I really like this selection of food and treats they have and so forth. I have four dogs so I'm there every week. However today I called to clarify a deal that the cashier told me to come back in for today where I could get a buy one get one free on the dog food I get because he sees me all the time and is kind, I told my mom about it so she could also stock up for her pups and she was not given the deal. A great option if you are trying to avoid the big box pet stores. I found the service to be extremely welcoming! They have a large selection of natural and holistic brands with prices around what you would find elsewhere. I normally get my terrier a 14# bag of Nulo dog food and it's comparable to chewy's prices. In fact, they will price match chewy. There's also a loyalty program where you can earn free food on certain brands. I even bought a new toy for my dog and was surprised to find they had several under $12. Today I ran by here to pick up a dog cookie. As usual, there was a nice selection. The man working asked what kind of dog I have and I explained I was on my way to see a friend whose sweet pup will be crossing the rainbow bridge in the next day or two and the cookie was for that dog. I was also looking for a small gift for the same friend. We talked a bit and he helped me find the perfect gift. He was so compassionate and kind. Bark N Purr is your friendly neighborhood pet supply center. The first thing I noticed on my maiden voyage to BNP is the sign on the door that said, "We carry the Pet Odor candle." Great! With two cats in a very small house, I was excited about a product that could tone down the unwanted rank. The irony occured when I opened the door and was met with an overwhelming and unpleasant animal smell. Whew. (Okay, okay, so this is nit-picky. I realize that a place full of animals might smell like...well...animals. But the store is huge. They could at least make an attempt to air it out once in a while.) Anyway, back to business. Bark N Purr is a full-service grooming center and retail outlet. Cat car washes and dog dust-downs start at $65 and $45, respectively. (I guess it costs more moolah for them to deal with your cat's attitude. Ha.) Of course, if you're the type who thinks your pet is actually a person, they have "spa" treatments and expert grooming available. Flexible pick-up/drop-off times. As for the merchandise, they sell anything you'd need to keep a happy and healthy pet, plus a few specialty items (designer food dishes and UT Longhorn pet outfits). Food is Bark N Purr's forte. They are experts in nutrition and stock their shelves with chow that's either hand-picked by the owners or suggested by the customers. Very nice. I give props to BNP for the grooming center and the food. As for the retail..ehh...it's nice. What a great selection! I arrived and was immediately greeted by the ladies on site that day. I forget her name, but she showed me the cat selection. I picked a few cans and a bag of cat food. I missed the treats and was shown those as well. The shop was clean and organized and the staff - super friendly. Tons of options at various price ranges. I checked out and returned home. Bugs and Marcia LOVE their new fancy food! Bugs eats his entire bowl and Marcia yells when its time to eat. The wet food as actual bits of meat/fish chunks and smells like human food. With only a minimum order of $20, they will deliver to select zip codes for FREE. This basically means I never have to drive out and lug home dog food ever again. They have a smooth online ordering system, they are always reliable/prompt with their deliveries, and it has made me a very loyal customer. On the occasion that I visit their store, I love the welcoming greeting of the workers and their willingness to help me. Wow what a find!! I was looking for a place that sold Wysong pet food and aside from buying off their website which is an option, I really just wanted to get it local. After much searching, calling and web surfing I found Bark N' Purr. They were a little farther north than I wanted to go but after looking at their website I saw that they make deliveries. I talked to Lance and he fixed me up with what I needed and indeed they do make deliveries to my area. It was like ordering a pizza, it came to house the next day. I ordered a bag of litter from amazon and it was stolen from my doorstep so I had to go to a store to get it. I went to Petco and they didn't have it because they are always low on stock. Then I went to Hollywood feed and they had it! Which is great, they are always well stocked. The bag cost as much as it was priced on amazon, which makes me feel good about the prices at Hollywood Feed. When I went to check out, the cashier told me that they had same day delivery and I could order it next time. I then told him about how I had ordered litter from amazon the day before and it had been stolen from my doorstep and HE OFFERED TO GIVE ME THE LITTER FOR FREE!!! How amazing is that??? I love BARK N PURR! Why? Customer service! I like going into a store and finding staff that not only know what they're talking about, but actually enjoy sharing their knowledge. The big box retailers are very good at selling a box but that's all you get. My dogs are seniors so I have to be careful what I feed them, and I'm picky. No question is too silly to ask. You are treated as if you are the only person in the store that matters even if there are many more customers. If you go in for food, I guarantee you will leave with other goodies. I've bought beautiful mats to put my dog bowls on. I've bought treats - Truffle Mac and Cheese are the favorites. If you're looking for a gift for the dog lover, you'll find it at Bark n Purr. It's unfortunate, but this store has gone downhill since it was sold to a national chain. Be warned that this store allows their employees to bring their dogs to work and they keep them tethered at the register which does not provide a visible barrier to any dogs walking in or out of the store. Today they had a large German Shepherd tied behind the counter. We walked in and my dog saw the dog and immediately started barking at the GSD. Were we in the wrong? Sure. But if I had known there was going to be a large breed dog staring at us as soon as we walked in I would've taken very different action. I probably would've left my dog in the car even though this is her all-time favorite store because of the great memories when it was just bark and purr. The worst part was that the dog barked back and could not be settled. And it was pretty apparent that the girl handling him did not know how to distract him as she let him continue to hard stare and bark at my dog even when we were trying to leave. If you're going to let your employees have a dog at work, it needs to be bulletproof. It should be able to have any dog bark at it and show zero reaction. With so many stores in the area, this is the last time I will be returning to this one. read more

I meant to write the review long time ago but I was struggling with word to describe how awesome bark n purr is!!!! If you are a raw feeding advocate, this place is your jam!!! I am switching my corgi puppy to raw diet and I was having a little trouble transitioning him. I went in to look for a probiotic to help aid his digestion. One of the lady came by and asked if I needed help. She recommend this probiotic spray bottle, which happened to be on sale for 4 sth $ instead of 9$. She is really knowledgeable and know what she is talking about. I hung out around for little longer to look at some toys for the puppy, she came back with a can of pumpkin. I happened to look for those at HEB that day and couldnt find it. Not to mention Bark n Purr has tons of raw treats. I also bought 2 toys and suprised that they were having buy 1 get 1 free that day. I WILL ALWAYS GO TO BARK N PURR FROM THAT DAY!!! I was actually one of those people who skeptical and only shop at pet smart or petco. My friend recommend me Bark n Purr and I was afraid its just another overpriced pet store. The price is reasonable for me. They have good brand food and great customer services. Wow. I am annoyed. I know that there is no Santa and that there are lots of things that are too good to be true.... What happened today still boggles my mind. First off, AVOID the woman with the short hair, she is older, she wears glasses, and she is probably the owner. But I don't care. Another thing I noticed, the whole staff is DIFFERENT each time I have gone...probably because this woman wants only aggressive people working there....and I hope that negatively impacts sales for them because this is just ridiculous! All I did was ask if they had any samples of Senior Cat Food and she interrupted me telling me I did not need Senior Cat food unless my cat was fat and then proceeded to tell me she would "let me try" this EVO cat food and it all happened so fast (I had my dogs with me and was distracted and had no idea what she was doing which was scamming me) she charged me TEN DOLLARS for a "sample bag" of cat food and then we made the big mistake of buying the beagles 2 cookies and she charged us, gasp, EIGHT DOLLARS FOR TWO COOKIES when the sign said they were 2 dollars a cookie. I got all the way home (we live really far from this) when I realized she had done this, and I am pissed. I am not going back. SHE is TOO SALES AGGRESSIVE and totally took us. I knew our total sounded high at the time but some dogs came in and started barking so I had to leave and did not process what was going on.....or else I would have taken action right then and there.... It IS PARTIALLY MY Fault but she knew she could take advantage and that is not okay and she did not even tell me the price of the cat food! Ten dollars is close to what I pay for a WHOLE bag of cat food, not a "sample bag." She flat out misled and snowed the situation. read more

Always happy to support a local spot, especially when it comes to pet goods, I was eager to pay Bar 'N Purr a visit when we were in need of a humane bark collar. Quality local pet stores that outfit all the pet needs (not just sweaters and boutique items), I feel, are hard to come by. So, I was elated to be welcomed by rows and rows of every pet necessity - leashes, harnesses, shampoos, collars, toys, food, etc! As any locally owned shop would go, there was nothing in great quantity, but certainly in quality; however the most impressive takeaway from our visit was the service. Walking us through our purchase of the bark collar and really understanding where we were coming from made for a sure fire purchase. The sales person even seem to be knowledgeable about our specific breed of dog and why she barks so incessantly. Being able to relate on this matters is always more comforting, as well. Sure, the prices can reach the steep zone, but you really will find almost everything you need and your money is going to support a local business. read more

I've used Bark n Purr for many years. I would never use anyone else again; every time I try, I regret it. In a town of dog lovers, I can't recommend using Bark n Purr more. Just try them for a chew toy or treats the first time, and trust me, you will keep going back; it never hurts to try. The staff at Bark n Purr are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and will even help you to your car and carry food for you. If you can't make it to the store due to an odd work schedule, they deliver to a lot of Austin for free if you order $20 or more at a time, and the other zip codes cost only $5 for delivery; check their delivery map, but it is quite extensive. A lot of people think feeding their pet nicer foods is too pricey, but you can find great food at Bark n Purr for almost the same price as the cheaper foods, and your pet will love you. read more

I recommend avoiding this place. I have been going here regularly for a couple of years. They have nice stuff. It is a little more expensive, but I was willing to deal with that because I liked that it is a local business and liked the people that worked there. They owner was always a bit of a jerk, but I didn't really have to deal with him so I lived with it. Recently a couple of the employees left after issues with the owner. I have a Chow Chow that I rescued when she was 3 months old. She had been completely trained by Marcus at Triple Crown. She has the most gentle nature of any dog you would ever meet. However, "Bark 'N Purr" do not look at individual dogs but BAN CERTAIN BREEDS from their store and grooming area. I even offered to bring her up and let them interview her if they felt uncomfortable. They would not even take a moment to meet her just said NO, SHE IS NOT WELCOME! We have 2 Maltese dogs that my Chow Chow lives with and has for the past 3 years. She is a loving and wonderful dog that any family would be lucky to have. I am so thankful that Paws found her and took good care of her until we adopted her. I will never do business with "Bark "N Purr" and their antiquated attitudes towards animals. I was viciously attacked by a Cocker Spaniel who was just a mean dog. So sad to post a bad review, but when you deliver my cat DOG food and the packaging looks exactly the same (really not their fault, but it does) and said cat (an overly loved family member) starts to throw up every single day for several weeks and loses weight before you figure out what is wrong--- that 's a problem. No joke. To boot, when I went into the store to address this, I was asked if I bought it or if it was delivered after I had already explained that it was delivered. Ummm, yes it is YOUR fault, but thanks for trying blame the long term customer. Then I had to rebuy the correct food and a vitamin pack, to help replenish her with the correct nutrients she has been missing for 3 weeks. Shouldn't they have taken care of that since it was their mistake in the first place? I sure would have if I was in their position. Good news is she is finally back to her normal self. Bad news is that I have to find a new local business to support. :-/ To err is human and I forgave them for that, but it is totally disappointing that they handled the situation like they did. read more

Before I started writing this review I looked at the other reviews and found that I am not the only person that is frustrated with the customer service. I have been to Bark N' Purr about 8 times and today was my last. During my previous visits, I have never had good service. The people that work there are rude and I have never been asked if I needed any help. You can find most of their products at other stores around town and I went there today because it was closer. I came in with my dog and spent about 15 minutes looking at both collars and food. No one asked to help - instead they just stood behind the counter and did nothing. I have been very impressed with Bark 'N Purr each time I've gone in. When I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society, I received a certificate for a free bag of small cat food at Bark 'N Purr. The certificate is good for any brand of cat food, except for Science Diet. All that really good, high quality cat food? You can totally get a small bag for free! I selected a brand, Whole Earth Farms, that I thought my new kitty would enjoy and that I knew I could regularly afford. For months, I have been wanting to switch my two older cats to a better food. I've been feeding them IAMS Healthy Naturals since I've had them, but felt I could really find something better. Price was a definite concern - for $12, I could get the usual 5 pound bag of IAMS, and I was always afraid that making a switch would strain my minuscule budget. (Not that I don't want my cats to eat the best food - I definitely do - but I'm a social worker with a tiny budget, so I bought the best I could afford.) Bark 'N Purr has changed my entire perspective. Whole Earth Farms is only a couple of dollars more expensive than the IAMS I was previously buying. I was so excited. Here was a better cat food with better ingredients AND it will fit in my budget. I only wish I had figured this out sooner. They have several other brands that look awesome and that an employee told me all about, so maybe if I ever get a better job, the kitties can get another food upgrade. So far, though, they love the Whole Earth Farms and the switch was super easy. They've eaten the salmon and the chicken and liked both. Added bonus? The food is for cats at all life stages, so the kitten can eat it, too! (I still got a free bag of the kitten food, though, when I first got her.) The cherry on top? They have a rewards program for the food. I believe you get a bag of food free after your twelfth food purchase. This is amazing since the kitten eats like a horse and I am going through food way faster than expected. (The three cats went through the five pound bag in record time, so I bought the ten pound bag the second time around.) They have an amazing selection of wet food, too. My cats have only tried one or two of the Whole Earth Farms flavors, but they ate it up, so I take it they enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to letting them try all kinds of stuff, though. (I really like giving my cats wet food as a treat - helps add variety and they love the stuff.) I know I mostly talked about cat food, but they have a wide variety of dog food, too. My boyfriend is in charge of buying dog food, so I haven't yet purchased any dry food for our dog, but I did pick up some wet food and some bones. He loved the wet food and has already eaten the two bones I got him. Everything I've purchased has been reasonably priced and well within my small budget. The people who work here are friendly and have answered any questions I've had regarding food. They also share stories about their own pets and their experiences with different brands of food, which I think is great. I went to Bark 'N Purr because after searching all other pet stores I couldn't find a toy my Mom had given my dog, he had loved and subsequently destroyed. After watching him pitifully carry it around while whining, I knew I had to get him a new one. I walked into Bark 'N Purr expecting... Something else. The toy selection was great; I actually found the toy I that had been eluding me for so long! Unfortunately the customer service left something to be desired. The only time I got help was when I went up to the register and asked and the guy at the register seemed as though I was putting him out by asking for help... I'm sorry that you work there and I've never been before, I may need you to clarify something for me and as it's your job I don't think you should make me feel rude for asking. The toy ended up costing a significant amount more than my Mom said she had paid for it but to see my dog happy was worth it. I will unfortunately not be returning to this store, I don't like feeling like I'm interrupting someone's important business when I shop. read more

When I've gone here, the employees have always been rude. Even the owner is EXTREMELY rude and seems to take his anger out on people (not based on only my experience-see other reviews). On one occasion, I went here to buy toys for my dog, and somehow they tried to talk me into buying a raw food diet. I didn't even ask about diets. My veterinarian has since told me that the "Bones and Raw Food" diet, also known as "BARF," is not recommended to be healthy, so I chose not to use it, yet every time I visited Bark N Purr, I am bombarded and felt completely pressured to use this raw food. I will not be using this store again, and I do NOT recommend it to anyone else. There are other pet food stores in Austin that have MUCH better service (and prices!) Pet Supplies Plus is the one I usually go to, and the prices are better. read more

A Central Market for the fur-wearing and their indulgent owners I mainly shop here because it is local and within walking distance. They have many different brands of high-end food for cats and dogs. We have two cats, one of whom is elderly. We buy an expensive brand of dry food for him in the hope that he'll get a few more years with us. They have a fun selection of toys that my kids love almost as much as the cats do. The owners are frequently behind the counter, and you can tell how much they enjoy running their shop. The prices are not cheap, just like Central Market's prices aren't cheap. But just like CM, I come here for a specific reason (high end cat food) and buy the other essentials (litter) somewhere else. The only thing I'd change about it is the name. Somehow Lick N Purr just has a better and slightly naughty ring to it. read more
