Tried something new this time. It was the Hunan shrimp lunch special with hot n sour soup... it was delicious and new, fresh tasting and hot. Of course I do get my stand by of Massaman chicken. If you like spice they will creamy up the heat... I think I've tried "3" and it was mighty toasty!! So now I just get mild so I can actually taste and enjoy it. Service is always friendly and I swear the lady remembers me each time I come in, or at least she makes it seem that way. Place has nice seating area and is open and cozy. This was the second time I tried this restaurant since moving here from the Bay Area. Which of course automatically makes me a Chinese food snob! It's been about 4 years since the last time, I tried the food here and since I was hosting about 10 people at my home, I wanted to serve something simple and cost effective. My goto for this is Chinese food. I ordered chicken chow mein and stir fried mixed vegetables. It came in two trays and enough from probably closer to 15 people. So portions were good but the total bill was between $120-$130 about what I've come to expect here in Reno. Let's just say, I've traveled to several countries in Asia and lived most of my life in Northern CA eating quite a bit of Chinese food. This doesn't make my an expert but it would be fair to say, I am quite familiar with what is considered mainstream traditional Chinese cooking. But let's get to the food, with the caveat that I realize that everyone's preferences can vary widely when it comes to food. So my opinion is based on what one would find in Hong Kong and San Francisco. The chicken chow mein had all the correct ingredients, long noodles that were slightly thicker than say spaghetti, had the correct amount of softness without being mushy. Chicken was presented in slices and appeared to be white meat, there was some white onions thrown in there for some texture and flavor. Normally when I order chow mein, it isn't served with a brown "gravy". Not that this dish was swimming in it, but think of spaghetti with tomato sauce. Replace the red with medium dark brown and you get the picture. Now my guests who are Reno locals, thought it was great and flavorful. I would agree with the flavor part but it was much too saucy for my tastes. Would I try Chin Chin again for noodles? I'm not sure but the owner did state, they can make dishes any way I like, so perhaps I'll order off menu next time. The stir fried mixed vegetables is where I was most disappointed. Let's start with the ingredients. All were sliced in 2-3 inch pieces, which included button mushrooms, zuchinni, bamboo shoots, brocolli, carrots, and onions. This dish could have passed for a savory vegetable stew. There was a lot of gravy, so much so, that it colored all the vegetables brown, except for the carrots. The sauce had a slight "twang" to it, almost vinegar or worchester-like. Not my thing, I could not taste the individual flavors of the vegetables because of how heavy the sauce was. The brocolli was over cooked where the flowerette parts were pale. I prefer my vegetables to be just cooked, almost snappy. I would not order this dish again. No comments on the restaurant itself as both times I tried it, was for take out. So bottomline, would I try Chin Chin again? Yes but I will be very specific on how I would like my order prepared. Maybe for their lunch special. read more

Drowning the protein in sauce must be a Reno thing because this is the 3rd restaurant in town that serves General Tso this was. What is most disappointing is the two lonely broccoli florets and the dry rice served on the side. Crab Rangoon was good and my daughter liked her kids chicken chow mein. Tried this place for the first time. Me and my husband were just hungry and in the area and we stumbled upon this hidden GEM! The hibachi dinner specials are extremely affordable and the flavor was amazing. We had our baby with us as well and they made us feel more than welcome. Great service, great food and great prices! I've never had a sugary sweet mongolian beef before and i hope i never have it again.It was spicy which is good but totally missed the mark for me, good thing we ordered for take out, I literally put it all in a pan and added soy sauce and chili garlic sauce to kill the overly sweet flavor of the dish. Also the beef was chewy, big pieces of tough meat that just needed to be cooked a bit more and reduced down to make them tender and pleasant to chew on. My wife ordered orange chicken and it was good, much better than my mongolian beef. Veggie spring rolls were excellent but i didn't get a side of spicy mustard- my fault , the mustard packets are terrible and nothing like the real deal. Hot and sour soup was pretty good. I'm a fortune palace guy, they are closed on mondays so we tried the only local option we could find and it didn't compare in my opinion. That's a first for me to cook and season take out chinese to improve taste and tenderness. I order Mongolian Beef every time i eat chinese food, so take it from a fan of the dish, sugary sweet mongolian beef is not very good, it's supposed to be savory and spicy- Soy Sauce, rice wine vinegar, fresh garlic, chili garlic sauce, little oyster sauce and a pinch of ginger and that will make a lovely savory dish. Love to try new places and anticipate loving each new experience. My first visit today trying Chin Chin restaurant. Lovely location but I was disappointed when inside. The decor seems very dated and cumbersome. I could not imagine coming here for dinner. We tried their lunch special. We had the hot and sour soup and also tried the egg drop. The soup was warm only, but served in a bowl larger than the norm and very delicious, both were enjoyed. A dish of fried won ton strips was presented with sides of mustard and sweet and sour sauce for dipping. Didn't eat it or need it. My son chose the chicken chow mein and I had the chicken with vegetables. The chow mein was normal but not exceptional. My chicken dish was not delicious. Normally this dish comes with a clear, light sauce and this was what I was expecting. The sauce it came in was dark and I found lumps of gelatinous sauce in my meal, not heated through to melt properly. I must say the decor was a real struggle for me. I found it so unappealing it detracted from everything. In all fairness, when we were there, there continued to be more people coming in and clearly many were repeat customers. I have been here twice with my family and love their lunch special menu. The prices are great and the staff is always so friendly. I got the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice, egg drop soup and a spring roll. I am quite picky with fried rice so I wasn't very fond of their fried rice but everything else was very good! I recently ordered a large meal from Chin Chin for my mother-in-law's birthday dinner. We live in Sparks, so it's close-ish to home and seemed to offer a variety of main dishes since MIL doesn't like spicy food, she's more of a sweet & sour, chow mein type of gal. Anyhoo, I ordered based on their online menu, which shows BBQ spare ribs, but apparently that's just a stock pic, those are not actually on their menu. My initial regret began when I walked into a very nearly empty dining room at 6:30pm on a Tues. My next wave of regret came when I checked out and was charged approx. $13 more (before tax & tip) than their posted prices online. Everything was packed, stapled & sealed so I wouldn't have the full depth of regret until I got home and unpacked everything. We ordered sweet & sour pork, chicken fried rice, pork chow mein, app sampler for 2, walnut shrimp, beef skewers and mongolian beef. Their online menu showed these items totaling $83. I was rang up at $96. The beef skewers were overcooked and tough. The fried shrimp were so overcooked and tough, almost burned. The 8 pieces of walnut shrimp were heavily breaded and in 1/2" of some thick mayo type sauce full of whitish pineapple pieces? and the walnuts had a rancid taste. The chicken fried rice was pale & oily. The chow mein was dark, flavorless in a pool of oil & had only a few green onion pieces, but lacked other veggies. The sweet & sour pork were microscopic pieces of overcooked pork heavily breaded, like a pork donut, and had the same pale whitish pineapple but came with a giant vat of red sauce, easily 4x the amount of sauce needed. The only dish we liked was the Mongolian beef and it's the 1 thing my MIL won't eat. Even teens didn't like the chow mein & fried rice it was so bland & greasy! And my teens usually clean up Chinese food! We discarded SO MUCH food for such a high bill. My MIL didn't spare her criticism of how disappointing this meal was, and I agree. The staff inside was pleasant, but thats the extent of the 2 stars. read more

Tried chin chin for the first time. Coming in, I was pretty surprised with the restaurant. It was way nicer than I was expecting. Beautiful, intimate, and cozy. The vibe was great! Service was spectacular! Quick and friendly. Our table was bussed throughout our meal, waters refilled, food came out fast and hot! Prices were amazing. Very cheap for a ton of food! Food was okay... not my favorite. I ordered the lunch special with hot and sour soup, egg roll, Rangoon, Fried rice and chicken chow mein as the entree. Soup was okay, egg roll and Rangoon were tasty. Fried rice was bland, chow mein was sooooo salty and too much sauce. I ordered another lunch special to go, and only drove10 minutes home. By the time I got home the egg roll and Rangoon were soggy. I ordered the general chicken and the texture was weird. We've ordered takeout primarily from this business the last 5 times we've ordered and are always met by the same woman who is just an amazing human being. We decided to sit down as we noticed they have hibachi, so we said... let's try it out and this is what our experience looked like. Hibachi: 4/5 Having ichiban and iiji 2 as the "hibachi" place... I'd say this place is only missing the show... flavor wise, wow..... left speechless with the flavor profile, the yum yum sauce, definitely a go to sauce! I would say for the price. This meal is worth more than what you pay for. 2 things I would make notice of this would be, request your steak cooked to your preference when ordering, and just ignore the fact you don't get the "hibachi" show... but enjoy the food because it's delicious! Chicken lettuce wraps: 6/5 I love lettuce wraps. They are absolutely delicious, you'll definitely need another plate for the juices that drip but wow... just impressed with these little apps because boy o boy... they were a great start to your meal! Service and ambiance 8/5 I don't think I've ever been to a better family owned restaurant. Our servers remember us from when we call, to when we pick up our order. Attention to detail is an understatement because between the 2 servers. They manage their location amazingly! Depending on your taste, you might like it--but for us, it was mostly a letdown. We ordered the sesame chicken, which was clearly just pre-fried, frozen chicken chunks tossed in a syrupy sauce. I also tried a Thai curry dish, and while the portion was generous, the flavor was off. The chicken was oddly chewy, and the carrots tasted barely cooked. The whole meal felt like it missed the mark in both quality and execution. To be fair, the interior of the restaurant is clean and well-decorated, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. But good service can only go so far when the food itself is disappointing. We ended up leaving most of it untouched. In short: Chin Chin might be fine if you're craving Americanized Chinese food and aren't too picky--but if you're looking for fresh, flavorful dishes, you might want to look somewhere else. read more

My pad Thai was average but too much tomato taste for me. Noodles were good but covered with finely chopped peanuts. Could have used more bean sprouts and green onions. Shrimp were medium sized and okay. Portions were large enough for leftovers. As usual, I was the only one to order Thai. Everyone else enjoyed their dishes. Would I return? I genuinely can't say enough great things about Chin Chin! I have a lot of food allergies and gave up on eating Chinese food a while ago. However, I was craving mushu and decided to give them a try. Little did I know they are SO incredibly understanding with allergies! I came back in later to see if their sesame chicken was egg free, and while it's not, they actually made a special batch without the egg just for me! They really care about their customers and it has given me a whole new safe place to eat. I know food allergies aren't easy to work around, but they always do everything they can to prepare whatever I want on the menu. Even with the changes everything is absolutely delicious! read more

The staff is very nice. They always remember me and ask how my Dad is doing. Which is very nice. We have only been in a couple times before. The food is very tasty. The fried rice is the best. My family loves that they have combination plates. It comes with a choice of fried rice or white rice, sweet and sour soup or egg drop soup, and appetizers depending on your choice of combination. They make a decent sweet and sour pork. Sometimes it lacks vegetables. My family loves vegetables so we love dishes that incorporate a lot of vegetables. My son's favorite soup is egg drop. I will say it is really good here. We usually get the Family Combination B. We enjoy General Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, Chicken Chow Mein, Sweet and Sour Pork, Crab Rangoon, and egg rolls. I love their egg rolls. They are crispy on the outside with delectable vegetables on the inside. The crab rangoon is really good too. We always get mild dishes. The general chicken is a little bland for my taste. But, it is in a crispy breading with nice and tender chicken inside. We order online or over the phone and they go pick it up. It is always ready when we arrive. Employees both on the phone and at the restaurant are kind, cordial, and knowledgeable.
