadn't made it so weird at the bar, but I'd go back. read more

We made reservations here for the last night of our 10 day stay in Maui. The hotel/resort is beautiful, and we had great experiences at the other restaurants and bars on this property, so we were very much looking forward to dinner at Japengo. Sadly, we were pretty disappointed. The views and ambiance were wonderful, but the food was lacking, and our waitress was lackadaisical at best. The bao buns were tasty but the fried rice was super greasy and barely had any chicken in it, and the sushi rolls were ridiculously thick, which made them hard to eat (and I am a huge sushi fan!). The sushi rolls also didn't really have much taste to them. We ended up with 3 orders of the Japengo fried rice that were barely touched and the waitress didn't think to ask if something was wrong. For the price of this restaurant and the numerous other great options all within walking distance of the Hyatt, I'd pass on this. 5 out of 10 at best. read more

Food seems to be hit or miss here. Very pricey with mediocre or bland flavors for many of the dishes, including the calamari, beef noddles, edamame, sushi, carrots, and Mac n cheese. Shrimp, lobster, and hamachi kama were good. View is gorgeous obviously since it overlooks the water. However, not enough lighting at night. I could barely see my food and needed to use my phones light. The little table lights they have weren't enough. Most of our food didn't take long to come out but two items took a long time, which should have been the easier ones (lobster tail and grilled fish which both cook fast). A couple of thoughts: - Sushi was good, fresh and tastes great - Dessert was epic and would recommend - we were seated at two separate tables which lead to different kitchen timing for Adults vs Kids table - Service was not great.. 2-3 stars at best. Really nice dinner spot in the Hyatt Regency. The oceanfront views are beautiful and the vibes are set with the dim lighting and chic décor. We started with some salads that were deliciously fresh and opened up the appetite. My bf and I split the 5 piece omakase, 2 rolls, and the garlic noodles. We were surprised by how full we ended up leaving, the rolls here are ginormous! Even though they are a staggering $30 a roll, I did feel like the size of them justified the price. Of course all the fish was super fresh and buttery, and every piece of the omakase was delicious. The chu-toro was a standout, it was really melt-in-your-mouth and rich. Other orders at the table included the shaking beef noodles and the special fish of the day, which all got great reviews too. We had a delicious bottle of sake to wash everything down, and ended the night with the ginger crème brulee. We really got to enjoy dinner and weren't rushed at all, I think we got to enjoy a good 2 hours of great conversation and food. It's definitely a splurge to come here but I think the quality and vibes make it all worth it! read more

I stayed at the resort and stopped by for a quick bite and drink. I didn't make a reservation and was seated at the bar. The ambiance was very intimate and beautiful views. Service was excellent, my server super attentive and fast. I tried the Ube Sour, a gin-based cocktail that was strong but balanced with the sweet ube. The fish was fresh, which I appreciated. However, the poke block missed the mark for me. The rice was hard and fell apart easily, and the poke itself didn't feel authentic. For the small portion, the price didn't feel justified. Japengo is at the Hyatt Regency Maui and located at the lobby level and overlooks the hotel pools. We made same day reservations and was able to get a table for 4 later in the evening on a Wednesday. There was a line of people trying to make reservations also so book before or earlier. We arrived a few minutes early for the reservation and our table was ready. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought. Large covered dining area plus the dining on the newly renovated and extra large deck over looking the pool. Evening time was dark inside but the table lights were bright enough at the table and added the nice ambiance. Our server was so friendly and patient and I saw that she was on top of every request and order from all the tables in her section. Amazing skills! We ordered the white lotus mocktail, a OJ, kids Mac and cheese, curry dusted calamari, Korean seafood pancakes, pork belly bao, Rainbow and Shrimp Tempura rolls, and the blackened tuna roll. The dishes and sushi rolls are generous portions and we didn't understand or were starving. We ordered too much for the table. Even the kids Mac and cheese came in this huge bowl enough for two kids. All the sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. They were topped with this wasabi tobiko. I've never had anything like that, and I wished I had more to top other dishes. The Korea seafood pancakes were really crispy on the outside and light and doughy on the inside with the seafood. The sauce on top was great. If they had called this seafood hush puppies, I would have been happy with the order. Each piece was ginormous but didn't have much green onions. I was expecting the pancakes to have a lot more green onions. The pork belly bao buns had a nice pickled salad on top. The buns were not very fluffy but serviceable. The dish was ok. The curry dusted calamari was also just ok. Calamari was fried well and crispy. The curry dust was just not the flavor we liked. And it came with these grape halves around which didn't really go well with the calamari or flavor in my opinion. I think if we ever come back, we'll stick with the sushi menu. read more

We started with bao buns and then a salad. Both were great but the salad was delicious. Followed that with the surf and turf roll and the Kaanapoli roll. I regret to write this with such low rating, but we feel it is fair. To start, we had reservations for 8pm and were seated at 8:10 which was fine. However, we were seated inside with no view whatsoever, despite having multiple tables with a view. Maybe short staffing? Either way, waiter took our drink order promptly, but forgot our appetizer. The food took 40 minutes to arrive, and was very bland. The fried rice was a portion big enough for 4, which is normally fine, but not in this case. Water tasted like chlorine, honestly. The meal was way overpriced, but that is to be expected at a resort in Maui, however a California Roll being $24....?? Anyway, I do not recommend and it was the low point of our vacation food wise. I recommend to not waste your money or time, especially with all of the other yummy food places (and food trucks!!) in Maui. read more

Hands down, Japengo was our favorite meal of the entire trip -- and it just so happened to be our last night on the island, which made it all the more special. We saw online that there weren't any reservations available, so we called to check on walk-in options. The hostess was super helpful and let us know they had bar seating open -- and it ended up working out perfectly. For drinks, we tried the 1944 Mai Tai, Ube Sour, and an Old Fashioned. The standout? The Ube Sour. Easily our favorite drink of the whole weekend -- beautifully balanced and unique. Now for the food -- we went all out and ordered the Korean Seafood Pancake, Cajun Seared Hamachi Sashimi, Omakase Sushi, Aburi Nigiri Trio, Rainbow Roll, and Hotategai (Scallops). Every bite was fresh and full of flavor, but the Korean Seafood Pancake absolutely stole the show. I'll be craving it long after we've left. Lucky enough to enjoy head sushi chef Masa omikase dinner experience tonite! And what an experience it was oh my! Began with truffle vichyssoise with sea urchin. Appetizer plate was oyster, octopus, monk liver, salmon belly, blue fin. Followed by blue fin tuna toro and kampachi sashimi. Then a delicate and beautiful chawanmishi egg custard with scallop and shrimp and ikura roe. Then lobster with Pohole fern. Next up was miso butterfish with egg omelet. Then the nigiri! First the most decadent wagyu beef torched to perfection with uni on top! Next was blue fin tuna and big eye tuna from Japan. Golden eye snapper torched lighting and giant clam nigiri and sweet raw amoebi shrimp to end the nigiri. A beautiful negitoro hand roll and beautiful clam miso soup to end the astounding meal! In case we weren't full a beautiful dessert platter by the dessert chef consisted of the house macadamia ice cream fudge pie, a mango cheesecake, a fudge pie and a matcha cookie! From the valet attendants to the concierge, the front desk (special thanks to Felma), the restaurant host, and the iconic staff at the "Circle" bar (Jen, Chris B., Mick, and Chris A.), we were always warmly greeted and taken care of. When you combine the freshest seafood with the perfect ambience, music, and design, you're truly in paradise in Maui. Japengo ended up being my favorite restaurant I visited during my time in Maui. The ambiance, the view, and the food were all outstanding. I was served by Jen, who was incredibly kind, attentive, and made the entire experience feel special from start to finish. To start, I ordered the Bang Bang crab dip, which was absolutely phenomenal, along with a Birds of Paradise cocktail. Both were a fantastic way to begin the meal. For my main course, I had the uni nigiri and the Cajun seared hamachi sashimi. The uni was wonderfully sweet and melted in my mouth, pairing perfectly with the rice and seaweed in the nigiri. The Cajun seared hamachi sashimi was equally delightful -- beautifully presented and full of flavor. Dessert was difficult to choose because everything sounded amazing, but I ultimately went with the ginger crème brûlée served with lemon cream and anise cookies. It was the perfect ending to the meal, and I finished every bite completely satisfied. The cuisine here is exceptional, especially if you enjoy pan-Asian flavors like I do. Combined with the absolutely gorgeous ocean view, Japengo offers an unforgettable dining experience. Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Maui. read more

Do not eat here. The food is horrible and the service is not there. Shaking beef was so dry the beef bounced off my teeth when I tried to bite down. Sushi tasted like rubber and tasted very old. The rice of the sushi was not even good, how do you mess that up? Price is very high for the worst food I have had on Maui. The Hyatt is not known for good food and this new expansion as nice as it looks was not worth the horrible quality of the food. They need better chefs or to fire the company they source the seafood from. Would never recommend as even a simple order of whisky on the rocks was watered down where it looked like it was just water. Atleast it tasted like it had whisky but just super watered down. They need an overhaul at Japengo as I don't know how they survive currently. read more

We've been to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa several times (one of our favorite places). We hadn't dined at Japengo so this time decided to have try it. We were not disappointed. We had an amazing and breathtaking view overlooking the ocean. The food was delicious. The garlic noodles are a must. We had a vegetarian roll - also delicious and well-prepared. We also tried the filet mignon - cooked just right. Everything was so tasty. I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the service. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. Beautiful view, would've been a divine sunset had we arrived earlier. We're going to try calamari at every restaurant we visit - the calamari here was probably 3.5* it was yummy and unique but not warm?? Not sure if that's the intention. We had two rolls and they were good, but not $35 good - and we live in AZ so fresh sushi in Maui should blow outs out of the water (but didn't). The ambiance of the restaurant was great with dim lighting and beautiful views, and the portions quite large--the nigiri included. I had the 5 nigiri omakase and uni nigiri for my main, and the uni was fantastic. And the spicy edamame was probably my favorite of the dishes we ordered. It was very well prepared compared to prior nigiri I've had. Now, the reason for the 2 star review? The service. For a ~$300 meal, the service was near rock bottom. 1. The miso soup that was ordered was never provided. Then to make matters worse, after it was cancelled (as everything else had already arrived), it still ended up on the check. 2. The pacing. The starters arrived at the same time as the main dishes. There was no pause between. And our table ended up quite full, and having to rush between cold sushi and hot dishes. 3. We didn't get soy sauce. My husband asked the waitress for soy sauce and she said she'll get it. She left and returned and proceeded to give soy sauce to the guy across from us. Much to both his and our confusion. Then she left and got us soy sauce. 4. Being rushed. There was an overall sense of being rushed. I left to go to the bathroom half way into my food and came back to a table with the food all boxed up. We were there less than an hour. 5. "The boxes are behind me." -- My husband explained what occurred while I was gone. The waitress came by and asked if I was coming back to finish my food or if I was done. He replied I'll be back. Her response was "Would you like the rest of the food boxed up?" He replied sure. And she replied by pointing behind her "The boxes are behind me." That completely confused my husband. Did she expect him to go get the boxes himself and box his food? Luckily the second male older server came by and boxed up the food for him. 6. It wasn't just us. I noticed her bring something to the couple beside us and them being confused and telling her they didn't order it. That couple appeared rushed as well. We left a 15% tip which is low for us. Would have been 10% but didn't want to stiff the older waiter that was doing his job well and we weren't sure how the tips were being split. 7. Side note: when she arrived she asked if we wanted any hot tea. We already had tea on the table that the older waiter brought. If she just looked at our table she would have seen it. Ultimately the food was good, but the service was so abysmal we're not going back. I couldn't even enjoy my food. And thus we wouldn't recommend it. read more
