We were over the moon when we found out that West End Grooming was excepting larger dogs. We have two very mild mannered Akitas and had to take them across town to have them groomed. The other place was subpar at best. One of our dogs cannot jump up and down from our vehicle or on to a grooming platform. The gentle employees at West End lift him like he weighs nothing and our boy is not fearful with them. They are very inflexible in their schedule and seem to forget who is the customer. Act as though they are doing you a favor for grooming your dog! Notes on Basic Customer Service: 1. If your business moves, and you have customers who use the internet and smartphones, make sure to update your address on all possible sites: GoogleMaps, Yelp, etc. Your business' website should not be considered the sole reference. 2. If customers are referred to you by Yelp, and state as much when they call to schedule an appointment, ensure that you give them the proper address if you have not completed #1. 3. If a customer calls to say they are at your old address and to please give the new address, and you are not easily found by going to said new address, please detail how to find your business. (This particular one is only accessible by going around the next block to the back of the building, not accessible from its actual streetside address. Just to be clear, the address is on Guadalupe. You cannot get there from Guadalupe.) 4. After giving customers the run-around just to find the place, if a customer is on the verge of tears when they finally arrive because of how late you have now made them, apologize, and ask if there is anything they can do to make it up to them. 5. If apologizing isn't something you are capable of, at least try to calm them. Avoid going on the defensive. If the first words out of your mouth are "I don't mean to sound snippy, BUT...", perhaps you should re-think how you deal with distressed customers. 6. Part of being in the business of customer service is sometimes sucking it up and admitting you are in the wrong, even if you sometimes don't think you are. If you aren't good at dealing with people, and you just want to deal with dogs, hire a person who IS good at the people part to man the front so you don't piss off an eager potential advocate for your business. I have never in my life been treated so poorly, made to feel so small or unimportant, or yelled at so unnecessarily by a business in my life. They must really not need new customers if they are willing to treat first-time customers who have been waiting a week for their services with such disrespect. Needless to say, I cannot review the skills of the groomer as I did not leave my dog with them to find out. read more

Just took my dog to West End for the first time to get her nails trimmed. They put her on the grooming table and slipped a rope around her neck to keep her in place. The groomer stepped away for a second, and my dog stepped off the table. She was hanging in the air with a rope around her neck for a second or so. The groomer then saw her and put her back on the table. My dog appears to be fine, but this is so incredibly ridiculous. My dog was literally being hung by her neck. There is a window into the grooming room, so I saw it all happen. I can't understand how a professional dog groomer could let a dog hang suspended in the air with a rope around her neck. read more

IMPORTANT: Directions on How To Find West End Grooming: --Head North on Guadalupe. University of Texas should be in your rear view mirror (obviously if you are heading South then UT will be ahead of your direction). --Turn right on 34th Street (Left if you are coming South down Guadalupe) --Go down a bit and turn left on Fruth. West End Grooming will be on the left and has a large parking lot for you to park in. Their address is Guadalupe because they share the same building as Anytime Fitness which faces Guadalupe. However, since West End Grooming is in the back of the building you have to turn on 34th then turn on Fruth to get access. I love the prices they charged to get my dog groomed. As for the rest of the experience I will go straight to the source and turn things over to my dog, Dolly who is a 2 year old apricot colored cockapoo: Woof, woof woof woof!! Bow Wow Wow. Woof and Woof and woof, and woof...oops let me translate: "Well, I must say when I saw the other dogs entering the building I got pretty excited. I love going to popular places with other dogs like me. One of the dogs entering was a poodle and since I am part poodle I had to give a special nod and woof to my clan. She however did not reciprocate and gave me a rather stern look. After a few minutes of standing together to get checked in she seemed to warm up to me. I think down the road we will best BFF's. Anywho, I digress... At first I was a bit concerned when I saw my mommy leaving me with these new, strange people. Who were these people?! I was put into a kennel. I waited. It wasn't too long thereafter that I found myself in a bath with lots of soap and bubbles. I was in Heaven! Baths are my favorite things. I was carefully and expertly trimmed including my ears and eyes which give me trouble sometimes. I felt so much better! I don't know what kind of shampoo they use but my fur has never felt so clean and soft, not greasy at all. The owner was so nice to me--I have been to many groomers and I can tell she really cares and that she loved me. She even told my mommy that I did such a great job during my bath and blow dry. I tried to break into one of the bags of dog food on the way out. I just couldn't help myself. There were so many delicious options to choose from here. Unfortunately I got caught and scolded by my mommy. Don't worry though, scolding does nothing for me. I test boundaries all the time and get scolded in return all the time. I guess you could say I am kinda a Lost Cause in some regards, but nonetheless a loving one at that and thanks to West End Grooming I am clean and happy. I cannot wait to go back!" read more

When I first moved to Austin I was recommended to go here to have my Maltese groomed. HUGE disaster! I took them in and made very specific notes on what was to be done on each dog. (Both had beautiful show-quality coats). When I returned later in the day they were SHAVED. I was so completely shocked I could not believe they did this to me and my beautiful Maltese. I spoke with the ladies there and no customer service whatsoever... they told me it was my problem and I had to pay for them destroying my dogs. It took a good 12 months for them to get even close to looking the same. I also asked them to put "bows" in their hair. However, when I returned they had some gross material that they made into a scarf for each dog. It was horrible looking and smelled. I could not wait to get my dogs out of there. And yes, I had to give each of them a bath when I got them home b/c they smelled like urine! Avoid this place, seriously. The BEST place I have found for my dogs is Exemoor. it is a bit out of the way for me but well worth it. My dogs walk in there wagging their tails. Good luck! read more

Good luck finding the entrance. As a first time customer and having spoken to them by phone twice, no one ever told me that their address on Guadalupe does not at all describe the location of the business. In tiny letters at the bottom of their home page it does say entrance on Fruth St. You would think they would be more interested in people finding their entrance. I spoke with them twice about getting a trip for my Great Pyrenees. I emphasized no shave, just a trip and thinning to keep the natural shape of the Pyrenees coat. When I arrived they insisted on cutting her with electric clippers. When I explained again, what I wanted she said it was labor intensive and would cost over $100 and she wasn't willing to do it (even though I had no problem with paying that price or more). Unless you want a fast standard cut so they caqn fit in as many dogs as possible without taking too much of their time, I would not recommend this place. read more

I had a very bad experience with West End Grooming. I'm still sick to my stomach every time I look at my poor dog. I have a maltese/poodle mix, mostly poodle. Her hair was real long and beginning to matt up. i'm used to getting her shaved short every 6 months or so. This was my first visit to West End. I don't know what those people did to her, but the dog is totally traumatized. The hair on her ears was long. Its always been long, so image my confusion when they brought her out and all the hair on her ears was shaved. Why? She looks awful, and she knows it. She's been crying and pacing for hours. They made no attempt to give her any kind cut. They just flat out shaved her clean--ALL OVER. Whoever groomed her, shaved and cut on her so hard she's still uncomfortable, hours later. When I went to pick her up, they had the nerve to tell me she was anxious and nervous--like it was the dog's fault they don't know how to groom a dog What made me decide to post this was the fleas. My dog never had fleas. I treat her regularly. So why does she now have fleas? When I noticed the fleas I gave her a good hard sniff to see if they'd even bathed her. Stinky dog smell. Jeez. It will take a year for the hair on my dog's ears to grow out to what it should be. I made the mistake of thinking professional dog groomers know how to take a scruffy dog and give her a cute haircut. Well, these folks don't. Their idea of grooming a scruffy dog is to shave everything off. No skills, obviously no affection, and not very clean. I would not recommend West End Grooming. read more

I've only had my dog groomed here once. We had an obedience competition the next day, and I wanted my rescue dog to look gooood. He came back smellin' like a rose and lookin' like a champ. More importantly, the next few times we walked past West End, he veered toward the front door. What really earns West End five stars is the way they handle dogs. One of my friends is fostering a severely undersocialized, very fearful border collie who is still learning to love people. Most groomers would turn a dog like that away, or worse, handle her clumsily and either traumatize her or provoke a bite. This BC left West End fluffy and shiny, but more importantly, she had another positive experience with humans under her belt. Other clients and friends have good things to say about West End. It's someplace I feel good about referring people to. read more

Just tried West End for the first time this morning. Love, love, love! I have used another popular groomer for the past five years but was getting tired of their mediocre service and high prices. A bad experience earlier this year turned me off of them for good. After an extensive search, I decided to give West End a try. They were wonderful - really caring. It's obvious they want the dogs to be as happy as their people. The atmosphere in the shop is calm and quiet. Usually my dog is nervous and shaking when it's time to leave the groomer; today, as we were leaving, she turned around and gave the groomer a lick on the hand! She had a great day! The cut is great - exactly what I asked for. And, best of all, the price was VERY reasonable - $15 less than the other guys have been charging me. Only drawback - it is a little tough to get in, especially on the weekend - so book early. You won't be sorry! read more

I really like this place. I don't have a pure bred show dog or anything - he's a Tibetan Spaniel mix that we rescued - so we don't have any very specific guidelines for how to groom him. Just get that hair off! The ladies that work there are really nice and it's a local place, which is always a plus for me. My dog always comes back happy and with a cute little bandanna around his neck. It seems a little pricey - we usually pay $50 for a service. But, I don't mind paying for a job well done. Added bonus: My dog is a pee-monster and they never seem to care....so, sorry if my dog caused your dog to smell like urine, as the above poster mentioned. ;) read more

I have been looking for a good groomer around in the central Austin area, and I'm happy to have finally found West End Grooming! I brought my pup, Sadie, for a nail trim and nail grinding as a walk-in appointment. Sadie does NOT like her nails trimmed or her paws touched in general, so I'm always skeptical to try somewhere new. I was so happy with how relaxed Sadie was during her appointment, and she came out with her tail wagging. This rarely happens with her after getting her nails done, so it was the most positive indication that the groomers at West End are great with dogs. The prices were also really fair, $16 total for the nail trim and grind at that time. We'll be happy to return to West End Grooming! read more

In response to Meg B. - bf the move I was given a flier with a map to the new location EVERY TIME i visited and TOLD about it every time I called. I was told the new shop would be behind the old Amy's Ice Cream but I had no clue where that was and I also lost my fliers. Big deal - I used my iPhone and found the place without a single problem. I'm not sure how taking a right (if you're coming from the South) on 34th street could be that confusing. In my opinion - not being able to find something isn't a reason to bash a GREAT group of people. So on to my review: I sought out West End when my Cocker Spaniel began to have health problems and I no longer felt I could subject her to the stress of an all day stay at a chain pet store. She was only 3 when we started using West End. She is 5 now and I have to say that after 2 years I STILL feel so good dropping her off for her "spa day." I know beyond doubt she will be taken care of like a princess. I TRUST West End implicitly with her health and well-being plus they do AMAZING work - she always looks exactly how I've specified. Lucy's groomer Natalie does a great cocker cut which leads me to mention that they also try and match up the dogs with the groomers with whom they have the best relationships. It's attention to detail you only get when people truly care. It's a great, local shop that I'm happy to support with my business. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants that distinctly small-town, Austin experience that's getting harder and harder to find. read more

I've taken my pups to West End for years now- through 3 locations, at least. And it's been a generally good experience. My dogs have all been rescues and for the two who needed grooming- I doubt either dog had gone to a groomer more than once before in their lives. West End made grooming a pleasant experience for both my sweet little Cavachon and my admittedly spazzy Bichon Frise. My only problem-ever- was that my Cavachon became nervous about going to the groomers after a while. My having a major collision en route one morning probably explains that and I'd never hold it against West End. In fact, they were able to settle her down and give her a somewhat normal day for her. But she never wanted to go back to the 24th Street location so I had to find another groomer to fill in for a time. I'll admit that all I ever ask for is a pretty basic cut with perhaps very closely trimmed paws (better for burr avoidance). But they've done what I've wanted each time and called when they said they would for pup pickup and at a reasonable price. There's not much more that I need- neither was a show dog- so I'm perfectly happy with their service. Oh- and this may seem silly but it's not the norm for all groomers- the dogs get a walk during their spa day. That I find very important for all involved! Are they tricky to find right now? Not really, with the directions on their website. I'm just happy that I could park easily. And that they're still the same great folks after moving all over the West Campus area. read more

I've tried a lot of different groomers around Austin & West End is by far the best! It's a bit of a wait to get in for an appointment, but always worth it for our golden doodle! Plus, it's very affordable for the quality of work they do! The owners only take a few dogs a day, so you know they treat each of them very well! They always do a great job with what I ask - whether it be a full groom or just a bath/blow out. They text you throughout the day and take your dog to the bathroom, too. So happy we found West End! We have taken our two shih tzus to West End for four years. The cuts are arguably the best in Austin and they treat the dogs like family. They are pricey, tho - I spend more on ONE dog haircut than I spend on my own hair... at a salon. I'll admit, I have tried branching out to find a cheaper/ more conveniently located groomer, but no one else comes close to the quality and overall treatment of our darling pets. I will continue to make the trek and pay the premium because they're worth it. read more

My dogs LOVE West End, and that seals the deal for me! I've been taking my two rescues - one shih tzu/lhasa mix, one chinese crested terrier mix - here for over a year, and their tails wag every time we walk in the door. It's true, they're not show dogs, but they always look adorable when I pick them up. The groomers at West End do a great job, especially on the face and around the eyes, and they manage to capture the personality of each dog in their adorable haircuts. They also get complimentary bandanas which is super-cute, although they last about a day on my feisty little ones. We've had bad experiences at other groomers - ahem, Petco - like not expressing glands, not trimming the nails because the dog was "difficult," and not letting the dogs out to go to the bathroom - where my dogs came home obviously unhappy about the experience. At West End, they're excited when I drop them off, and they're happy when they come home. The groomers have never had a problem with my girls, and seem to love them just as much as I do. I whole-heartedly recommend West End if you're looking for a place your dog (and you) will enjoy. read more

I love West End! I take my bud for grooming once every two months or so. He was a shelter dog and when I got him he had matts the size of baseballs. West End was recommended to me by a friend and they got him in right away. I didn't even recognize him when I picked him up the first time! It's been over a year and WE is still my first choice for grooming. The staff is always very friendly and they are always excited to see Henry. He loves going and he gets a walk. And I get a free day! He looks beautiful every time I pick him up and the freshness definitely lasts a lot longer than if I did it myself. My only qualm is that it is pricey. It definitely costs more than my own haircut, and I only do that twice a year! But I'd say it's worth it for how happy it makes us both. read more

Hands down the BEST!!! I've had my "child" groomed at a few places in Austin and he would shiver when I pulled up to the previous places I was taking him. NOW, he jumps out of the car and runs in. Westend is quite the place! My dogs have never liked getting baths (from me), but they do LOVE spa day. I swear they know when they're supposed to go. They line up at the door and bark at me. The part I like best is that I can drop them off before work and pick them up after work. No hassle about getting them in the middle of the day - scheduling is sooooo much easier that way. Of course, they're clean and cuddly when I get them back. After their day of excitement with the other dogs and the great staff at Westend, they just want to cuddle and take a nap when we get home. read more

If you care about the integrity of where you take your pets, go elsewhere! The new owners have ruined what used to be a great place and broke trust with it's clients and community. The original owners were amazing, but unfortunately, were unexpectedly let go without warning to any of the customers when the new owners took over. My dog is a rescue and a new groomer would have had to be trained to take care of her properly, which was not possible with the abrupt changes. The new owners (Daniel and Jenni) sent out a sob story letter after the fact, when many former clients left as I did. Karma's a bitch, Daniel. There are many other wonderful groomers in Austin that treat people and pets with respect, but in my opinion, the new WEG does not deserve Austin's business. read more
