Always on the lookout for a great sushi restaurant, we tried this place and felt like we found our Reno sushi home. The rice - perfect! The server - so knowledgeable, such a good upseller (I appreciate that when it's done well; she got us hooked up with a delicious sake), and very attentive. We went in late afternoon and watched the place full quickly for dinner as our meal progressed. No reservations needed, but we liked the off hour experience. AWARENESS: A few months ago, I was told my go-to sushi spot (Sushi Pier #1) either closed or, would be closing in the future. Not being from Reno, I turned to a few of my Reno Yelp Elite buddies for recommendations for a new all you can eat (AYCE) sushi place better than Sushi Pier. Three of the three I asked suggested I try Hinoki Sushi. NARRATIVE: The weekend of June 20, the wife, my daughter, her dog and I decided to get out of the house for a few days and we somehow ended up in Reno. On June 21st, my daughter and I decided to have lunch here at Hinoki. We arrived shortly after 1PM and even though the restaurant seemed crowded, we were seated right away. We began our AYCE experience by first ordering mussels from the appetizer menu. At the same time, we also submitted our orders for sushi and nigiri. The mussels arrived first and were very good. I don't know which sushi or hand rolls my daughter ordered but, she ordered a total of three of them. On my first round order of nigiri, I ordered Uzura (quail egg & tobiko), Ikura (salmon roe), Ika (squid), Saba (mackerel) and Cajun Tuna. Even though I though my nigiri pieces were on the small side, they were all very tasty. On round #2 of my nigiri order, I reordered Uzura but I asked for 2 orders. I also ordered their seared Tuna, Maguro (tuna) and another round of mussels from the appetizer menu. Again, all good but small portions. SCENE: Hinoki Sushi is located in good sized strip mall on Longley Lane, close to the intersection of Double R. Bldv. in Reno. The interior is fairly large and without COVID-19 and full seating, I'm sure would likely hold a large amount of people. EVIDENCE: I took several pictures of my Nigiri orders. RECOMMENDATION(S): Hinoki Sushi is good but, my daughter and I talked while dining and both agreed Sushi Pier was a bit better. Offering more variety of foods and much large portions. read more

Owner needs to do a check in. This has been my go to sushi spot the last few years, wife loves the 300 roll and can't get enough. Tonight however, the food, atmosphere, and service wasn't even close to what we've come to expect from Hinoki. I paid 120$ + tip for my family of three. We were there an hour and a half, no drink refills, and they lost our order sheet. They delivered two 300 rolls and came back to the table twice to ask us if we wanted to order anything else. We filled out the order sheet a second time; and when the rolls arrived, the rice appeared to be soggy and overcooked and the rolls and nigiri had no structural integrity. Just very disappointing... I'll give it another shot because this is the first time we've been let down by Hinoki, but if we have a similar experience we won't be coming back. read more

I have been here a few times. The sushi is good and while it's not my favorite sushi place in town it is good. The rolls are different they have a lot of various sauces they use and some really unique rolls different than most places in town. You can get all you can eat and it is comparable to many restaurants in price. They have great service and since it's sort of off the beaten path it never get overly packed. If you're looking to try a new sushi restaurant I would suggest this place mainly because of the uniqueness of the menu and you can have sushi rolls you can't get anywhere else. read more

This review is for their vegetarian rolls only! This is my new favorite go to spot for vegetarian sushi! They have 6 vegetarian sushi options and all of them are a hit. Start with their miso soup which is the best miso soup I have ever had and try their tempura veggies (little less carrots and more variety of veggies would be nice but overall it was so yummy). All their vegetarian rolls taste different yet delicious and unique in their own flavors. My favorites were: Godzilla (deep fried goodness) and Green Giant (mango and apple goodness) They have AYCE dinner for $30 but as a vegetarian, we usually just go for Al la carte and we're fully satisfied around $45 total for two people. Sometimes I forget about this sushi place on Longley. Its tucked in the corner and its hard not to turn the wheel towards starbucks. I went here a couple days ago and I have to say...absolutely delicious! I constantly go between sushi places to find what I like best and after coming here again, they swooped in and stole my heart once again as my favorite sushi bar in Reno. I'm eager to try their omakase at hinoki o too, but as far as AYCE goes, I swear my loyalty here...at least for now...they still got competition with any new pop up sushi bars in the future. 2 stars for the food only* Coming from the Bay Area, maybe I have higher expectation. Half the rolls on the menu are tiny. And most of what we ordered was disappointing. So check with all the posted pictures before you order. Spider roll, $8.99 so small, not worth the price and it wasn't good. I barely see or tasted the soft shell crab. Hinoki roll $9.99 is tiny as well and the combo of basil in it didn't work for me. Money tree $6.99, it's ok, probably the best of these 3 small rolls. Larger rolls for the similar price we ordered were the dragon and volcano roll. They are ok, the fish on top were definitely skimpy on both rolls. Sashimi $15.99 totally a no no! We got tuna, salmon and hamachi. All were tasteless. Worst one was the tuna, I left half of it cuz I couldn't do it to myself. Too cheap to be good, should have know better. Best dish we had was the hamachi carpaccio $13.99. Probably because it's covered with so much flavor of sauces, seaweed and onion. Service is ok, they came to our table couple times offering someone else's food to us. Good thing we didn't do AYCE cuz I would've been upset for paying $32 or over $128 for a family of 4 for poorly made sushi. Over all, we won't come back and will review Yelp reviews more carefully. This is a poorly run restaurant. Quality of sushi: good Service: friendly but unprofessional Logistical management of seating/wait time estimates: extremely poor Wait times for food: the worst I've ever seen Our party of 8 was at Hinoki sushi for over 3 hours. When we called in 10 minutes away, the staff said there were tables open, when we arrived it was a 45 minute wait. Each order we put in took half an hour to come out. The majority of the time, there was no food on the table. They also repeatedly missed items on our orders, and proceeded to ask us what was missing rather than referring back to the order slips. The few times the waitress refilled our waters, she grabbed the glass from the rim, which is a health concern. After 2 hours at the table and waiting over 30 mins for our last order, we checked in with our server and found out that they had delivered the order to another table. I'm not sure how long we would've sat there for had we not proactively asked. Most AYCE sushi places have a time limit of 90 minutes. I'd much prefer a time limit with reasonable turnaround times for food rather than the madness that happened here. Please hire more sushi chefs. After 2+ hours & a 40 min wait, half our group left not full. read more

What's that saying, good things come to those who wait.. well not the case here at hinoki. Good things come so quick it takes less than a blink of an eye. Service at hinoki is well above what most sushi places are offering in Reno in terms of wait times, good fish and genuinely awesome chefs/servers. Hinoki is always packed, but the turnover of tables are manageable. I've come here consistently at different times of the day, wait is never more than 30 minutes at the most. Seating at the bar is absolutely the way to go if you have a small party. Rolls are fresh, hot and special orders can be requested directly to chef. My favorite rolls here are the ceviche, Godzilla, spider hand roll with tobiko, and all selection of nigiris. Cajun tuna and Cajun salmon are executed well. Habanero sauce, sliced jalapeños on top oh and fresh fish. My mouth was on FIRE! What an interesting visit. A sushi place called Hinoki staffed mainly (solely?) by folks with a Central American origin. We were visiting Reno and decided AYCE sushi was a good idea. Got there a bit after 1pm and the restaurant was full. Fortunately there was a family leaving so our wait was only a couple of minutes. They hand you a couple of menus and some slips to order from. Tried several appetizers, a bunch of nigiri, seven long rolls and two handrolls. All of the apps were very good especially the taboyaki (octopus balls). The nigiri was good, not super heavy on rice which is often an issue with AYCE sushi. Only downside is I cannot say that I could taste a lot of distinction in fish flavors. They had surf clam on the nigiri menu which is not included at most AYCE places so that was a positive. The two handrolls were good. Salmon skin is one of my favorites! The long rolls were different. I enjoyed the ceviche and hinoki which were distinctive in flavor, particularly the hinoki which had a sauce of basil and balsamic. Not overpowering and it took a second for my brain to register and identify the flavors. Refreshing! The only somewhat disappointing roll was the rainbow roll. As I mentioned above, the flavor of the fish was not real strong so without any sauce, etc., the rainbow roll was just a little bit plain. Decent service. They seemed a little disorganized on the orders and which table ordered what. Our unagi nigiri never arrived, but by the end, we were so full, it didn't really matter. Overall a solid four stars and worth a visit if you are in Reno and craving sushi. read more
