For #thankfulthursday I decided to post a review of one of our favorite sushi places in town. It's been hard staying up with reviews due to the state of the world and I should have reviewed sooner but here we are. About 2 weeks ago, we decided to order take out - sushi was the menu. Everywhere we called (close to us in Spanish Springs) was closed. Just when we thought all hope was lost, we remembered Hiroba is now in Sparks so we called, placed an order and less than an hour later, were enjoying some much needed sushi. We couldn't believe how delicious and fresh every single piece was. Our faves (which we ordered of course) include tempura upside down shrimp, the Guapo, Godzilla, Lulu and more! Their service like always, impeccable. We can't wait to return for all you can eat so we can have some green tea ice cream. read more

As a 72 y/o long-term customer who began coming here when it first opened up, I'm very saddened to see a very unexpected decline at Hiroba. I used to brag about Hiroba to people all the time for it's fresh tasty food (REPEATEDLY so), pleasant employees and quaintness. I got to know the owners Sue and Yung (far more so, Sue) as well as Mauricio, the Chef. I (*we*) ALWAYS looked forward to going to Hiroba - without exception. As of Sept 6 2024 I/we can no longer do that. My wife and I hadn't been for about 6 months due to her operation, so this was going to be a late luncheon reward for her healing as well as (we 'thought',) the grand satisfaction of our palates - because Hiroba is the ONLY place we have gone to for years for sashimi, sushi, etc - we'd literally gone nowhere else. It was THAT good. OMG, what happened to this place?? The server, pleasant enough, didn't understand nor speak much English, making discussions *extremely* difficult. No wasabi was served (we later had to ask for it), the glass dipping dishes were now small kind of ugly plastic things, on our order: the staff made wrong items, forgot multiple items and worst of all, the dishes served were simply terrible... although the volcanoes were (not customary, but) "acceptable". Even the table soy sauces were odd tasting... especially the reduced salt one. I think maybe they were faux soys in real kikkoman bottles, because we use kikkoman at home and we're very accustom to their flavors. The tuna (all orders, every piece) was nearly inedible due to each bite being full of sinew - a fibrous interwoven tendon. Like chewing thin plastic yarn. Akami, it wasn't... very sure it was seshimo - from the lower back, which the cccc-cheapest quality one could buy as a restaurant. We always eat tuna and salmon at Hiroba and had NEVER had a fibrous bite of tuna - ever! Not one. The rice used in the long rolls was tasteless and dry, like it had sat out for days... literally no flavor - contrary to all our past experiences there. The spices/sauces/seeds were VERY ( *V* *E* *R* *Y* ) sparingly used and not one thing we ordered tasted like it "should" - In all our past experiences, the food quality and taste was !extremely tasty! and repeatable - THAT's why we always came back! That's why we never went anywhere else! Pfft. This time it was so bad we didn't order anything more and left hungry after (very quietly) speaking to a young lady about (in our opinion) the dramatic downfall of things, who then took our personal info and said she'd pass it on to Sue. I don't believe she did, or we would have heard from Sue, as Sue knows us by facial recognition. So quite unfortunately for US, we report the truth of the SAD new experience herein, as well as have made the decision to never go back. $60 for lunch (we had water drinks) which tasted that bad, is completely unacceptable. I haven't gone to Hiroba ever since the big move and change, but so glad we finally got the chance to! We were originally going to another sushi joint, but that place closed early and I had a craving for sushi. So I wanted to try something different. This place was just as good as I remember! Smaller place, but we got here for dinner fairly early (around 4:30) so we were seated right away. I don't even have a favorite roll from that evening, because everything we ordered was so tasty! They were also friendly with my one year old, who's just walking everywhere now. I asked for an order of gyoza (a la carte) for him, and they didn't even charge us (*cough Kei Sushi can take a lesson from them cough*). We'll definitely be returning! read more

I really miss the old spot. I saw the name, got excited to try it after being a big fan of the old one. I heard the partners split, one kept the name, the other kept the location. I tried the same location after the rename and it was decent, but not the same. Now it was time to try the one that did keep the name to see if it held up. Unfortunately I left disappointed. Service was good and quick, but the rolls were not the same and the flavor wasn't either. The rolls itself were tiny, which is good because you can try a lot of them, but it also means there is also very little filling in it. They are calling them maki rolls which is probably why they are so small, which is traditionally very minimal and small, but I didn't know that going in. For instance you may have a roll where the only thing inside is one tempura shrimp, that's it inside, with maybe a little crab on top. It made the rolls just seem so sad. I don't mind traditional maki rolls,but the whole roll menu was that. The nigiri was a better option to go with as its more fish and decent flavor, but not amazing. The hand rolls much like the maki rolls were really thin and barely had anything inside. My spicy scallop hand roll was cooked scallops too which I did not expect. It gets the job done in a pinch, but I don't think i'll be back. read more

10/10 every----single---time! There is no sushi spot in Reno/Sparks that comes close to Hiroba! Each roll is very different from the last. The fish is super fresh! Must try the ceviche roll, Casanova, odd future, and the yakiton appetizer is . We always get great service, too! The ambiance is nice. It's clean and open. read more

Probably not a good idea to drag a person that really didn't want sushi...across town...(it wasn't me)...I only ate a half sandwich for lunch so I could enjoy a new place. Arrived just before dinner time 5 p.m., and a few people were eating. The service was attentive and friendly. The music was good, The sushi brought out was probably the fastest we've ever had, along with the appetizers. At first they said they were al out of the hamachi Kama, so I asked for the salmon cheek. A few minutes later they were able to find the last one? Probably the tiniest in the ocean.. Rolls were decent, but could not even detect any sushi vinegar taste or smell, which is crucial to one who was wanting sushi.... I think next time we will just stay closer to our house. read more

We figure we should give this place a try. You walk in and right away THEY (All employees) greed you with a loud and funny "HELLO"!!!! Got our seat right away (at the bar). The food looks fresh and yummy. The server is ready for you right away as well. Environment is friendly, nice decor. The menu is pretty straight forward. Right away I notice the menu is pretty similar to everywhere else... Except for a few house special rolls such as the TUNDRA, SNOW MOUNTAIN, SUN FLOWER, CHALLENGE, SPARKS, etc. Worth to get right to it! By the way, if you like mussels like I do, you will love it because it is UNLIMITED appetizers. Only reason why I gave 4 stars was because the person making our food, he seemed very professional and fast, but he must been having a bad day or something. He had a little attitude. Even when I asked for a suggestion of substitute for spicy tuna on one of the rolls, he answer was "you choose"... So not much help there. Other than that, great experience. read more

Hiroba was and still is my favorite sushi joint since the first time I have tried it at its original location on skyline. I have yet to go back to the old location, but being in Sparks, makes it super convenient for a sushi fix for only a few minutes drive. The big thing for me at sushi joints are the mussels. I'm not going to to lie, i've been to a lot of sushi joints here in Reno and even some in California and i have to say Hiroba is top on my list for Mussels. One order gets you 4 of 2 little mussels with spicy mayo & siracha in a little big soup spoon and whatever kind of broth texture they have on the bottom. Seriously life changing when you eat it all together in one. Delicious. As far as the sushi goes, their also my favorite when it comes to Raw maki rolls and some of their nigiri as well. There is one roll on their menu though that some may want to try , but may also end up hating it because of how spicy it is. That roll I believe called "the challenge" so if you're a serious spicy lover , I highly recommend that roll because it was a little too spicy for my liking and i love spicy things. I honestly could not find any flaw at all with Hiroba since I've started going here. I always will recommend it for sushi suggestions to friends. If you're new in Sparks or even just looking for a sushi place thats not Ijji or you don't want to drive up to spanish springs for the joint, than I highly recommend Hiroba. read more

This is our second time ordering from here. Both times have been very fast and nearly perfectly accurate. This time they did make one of my vegan rolls non vegan. The miso soup is delicious. The spring rolls are so crispy, and vegan. The star of the spring rolls is the sweet and sour sauce they give you. It's yummy sweet and the perfect accent. The edamame arrived crispy and salty just right. The pot stickers have been great both times. This order we got Donald Duck, Crystal Shrimp, Spicy Scallop hand roll, snow mountain, rukki roll, krab mix bowl, tempura veggie rolls, salmon sake, yuppie, mussels, edamame, miso soup, and spring roll. My ex husband said he prefers Ijji's muscles. We all agree the spring rolls are divine. We got the Krab mix bowl simply because we didn't know what it was. Turns out it's just the Krab toppin in a bowl. My husband put it on top of his donald duck. The first time my vegan yuppie and vegan tempura were perfect. This time the vegan yuppie had cream cheese, and sprouts and weird things so I couldn't eat it. The edamame was delicious and the miso was wonderful both times. My son was confused that his crystal shrimp had Krab. The menu said it, but most places don't have crab in them. All together both orders were good and we would get them again. Delivery was flawless and fast. The food was wrapped and contained well. I wish they had more vegan offerings though. read more

After trying all of the sushi places in the area, my wife and I both agree that Hiroba Sushi in Sparks has the best fish quality by far! We both love sake (salmon) and the salmon from this sushi restaurant is phenomenal. In addition to enjoying their "All You Can Eat" dine-in option, we also have been taking advantage of their 20% off to-go orders, which they started to offer at the beginning of the pandemic. They do have some good rolls on their menu such as the boston, and tuna blossom, however they usually allow us to order a simple custom roll, which we greatly appreciate (in: crab mix, avocado, cucumber; top: salmon). It seems that a lot of sushi places in the reno area incorporate a lot of crystal shrimp into their rolls, and we are not fans, so it is nice to find a place that allows you to substitute items within the rolls. The image included in this review shows how generous they are with their sashimi orders. I highly recommend this place for both dine-in and take-out! read more

While Hiroba's staff did provide my sashimi and two Spider rolls, I had also requested in my Grub Hub order for the rolls to not have avocado in both rolls. My boyfriend is allergic to avocado, and he breaks out in hives. Thankfully I noticed the avocado before he ate one piece of the Spider roll. I placed an order last time for a Spider roll, and it did not contain any. I called the number, and kindly reminded the lady who recieved my call to please be more attentive to the customer's request, and I proceeded to explain the situation my boyfriend had with avocado. Though she did say she would let the team know, hopefully the cook, I was also hoping for at least a contrite apology, or an "I'm sorry; please let us make it up to you." Hey everybody the Reno Reviewer putting my two cents in on Hiroba sushi's let's get started. Off the bat came here for dinner the atmosphere was very nice the staff was super amazing super friendly whoever put the playlist had some great music throughout my whole meal. The food was amazing the mussels where cooked very well juicy not dry or to chewy, the rolls where the perfect size not to big like other restaurants you can definitely eat more then four rolls to yourself the hand rolls were amazing as well. The miso soup could have used a little more flavor tasted really bland. For dessert I ordered a green tea cheesecake first time ever having a cheesecake that flavor, it was so delicious a must try for sure when you come in, I really wanted a second slice next time though lol. The paradise rolls were 100/10. The service here was absolutely incredible. Especially the servers. They were super nice to my non English speaking family. I love the bilingual servers. I licked the plate top to bottom. No rice or rolls were found on the plate. Would totally recommend. Love how there was no limit. Felt like I could eat forever. By far the best sushi I've had in the area. Fresh, never smells fishy in the restaurant and the staff is alway friendly. We eat there so much we don't even need a menu, they know what we want when we are seated. The staff greats everyone when they come in the door and when they leave. I brought my 11-year-old daughter in here because I saw online that there was a discounted price for children with the all you can eat sushi. We came in here and looked at the menu and the menu also reflected that there was a lower price for children. After we ate, I got the bill and I was charged the adult price for both myself and daughter. Online it shows that Children up to 11 years old get the discounted price. The menu has been since updated and does not have an age limit specified for the children's price. When I confronted the server about it, she told me that it is for nine and under. How many 9-year-olds do you know that order all you can eat sushi? It's like she just made a number up looking at my child and guessed that she was older than nine. Honestly, not the best sushi either, but that was not my complaint. The customer service was lousy. They did not even offer to make things right. If you are going to charge a child full price for all you can eat sushi than please don't advertise on the menu that you have a discount for children. I never write bad reviews. But at this point I am simply appalled. I will not eat here again. read more

It's been a long time since I've been WOWed at a sushi restaurant. Reno tends to have a lot of good sushi places. Some better than others. Who'd think that a great place for "all you can eat" sushi would be in the desert of northern Nevada! One of the better places is Hiroba Sushi. When you first walk into this store front shop, it is non assuming. The environment is standard Reno sushi fare. You walk through the door and the employees greet you. My wife and I were asked if we would like a table or the sushi bar. We chose the sushi bar. Our first order was spicy tuna hand roll. As we were looking at the menu for other tasty items, the hand rolls were delivered to us. It wasn't even a minute! This must have been a fluke. But, we ate the hand rolls and surprise #2. The tuna was Spicy! The first restaurant in Reno to serve something spicy and it actually was spicy! YUM!!! We ordered another roll and another. Finally, the test, we ordered two salmon skin hand rolls. Normally, an item like this takes 5 to 10 minutes to prepare. In less than 5 minutes, it was on a serving dish and we were munching into it. The wrapper was crispy and fresh. Not gummy at all! The same can be said for the salmon skin too! I like this place. Finally, after we had our fill, we ordered something that caught my attention. The Challenge roll. What is this roll? I'm not sure, but it did have 2 peppers next to the name. Jalapenos, Habaneros and other things that bring a tear to my eyes. The roll was good and tasted like the peppers it was made with. It didn't have a lot of other flavors and honestly, I wasn't looking for those other flavors. I wanted spicy and that's what I got! The first piece was good but the second and third piece was, well this is the best way I and describe it. I could see tomorrow. Bottom Line ---------------- Oh yes, this sushi place is one that is on my list. Come hungry and prepare to be wowed. Great service We were not waiting for any sushi! Fresh fish! Hiroba's Crystal shrimp roll is unmatched! Simple, I know, but it's amazing! I also frequent the King Kong roll, and it never disappoints. I recently brought my kids for the first time, and they loved it. The ambiance was pleasant, and the food was great as always. Will definitely remain a customer. read more

4.5 stars This was our first trip to Hiroba Sushi. The place is small to medium sized with seating for around 30 people. The AYCE is $18.95 for lunch and includes appetizers and all sushi on the menu. Sadly items like tempura and teriyaki are not included. We tried a ton of items. For appetizers we had the calamari, cucumber salad, mussels, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, miso soup and crystal shrimp. All of the appetizers were very good. We tried many rolls which were good to average and a couple of spider hand rolls which were excellent. The rolls are small but have many pieces so keep this in mind if you want to try a lot of different items. For desert we tried the green tea cheesecake, fried bananas, mochi ice cream and green tea ice cream. Unfortunately our server did not point out that only 1 desert is included with each lunch so we got charged $2.00 each for every extra order. In addition although our server was prompt and friendly many of our rolls were mixed up. We got two OR three rolls we didn't order and had to ask for the rolls we did order. The service miscues are why I did not give Hiroba 5 stars. Even so Hiroba is a great option for AYCE sushi and I highly recommend checking them out. read more

We have been going to Hiroba for years. Today's experience was way less than pleasing. The women serving tables in there were just not coming over to our table except to drop off the food. We had to get up to get chop sticks then straws. Then at the end when we were ready to leave my husband had to get up and go take his payment to the lady. They only had one big party in there and that was when we first got there so I can't see that being a reason. Being regular customers I find this to be ridiculous. Be waiting a while before I go back in there. SMH read more

Tried this for the first time and ordered delivery on a Wednesday night. Ordered three rolls: spider roll, black tiger, and challenge roll. The whole order gets 3stars because it is what a sushi roll tastes like...So it's doing it's job lol. Flavor is decent, however it seemed like the rice and avocado weren't very fresh. The Spider Roll had so much rice! Two of the slices I had from it felt like a bite full of rice with a tiny piece of crab in the middle. I wouldn't have even really mentioned that if it didn't cost almost $12 for a roll of mostly rice. read more

My favorite sushi in town. Always great service, and even more important great fish. I usually stick to a lot of nigiri, lots of sake(salmon), and the cut on the fish is always clean. I find it really important that the fish look as beautiful as it tastes. It always tastes fresh and has a good rice to salmon ratio. I can't say enough good things about Hiroba and it's staff. Soooo good. A friend took me here as a treat and I had never been here so it was a fun surprise. This might be the freshest sushi in Reno. I grew up in SF so I was always having fresh caught fish and this place makes me not miss it! I even was their in time to try some of the seasonal uni and wow it was so buttery and smooth. We sat at the bar and came at lunch time and the service was speedy. Had an hour long lunch break and was in and out with time to spare and a nice full belly! Can't wait to come back. read more

Weekday AYCE lunch- $21.95/pp Been wanting to try this place because of the great rating, so we drove out of our way to lunch here. Easy parking, masks required, temperatures checked. We were seated immediately because the place was COMPLETELY empty of customers, which was fine because service was extra speedy. Started with spring rolls and mussels-- both delicious! Nigiri had a great fish to rice ratio but the rice was missing the rice vinegar-- so overall it didn't satisfy my sushi cravings :( Sushi rolls had awful filling to rice ratios (mostly rice), so I would recommend sticking with the nigiri. I tried the salmon skin hand roll, but the salmon skin was definitely over-fried (borderline burnt) and over-filled with rice, so also don't recommend :( Pretty dissatisfied with the main food, so I had lots of room for dessert-- MUST try the green tea cheesecake! That was probably my favorite thing from the entire meal! Chocolate mochi ice cream was good, too. TLDR; With SO many better sushi places in Reno, this place doesn't give us any reason to make the drive back to eat here-- missing the rice vinegar, rolls overfilled with rice, and overall lacking flavor. read more

Great sushi place in Sparks! I can understand why Yelp reviews has them rated as a 4.5 stars. As we walked in we were greeted, our temperature was taken and we were given the choice of sitting at a table or the bar. We decided the bar sounded like a good idea. Looking around I counted 9 workers in total for a smaller place like this. Plenty of workers making the sushi, all wearing gloves. We were excited to have a sushi chef right in front of us. My mother did a la carte while I did the AYCE. It did not take more than 5 minutes to get our nigiris and each rolls. Everything tasted amazing and fresh. I did have to ask for more ginger because they don't initially give you a lot but some don't like or eat it so that would be a waste. It took maybe 2 minutes to get me more. The AYCE comes with dessert but I decided to get another roll instead. It was tempting to still order dessert but I was so full after 3 rolls and 4 nigiris. I almost rolled out of the place but it was so worth every bite I took. My 84 year old mother doesn't eat sushi but I got her the California Roll and she liked it. I can't remember the rolls I got but they were ones with plenty of raw fish on them. Just writing this review makes me want to drive the over 40 miles to eat there again. read more

I'm new here for a couple days. Saw the reviews and here I am. Had the nigiri and a sushi roll w shrimp and ahi. The nigiri was good. Rice could have a little more sushi vinegar but it's alright. I had one pice of the sushi roll and I tripped to the bathroom twice and threw up. The cook came and apologized sans said he did something wrong. I just know that the shrimp was rancid bad. They deducted the item from the bill. I didn't finish the nigiri out of safety concerns. read more
