It's unfortunate, but this store has gone downhill since it was sold to a national chain. Be warned that this store allows their employees to bring their dogs to work and they keep them tethered at the register which does not provide a visible barrier to any dogs walking in or out of the store. Today they had a large German Shepherd tied behind the counter. We walked in and my dog saw the dog and immediately started barking at the GSD. Were we in the wrong? Sure. But if I had known there was going to be a large breed dog staring at us as soon as we walked in I would've taken very different action. I probably would've left my dog in the car even though this is her all-time favorite store because of the great memories when it was just bark and purr. The worst part was that the dog barked back and could not be settled. And it was pretty apparent that the girl handling him did not know how to distract him as she let him continue to hard stare and bark at my dog even when we were trying to leave. If you're going to let your employees have a dog at work, it needs to be bulletproof. It should be able to have any dog bark at it and show zero reaction. With so many stores in the area, this is the last time I will be returning to this one. read more

For all the chain haters, this pet store is for you. Near the corner of Burnet Rd and 45th, come in a peruse the pet merchandise and then drop by the Upper Crust for your iced latte where you can discuss your purchases. IMO, the best thing about the B&P is the grooming service. We have a Siberian Husky and to say he sheds a little is like saying a bear does you know what in the woods. They have something called a furrinator that helps get to the undercoat of a dog's fur. It really works. It's an extra charge to the regular shampoo but worth it. Total cost for our hairy huskey is about $45 but it's well worth it because we could spend HOURS brushing him and get no where. If Iiesha is still working there, she is the best groomer. She's come and gone and then come back again so I don't know if she is still employed at the time of this post but she can bring out markings on our dog that we never knew he had before she got her hands on him. You need to make an appointment for the grooming department and it gets pretty busy in the summertime and sometimes you have to book a week out. They also carry slabs of meat in refrigerators for those of you who might be hiding that tiger in your back yard. UPDATE: The grooming department is no longer a service of bark n purr :( BOO HISS..but you can find the people who ran the department running their own show at Groomingdales around the corner on Koenig Ln. This is my favorite dog store of all time in Austin. They have an amazing selection of treats, toys, and dog food. They even carry Zignature Kangaroo!!! Woot. They even deliver for free if you live in the designated zones. What my favorite things are about this place is that 1. You can return the dog food if at least 50% is still there. This is particularly nice because my dog went through a phase where he was super picky and didn't like anything we got for him. 2. They have corn, wheat, and soy free dog cookies! I love being able to treat my allergy ridden dog to a dog cookie that he drools over and never got to eat. 3. They open super early!!!!! We have run out of food at night and made an early morning trip to pick up some dog food. I love that they open at 7am and it's been a life saver for us. We love this dog store so much that when we ran out of dog food on the way back to SF from Houston, we drove through Austin so we could stop here because we knew they would be open and carried the brand we like. read more

I meant to write the review long time ago but I was struggling with word to describe how awesome bark n purr is!!!! If you are a raw feeding advocate, this place is your jam!!! I am switching my corgi puppy to raw diet and I was having a little trouble transitioning him. I went in to look for a probiotic to help aid his digestion. One of the lady came by and asked if I needed help. She recommend this probiotic spray bottle, which happened to be on sale for 4 sth $ instead of 9$. She is really knowledgeable and know what she is talking about. I hung out around for little longer to look at some toys for the puppy, she came back with a can of pumpkin. I happened to look for those at HEB that day and couldnt find it. Not to mention Bark n Purr has tons of raw treats. I also bought 2 toys and suprised that they were having buy 1 get 1 free that day. I WILL ALWAYS GO TO BARK N PURR FROM THAT DAY!!! I was actually one of those people who skeptical and only shop at pet smart or petco. A small bag was $16 when I got to the register and my heart jumped out of my chest. Imagine my later dismay when I was out shopping at Wheatsville and they had the same bag of food for $10.29. I've been shopping at B&P for over ten years and now drive quite a distance to do so, passing several big box pet retail centers and a lot of grocery stores on the way. And here is why: 1) They stock a plethora of healthy brands of dog food that I can't get anywhere else; 2) Their employees have a lot of knowledge, which they share freely upon being asked; 3) Customer service...besides sharing knowledge, they will also offer to carry big bags of dog food to my car; 4) They stock an interesting array of pet accessories that indicate both creativity and a social conscience; 5) Their prices are decent; 6) They are a locally owned company. As a couple of reviewers have indicated, they don't follow you around the store, so be sure to ask if you need help or want their opinions. They are always friendly. The last time I bought dog food, I picked up my usual bag of frozen raw bones for my wanna-be fierce wild hound, and the lady behind the counter even got me an ice pack to keep the kill from thawing on the ride home. (Hmmm, now I'm wondering if she used the same tricks on me.) And when she and I went to run some errands on Sunday, we went here for dog food for the golden retriever. She found what she was looking for - and then some. In fact, she was able to compare several different premium brands. My girlfriend (Katrina M) and I buy our animals pet food from Bark N Purr. The service is always great. I love going inside and seeing what the half baked staff are going to do behind the counter. Last time I was in there one of the guys ate a dog treat to persuade me that humans could eat the freshly baked treats if they desired. Admittedly sometimes the treats smell so good I wonder why I'm giving them to my dog, Milo McStevens. The price is fair, about the price you pay at PetSmart, with out the corporate feel. Loooooove me some Bark 'N Purr. I'm super snobby about what food I put in my body, and when we got a dog I didn't see any reason to feed her junky crap either, so BnP is the place to be. The staff has always been extremely helpful to me, suggesting different food and treats, and never batting an eye when I had to return something. Since my dog has a sensitive stomach, we tried pretty much every type of diet and chewy before we found the right combination, and I've always felt confident about the quality of their products. I even started to buy a treat once and was warned off by an employee who remembered us and my girl's stomach issues. Yes, it's more expensive. It's not cheap, and the people behind the counter never seem to smile, but I love this place. I go here because of the alternative options they provide. If you're looking for something outside the box of major brands for your four-legged friend, you will find it here! They have a huge selection of grain free and by-product free foods, and there's even a refrigerator case of raw food. I honestly didn't even know that existed for animals, but okay! The kind of food I feed my kitty can only be found in specialty shops and I swear, every time I'm here getting it, a different employee comes up and tells me about how great that brand of food is and how they feed it to their own feline at home. That makes me feel good. Plus they're always full of free advice for whatever random questions I have. They also have unique toys, as opposed to the same ol' same ol' that you find elsewhere. I do wish their Go Local card benefit was better. It's currently "10% off toys". But I don't always need a new toy. I'd much rather prefer a discount I can appreciate with every visit. Or it'd be nice if they did storewide sales occasionally, or something to offset the cost of the kitty's "special food". But other than that, I can't complain. I do love this place. read more

I love this place for one reason: Furminator. I have a sheddy dog. I love him dearly, but the boy sheds so much that I can make a new dog once a week with the hair that lines the house. So I found out about Ferminator and started taking my precious boy every few weeks to have this done to him. The results are a much happier dog and mom, with clean floors taboot. Between pet-sitting and acquiring an animal of my own, I've made more than a few trips to Bark N' Purr. I've never experienced bad customer service and in fact have seen staff members encourage each other to help customers (perhaps I just pick up the good staff members, ha ha. As a stereotypical librarian, all I need is a quilted cat tote bag and they can pretty much sense me coming from a mile off.) While it may be a bit more expensive to shop here, it's totally worth it. They'll douse your cat's playthings in catnip if you want (in my case, to remove cats from new leather furniture and to lure them to appropriate cat furniture, which has worked swimmingly.) read more

I love Bark N' Purr. Family owned and the folks that work there really love pets and are knowledgeable about pet nutrition. I went in the other day and wound up talking to Sandy for about 30 minutes about pet food. I wound up getting a new, more nutritious, and higher protein food for my dogs and all new food for my cat. The dogs were thrilled with what I got them and the cat was pretty much a jerk about his new food (what I expected)....but I think in time he will get used to the change. On the bright side, my dogs also liked the cat snacks (fish flakes) I got him so if he won't eat them they certainly won't go to waste! Love the frequent buyer card they have and also love the bin outside the store where you can donate pet food for needy pets. read more

We stopped going to Petsmart after discovering this place. Sure, there's technically less selection, but they carry anything worth buying for your pet, as in, no crappy dog food. They only carry the stuff you should be feeding your dog or cat. I've used Bark n Purr for many years. I would never use anyone else again; every time I try, I regret it. In a town of dog lovers, I can't recommend using Bark n Purr more. Just try them for a chew toy or treats the first time, and trust me, you will keep going back; it never hurts to try. The staff at Bark n Purr are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and will even help you to your car and carry food for you. If you can't make it to the store due to an odd work schedule, they deliver to a lot of Austin for free if you order $20 or more at a time, and the other zip codes cost only $5 for delivery; check their delivery map, but it is quite extensive. A lot of people think feeding their pet nicer foods is too pricey, but you can find great food at Bark n Purr for almost the same price as the cheaper foods, and your pet will love you. read more

I was introduced to Bark 'N Purr by my dog trainer, who advised me to only feed my dog top quality food, usually not sold at regular pet stores (i.e. Petco). I was happy to learn Bark N' Purr offered free delivery since those bags can be quite hefty. It's also nice to be able to manage your account online and arrange for a subscription if you plan to buy regularly, ensuring your dog will not run out of food. My pup had the runs recently and I suspected the culprit to be the recent batch of dog food since my pup did fine on the previous batches and actually loved the higher protein grain free kibble. I called and asked if there was something they could do. They happily offered to refund the food in its original bag. They also gave me good advice on how to treat my pup. I later learned it was Costco's bully stuck (Cadet brand beware!) that was causing his sickness. Poor guy, he loved those sticks. I will be returning them stick asap (I bought 5 bags!) Anyhow, you can tell these guys are passionate about what they do and truly care for the well being of our lovely pets. Try them out! read more

Very cool place close to downtown if you're searching for food for your pets that's more higher grade than what you'll find at the grocery store. I love this place because they sell Orijen dog food. My mini Aussie has been given this brand of dog food ever since he was two months old & he loves it! The food is so pure they say it's even safe for human consumption. Barr n purr even offers the thirteenth bag free after you buy twelve. Only downfall is you have to hold on to the receipts. It would be way easier if they just kept a log book of your purchase, but oh well. A huge bonus too is if you live nearby and purchase anything over $20, they will deliver it to you for free! read more

I visited the store for the first time today. I was tired of being disappointed by Tomlinson's and would rather give my money to a local establishment than Petsmart. I couldn't find what I was looking for, and when I asked the older man who was working behind the counter, he seemed annoyed by my question and directed me to a younger employee. I ended up buying some different cat food for my kitten to try and the older guy gave me a can of it on the house, telling me his cats love it. I felt a lot better about the experience after that. We've been buying his food here for the past 5 or 6 years and they could not be a more knowledgeable, nicer bunch of folks. Some of my most memorable occasions include my dog going HAYWIRE when we used to drop him off for grooming and the nice owner just picking him up and placing him in my car without saying what he was really thinking, "Get the hell out of my shop before your 100 pound dog causes damage to my store!" I've been going to Bark 'N Purr off and on for a few years now. First when I had my dog and now with my sister's puppy. The staff are always really nice and friendly - but then again, who isn't when you have a cute dog at your side? I tend to view this store a little on the higher end specialty side only because I see a lot of really nice high quality treats and toys that I wouldn't normally see in big box stores like petco & such. I like that difference. I've been to a lot of dog boutiques and sometimes all they do is change the atmosphere, but the products they carry are not too different from petco, the main difference being that the prices are more expensive and there's less selection. I like that it seems the vast majority of the products carried here tend to focus more on what's good for the dog - grain free - lack preservatives & such. Another nice bonus is that if you have a busy schedule, you can order online and delivery is free in the Austin area. I like how they try to make it easier to be a good dog owner. read more

This is a great store to buy high-quality food for dogs or cats, and while the dog selection is larger, it's still balanced enough that cat owners won't feel left out. Food & Products: They provide a wide selection of high-quality brands (both well-known and boutique brands) in the different varieties of dried crunchy, canned, or raw food diets. They have a nice selection of treats, toys, and bedding as well. For cat owners, they also have different brands of litter and fancy electrical litter boxes. *Taking a moment to show off* but my cat uses the toilet so I don't need this. If I had the bumper sticker I wouldn't need to mention it on yelp. ;) Only negative, I wish they'd stock up a little more on the supplements and vitamins for cats since the dog selection is much more ample. Service: The staff is very friendly and helpful (they even offer to carry your bags to the car). However, I feel they are just slightly hesitant to answer "what is the best food brand in your opinion" and I'm not sure if it's because they're unable to answer that due to the large brand selection, or if they're just trying to avoid a long discussion on the best diet for a pet. Either way, I've done my research so I know what to get. Pet Tip: Grain-free 100% for cats! They're not dogs! And if you're trying the raw diet for the first time, I started mine on Rad Cat's free-range chicken. My cats really enjoy eating it and they transition flawlessly between canned food and Rad Cat's chicken or turkey meals. The store also offers a home delivery program which I just found out about, so I'm excited to try it. Location: It's very convenient to get here and even during the busy hours you will always find a parking spot thanks to the private parking lot in front. The building is easy to navigate once inside, and items are easy to find. It's a tad dusty so a nice cleaning would definitely spruce up the place. Additional: Thanks to Bark & Purr, I finally found a pet bed that has a removable pillow AND a covering with a zipper for the base, so that 100% of my pet's bedding can be washed. (At the major stores I've only found pet bedding with a removable pillow, but the actual bed frame has to be washed by hand and then looks ruined and disheveled because they're too cheap to add the zipper). So thank you Bark & Purr for carrying a higher-quality, and much better made pet bed. Note for Management: I wish you would carry the cat-food brand Halo. They make a high-quality canned food that my cats just love, so whenever I have to travel at least they're eating something good at the boarding facility. If you would start carrying this brand then you'd be my one-stop pet food shop. Or if you begin carrying an Organic cat-food brand (moist/canned) that also uses free-range poultry, and is grain-free, I would start purchasing that instead. read more

Bark 'N Purr is great.....if you already know what you need. I've been in multiple times and they have a great selection of toys and pet supplies. The real shiny part of the store is the food selection, however. They even offer free, fast delivery of food to your house from online ordering! This is super convenient. The prices are normal and I enjoy browsing around. My dog is picky and has a sensitive stomach so Bark 'N Purr is one of the few places I can get his food. However, I never feel quite at ease in Bark 'N Purr. It feels like I'm in the way or invading their space somehow. The staff I think would be helpful with a direct question, but they haven't volunteered to help me ever. When I contrast how I feel in Bark 'N Purr as compared to some other specialty pet stores (Just For Pets in particular), it's way less comfortable. These are pretty minor quibbles though and Bark 'N Purr offers great products to the Austin-area. read more

I've had nothing but good experiences with Bark 'N Purr. The staff has always been very helpful. One day during the dog food recall the food we were feeding our dog (Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance) was nowhere to be found in the store. I asked at the counter and they explained that the flavor we had been feeding was not recalled but because ONE of the flavors in the line was recalled and because the DVP Nat'l. Balance people had been less than honest about their ingredients, B 'N P pulled the whole line off the shelves. I appreciate their high standards. They helped me find another food that worked for our allergy-prone dog. It is expensive to feed high quality food but they have a program for many of the brands they carry where after you buy 10 bags you get a bag free. Their squeaky toy selection is good. One toy we bought there - a pink octopus by Ty Bow Wow Beanie with both crinkle and squeak - has proven to be really popular and, so far, has lasted a long time. I have been buying my kitties food and toys from Bark N Purr for about six months now, and I have had nothing but good experiences. I live about a block away from PetSmart but still make the trek across town for supplies. I feed my cats Innova, which you basically have to get at a specialty store. It's expensive, sure, but just as expensive as anywhere else - the price you pay for food with lots of real meat and no corn! I have to say I'm baffled by reviewers who say the staff is rude and inattentive. Having worked in the service industry in the past, I understand that there is lots to keep up with behind the counter and you can't always expect someone to come running up to help you. When I moved to Austin, I needed help finding grain-free food for my cat. Bark 'n' Purr not only carried a variety of grain-free cat food, but they were also knowledgeable about the food. Since then, I have had to switch foods a couple of times, due to a new kitten and changing eating habits. They have been great. One week, I had to try three different dry foods until I found one my cat would eat. They let me exchange the bags until my cat chose one. I also appreciate their willingness to listen to what I need. I probably give more information than is needed, but they listen and consider all the factors. Also, they carry my bags to the car. "Hi, I need to get some dog food for my new dog" "We'll sell you some recalled dog food for cheap" And that's how my interaction with the Bark N Purr staff started out the other day. Of course, the employee was quick to point out that they do not, in fact, sell any of the food that was recalled in that crazy food recall this month (point number one why I love this store - quality, non-lethal food), and I laughed and probably said something I thought was cute and witty. The two guys working were both extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the products. One of the guys asked me a few things about my dog and then pointed out several products that would be good for my shoe-loving dog, showing me a few quality products and clueing me into the value of getting the big ol' 40 pound bag of food. I learned so much about feeding my dog in five minutes, it was pretty amazing. After deciding on the dog food and finding some toys for my animals, I couldn't help but purchase one of the bright pink glazed (with sprinkes!) flower-shaped dog cookies that sit in a bakery case by the registers. (Note: Get one of these - your pet will love it. C'mon, it's a real cookie...for your dog...amazing) Two other plusses: 1. They can give you the lowdown on good trainers to fit your specific animal problems (i.e. agressive animals, basic training, etc.) 2. They carry those massive bags of dog food to your car for you. I was going to joke to the guy that he should come home with me and help me unload the bag too, but I thought it might sound a little like a bad pick up line. Which...it really would have been. Love this place! I've only been here a handful of times due to the fact that it is far from my part of the town but I always find it worth it! They have all the usual grain free brands along with a load of dry treats! They are by far the company with the largest in house selection of raw foods and treats! They also carry a number of reasonably priced toys, as in A LOT! Also if you are looking for a bed or leash/collar they have HUGE variety of all. I have always been treated well by the staff and they have always been able and willing to give me information on product whenever I ask. To be honest, never noticed if they said hello or asked me if I needed help, but if they did that's great, if not it doesn't bother me. If I need help, I'll let them know and they are happy to help! A big plus to me is that they don't sit there and pretend to love your dogs to try and get your business. I take my dogs because they allow it and my dogs enjoy going to the pet store, not because I want to show them off and have everyone pet them. And if the staff takes interest in them, they ask before petting them. I also have spoken to the staff over the phone regarding supplements and they even went as far as offering an alternate facility to purchase what I needed since they didn't carry it. Gotta love a place that knows how to network with others in their industry! To all those reviewers who are complaining about the customer service: Are you there for the product or to have your you know what kissed the second you walk in the door, wearing your crown whilst strutting down a red carpet? And of course there are two sides to every story. If the owner reacted badly to a dog making a mess, it may be viewed as rude, BUT as a customer in a public business keep in mind it is a luxury, not a right, to take your pup into a store with you and minding their piddling is up to you, show some tact and take responsibility for not monitoring your dog. Contrary to some previous reviews, I think the customer service at Bark 'N Purr is slammin. These guys know their stuff, always help me find a solution when my cats are being weird, and even have a "if your pet doesn't like the food, return the opened bag for a full refund" policy. That's awesome. Plus, if anyone has actually been inside the hell that is Petsmart, they will be thrilled with Bark 'N Purr. I love this store. The staff always seems genuinely happy to greet their customers. They constantly ask for updates about my fur babies. They are helpful and knowledgeable about what I should or could use with my dog with allergies, and my favorite part is if you forget what the name of something you purchased was, they can look it up for you! They took the time to help me choose harnesses, helping me find sizes, learn to put on easily, and assuring me that if it didn't work to my liking, I could return. This pet supply store has gone above and beyond to help me with my pet. I own a german shephard/akita mix that is basically allergic to everything outside (trees/weeds/grasses) and has several food allergies. I was worried that there would be an issue finding food that she could eat. I took her long list of allergens in to the shop and felt nervous that this would cost me a lot. I was escorted all of the store and shown all of the foods and treats my dog could have. The sales guy as very knowledgeable on all of the products in the store. He was very helpful and didn't act put out by my request. I really appreciated that he took the time to assist me in finding the foods/treats that would work for my dog. I have to admit, the fact that there is so many options is a huge selling point for me.
