Hinoki Is a great AYCE sushi option for both lunch and dinner, and I've never been disappointed! They have a good selection of sake, and the all-you-can-eat menu is extensive. The roles are interesting and they have some fun sauces, like the basil sauce on the Hinoki role. The nigiri is fresh and very generous pieces of fish, and everything is always beautifully presented. Service is good and usually quick, and the price is on par with other AYCE joints in town. read more

It was Just Okay. Came in for Lunch (around 2:45pm), thought they were closed because there was no one there, but there's a sign on the door saying they're open. Seated immediately and order taken. Two other people in there with me, it was quiet and very clean. I was super worried at first since every single roll seems to list "teriyaki sauce" as one of the included ingredients. None of my handrolls came with the teriyaki sauce thank god. I ordered 4 handrolls, 12 pieces of nigiri, miso soup, and a strawberry ice cream. AYCE Lunch for an adult was $27.99. Definitely got my moneys worth for how much I ate and comparing it to alacarte pricing. But I probably would eat somewhere else, just personal preference. Hinoki Sushi was hands down my favorite sushi spot (pre-COVID). It felt like the sushi chefs took their time with each roll or nigiri to ensure that the fish was high quality and that the accompanying ingredients held together in the right way. I am so pleased to see that nothing has changed! I'm just starting to venture back into in-person dining. I visited Hinoki on a Saturday afternoon and they were pretty busy. We did all you can eat (lunch is from 11:00-4:00 and dinner is 4:00 PM and later). The prices were reasonable and the quality of each item we ordered was top-notch. The nigiri, in particular, was fantastic. The fish was high quality and cut to the perfect width. The sauces drizzled over were enough to enhance the sushi without overpowering it. Hinoki will remain my top sushi recommendation for anyone looking for good sushi in Reno. The restaurant itself is styled much like a café, the walls could use some fresh paint, and overall it is nothing fancy... but the food is great! read more

We love spicy so our top pics are the cream cheese filled and jalapeño topped Playboy roll, plus the new Flamin' Hot roll... it's sweet, savory, topped with pickled onions, jalapeño, and you guessed it... rolled in Hot Cheetos! Absolutely terrible service. The time it took to get our food was ridiculously slow, and our server was completely inattentive. We sat with empty sodas the entire time, dirty plates piling up, and no one bothered to check on us. Our waiter finally came back after 25 minutes, which is unacceptable--especially for an all-you-can-eat place. At that point, it wasn't "all you can eat" because they took so long to bring out food or take our next order. The whole experience was frustrating and disappointing. Recently moved to Reno and have been on a quest to find the area's best All You Can Eat (AYCE) Sushi. This was my 7th place I have visited and I purposely saved it for last as a couple locals I met and reviews I read seemed to indicate this was a local favorite. It comes in 2nd out of the 7 I've tried so far. One thing I discovered on my quest is all these restaurants have very very similar menus, especially for the Nigiri. And all have very similar fish quality as they are probably sourcing most of their fish from the same sources and most of it, except the Atlantic Salmon comes frozen. So in my humble opinion, differences in fish quality are mainly due to the day of the week you visit in relation to how long ago the fish you are eating was thawed. I was there when the place was at most 10% full so can't judge service. Judging from the capacity though, I think it would be wise to avoid this place during weekend peak dinner hours if you can. The good: - No other AYCE sushi place of the other 6 had a larger selection of Nigiri Sushi. Many others don't have scallop nigiri (one of my favorites), Hinoki does. They also have Escolar White Tuna (different from Albacore and Hamachi) which others don't have. (My photo of the row of nigiri, the Escolar and Mackerel are in the middle.) - Fish quality on some fish seemed above average like the Mackerel was moist, oily and not dry and overbrined. The scallop was excellent but an extremely thin cut even for scallop as shown in my photo. - Rice seasoning is on point, not too much sugar and/or vinegar which some other places do. - Plenty of space for large family's and groups to dine both at tables and at probably the longest sushi bar of any of the places I tried. This place is definitely set up to handle volume. - Gobs of parking The NOT so good: - The mussels were WAY overcooked and chewy (but the sauce was good.) - Immediately you will notice the lighting over the sushi bar is terrible. It feels like the white fluorescent lighting in the exam room at a dentist/doctor's office. CHANGE YOUR BULBS! The lights over the tables are warmer, not sure why they went with shop light color lights over the sushi bar. - The decor and ambiance are, well, there really isn't much decor or ambiance. It's like eating in a small warehouse where all they did was paint the walls green. LOL. - The small size of the nigiri is very typical for AYCE but their cuts tended to look large but actually pretty thin so fish to rice ratio is about average for AYCE. - The roll menu is average in size and therefore might seem a bit limited for the Roll Fanatics. About 1/4th of the rolls have cream cheese. And about 3/4th of the rolls have teriyaki sauce. (Gee you can dump sugary-salty teriyaki sauce on a roll filled with hot dog meat and people will love it.) I find too much or too many different sauces sort of mask the flavors of what's inside the roll. (Roll enthusiasts may differ.) I usually order hand rolls as typically the ratio of non-rice ingredients to rice is higher than the maki long rolls. I tried three rolls here in hand roll form and two of the three were excellent, BUT, I asked for modifications. The "Odd Future" WITHOUT Teriyaki Sauce and the Cherry Blossom without the Ebi, fake Crab, and Teriyaki sauce. (There are so many ingredients in the Cherry Blossom if you had them all you are only getting minute amounts of each otherwise you can't fit them all in!) - The Cajun Tuna was not what I expected. Typically it is tuna seared with a cajun rub on the outside. There was no cajun rub so I think the cajun is the sauce they put on it which didn't taste very cajun to me or maybe the rub was so little I just couldn't see it. - Salmon Nigiri and Salmon Egg Gunkan quality was average at best with little marble in the salmon (think I had bad luck as other review photos show much better looking salmon.) This review is from the perspective of a Sushi Fanatic. Overall I'd definitely recommend Hinoki if the SE Reno area is convenient for you, especially if you have a group and it's not a special occasion where you desire a unique upscale ambiance. read more

Another great sushi AYCE meal at Hinoki! Great selection! The AYCE lunch prices are valid till 4:00 p.m., so it's a great deal to eat an early dinner or l really late lunch and save about $14 per couple if you go before the dinner prices start. Truly delicious as usual! read more

We had a large party for a birthday, and we felt welcome and accommodated. They even provided plates for our cake we brought in (thank you!). The only issue was it seemed there were only two waitresses for the entire restaurant, and at times only 1. It was a full house and every table needed help, so this led to delays. Friendly service and great food, but maybe amped up staffing to allow for better coverage would be helpful. I look forward to going again when they aren't so busy to see how it pans out. Handrolls were on point! One of the only sushi spots I've found in Reno that offers agedashi tofu, too, my FAVORITE (included in the AYCE)!! Bonus point for that. read more

Great AYCE sushi option!! If you want to have a superb experience, sit by the bar so you can order directly. For appetizers we ordered the agedashi tofu, edamame, and gyoza. Everything was delicious; no complaints at all! My boyfriend and I ordered so many different nigiris here, and we were blown away. The fish was super fresh and perfectly fatty. Their fish-to-rice ratio was so on point; I actually think the fish pieces were much larger than our rice pieces. We also ordered a couple rolls (R&B, Spider, and Ceviche). The ceviche roll is quite unique and actually worked out really well as a roll. Personally I'd order more nigiris though because they give thicker chunks of fish on the nigiris than the rolls. I'd definitely come back again the next time I'm in Reno! My favorite AYCE place here. read more

When hinoki is on, it's amazing. When it's off, it's way off. My issue with hinoki is the consistency is never there. It tends to be better in person (as most restaurants), but even then it's a risk when you show up. Many times the nigiri is so ammonia tasting. The service is good though. I don't recommend ordering through a delivery service. I've ordered a few times for pick up and delivery both, and the order directions are never followed through, for instance, no sriracha. Latest order was mediocre at best. Burnt crystal shrimp, mediocre fish slices, Mickey mouse nigiri being a dollar more for a 1/4 tsp of crab, if that, and the smallest half slice of Avocado. Overall meal didn't taste as fresh as it could have been. It's in rotation, but I don't think it's consistent enough in my experience to be a "go to". read more

Fast, fresh sushi on Friday night. Rode our bikes to the neighborhood sushi spot and happily had no wait for the bar on a Friday night despite steady traffic. We ordered two appetizers and three rolls, Cherry Blossom, Golden Gate, and Yo-yo. The food was out fast and the rolls were fresh and tasty. We ordered green tea ice cream for dessert. Two odd things I like is their clean menu. It's easy to read and not overwhelming. Also, the decor is minimal with space to get out of your chair whether at the bar or table. read more

Decent neighborhood sushi joint. Prices are a little inflated for the quality, service, and ambiance at $38/person for all-you-can-eat or three table spoons of ice cream for $3. We sat at the counter and our sushi chef took good care of us. The other services and weight staff were a little slow to provide additional support for drinks, clearing dishes, or follow up with customers' needs. Still, all staff were polite and helpful when they did engage us. Went here on a random Monday around lunch time. There was plenty of room. We decided to sit at the bar area to watch the sushi chef prep our food. We ordered several rolls: Spider, Tundra, Dragon and Cherry Blossom. Our favorite roll was the cherry blossom roll. It didn't feel heavy like the dragon roll since it only has crab mix and avocado in the center. The CB roll has plenty of diced scallops on top. We most ordered Nigiri for our lunch. My kids loved the Cajun salmon, Escolar and the beef tataki. Overall the nigiris were good. My kids loved their tempura banana with ice cream. It was a real treat for them since it's not often we can get banana tempura. We will definitely come back here if we visit Reno in the future. read more

Good sushi with a pretty good variety I came for dinner on a Saturday around 6PM with a group of 7. The wait was about 45 minutes which was understandable since we were a pretty large group. We called ahead of time to ask if they took reservations, but they don't for weekends. We did the AYCE option which was $31.99 per person. They had a good amount of appetizers, nigiri, and rolls to choose from. The appetizers came out very quickly along with the first round of nigiri and rolls that we ordered. The fish was flavorful and I particularly enjoyed the Donald Duck nigiri (salmon with imitation crab and avocado), unagi, scallop, and upside down shrimp. The unagi had a smokey-like flavor to it that I did really enjoy. We also got some rolls which came in small batches and very small cuts. I actually liked that since it gave us more room to try other varieties without getting too full, so that was great! After our first round of food, however, the service suddenly got very very slow. I'm not sure if they got particularly more busy? but we had to wait at least 30 minutes for the next round of food even though our order sheet was picked up a long while ago. So even though some of our group still had room for more food, we didn't want to wait so long since things just started taking forever. For dessert, they have offer different ice cream flavors as well as a banana tempura with ice cream option, which was a nice way to finish up the meal. Overall a really great sushi place. read more

We came here because the reviews seemed higher than the other AYCE sushi spots in town. I was surprised that it wasn't more busy. The service was nice and everything came out quickly. My boyfriend did the AYCE and I did Ala carte because I can't eat sushi. The teriyaki chicken had good flavor, but it was cut in small pieces, and some parts were dry. The tempura veggies were very good and the batter was light. It didn't taste oily at all which I love. The gyoza too were very good. The only thing is I didn't like the dipping sauce for the tempura or for the gyoza. It tasted like just straight soy sauce and vinegar with no other flavor. I didn't like my seaweed salad. It was much thinner than other ones that I have had. My boyfriend wasn't a big fan of the sushi. He said it didn't seem fresh. The quail eggs were good, but the rest he didn't care for. Our waitress checked with us quickly and we ordered our appetizers to get underway. The mussels and gyozu were good, very simple and flavorful. We ordered a slew of nigiri. The sake or salmon is by far my favorite and I have to say, the cuts were beautiful! There was a good balance of rice to fish and the rice tasted as though it had been seasoned? Might be wrong here, but it was subtle, good. I have a tendency to overdo it with rolls, so I'm grateful they offer hand rolls. It's a great way to sample without over ordering and paying for what you didn't eat. The waitress did mention that they will do a half roll if it's going to be your last roll. Good to know. I was surprised the nigiri took so long to come out, but when it did, it was definitely worth the wait! The AYCE is $25 for lunch and $32 for dinner. I'm sure I'll be back again! My only request would be for the restaurant to find a furikake seasoning that doesn't have MSG. read more

I have been going to various places around Reno for sushi and have been disappointed by the cut lately. Decided to go to Hinoki to get my sushi fix. Hinoki was so awesome, not only were the sushi chefs super sweet, but the fish and the cut was excellent. The mussels I ordered were tender and not over cooked. I recommend getting the escolar nigiri. Very tasty. In fact, all the nigiri from the tuna, hamachi, salmon, and scallop were so tasty and you can discern the différent taste of the fish. They have a ton of variety and they were able to make some changes to the rolls I wanted to make them gluten free. They also had GF soy sauce. I would say the only negative is that at one point they seemed to have gotten a little backed up and our rolls took a while. I can confidently say that this restaurant produces volumes of adequate and innovative sushi. It seems that they are able to quickly feed a lot of people and quickly. The rolls are cut into bite size pieces, so it's very shareable. We ended up ordering so much that they just made it the all you can eat price. What I would recommend is getting some soups and tempura to begin with. The first rolls you should try are the Ceviche Roll and the Captain Crunch Roll. Don't be afraid to try them all! read more

This is one sweet hotspot for sushi!. Typically with all you can eat sushi the preparation can feel rushed and the focus is on quantity over quality. That is not the case and gnocchi. This felt like a maid to order pay as you go sushi restaurant with the convenience of all you can eat sushi. I especially loved the salmon which was outstandingly fresh. The consistency of the cuts were excellent and these tasted mostly like the belly cuts with minimal connective tissue. Th unagi was perfectly cooked and the eel sauce was not too sweet. Wow! When I say go here I am not understating the need to visit. Everything is unique and fresh and the service is excellent. They were also very kind to my kid who absolutely loves sushi. One thing I love the most is that they use more than just fish in their rolls for protein. The wait for our food wasn't long at all and we always had refilled beverages. -The speciality rolls is why i would go back here. They all have such unique flavors to their specialty rolls and the nice thing is that most of the rolls can be turned into a hand roll. Favorites include the Captain Crunch, Mermaid, Bonsai ( not pictured) Cons: - Nigiri needs improvement. My husband and I usually get more nigiri than speciality rolls but what was missing in the nigiri for us was that the rice didn't taste like Japanese rice. Usually there is a Japanese rice seasoning and we did get that flavor. Which made the experience of the nigiri not as appetizing or appealing to us. Other than that everything else was great!
