They have a wide variety of dog foods, including raw meat dog food (It was interesting talking to the guy behind the counter regarding raw meat as food for dogs.). The food is a bit on the expensive side but the food is good quality and your beloved friend won't get cancer because of the junk he's being made to eat. The staff may not always friendly, agreed, but they do know what they are talking about and are contributing to the health of dogs and cats in Austin. read more

Love love love this place. The guys are super helpful and are always giving my pup treats. They help me find everything I need and are always offering me some pup related advice. I've read the negative reviews and I'm kind of surprised. I talk to these guys and they seriously know their stuff. They love animals and are always happy to address my concerns. The only thing I can guess is they caught someone on a bad day... Go to Bark and Purr!!! You won't regret it. read more

I've been coming here for about 5 years and will admit that the place has its ups and downs with customer service, grooming, or whatever. But the bottom line is they carry stuff that no one else does, they keep a clean/organized shop, and they don't carry garbage. (like the chains) I will admit their prices to be a tad high, but I put price on being able to get in and out in 60 seconds- and not be ask to joined some frickin' frequent buyer's club. And to the reviewers looking for some solid advice on food/supplements- not everyone there will be an expert on every animal so do some independent research and see what makes sense for your "kids" and your budget. read more

Stellar customer service. I had purchased a bag of dog food that i realized was expired when I got home. The next day I brought it back, and they gladly exchanged it for a replacement. Sure it was something that could have been prevented, but it was just overlooked, on their stocking part, as well as my buying and checking date part. It was just a hassle free experience I had to yelp it. Hehe I love the gourmet cookies I always end up buying for my fur babies, as well as the raw bones I give my english setter as a treat for baths. Dogs love it. I love it :) read more

I LOVE Bark 'N Purr! They have a fantastic selection of high-quality food, unique (cool and well-manufactured) toys, and pretty much anything your pet could need. I love going into the store and shopping around for my pups (you just have to BE THERE to pick out the best toys)... and I've found some toys that take my heavy-chewing beagle/terrier several weeks to rip to pieces (woohoo!). What keeps me coming back to Bark 'N Purr is the free delivery on pet food. You simply cannot beat that! They used to offer next-day delivery to anywhere in Austin (which was ridiculously generous) but have switched to a more logical "zoning" method where they deliver to different areas on different days of the week. I always buy food way before I run out anyway, so it didn't really make a difference to me. I'm assuming they did this to reduce costs, and I'm glad they went with this approach rather than cutting the program entirely. I'm docking it down one star because their prices are not the lowest I have found. I don't mind paying more to support a local store (rather than shopping online or buying at a national chain), but to each his own! Also, when you consider that you can have free delivery, the prices don't seem so bad after all... read more

I used to shop at another local pet supply store, until I realized their price for my dogs' food (even AFTER using their loyalty membership discount) was STILL higher than Bark N Purr's normal list price for that particular food. That alone made me switch to Bark N Purr. THEN I found out about their subscription service + free home delivery, which was absolutely the cherry on top. Now, not only am I paying less for my dogs' food, I don't even have to think about fitting a trip to the pet supply store into my schedule. As soon as the bag starts running low, a new package of food appears on my doorstep. It's really nice to see a small business get on board with new technology and take advantage of ecommerce tools like online shopping and subscriptions. It definitely sets them apart! read more

This is an incredible little pet store! I came here on a quest to find some quality cat food for my very picky kitties. As soon as I started looking, an employee asked if she could help and told me all the details about the various brands. She was very knowledgeable and made several great recommendations (without being pushy at all). I recommend this shop for high quality pet supplies, especially if you'd like some help shopping. read more

Our dogs are allergic to grain - ALL of it, including rice. When making raw food got to be too much, this pet store saved us. Bark 'N Purr is the only place in town where I have a selection of different dog foods that they're not allergic to. Yeah, these foods are more than cheap dog food from the chain store. The prices on the same stuff is higher or the same at every single other place in town I've looked. The staff is always nice enough to carry my big bags of food out to the car. One thing they do that is especially fantastic? DELIVER. Free delivery all over town! Stuck at work? Kids going nuts? Everything you need, right to your door! And they were able to recommend the only toys my super destructive chewer couldn't destroy. Squeaky toys that last for months and food for animals with special needs make them my hometown hero. read more

Love the store came in to get pest control for the yard that's natural and works great. We us the Nematodes and they eat the ants and all the bugs that have the exoskeleton. We spray twice a year and it is great no ants and or fleas they are kept under control and able to walk barefoot now. Glad you all keep them in stock this is the only place I can find them. read more

I love this place, and so does Chuy! They have a great selection of healthy dog foods and treats. Plus, the staff is fantastic about helping - I had a problem with my dog not liking pretty much any healthy-for-her dog food for a while. They definitely worked with me to pick out a dog food that she actually liked... so much that we went a bit overboard at first and may have gotten her a little fat. All fixed now, though. Thanks Bark n Purr - gotta' love the great local businesses in Austin! read more

I'm a longtime customer, and just love this place. We've used their local delivery for years, for all of our food and litter needs. After our senior dog passed away last year, we'd been without a dog...until some irresponsible idiot dumped a puppy a few weeks ago. So, we have a puppy, and were woefully unprepared for the new addition. I stopped by Bark 'n Purr for some essentials, and the staff was SO helpful. They recognized the slightly-glazed New Puppy Exhaustion, and when I asked for, "the stuff you spray on cords so they doesn't get electrocuted," they showed me to the bitter spray, and were able to suggest a bunch of other teething toys and products. Bully Sticks are expensive, but they are long-lasting, and MAGIC for occupying the tiny needle teeth of Marcia, our Lab/drunken baby shark mix. read more

I had gone to Bark and Purr, now Hollywood Feed for years.I particularly loved their free delivery of my puppy's dog food.I just found out that they now have a policy that you can't get the delivery free unless you sign up for an automatic delivery program for the food.I also noticed that the last time I was in there, all the friendly staffers I knew seemed to have disappeared.I had asked the man at the counter about grain free versus grain controversy, and he rudely exclaimed in a loud voice,"Oh no, not that question again!"Very embarrassing.Tomlison's will be my go to place from now on, even though Hollywood Feed is closer. What a shame to loose a wonderful, friendly neighborhood store. read more

I can't get enough of this place, I just wish I lived closer - oh wait, not to fear, they DELIVER! What I have to say I was MOST impressed by when I came to this store was the amount of knowledge that *EVERY* member of staff had about everything.. Usually you go into a pet store & they know where things are but have no opinion or knowledge of the product or which is best. I've been to places and explained I need a food without ANY chicken or grain in it and they lead me to a food with chicken fat, etc. etc. Those type of situations will make me leave a store. Bark 'N Purr goes above and beyond to be knowledgable about everything they carry and to find what is best for your pet. I couldn't be happier. Be sure to take the time to stop by and visit them, with your pup, they have great samples for them to try and great people for you both to meet! read more

I special order my food from here every month. for some reason they can't ever seem to get my food or know if it's coming or any of that. way easier to go with a chain as sad as it is to say read more

The staff here know so much about pet food, it's like having a free consultation with an animal nutritionist every time you shop. They hold manufacturers to extremely high nutritional standards and will not sell anything that falls below the bar, so you know that anything you buy here is good for your pet. Their staff can tell you the really important nutritional facts about a product -- the ones that don't get printed on the bag, like the percentage of protein derived from meat. To give you an example, at one point they did not carry the Blue Buffalo dry food with those herbal bits in it -- I think they called them "Lifesource" bits or something like that. I asked the guy behind the counter why, and he said that Blue Buffalo could not guarantee the exact percentage of those bits in each bag, so Bark 'N Purr decided that if a particular bag contained too many of the herbal bits, it would not contain enough protein. That's the kind of thought they put into what they sell. I once emailed the store to ask about brands they *don't* carry, and a staff member researched those brands and emailed me back with his assessment. That just blew me away. One criticism: They never seem to hold adoption events, like Tomlinson's, Petco and Petsmart do, and they don't have animals up for adoption in the store. I wish they'd do that. But as far as product quality and knowledgeable staff go, this is the best pet store I've ever seen. read more

I used to think this was one of the best pet supply shops in town. Then, I had a problem and found out that a lot of claims they make don't hold water when you need them to. I have bought Fromm's dry cat food and dog food from them for years. They always say, if there's any issue with their products, just bring them back and they'll replace, or refund, and I never had an issue to test that claim; until I did. My cats always ate the Fromm's Surf and Turf like it was their last supper until, one day they didn't. They simply stopped eating it, to the point that they would go hungry before touching that food again. I assumed that maybe it had gone rancid, or something, but I had quite a lot of it left (I buy 15 lb. bags and keep it in an air tight container). So, I took the remainder back to the store, hoping to trade it in for another flavor of Fromm's. No dice! Even though I have an account there that tracks my purchases and that food showed up in my history, the manager said that they couldn't do anything about replacing it. That's fine, there's another store down the street, Tomlinson's, that offers similar foods and supplies (including Fromm's products). That's my new go to store. You'd think years of being a regular customer for all my dog's and cat's need would amount to something. Perhaps not. read more

Jupiter and I are always excited to come here! When I walk in, the manager always recognizes me and my pup (Even though we only come in about once a month to stock up). I had problems for months finding a food that fully worked for my dog's stomach and the manager (I wish I remembered her name for a shout out..) never gave up on trying to help us. After a few recommendations, we finally found a food that works for her and she suggested a great bone broth that always settles her stomach. Every recommendation she has made for treats and toys has always been a success and every time I'm here I spend a bit too much because I just love it all! read more

I came here based on online reviews by other Great Dane owners whose dogs have digestive problems. They recommended a dog food with duck protein, since Danes traditionally do better avoiding beef and chicken protein. After starting that food, my Dane's digestion has improved drastically. Even the food my vet recommended didn't help this much! The employees are knowledgeable and very friendly, and always offer to carry my huge bag to my car for me. I love that the rewards program actually gives you money off your purchases! read more

1. The service is remarkable. They are knowledgeable & friendly. 2. They have a great supply (organic, ethically-sourced, locally-sourced, all sorts of varieties of food, leashes, toys, etc.) 3. They DELIVER! 4. They're expensive, but local & they reward consistent customers (in other words, I think the price is worth it for all of the above). 5. They did mess up my delivery once recently, but I emailed them the same day, & they delivered the missing item same day with clear email communication. All good :) read more

I love this store! They have the largest selection of raw diet needs for your pets. No one can beat them. If there are other stores out there that carry half as much I would be surprised. I don't get most of the reviews here complaining about not being chased around the store by aggressive employees. I would have to bet that if they did come and chase you down asking if you needed assistance you all would complain about being harassed! Instead the employees have trust in you that you won't steal from their store and they allow us to shop in peace. If you do have any questions then you are more than welcome to approach the desk and ask. If one of them doesn't know they will get someone more qualified to answer. I for one hate to be tracked through a store while I'm shopping. I want to wander and look at the products available without a shadow or someone breaking my thought asking if I need help. If you do need help then just ask. They are all more than willing to help. The employees here have been the same group of people for the last three years with only a couple of additions over that time. They don't all work the same hours so they aren't always there. Why would someone expect the same person to be at the shop everyday over 12 hours a day? We all need breaks. I frequently need bulks of products that they have to go to the back to get and not once have they complained or taken a huge amount of time in retrieving my products. Some of their prices could be better on some products but their basic collars are priced great. Toys could be a little lower so could some of the beds and bowls and such but those are mostly fluff items that rarely sell. Some have complained on the cost of the foods. Where else can you buy these brands? What comparison do you have if no one else in town stocks the same products? Lovin Bark & Purr since 2006 read more

I used to really like this store; however, my trip this past week will be my last. When I went to check out, the cashier tried to hard sell tick and flee prevention for my cats. I said no thank you and listened to her sales pitch. She then started to try and sell me food by asking what kind I feed my cats. I explained that they were on prescription food and hoped that would be the end of this second sales pitch. Unfortunately, I got a lecture for several minutes about how prescription food was a ploy by veterinarians to make money and that I shouldn't be feeding them dry food. She said I should switch them to a wet, raw food diet. I was getting really frustrated and again just said no thank you. She continued for another minute and ended by telling me that I should go do some research. I worked and managed in retail for many years and understand that employees are often just doing as instructed by upper-level management. But to tell a pet owner that they are feeding their animals the "wrong" food without any knowledge about the reasons why--and then to say they should "go do research"--is extremely off-putting. read more

Love Bark and Purr, they have literally been the best pet supply co. in Austin. I was out of my dogs food and they delivered it to my work the same day! THEN, that dog food was making one of my dogs sick so I need another dog food on the fly and they delivered same day too. I am a furever customer of theirs, they're extraordinary. Thank you B&P for just being plain AWESOME!!! read more

I discovered Bark N Purr during a visit to Austin before I moved here. They have this amazing wet food that my kitties absolutely love...one of only a couple places here in town that carry it. Anyway, I decided to buy four or five small cans of the food, totalling less than $4. My paychecks come directly deposited, so I hardly ever carry cash. The guy behind the counter hassled me about using my debit card for such a small amount. He said that, "you know, the store doesn't make any money on credit transactions less than $5." I told him it was a debit card and he said that it didn't make a difference. I was upset enough that he just put it on the card, but he wasn't very happy about it. I feel that if they really feel that strongly, that they should post a sign with a minimum credit purchase or something...perhaps they have since then. I haven't been back. read more

it seems the customer service at bark n purr is slipping. my last visit was such a disappointment i'm not sure i want to return. being the only person in the store, i was searching for an automatic water feeder. the two guys working behind the desk (wait they weren't working...they were pre-closing the register) just stared at me, as i wondered around the same isle. no attempt to assist me was made and i wasn't too pleased to give my business to this store when i know that "just for pets" off far west will special order the same thing for me. i needed it pretty quickly though. finally as i am checking out, i ask a few questions about the product and get these pathetic, i don't care answers. blarg. the icing on the cake is the damn feeder is leaking. double blarg. read more

I have been a Bark n' Purr customer off and on for the last 12 years. As an owner of several pets with different nutritional needs, I am always impressed by their selection of foods. I do feel as if they have the best pet food selection in town. I am in total agreeance with several of the other posters regarding the owner's behavior...I, too, have witnessed him treat his staff quite rudely several times. Once, as I was checking out, the owner interupted my conversation with the sales associate and scolded him harshly. Obviously, the sales associate was embarrassed - I felt really bad for him. It was just an uncomfortable situation all around. If he treats his staff like this in front of customers, I can only imagine what he is like behind closed doors. So I am completely torn about this place...while they have everything I need to take excellent care of my pets, I have trouble supporting a business with this kind of owner. read more

I used to absolutely LOVE Bark n Purr. It's in my neighborhood and I love the variety of stuff they carry. Recently with the change in ownership I've become disappointed. The new owners just aren't friendly - people wise or dog wise. When a pet store owner yells at your tiny dog for pee-pee'ing on their CONCRETE floor, something's not right. Either they're in the wrong business or she (the female owner) was having a bad day. Either way, don't take it out on me or my yorkie! I couldn't get out of there fast enough. read more

Really?! I walk into a high end, independently owned pet food store and I get no eye contact, no greeting, because the young man behind the counter is logging in...this after his driver completely blocked the parking lot for him to be dropped off. I asked if he was available to help me and his response, he who barely could take his eyes off the computer, was: "it depends." Oh really? Another man, no greeting, no politeness, came up behind him and said: "he's logging in." Ok, well, I'm sure the owner would be happier for this kid to log in vs make a sale. I was called stupid when I walked out because I don't want to be treated this way. Nice. Off to Petsmart. So much for "buy local." Have fun on your computer; possibly some customer service training would be helpful or rehiring. read more

I refuse to shop here - with all the lovely local pet stores around town who give excellent customer service, why would I shop at Bark n Purr - they have gotten too big for their britches I think. Dismissive, disinterested, rude and some of them act like they know what they are talking about with the different foods in there but its all jabber - they don't know a bag of Orijen from a bag of Ol' Roy. There are plenty of places who sell quality pet food as well as great treats and toys without all the attitude. read more

I have never been to this store. Yep, that's right. 5 stars and I've never been there. What I have done, is used their FREE (with an order of $20 or more) delivery service. Recently I chose to begin feeding my cats a raw food diet but it's time consuming to make. A friend told me that Bark n Purr carries a good selection of raw foods so I looked them up a la the internet and discovered that they deliver. Now here's the awesome part: they don't deliver to my area. How is this awesome? I got in touch with Lance at the shop and he was glad to include my home in the delivery area for the delivery zone closest to me. He set up my online account, informed me and set me up with their rewards program (which is a very nice perk) the same day and I was able to take delivery 4 days later. My cats love the food (a little too much as they now beg) and I can get almost all of my supplies through Bark n Purr, conveniently delivered to my door. Raw foods are packaged in a reusable envelope with cooling packs for $2 and when you return them, they credit you for the charge (kind of like Greenling if you are familiar). I asked them in the delivery instructions to put the envelope in the cooler I left at the door (full of ice) and when I returned a few hours after delivery, the food was still frozen, sealed in their envelope, no problems. It may sound lazy to use a pet food delivery service but my super micro-managed schedule doesn't allow much time for me to drive out to them within their business hours and get my products refrigerated in time. Very convenient, friendly service. My products were correct, delivered in a timely and courteous manner. read more

This place used to be awesome. They had staff members that were helpful and answered all of my questions. Now the people who work there are clueless about pets and the products they sell. Also, it's frustrating that they keep rearranging the store. I go by every 2 weeks and each time I can't find the cat food. Hopefully they'll improve, but for now I'm going somewhere else. read more

I love it when you read reviews and it makes you feel like, "Oh, it's not just me. That employee was VERY unhelpful." Well my hubby and I just adopted our first puppy and dropped a lot of dough here. The puppy is worth it but we were both saying "Wow, those guys were not helpful!" We were trying to ask lots of questions as new dog owners but the guys working there wouldn't deign to offer opinions when it was clear we were looking for advice. I would think they would hire animal lovers that are looking to help out other dog owners, but not so much! Meh. read more

I normally shop at Tomlinson's for my cat's "higher end" food but Ive come by here in the past few months because I was in the area and needed some things. They are much more expensive than Tomlinson's(well if you have a Tomlinson's membership like I do). They have a much larger variety of cat accessories compared to Tomlinson's, but some of the things there seem wayyy over priced, like over $10 for a simple ceramic(clay?) feeding dish??? They have all these nice kitty toys, but one little toy that costs 4 or 5 dollars??? heck no. Some of my cats would destroy some of them rather quickly, so it's not worth me buying. They do sell pill pockets $1 cheaper than they are at Petco however. SO there' at least that. I have splurged a little the past couple times I went there, I got this nice rubber mat to put my kitties water and food dish on that was around $12 I think, and I bought a $35 dollar sleeping mat for my cats, made out of the softest velvetiest furriest material ever. I would normally never spend that much money on a cat bed, but my cats love it, so it was not a waste. This place will cater to your needs if you are putting your cat and or dog on a better diet, because they have a wide variety of foods that you won't find at Petco or Petsmart, they also carry or a raw food, but it's just too expensive for me to come here regularly. Also, both times that I have been here, I was never greeted when I came in, and was never asked by anyone walking around if I needed help with anything. Every time I go to Tomlinson's I am greeted when I come in and am asked if I need help with anything when I am doing my shopping. If you need something and get somebody, they act very helpful, which I witnessed, the friendliest employee I saw there was a woman who was helping a customer pick out dog coats for her dog. Lastly, when I would check out my items, the cashier's, both grungy, dare I use the word "hippie" looking dudes, were not the least bit engaging or friendly. AND HONESTLY, I'm usually not a stickler for those kinds of things when I shop somewhere, most of the time I just want to get in, get what I need and get out. I don't expect the staff to be super peppy and act like my slave, but a little more effort in customer service could be applied by these guys, just a touch, they've been around in Austin for so long, you'd think they'd care about that kinda thing, but whatever. read more

Bark N Purr is the Whole Foods for my dog. They have organic dog food, healthy treats and (for when I have the extra money to spend) -- a whole section of frozen raw food which I've read is the best of the best to give your pet. Not only that but this store has really competitive prices with the other chain stores in town. The last time I was there we had one of the staff following us around with a calculator helping us determine the price per pound of all the food we were selecting. Great service and a great location. Oh, and we get our dog's nails trimmed there too for a minimal price. read more

The high quality pet food cannot be beat. They are the only supplier in Austin that sells Flint River Ranch dog food which my dogs are on, and I prefer shopping locally so I purchase the food from them instead of ordering it online. They have a huge selection of unique dog collars, which I like as well. My warning is similar to others, they have no customer service. Do not prepare to go in there and have warm smiling faces, and do not plan on being treated like an appreciated customer. Go in, get your food, and leave. But, because they continue to carry brands you simply cannot get anywhere else in Austin, I shall recommend them for your high quality food needs!! read more

I called this pet store out of desperation because no store sells the acana dog food brand, but they were very informative with me about this company's situation. I say that's such a great store with great associates to take THEIR TIME to inform me with info and suggestions on food that are similar in quality to acana. I am definitely going to shop at this local pet store from now on. All because of a phone call... Keep up the good work! You definitely deserve 5 stores because of your associates! read more

I'd been going to Bark N Purr since I was a kid, however so much has changed there. I understand trying to meet the depend of the ever growing neighborhood around you, but I feel like they have missed the mark on where they started. They used to have a very down-home and happy vibe, now they seem so uppity. I feel like I've been judged for things that I'm buying (and no, it's not low cost crappy food!) and I feel ignored. I also have been given miss information from the staff. I understand that they receive much of their information from their sales reps, but it's biased and that should be taken into consideration on their end. I love shopping local, and would love to return to the store I grew up with, but I think I'll stick to Tomilinson's. **Notice, I'm not being rude, nor am I trying to start any kind of argument. I've tried to keep this pretty benign & fair. read more
